I wish I had done that with my early months of running. It was so fun to see gains early on. I just can't imagine being able to get in a pool and swim laps of freestyle. I have to alternate freestyle, backstroke and throw in some breast stroke to give my legs something different. Even with the varying strokes I still need a break about every 6 lengths. Hey, guys. Had a nice (but wet) 10-mile run around D.C. this afternoon. Started at the hotel, ran down Pennsylvania Ave past the White House, through the Mall, down around the Jefferson, FDR, and Lincoln Memorials, and then back up the Rock Creek Park Trail to the hotel.
The first 4+ miles were a fartlek run of sorts, as I carried my camera, and there was lots of stopping and starting for pictures. Decent pace for the time that I was actually running, covering the 10 miles just under 8-minute pace.
Meeting a buddy for pizza tonight, then meetings all day tomorrow and Friday morning before heading home Friday afternoon.

Just remember that body position and breathing are (by far) the most important to work on. Those two go hand in hand. The rest will fall in after those two are hammered home.Thanks Tri-man. This Looks Tasty to Me. and is supposed to make one heck of a Pickle-Tini.I have struggled with calf cramps and have mentioned that I met an exercise physiologist at a tri clinic that turned me on to a home made sports drink with pink sea salt and lemon in water. I could be voodoo, but it sure seems to have kept the cramps away.

Ok guys, I need some serious help. I'm having major run problems. Tri coming up Saturday and I think I have regressed to not being able to complete a 5k. I haven't had a good run in quite a while. Today I ran a 5 miler at 8:30 pace or so, but really felt poorly afterward. Still don't feel right.
The conditions aren't that great right now - the run was at 88 degree weather (probably hotter on the road) with 60-70% humidity or so. Sufferfest. Even when I have had decent weather (75F, similar to what the tri will be), I struggled the last mile in a standalone 5k.
What can be done to mitigate heat effects? White runners cap? No cap? I'm kinda lost here and am starting to doubt my ability to have a decent race.

Running the 3.5-mile corporate challenge tomorrow.
I planned on a nice warm-up run today, but ended up playing soccer as some friends called me to play as a guest player for them. I'm going to be in MAJOR trouble tomorrow - and I'm not in tip top shape as it is.

:finger:Some of us would take an 8:30 pace for a 5 miler any day of the week and twice on race day.

It has more to do with really feeling bad during the run. I was running at 9:30/mile or so during the last bit. Just really having a hard time. I seem to be blowing up on every #######' run.

I love running the Mall. Being a history nerd probably helps.One thing I noticed during my five mile run on the treadmill tonight is that hot chicks just sweat differently from the rest of us. I had one on the treadmill next to me and as her run went on, she began to glisten and somehow managed to get even hotter. I, on the other hand, began to look more and more like a dying man thrashing through the jungle as my run continued.

During the summer I run as little as possible. I'll bike, swim, lift, but only run around 10 miles per week. I just hate the heat which isn't so much an issue on the bike. white runners cap might help but I've never liked wearing a hat while running, I hardly ever wear one otherwise either. When I do have to run I ensure I drink a lot of water before and gatorade during.

I will add that I have been running sans anything on top and just in shorts. I feel like this has kept me a bit cooler and he wind you feel does generate a bit of energy. It did take awhile before I was used to he heat though.

Great run. That would be really cool to do. For me I finished up the 8 miles I had left for my 11 yesterday. Not too bad of a run. A bit hot, but I made it through. I have to be used to the heat now. I am heading to Orlando tomorrow with the fam for vacation. I don't think I will get a break from the heat down there at all.
Having said that, I will be away from here for a week plus. Everyone have a great training week next week.

Congratulations to the Hawks & The City of Chicago! I was secretly pulling for them, but did want to give you the satisfaction of knowing so after you trashed my Wings
I also thought the Sox fans showed HUGE class the other night with the reception they gave Gallaraga 
I doubt you'll be a one-and-done'r. Cool part, if you haven't thought about it, is the number of times your boys will get to see you during the event. Unlike a running event, they'll get to see you start, come out of the water, enter and come out of transition, in out on the bike, same for the run and the finish. It is much more spectator friendly. AND, the lake is built in activity for the kids while you are on course. (Use this to convince your wife to let you sign up for another and thank me later).

Yup...I do basically the same group cycling workout every Tues. Last was 78ish with about 75% humidity. We had 6-8 of us (i.e. more time in the draft) burned about 840 calories (based on HR not power output) for 24.4 miles in 64 minutes. This Tues with only 4 people and actuallya little better time, but a temp of 60 and no humidity I ended up burning 775 calories. I can almost guarantee I expended more energy this Tuesday, but the weather stressed me about 10% less than the previous Tuesday. That's a pretty big difference and I didn't realize the difference was that big until I went back and looked at the data.

Sand, it's really most likely the heat. It takes at least a couple of weeks to get acclimated to the increased heat and humidity, and then even after you're used to it, it's still not possible to perform the same way you can when it's 20 degrees cooler. Just hang in there. Also, be sure to hydrate (as I'm sure you know).I'm also struggling right now -- the calf that I tweaked last weekend is really killing me, to the point I can't walk up and especially down stairs without grasping the bannister for my life. Did a long session with a heating pad last night and am trying to massage it as much as I can. I'm hoping it's not the "calf heart attack" that someone posted about earlier. Trying to be smart, which is not of my specialties. So I took today off, though I might try to get a 4-mile recovery run in tonight if the leg is feeling any better by then. If I don't go, that will be missing 2 of the last 3 runs after not missing one for 9 weeks.Very torn right now between wanting to do as well as possible in next week's 10-mile race and reminding myself that everything I've been doing for the last 2.5 months has really been aimed at the longer-term goal of building a base for the marathon training that starts at the end of June. I will probably err on the side of caution, but it's bumming me out.

I havne't been following- are you coming back from injury? Or are you healthy, but just struggling on the runs? Just because of the weather?Whatever the case- maybe you're seeing the paces getting posted in here and feeling like you have to keep up with the FFA Joneses? Maybe slow your pace down so you can run more comfortably. Practice your pace- I like timed out and backs for that- so that you're not hustling out too fast. Get your running lungs/legs back and gradually pick the pace up.re: heat. I always run in a white cap- keeps the sun out of my eyes (I've got a huge head and haven't found comfortable sunglasses to use) and keeps my hair out as well (longish hair). At races I'll put a sponge under the cap which helps. But again- I think it's a question of just slowing your pace and staying hydrated.Of course, for the race, HTFU- it's only 5k.

Sand: I'd recommend a white cap to reflect the heat and catch much of the sweat. As to feeling tired, it could be adjusting to the summer's heat, as others have noted. But check your training logs - have you given yourself adequate breaks? In particular, did you give yourself a rest period after your 5K swim? That was a big event and worthy of a couple/few down days. Floppo also makes a good point - we can all get caught up in pushing too hard or reaching too far in a desire to 'keep up' with others on the thread.

Healthy. Just having problems really struggling on runs. I believe the heat is the issue, but I haven't been running for long (and never been an endurance runner previously), so haven't really come up against this.Not trying to keep up the the FFA in here. I do ok for myself.Obviously I will HTFU as much as I can at the end of the tri. This long series of failed runs is getting to me, though.

Drinking water during the run seems to help me some, but I always take a long time to acclimate to the heat this time of year. I need a good 3 weeks of training in it, prior to even remotely being able to feel good after a run. Right now I'm running a good minute slower than my normal pace, and can't run more than 6 miles without my HR flying. Just keep plugging away in the heat, and your body will adjust. Walking during this time of year during a run is expected = for your tri, don't worry if you need to walk through water breaks, as many will be.Sand said:

Gotcha.Heat and base-fitness sound like your enemies right now. And Tri-man might be on to something in terms of allowing recovery- my old training routine was 3 weeks on, 1 week recovery (all workouts shorter and at easy, low-HR pace). It was really, really hard to go slow and easy- but better in the long run.Do your best on the race- I'm sure you'll be fine. After, I'd say to work on your pacing to find a comfortable zone to run in to get the miles in.Sand said:

Yeah, it is.I tend to use two programs - the web based training tracker at beginnertriathlete.com. Free to use and does a great job keeping track of things. For looking at Garmin data I use the demo version of Topofusion. Free (you really don't need more than the demo version), and offers output that is much better than anything else I've seen out there (excepting high end programs like WKO+). Topofusion is distinctly better than Garmin Connect, IMO.

I've been lurking in the thread off and on for the past couple of months. I just started running again after a 16 year lay off after high school and ran my first 5k this past weekend. But is anyone from the Boston area and know of any good 5K's to run in the months of July and August? I'm hoping to run one race a month to keep the motivation going. Plus I just loved the last race I had and I'm sort of jonesing to race again. But anyways, I got another race later this month, and one lined up in September and October, but nothing for the two summer months. I'll probably just pick something blindly off of coolrunnings.com but I'd figure I'd ask in here first.

I use Garmin Connect as well with my 305, never paid anything for it. I like the ability to compare the same runs over time, and see my calendar and totals pretty easily. It also has an Elevation Correction option that uses a gps database to correct the "guess" that the Garmin basically makes on altitude.Seven miles yesterday, one of the last runs I'll have on my "normal" lake loop as they're shutting down most of the trails around there for the next 3 months for a big piping project (the lake is one of a series of 4 that act as the water reservoirs for this area). Kinda bummed about that as I'll likely have to drive 15 minutes to another trail head to do most of my trail runs now, not a big deal for my weekend run but sucks for trying to squeeze one in during a work day. Planning on another similar run tomorrow, then off to Oregon for a bachelor party for the weekend up on Mt. Hood. I'll bring the shoes and Garmin, as my buddy training for the 100K is going to be there and we might go out for a short one just to get something in, but I know I won't be doing a long run. I need the break, after ramping up consistently over the past 5-6 weeks, I need a down week.

Hey, everybody. Done with meetings for the day, so now I'm just wasting time until we reconvene at 6:00 for dinner. I wish I had time to run, but there's just not time to do anything worthwhile. So I'll probably just take it easy on the libations tonight so I can knock out 4-5 miles tomorrow morning. It's just tough when 5:00 still feels like 4:00.
Had fun last night sharing a pizza and a few beers with a buddy of mine from RWOL. Was planning on getting out for a run this morning, but when you're used to drinking light beer, even just 4-5 pints of Stella and #9 have a way of making you want to stay in bed.
Cubs fans - Series tied 1-1, and the rubber match is tied 4-4 in the 8th. Who sucks less??

3.5 miles in 31:13With my knees cranky all day after soccer last night, my goal was simply 30-35 minutes at a 10 min pace. I did the first 2 miles in ~16:30 before my knee kinda gave out and I had to slow up and sorta half-limp my way for the next 1/4 mile. I ended up toughing it out for the last 1 1/4, but my pace was significantly slowed. Pretty sore right now, but I'll be fine in a day or two.Still happy with my time, even if it's nothing special. Even with a bit of a break mid-race and a beat-up knee, I managed to fall within my goal range and average less than 9 min/mile. For someone with no history of running at all, I thought I did just fine in regards to my own goals.Steve Tasker said:

I met my Camp Kids out last night, and served as a DD. I drank water all night, but didn't get to bed until 2:00. Being in my 40's, that means I was up at 4:00 to release some of the water, and then again at 5:30. I decided to just stay up and get my run in. It was already 76, and probably 85% humidity = brutal. I slowed down to 1:10 slower than normal pace for my 5 miler, and it seemed to do the trick. I was able to complete the run, and my HR didn't get up until the start of the 5th mile. I'll take it, as just completing runs right now is a challenge. This afternoon I'm taking a 16 mile ride with a friend who just purchased his first road bike (he's a decent runner, but I have no clue what pace he'll be able to do). We are then going to our little pool to try to get 1,200 yards (40 laps of our little pool). It's at least a plan!

If it is that warm, please take it ez. I'm more than 2 weeks into heat training, and running 1:10 slower than I should be still has my HR higher than I'm comfortable with. HTFU, but with sense.
