Raiders Paving The Way For A Rookie QB? (1 Viewer)

Just read on NFL.com that Tuiososopo has signed with the Jets LINK

Plus they also just signed Josh Booty, who has been playing baseball the past few years. Consequently, the Raiders currently only have two QBs on their roster, Walter and Booty. Could this be a sign that Russell or Quinn will be their selection in the upcoming draft?

Ithink that is already expected unless they get Rodgers from the Packers.

I agree, but there are alot of people who think they're going to draft Calvin Johnson

Under the right conditions, Walter's not a bad young QB prospect. I just think that they're full-up on WR's though and that they'll need to draft a franchise QB.

Tui's departure was a given regardless of what else they do.

As far as Josh is concerned, my guess is Al Davis told someone to make a booty call for him, and they misunderstood. Next thing you know, they have another QB.

Yeah, I'd say both Tui and Booty are enough of non-entities that this move tells us nothing.

I think it tells us that Davis wants to stick w/ Walter. I was hoping that Oakland would sign Johnson after Minn released him, and hope that they got the offense on track with him before Walter took over, somewhat like Brunell did for the 'Skins so Campbell could get on track. We'll see come the end of April, and 2nd guessing Al Davis is a crapshoot anyways. Me, I'm in the Calvin wagon... a little pass blocking and something resembling a running game could do wonders for an immobile, yet great armed QB. Walter reminds me a lot of Bledsoe, who did have a few good years in the league.

The following is a list of the QBs that Oakland has drafted in the first three rounds in the past 30 years.

Andrew Walter

Marques Tuiasosopo

Billy Joe Hobert

Todd Marinovich

Marc Wilson

Jeb Blount

Oakland's most successful QBs in recent history have been reclamation projects (Rich Gannon, Jim Plunkett). They not had a QB prospect pan out through the draft since they drafted Ken Stabler in 1968. I would not assume that they are locked into taking a QB at 1.01. They passed on Matt Leinhart to take Michael Huff; I think there is a lot of sentiment in the media that that was a mistake, but I don't think Oakland regrets it one bit. The huge failure of Todd Marinovich still lingers within the organization, and I think last year they only reaffirmed their resolve to wait on QB talent or pursue it through FA.

Did anyone see Lane Kiffin's comments on Jamarcus Russell? They didn't make it sound like he's convinced. From today's (Minneapolis) Star Tribune:

Anyone who thinks the Raiders are a lock to select LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell No. 1 overall in next month’s draft should read what Oakland coach Lane Kiffin said about him today. While praising him overall, Kiffin referred to Russell as “somebody that’s like a video game.” Reading between the lines, it sounds like Kiffin isn’t convinced that Russell’s superior athleticism will necessarily make him a great quarterback.“He can … throw the ball 70 yards,” Kiffin said. “That’s real exciting and everything, but how many times does that happen a year? About two in 16 games? While that aspect is fun, you’ve got to dig a lot further than that. Because he can make all those throws you can make on a video game … that doesn’t happen that much [in a game]. I know that’s a scout’s dream to have a guy like that. But you have to go back further than that, watch all the game film.”Contrast that statement with what Kiffin said about Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson, another potential No. 1 pick.“He seems perfect for the most part,” Kiffin said. “You research him and you can’t find a bad thing.”Kiffin said he was impressed when Johnson ran an impromptu 40-yard dash at the scouting combine, finishing in 4.35 seconds while wearing borrowed shoes.“He saw guys running and said, ‘You know what, I’m going to beat everybody right now,’” Kiffin said. “‘Because I don’t care what my agent says, I don’t care what they told me I’m supposed to do.’ There’s a great competitor. … That’s what excites me so much.”
If Moss stays on that roster, I'm still not sure how you take Calvin Johnson. Moss/Johnson/Porter/Curry? Now THAT sounds like a video game.

Adam Schefter said on Total Access last night that he was talking to Al Davis, and Davis compared JaMarcus to Elway. If that's true, that's the biggest hint I've heard yet.

All this disinformation is hurting my brain. :penalty: Personally, I find that comparison intellectually insulting. Elway is my favorite player of all time. I don't see many similarities other than that both throw the ball hard.

Schefter was more specific: He said Al was referring to his arm strength, and the way he moved in the pocket.

I don't know if it's a valid comparison. You can punch holes in any comparison if you want. Depending on if you like JaMarcus or not, I've seen him compared to Leftwich, Leaf, Culpepper, and Roethlisberger.

The fact that Al made it is the interesting part. Al moved heavan and earth in '83 to try and get Elway from the Colts.

I agree about all the misinformation.

I honestly have no idea who Oakland, Detroit, or Cleveland wants.

Prediction: Dolphins sign Carr and release Culpepper. Culpepper signs with Oakland. Culpepper to Moss once again?

Wouldn't that one be strange?

This is how I understood it as well. I am now fully prepared for JR to become a Raider. Either via the first pick or what I hope will be a pick CJ and trade with whomever want's to trade JR and a draft pick for CJ. Either way, after what I heard last night, JR is as good as a Raider in my book.

They should trade down and get some help for that awful o-line. Same with the Lions, bottom 2 o-lines = bottom 2 records. Coincidence?

Yes, he is.Walter is crap personified.
You based this on last season? Aaron Brooks was a seasoned veteran and that offense made him look like he never should have had a starting job anywhere. His career may have been marked with inconsistency and he always had questionable decision making in the clutch, but that line last year made him look 10 times worse than he ever has in the past. They kept sending Walter back in deep drops only to have him running for his life on practically every throw. How is a guy supposed to keep perfect mechanics when he's ducking D-linemen every play. You'd have thought they could have added a few hot routes or dump offs into the Offense to keep the QB's from getting killed but all season long you saw routes that never had time to develop and QB's that never had time to throw. Walter may very well end up a bust but there is absolutely no way you could tell that based upon last season.
