Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Still training hard here. Actually hitting new peaks while everyone else is packing it in for the season. Signed up for an indoor TT series and placed 1st of 36 in week one. That just motivated to ride this last weekend in 28 degree temps. Spent 3 days the prior week climb moutains in 40 degree temps while sick and on anti-biotics. Recently maxed out at 25.1 mph on my 5 min speed intervals which was a new pr.

Anyway, I drank a few too many beers and bought this bike tonite in the 06 flavor. http://www.cervelo.com/bikes.aspx?bike=P3C2008 Got a steal. Guess I'm committed to working on having an engine to justified this.
Did you at least convince them to throw in a basket for the front?
If you're referring to one of those aero drink containers that sits between the bars so you don't have to sit up to drink...then yes.
Does it have a daisy on the front of it?

I think that's an option on the SL Tour model.

:goodposting: Oh no you didn't.

NICE RIDE! Now you'll definitely have to start doing some Tris or duathlons... you know you wanna.

You're going to need a behind the seat bottle holder, I think... I know a guy who might have a couple extra lying around...

Thought I'd interject here and see how everyone's running workouts are coming along.

Personally, I did a relatively quick 6-miler late yesterday afternoon at 7:40 pace, and then turned around early this morning and did four miles on heavy legs at a VERY relaxed 8:28 pace.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to play basketball, but I'll be doing ten miles on Thanksgiving morning with a couple of girls from my running club. Nothing like burning 1,500+ calories prior to chowing down on turkey and pumpkin pie! Besides, I like the idea of spending my pre-dawn hours getting good and sweaty with a couple of fit females, neither of whom is my wife! :lmao:

I'll probably play basketball again on Friday and then run an easy 4-miler, and then I'll be resting on Saturday before tackling the Noodleini 15K on Sunday morning. Furley is supposed to be there, too, for the companion 5K race, but time will tell if he follows through or not....

Just got back from running on the treadmill and lifting weights at the gym and noticed a big blood blister on my pinky toe. It doesn't hurt, but it looks like amputation is imminent.

Monday I ran 5.8 miles at a very easy 10:25, it was my last run before tomorrow's 10 mile race. I hope to average a VERY hard 8:28 pace during the race :P . Seriously, my only goal for tomorrow is to beat 90 minutes for the ten miles, and if I don't make it I will not be extremely upset. I think I am going to run a shorter run on Saturday with a long run on Sunday, but I will probably change my mind by then. I am now less than a month from the half I have spent the last 6 months training for. I have to be honest, it has been a great time. I am really glad that I started running. In case I don't post again soon, everyone have a fantastic Thanksgiving. And if you are worried about putting on weight, I advise running 10 miles Thursday morning to cancel out some of those food calories.

I finished my last marathon with a toe trifecta - one blackened toenail, one blood blister under the next toenail, and one regular blister next to that. :warrior: All three toes have thankfully survived, though the black nail continues to look up and taunt me.BnB, welcome back ...was wondering how you've been doing! Nice wheels!!!Darrin and other Turkey Trotters - do well! Wish I could be out running too. And too wet of a forecast to take my bike with me to Michigan for the couple day break ...settle for a swim workout and gobs of push-ups.Happy Thanksgiving!

 SWEET looking ride  . I'm also currently in the market and will most likely be purchasing this bike, though I am bidding on this one but am pretty certain I'll be outbid.

I just realized our Turkey Trot is 5 mi. and not 5K. That seems to take it from "fun" to "work." As the Bible says, "Screw that!"

4m- 33mins+

First run since the marathon- the legs felt great, the rest of me not so much (forgot I've been sick for a week or so).

Don't tell him that he can't. I believe it's made by his alter-ego Van Dessel

Can't beat bikes direct...very happy with my Motobecane I bought last year. That said, good luck with the auction. I pc3 went for a number much closer to my budget than the retail price. I didn't expect to win it.

Race Results for Thanksgiving 10 milerhttp://www.altavistasports.com/results/2007results/thanksgiving10miler112207.html

I finished in 1:25:08 officially, and kicked 1:30 right in the buttocks.

Mile Splits according to my watch

1 8:17.8

2 8:17.4

3 8:35

4 8:33.8

5 8:37.2

6 8:41.4

7 8:27

8 8:33.1

9 8:25.6

10 8:38.9

AVG 8:31

I started out to quickly, but it did not really hurt me. Once I slowed my pace in mile 3 I ran fairly easy and was actually chatting with another runner. It was a very nice run and I am looking forward to the half next month.

I finished 21st of 26 in age group  , but 116 of 257 overall. For some reason there were a lot of fast runners in my age group. Steve did beat me by 30 some seconds, but he was ninth in his age group. Those slow old farts.

Also the times are all gun times, Steve and I started about 10 or so seconds from the official start line. So unofficially I beat 1:25.

I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. I know I am going to chow down fairly soon. Congrats to those that ran races, Righetti, those were pretty good times. Way to go.

ETA: I will post a link to pics later today after I download them.

Brrrrrrrrr. And I thought it was too cold this morning when I went to get the newspaper and it was in the low 40's. We (wife and I) decided to postpone our runs until tomorrow, and broke out the rum. We both decided that especially on Thanksgiving, rum beats run :)

Yes I do. I still must think about it but I am running better when I lean from the ankles, and I am doing that more every race. I think the whole CHI stuff is :bs: , but the leaning exercises have really helped.

Steve's wife stayed home from the race today and fixed a splendiferous Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the trimmings. I had three plates full of food before it was over. I did have lite Cool Whip on my two big pieces of apple pie so that should have canceled all the calories from the meal. We burned about 1600 calories during the run and consumed about 3000+ with dinner, so it all evened out. What a great day.

Great job on the race, and achieving your goals Darrin! :thumbup:Snow and Ice running is GREAT tri-running training- short stride is your friend. That said, it was in the low 60s today in NYC. [Nelson] HAH-ha [/Nelson]

Hey, Furley. I ran outside early this morning, too, and the only time I felt uncomfortably cold was when we were running into the wind. Even then, the only thing that really got cold was my face. I wore my Under Armour tights and long-sleeved shirt with a pair of wind pants and a windbreaker over the top. Under Armour = :lmao: . Get some.It was icy where we ran, too, and I agree that the short, choppy steps are VERY uncomfortable. Add the fact that I was forced to run at a pace that was much slower than usual for me, and it made for a pretty miserable runnning experience.

Hey, Furley. Get those pants yet? If not, I saw these today at ****'s and thought they looked pretty nice.Myself, just braved the 18-degree wind chill to run five strong miles at 7:29 pace. As is usually the case, it really sucked when I was running into the wind, but it almost felt like I was gliding when I had the wind at my back. I start I'm starting to get acclimated to this cold stuff again, which is good, because this is what I'll battling during my Boston training this winter.

Oh yeah, also picked up these gloves today at ****'s and used them during my run. Pretty sweet.

4mi in 36:24 yesterday morning. A nice brisk (well, for Phoenix) morning, I smoked the first two miles in 15:40 (7:55 and 7:45 paces). Nice to know I have that under the hood, I just have to put together 26.2 of 'em. Last two miles were ptts'd by my calf acting up. Same thing I had after running San Diego in June, where it feels like it wants to cramp. There's a nice little knot in there that I just can't get rid of. It's been back for about a week, apparently coinciding with my ramping up my mileage in prep for PF Chang's. I think my shin splints on that same leg may be flaring up as well. I'll have to break out my foam roller and I have an ART appt in a couple weeks, so hopefully I can get through this marathon injury-free (unlike last year).

8-10 in the hills on tap for Saturday.

:sadbanana: popped in to The Running Store in Appleton and picked up some Sporthill (think that's the name) pants for $60. also got a windbreaker jacket that my wife bought for me.

I did 11 miles this morning in 1:44:40, a 9:30 pace. It felt like it was a nice easy run, and I even had negative splits.

I hope everyone had successful training runs and races today.

Posting for the first time in a bit to keep myself honest. Slacked off a bit and only did 1 or 2 runs a week early in the month, but got back on it this week with 3-3.5 milers on Monday and Wednesday and a nice 7.5 miler yesterday. Nothing like the consumption of ridiculous amounts of calories to get you motivated again (as I sit here eating my pancakes with pumpkin butter, in preparation for making my own family's turkey n' trimmings meal tomorrow after coming home from the in-laws on Thursday with no leftovers). Damn, I better go out and run again right now......

Keep up the postings on cold weather clothing. While it's obviously relative considering some of y'all are dealing with WI and MI winters while I'm wondering how I'm going to deal with running in 40 degree days here in the Bay Area, I do need to be edumacated as I don't have any running gear other than some shorts and a couple dri-fit shirts. I can't believe even Furley owns more gear than me.

Great to hear that you are still at it Duck!! Between now and the Holidays, we all probably need to pick up the calorie burning pace! I refuse to refuse food, which is why I workout!

I agree about the  It's a lot of reading (majority = fluff) for just a few really good principles. Good posture, leaning, picking feet up, and relaxed muscles are what I got from it.

FYI:I purchased my bike!!!!!

Last night was utterly hilarious. We (whole family) went over to our neighbors house to watch the Aggies beat up on t.u. We started with beers and at halftime, we decided it would be a good time to start drinking martini's (bad decision #1). I'm sure this decision made perfect sense at the time, but I don't recall much after it was made. We decided to stay and watch the Aggies beat up on OSU in hoops as well (so I'm told). Approximately 5 martinis later the game was over, and Mrs. Liquors took our girls home to put them to bed.

Bad decision #2 was that my neighbor and I thought it would be a great time to go for a bike ride. I got changed, put my helmet on (thank goodness!), and took my bike down. I wobbled out into our driveway, and attempted (key word) to get on it. I stepped on one pedal, and tried to throw my leg over the bike. Only I wasn't clipped in, and took a really nice digger. I started laughing out loud, got up, straddled my bike, and miraculously got on it. Neighbor wasn't out yet, so I started riding circles in our culdesac. Another neighbor drove him, and I rode to his driveway to talk about the ###-whoopings our Ag's gave. The neighbor I was supposed to go for a bike ride with then came out, and my other neighbor and I watched him attempt not once or twice, but three times to get on his bike (all three times taking major diggers). We went over to him and decided it was best to not ride at that time (though we were all three laughing uncontrollably!).

I then went home, and turned my computer on, and found out that I won the Ebay auction  . Went to bed, and woke up at (wide awake) at 4:00 am and felt the need to look at my bike again. I then realized that my hip, elbow and knee were in some pretty good pain (from the digger). I took some aspirin and had some water, and tried to go back to head. Possibly still drunk, but euphoric about my bike.

My neighbor called at about noon, and while he's incredibly sore, no permanent damage (so he's got that going for him...). I'm tired, and sore, but not very hung over (thanks probably to hydrating really well all night!). I'm now just patiently waiting for my new ride!.

Great races, guys!

Very relaxed holidays for me. Got in 350 reps (push-ups/etc) Thursday morning; one hour swim Friday afternoon.

My BIL's sister had Chi Running with her, and I flew through it in about 45 minutes, picking up the primary items that liquors mentioned above (but also - the need to breath properly [to which I add - exhale, exhale]): use the core; relax; lean; lift the knees.

Her husband is a physical therapist (though seems kind of quackish). He was talking to me about my achilles, and talking about referred pain. :lmao: He felt that it could be tension in my calf muscles that creates the pain sensation in the achilles. He worked out a few knots in the calf, and explained how I could do this myself. So I'll try it. The achilles is feeling almost normal ...maybe a few more weeks and I can give it a try?

He also recommended ginger (the herb, not the babe).

Ok, I have to ask a stupid question. When an athlete wears compression shorts or tights, is it customary to wear something underneath such as a jock strap or something else?

ETA:

I should have kept looking.

Compression shorts should not be considered a substitute for an athletic supporter by male athletes. For some sports where an athletic supporter is required, it may be acceptable to wear compression shorts over an athletic supporter as is sometimes done by male basketball players.

He also recommended ginger (the herb, not the babe). :lmao:
Did he say what the ginger was good for? I know a place near home that has good dried ginger.
Meh, it sounded like psycho-babble from him ...but researching a bit, it seems to be known for its healing qualities; helping with circulation; other stuff. Those first two specifics are why he brought it up.Oh, and nice wheels, liquor!!

 popped in to The Running Store in Appleton and picked up some Sporthill (think that's the name) pants for $60. also got a windbreaker jacket that my wife bought for me.
Assuming you're talking about the Fox Valley Running Co., you made a good choice. I know the owner, Steve, and he's a good guy. And you made another good choice with the SportHill pants; they make very good cold-weather clothing. If you're still up and around, are you still planning on running tomorrow morning? Forecast says 30 degrees with partly cloudy skies at the start, but 15 MPH winds will make it feel more like 19 degrees. At least we'll be going out into the wind, so we'll have it at our backs for the 2nd half of the race.

Well, Furley ptts'd on me this morning, but I still made it to De Pere for the 4th annual Noodleini 15K. Conditions were tough with the wind chill around 20 degrees and a gusty SE wind at 15-20 mph.

I've only run one other 15K in my life, clocking 1:12:08 back in February 2006. My goal for today was to finish around 1:05 (7:00 pace), but considering the wind and the cold weather, I figured I'd be happy with anything under 1:10. I started pretty strong, clocking 6:49 for the 1st mile. The next two miles were straight into the wind, so I slowed to 7:08 and then 7:26. Miles 4-7 zig-zagged back and forth, so there was a headwind part of the time and a tailwind part of the time. I ran 7:12, 7:33, 7:34, and 7:21. Finally, we turned back north; I sped up to 7:14 for mile #8, 7:09 for mile #9, and 1:55 for the last three tenths.

Unofficial time (per my Garmin) was 1:07:28, an average pace of 7:15 and a PR by 4+ minutes. Mentally, it was a very tough race, as the gusty winds over the first seven miles took a lot out of me. All things considered, I'm pretty happy that I managed to dig deep and average 7:05 pace over the last 2.3 miles. My only regret was not ducking in behind a group of high school runners around mile 2. They were running a little slower than I wanted to run, so I pulled out and passed them. In retrospect, they were doing a great job of breaking the wind, and I should've just fallen in behind them, sacrificed a little bit of time, and save a lot of energy for later in the race.

All in all, a nice race, and definitely a good confidence builder.

ETA official results already posted (wow). Official time was 1:07:31, good for 49th place overall and 6th place in the M30-34 age group.

did a nice easy 4.67 miler around Prospect Park today.. Great feeling being back outside for every run this weekend... Gotta hope the weather stays good enough for a few more weeks of outdoor running

You guys are friggin' nuts with your cold weather running. It's 42 degrees in Austin and I'll be getting my five miles in on the treadmill at the gym this afternoon.

First off to all the Turkey Trotters, great race reports and even better results. Darrin, that is a crazy fast time for a ten-miler, gruecd-that must have been a stout field to best your time like that in your age group as that was a great time, conditions or otherwise. Now, you have some work to do to post race hottie photos in that kind of weather.

If there is a version of Catholic confession for runners, I think I need to know where to go. We had an awesome time down in Mazatlan, but I think I did just about everything wrong for my body that I could. I did get two runs in, but both were with rather painful hangovers. I did one 5 mile run on Monday where I did the first mile on the beach and then doubled back on to the street which was an adventure, to say the least with traffic, people and crappy so-called side walks. I also got in a 3+ mile beach run on Wednesday. I think the beach was my downfall, physically. I hurt my left foot from both running and just running around tossing the football and Frisbee and playing volleyball. Plus, I didn’t wear shoes for most of the trip. Can anyone give me an idea what a stress fracture feels like or if you can pull a muscle or tendon in your foot? It is on the bottom of the outside of the muscular part of the foot (which would lead me to believe it is not a stress fracture). It also “clicks” or pops when I walk. It felt better in shoes but is still sore.

Back to punishing my body, there was also a ton of really good food, way to much drinking of just about everything and a cigar or two. Back to reality. I am going to rest for one more day to see how my foot feels before running.

So I ran the 10 miler at an 8:30 pace in Thursday race, then I ran 11 miles on Saturday at a 9:30 pace, and finally 8.2 at a 9:19 pace. Steve told me both yesterday and today that if I had run all out during the race I should not have been able to run as I did on Saturday and Sunday. I don't know, but I will admit that the race was fairly easy for me up to the last half mile, I was chatting with other runners during the first half and encouraging the runners behind me after the turnaround. Should I have run harder at first?

Anyway, I want to find out, so I entered a 10k race next Saturday that I had not planned originally planned to run in. I am going to try and run my hardest for the complete race and see what happens. Unless everything goes wrong on Saturday I am fairly certain that I will set a PB as my only other 10k was run at a 9:06 pace. I am going to try and run it under an 8 minute pace.

I'm with Steve on this and personally could not have run the mies you did at any pace. As you menatlly set up for the 10K, instead of picking a goal of 8 minute miles like you did (or around a sub 50 minute race), why not pick a best worst for each mile and check in? I cannot recall if you are using something like a Garmin, but how often are you checking your pace? I had not been able to break the 50 minute 10K mark. Going in to the last 10K race I ran, I went it wanting my work pace to be 7:50 miles with a best pace of around 7:00. Being me I checked the Garmin quite a bit and was very encouraged to see I was hovering around 7:30 just about every time I looked and husteld more when it got above here. End result was a 47 minute race, much better than expected. Based on what I am reading, your goal of 8 minute miles is too reserved and you should go harder. You may be a little more sore than usual, but this should be a good test of some of those other muscles you might need for the 1/2 marathon coming up.

Unrelated topic of sorts, I woke up with a misrable hangover earlier this week while on vacation. While drinking a very large bottle of water, it popped in to my head that I had packed some Shot Bloks in case I got up the urge to go for a long run. I figured they tend to make the body feel better by helping it assimilate fluids and get oxygen to where it is needed. So, I tried a couple with my water. Now, I can't verify if it was the Bloks or not, but I felt much better, very quick.

...bringing new meaning to the term "Shot" Blok. Darrin, yeah, you should try pushing it. I use my breathing as a guide - unless it's feeling almost strained a bit, I don't feel like I'm pushing it. For a 10 miler or less, I don't think you should be "able" to talk comfortably with those around you.

Thanks for the kind words. It was definitely a tough group of runners. :yes:The first-place finisher in my age group (M30-34) broke an hour and finished at 59:29 (6:23 pace). Second place ran 1:00:44, and third place ran 1:05:19, so I really wasn't even close to finishing in the top three.
