Anyone who thinks the Raiders are a lock to select LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell No. 1 overall in next month’s draft should read what Oakland coach Lane Kiffin said about him today. While praising him overall, Kiffin referred to Russell as “somebody that’s like a video game.” Reading between the lines, it sounds like Kiffin isn’t convinced that Russell’s superior athleticism will necessarily make him a great quarterback.“He can … throw the ball 70 yards,” Kiffin said. “That’s real exciting and everything, but how many times does that happen a year? About two in 16 games? While that aspect is fun, you’ve got to dig a lot further than that. Because he can make all those throws you can make on a video game … that doesn’t happen that much [in a game]. I know that’s a scout’s dream to have a guy like that. But you have to go back further than that, watch all the game film.”Contrast that statement with what Kiffin said about Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson, another potential No. 1 pick.“He seems perfect for the most part,” Kiffin said. “You research him and you can’t find a bad thing.”Kiffin said he was impressed when Johnson ran an impromptu 40-yard dash at the scouting combine, finishing in 4.35 seconds while wearing borrowed shoes.“He saw guys running and said, ‘You know what, I’m going to beat everybody right now,’” Kiffin said. “‘Because I don’t care what my agent says, I don’t care what they told me I’m supposed to do.’ There’s a great competitor. … That’s what excites me so much.”
