From St. Louis Post Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz....

NY Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams and Spagnuolo are currently negotiating the terms of his contract and indications are that we can expect the announcement of the hiring later today.

At this time no news conference is planned for Saturday at Rams Park.

Spagnuolo, 49, was the Giants defensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008 and came up with the game plan that resulted in five sacks of Tom Brady and a shocking upset of the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Before that, Spagnuolo learned his trade under acclaimed Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, working as an Eagles defensive assistant from 1999-2006.

Rams GM Billy and Spagnuolo have been friends for many years and that relationship obviously created a trust factor that helped Spagnuolo feel comfortable about taking the Rams job.

Spagnuolo wowed the Rams' brass with a presentation in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Congrats to Devaney and Rosenbloom.

Interesting in light of the stories about Garret coming back for a second meeting, supposedly to finalize a contract.

I think it's a good hire for my Rams.

Let's rebuild this thing Spags.

Start by getting rid of Bulger or atleast drafting his eventual replacement this year.

I can't stand watching him hold onto the ball to long and curling up into a little ball so he doesn't get hurt.

(wussy) = Bulger

This sounds like what they were saying 5 years ago about Warner. Maybe the Rams should, I don't know, first pretend to care about their o-line and pass protection before dumping on their QB's.

As a Lions fan, I had to admit that I was kinda hoping for Spags as our head coach, but am fairly happy with Schwartz. We REALLY needed a defensive-minded coach for once.

But anywho... Spags should do fairly well in Ramville. He has his work cut out for him. They have a lot of holes to fill, too (like Detroit, though not as many).

Or go to a WCO where he can get rid of it fast.

i'm glad the rams went with a defensive guy. they needed to quit trying to rediscover the "greatest show on turf". the rams defense and special teams coverage often seemed to be afterthoughts under mike martz. why would any good defensive player want to come to st. louis? to ruin his reputation? to end his career? i know martz has been gone for a few years, but his ghost lingers.

it seems like a lot of fans around here think you have to score 40 pts and pass for 400 yds a game or else there is something terribly wrong, but if this team becomes competitive and starts winning then it doesn't really matter how they win.

and for the love of god, don't hire mike martz as the OC!!!!

As a Rams fan I like the move!! Defensive minded coach going to a Defensive-less team!! Garrett just didnt make sense!?? The Rams offense is fine! They didnt need another Scott Linehan at the helm!?? Add a solid Lineman and Bulger will hit his targets in the secondary and SJax will do his thing!! Preferred Rex Ryan? But understandable they couldnt wait on him to see him sign with the Jets(likely to happen).

Good move Rams!! Hats off!!

Gotta figure Rex to the JEts is a lock now.....

Good hire for the Rams - like Spags more than Garrett.

Damn!

Now I hate the Eagles even more (as if I could) for if the Giants won, maybe the Rams would have gone with somebody else instead of grabbing Spags.

Anyway, great aggressive defensive coach and I wish him the best and hope that his skills can translate well into a quality head coach.

As for my Giants, I hope they get someone who will continue Spags' style of defense and his scheme that seemed to fit the Giants well. Unfortunately, the Giants don't have a great history of following up a good D coordinator with another quality hire.

ESPN news is saying it is down to 2: Spagnuolo and Garrett
It's Spagnuolo....
New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

Spagnuolo is signed, sealed and delivered, having accepted a four-year deal worth just under $12 million, according to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch.

Spagnuolo came out of the Philadelphia experience with a variety of multiple defensive formations and blitz packages that he put to great use with the Giants.

Rams GM Billy Devaney and Spagnuolo have been friends for many years, and that relationship obviously created a trust factor that helped Spagnuolo feel comfortable about taking the Rams job.

Spagnuolo served as a player personnel intern for the Washington Redskins in 1983, during Devaney's time in D.C. as an aide to GM Bobby Beathard. And Spagnuolo was a scout in San Diego in 1993, working for Devaney, then the Chargers' assistant GM.

Spagnuolo wowed the Rams' brass with a presentation in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Spagnuolo has earned a reputation for being a terrific motivator, and was able to maintain the quality of the NY Giants defense this season despite the retirement of DE Michael Strahan and a season-ending knee injury to DE Osi Umenyiora.

Spagnuolo was born in Whitinsville, Mass. and attended Grafton High School, where he is a member of the school’s athletic Hall of Fame. Spagnuolo earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Springfield College and a master's degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts. He is a member of the Springfield College Hall of Fame.

He's married; his wife's name is Maria and she's a native of Philadelphia.

Damn, I hope he doesn't get it so GARRETT can get out of Dallas.

IF Garrett doesn't go, we're stuck with another year of Wade, the Redhead, T.O. and all the drama!

Are you asking for an opinion or giving one?

Great hire by the Rams.
He's a great defensive coordinator, no doubt, but as we've seen in many cases good coordinators don't always make good head coaches. There is much more to being a head coach them defensive and offensive schemes. It's one of those jobs that you just never know who will succeed and who will fail until they give it a go.I wish him the best but there is a laundry list of excellent coordinators who failed as head coach despite their impressive resumes .

 Warner looked severely shell shocked and the end in STL and in NY. any QB who takes that many hits is gonna get shaky after a while.

I'm thrilled for the Rams, and admittedly surprised they came away with a top candidate. I'm really liking Duvaney.

Knowing this:Do you think he has what it takes?
