Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

Go Hawks!!! As mentioned in the Hawks thread, a young friend of ours is one of the Ice Crew (last two pics in the SI photos of them). We've heard that she gets a ring, too!
You are going to have to be more specific here GB, as young to you has a very different meaning than it does for the rest of us :boxing:
I'll play. Her:http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=57620

and we also know her (another HS friend of my son):

Holy cow you stink at punctuation.

It should be: I'll play her. And I also know her.

Did an easy 13 yesterday. Today is supposed to be a SOD with a 5-miler scheduled for Saturday, but my wife has to work tomorrow so I'm going to do it today instead as a recovery run.

By the way, big thanks to gruecd, 2Y2BB, and anybody else who successfully diagnosed my piriformis issues. Once I had a name attached to this, all it took was a quick google search to turn up some stretches that seem to have helped a lot. It's not close to 100% yet, but as of a week or so ago I couldn't bear to sit in my office for more than a half hour or so at a time, whereas now I'm sitting in my office typing away with no major problems.

My Update:

I met my Camp Kids out last night, and served as a DD. I drank water all night, but didn't get to bed until 2:00. Being in my 40's, that means I was up at 4:00 to release some of the water, and then again at 5:30. I decided to just stay up and get my run in. It was already 76, and probably 85% humidity = brutal. I slowed down to 1:10 slower than normal pace for my 5 miler, and it seemed to do the trick. I was able to complete the run, and my HR didn't get up until the start of the 5th mile. I'll take it, as just completing runs right now is a challenge. This afternoon I'm taking a 16 mile ride with a friend who just purchased his first road bike (he's a decent runner, but I have no clue what pace he'll be able to do). We are then going to our little pool to try to get 1,200 yards (40 laps of our little pool). It's at least a plan!
I can identify with this. My tri tomorrow - at 8 AM tomorrow the Weather Channel says 82F and 82% humidity. Ugh. Someone is going to have to scrape me off the pavement.
Ditto (Kick ### tomorrow BTW), Olympic TRI Sunday with highs near 90 at the end and sky high humidity with a big chance for rain and storms. Couple this with the fact that there are river currents to contend with and if the wind is heading the wrong way this could be a miserable swim. :bag: :X You know what is more nerve racking than packing your own transition bag for a (2) transition triathlon? Packing your daughter's gear for a (2) transition kids triathlon. I am nervous as hell for her. Her tri is tomorrow. Racks on the car, bikes on the rack and we are ready to go I think. She has grown out of her tri top so we ran all over town today before we found her one she could wear (no eBay specials for my princess - geez this stuff is pricey when you pay full price). Then, as I was airing her tires, the head snapped off my high pressure pump :lmao: Luckily, I got to my LBS 5 minutes before close AND they gave me a new one as they found it was under a 5 year warranty. I'll have to see if my daughter will do a race report. I am hoping for big things. She has just finished up with running club at middle school and has signed up for the HS X Country Team and has done some rides and swims with me, which is way more than what she did for the 2 kids tris she did last year.

:lmao: WHY AREN'T YOU RACING BELLE ISLE SUNDAY!?!?!??!?! There is still time.
I smelll A podium finish, not-quite-so-big-pysically-but-big-in-all-ways-that-count man!! :lmao:
The only chance for hardware in this household this weekend is my daughter today. Motor City draws studs from all over and the mid life crisis division should be think with talent. I am just hoping (and stressing about) a much more enjoyable swim than the one I had two weeks ago. Hopefully I'll be back in a few hours to report big things from my daughter (and will have proud dad stories regardless).

Race itself sucked. I'm sure the humidity didn't help, but I think it had more to do with the lack of proper sleep the last 3-4 nights and the excessive amount of alcohol that I consumed on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Was OK through the first 5K (20:31), but then struggled on the backside, finishing in 42:34. Nowhere near a PR, and even further away from the elusive sub-40.

Big props to my friend and high school classmate Dot, who was the 2nd overall female with a PR of 34:05 (5:29 pace). :)

Oh, and just so you guys know, I'm about to re-set the bar for Race Stalking. Remember these numbers:

635

325

925

3207

867

894

Once the pictures come out, this is what it's gonna look like:   :bowtie:

Have a great day!

Was slated for a 12 mile run this AM. Rainy cold morning in June in Utah, go figure. Anyway, due to having to be redirected during our route by UDOT that would not let us cross a bridge, our 12 miler ended up being 14. Still feeling pretty good.

You mean other than my daughter?! Kiddo got AG 2nd & 3rd Girl overall in amazing fashion. This was a river swim which is rare in kids tris around here. I told her to not fall for waking, even if you can as it burns WAY more energy. She heeded the advice and came out of the water nearly dead last, but strong for the bike. By the end of the 10K bike, she had passed all but one girl and bragged about hitting 20 MPH on a FLAT course. After a great T2, she powered out a great run that culminated in a dead sprint to the finish with another girl who just nosed her out an won the 11-12 AG. SUPER PROUD DAD here. She doesn't quite feel up for writing a race report now, but I'll see what I can do (we all know it'll be much more interesting than mine tomorrow). I am gassed. We spent all morning in the heat and humidity to rush right from the event to see my sons LL team win in the bottom of the 6th (every day being a dad is a good one, BUT THIS IS A REAL GOOD ONE). I am pounding water and am going to try and nap. If I am this zonked after being a cheerleader, racing should be a crusher tomorrow.Nice race gruecd (and props to our adopted local Dot). Darn good race for being on vapors. for Sand!

Never poked my head in here before.....but this is my thread.

I have battled stress fractures/knee injuries for the better part of the last 4years. Yall know the drill....run...hurt...ice rest for a few months...run again...hurt....lift weights to gain weight....heal up u think....lose weight...run....get hurt again.

But i've decided to get much more serious than in the past....i've dropped 20 pounds in the past 5 months....mostly diet and not lifting weights.

Ran a 5K about 2 months back....got 19:50...which was okay.

But now my shin flared up to the point I couldn't ignore it(like for the past 3 months). So I have my second doctors appointment...with a sports medicine guy in two weeks. Up until then it's swim only and eliptical for me. Thinking about getting a road bike in the future...any suggestions for a cheap one? Thank in advance.

Good luck to anyone racing this weekend.

ETA: 2young2bbald......that's awesome...congrats. She sounds like she has a bright future.

Allright. I have finished the US-England game, so have some time to wax eloquent. My splits are from memory, but they are close. This morning I woke up at 4:30 to get going to the park. I managed to pack well and didn't have any issues there. Got there and got handed #69. Lovely. My wife rolled her eyes and I got lots of comments as I walked around. Three guys fought over marking me. Geez.

Swim: This was a TT style start, 5 second intervals. My #69 seeding was way too low. I managed to pass probably 20 people. I did swing out too wide on the first leg and cost myself some time.

Final time: 5:56 for 400yds. Slower than what I wanted, for sure. I thought 5:30 was pretty readily in reach. Still, I didn't get passed at all and passed bunches. When I got out I was behind swimmer #27. I'm sure she was slower than many others, but man people lie about their swim capabilities.

Bike: This is a tough bike course, a good bit harder than anything else around here. My Garmin said 1300ft of climbing over 13.05 miles. Here is the elevation profile. Not only is it up and down, but the downhills are nothing but sweeping, technical turns. It is hard to stay in aero position for long at all - lots of tight turns and lots of gear changes. And there are two turnarounds. Earlier this year I did a time trial out there and averaged 20.5mph. 21 was my goal - this is an excellent speed on this course.

Final time: 37:25 for 13.09 miles. 21.0 mph on the nose. Gotta love that. I was passed three times and passed 8-9 people. My only issue in this ride was that I adjusted my right aerobar because the pad was angled wrong. I evidently didn't tighten it down enough and it came loose. It came loose late, so no real effect on my performance. Really happy with this part of the tri.

Run: Here is where the wheels fall off. I knew they would and tried my best to stay hydrated and pour water on myself in transition, etc. Right out of the gate I ran into problems with a calf that wanted to cramp. I stopped at a convenient signpost and stretched it out. It felt better after that, but didn't make me any faster. The fact is that the tri started with a heat index of around 90. By the time the run came around it was over 100. Hotter than that on the road itself. And with the humidity above 80% it was a jungle.

Final time: 25:28 for 3 miles. Brutally slow. But I can honestly say it was all I had. The run course was just as tough as the bike course. Nothing but up and down. The last mile was unshaded, which made things that much worse. I think I was passed four times and I passed one. I was hoping for 7:30 miles. 8:30 miles is what I got.

Final time: 1:12:54. This was good for 7th in my AG. To give perspective on how hard the course was this year, this time would have been good for 17th last year. I believe I finished 52/~500 or so in total. I'll be able to judge my actual splits when the full results come out.

This time was also good enough for 3rd in the Beginner category. I'll take it. I missed out on 2nd by 8 seconds (doh!) and 1st by a few minutes. This was my last chance to be classified as a beginner, so probably my one and only podium.

It took me a while to cool down and I didn't feel too good there for a while. I still need to work on getting used to the heat. It really got to me today. However, my wife and kid got to watch and caught me at all the good spots (except at the end when I ran in - I evidently looked like hammered death). And my 4 year old got to see me "win". That was pretty cool.

Great race, Sand, and congrats to your daughter, 2Young. Good luck to you today!

Heading out sometime this morning for 15 easy.

Hope you all have a great day!

Nice job, Sand. I hope my friends and I never "mature" to the point where the assignment of #69 seems unremarkable.
Yeah - I never expected people to be mature about it. Hell, if one the guys I know would have had it I would have been all over it.BTW, Great race for your daughter 2Y! Just don't enter her in any of my races if you could be so kind...(oh, and today is a definite day off. My calves are really, really sore with the cramping issues from yesterday. Worth it, though!)

Motor City Olympic Triathlon Preliminary Race Report (so I can nap).

I sent another Olympic PR by 21 Minutes :lmao: doing it in 2:30. Everything went well. I swam a sub 30 1,500 meters @ 29:04 (Garmin, with the new firmware had me at a distance of 1.02, on the beach start, so the swim was quite fast for me). Hammered the bike, for me, to an average of 21.9 MPH and averaged 8:16s on the run. Amazing how a good swim sets up the rest of the race. I'll post more later after I veg watching the Tigers and some NASCAR action.

Congrats on the PR. Could you do me a favor and veg a little less and put a bit more effort into the Tigers. Could use a few runs late. TIA.Very cool that your daughter had such a great race yesterday. My oldest son is still bragging that he walked the whole 2K on Thanksgiving. Needless to say we have a few years til we are having family racing events.

SAND - Good job on the race. Take it easy on those legs today. That heat can be really tough, you should be happy with that run.

Great race, 2Young! Congrats on the HUGE PR!!! I followed up yesterday's craptastic 10K with a 15-miler this afternoon at 8:06 average pace. Warm and super humid out there, so I was sweating like a fiend. Had to stop twice to refill my water bottle.

Tomorrow's schedule calls for 8 GA miles with 10 x 100M strides, so thankfully nothing too taxing. Hope you all have a great night. Go Celtics!!

  to the 2Young family dominance, and Sand, and dear old Poppa.

Welcome to benson! I'm a little surprised at the injuries when you're running such fast pacing. It might be a matter of acclimating to the overall balance of your training, or maybe your body is still adjusting to the weight loss.

---

I really need to start my tapering for next week. Did 2 hours of biking on Saturday, all at steady pacing. Worked on different gears, averaging 19 mph. I doubt that I can do much better than that pace for the 56 miles ...and really, I'd be happy to just maintain that pace (and think I can). Did about a 2 hour brick today - 45 minutes of biking, then an 8 mile run at a steady 8:00/mile (recognizing my legs will be hurting much more during the race). Targeting a long swim on Tuesday and a moderate swim on Thursday. I'll add a bit of biking and running, but I can't do anything more at this point but rest up. Forecast is still looking pretty brutal (Sand's sending his race weather my way).

Motor City Olympic Triathlon Race Report

Good morning routine and it helped to be only about 12 miles or so from the race site, which is a large island park in the middle of the Detroit River. Got down there in plenty of time to set up both transition sites as this was a 2 transition event. Parked and set up my run gear and rode down to T1 at the beach. With 800+ racers I lucked out in that someone had put a HUGE Christmas package bow on the end of my transition rack.

SWIM: Last year for the sprint, I had a miserable swim due to the river currents and some serious thrashing at the start. Due to the currents, they moved the Oly and Sprint swims in and did an on the beach start. Being short, I am not built for high stepping in the water, so instead, just bided my time until I could start dolphin diving (which few other were doing, but helped a bunch). The first 500 meter out leg was shallow and the taller guys were having trouble with the lack of water depth (no whining about my height for a change). Overcast skies made for easy sighting of the buoys. At the 500 mark there was a drop off at the yacht club and we made a left turn out towards the river. At the second turn buoy another swimmer intentionally pulled on my ankle to accelerate around the turn. After getting thrashed 2 weekends I go, I’d had it and 2 hand dunked the guy to regain my momentum. This set me up nice for the 800 meter straight away. I just chased the bubbles for this leg, drafted and maybe sighted 7 or 8 times the whole way. Next was a turn for home and against the river current. I had to dodge quite a few walkers in the water that could not fight the current. During this stretch of about 200 meters I kept waiting for the 30-minute alarm I’d set to go off on the Garmin. Did some more dolphin swimming and then ran in. Garmin had me at 28:46 for the swim; official time was around 29:04, getting better and no so bad for just picking up swimming less than 2 years ago.

T1: Still hate socks, but single walls are much easier than doubles. Because this was a 2 transition event, everything (wetsuit, towels, goggles, cap) had to be pack, which obviously added to transition time.

BIKE: First thing on the bike I noticed was that my heart rate was only 160 compared to 185 two weeks ago and my legs felt fresh. I decided right there that my mission was to stay north of 20 the whole ride. The Oly did 4 laps plus a mile+ of the island. The first lap was uneventful, but I was kicking it with all the team guys on fancy rigs (and they weren’t running away from like they usually do – except a few). Once back around to the beach, we encountered heavy traffic as the sprint athletes were starting their ride. 800+ bikes on an island might not seem like it would get all that crowded, but it sure did in parts. When I ended the ride, I knew I would be over 21 MPH, 21.9 far exceeded any expectations.

T2: Quick & smooth. Due to how long transition was, I am not sure I beat a minute, but I think it was close.

RUN: Due to the make-up of the island, the run was a bit longer than a standard Oly at 6.6 miles, with about 3 of the miles on a rough nature trail with a few bridges. Looking at the Garmin data, my first mile was 7:54, but I just couldn’t hold the pace. While the heat and humidity was slightly lower than yesterday, it was still there and on the nature trail, if was miserable as there was a ton of standing water and my glasses fogged so bad I had to take them off. Held on for 8:16 MM on average for the run, but unfortunately got passed by 2 guys in my AG in the last ½ mile. I started a kick, but could feel cramps coming on the tops of my thighs and this is not the big race of the summer, so I just kept pace in.

I have to admit, when I saw 2:30 on the race clock when I crossed I was a bit shocked. I was really hoping for something in the 2:45 range, but really didn’t even think this was realistic.

Looks like the Tigers took care of business while I was napping too.

Awesome! What kind of elevation changes on that bike course? Also, just FYI, but the Tigers haven't played yet today. Clemson (really the only Tigers that count for snot!) are playing now...

As flat as they come. Garmin showed 95 feet of elevation gain which came from a couple of rollers and an up/down sharp turn on to the island (this caused speeds to reduce as you had to come off the aero bars or likely crash out and/or brake for the turn).

Glad most of you had a better events than I did this last week. After laying a turd on Wednesday I had an unbelievely tough weekend. I doubled up this weekend an will have two race reports later.

I thought about this moment this morning and laughed to myself. I preach good sportsmanship to the kids and try to practice what I preach. It was pure reaction. This was the deepest part of the swim course, at about 20 feet deep, and there were swimmers all around us. Its a legal move by the guy and I suppose I just snapped. I have to admit, I don't feel bad about it, but should have just kept swimming, versus worry about some other guy.

My splits came in last night. Pretty excited about the bike split, seeing as I have owned a road bike for less than a year and started riding from scratch last year. My AG was weak on the swim (but super strong everywhere else, as 35-39 tends to be), but I was still 5th percentile among all males there. My rankings:

Swim: 1/40

Bike: 3/40

Run: 10/40

Overall: 7/40

I was top third and top half in the transitions. Obviously I need to work on those a bit, as well as (duh) my running. Damn heat.

Oh, and a pic of the machine on race day. Most importantly, she got me from bike start to finish without throwing a chain or running off the course (I managed those two feats last year). A clean bike leg.

Hammered the bike, for me, to an average of 21.9 MPH and averaged 8:16s on the run. Amazing how a good swim sets up the rest of the race. I'll post more later after I veg watching the Tigers and some NASCAR action.
 Sand - Great job!

Everyone, thanks for inspiring me to register for the Charlottesville International Tri! I also joined the Tri-club.

Q: How many races do most of you do each year? I've been pretty happy with 3-5 a year when I was just running. In the last 12 months, I've done one Olympic Tri (another at the end of July will make it two), two HIMs, Two half marathons, and a couple 2 mile races. I could sprinkle some shorter races in but overall I'm content with this amount.

:) ;) to the 2Young family dominance, and Sand, and dear old Poppa.

Any advice on training then? I would love to get into some longer races and possibly tri's at some point.

I also almost religiously ice my legs with compression ice packs.

Thank you in advance.

Another great weekend on here :goodposting:

Grue: While I'd kill to run in 68 degrees, it is all what you are used to. Way to make the best of it! Can't wait to see if you can improve on your typical race stalking!

Sand: Great race, and another FBG podium :wolf: Your bike just looks fast! Is that a wheel cover on the rear? Also, as a Clemson grad, I agree that they are the most relevant Tigers :wolf:

2Young'sYoung'n: GREAT race = Proud poppa, and proud 10k threaders!

2Young: 2:30 is smoking!!! Great race, and write-up. I :wolf: at "2-hand dunked!"

Poppa: :wolf: for a race report. NOTHING in this thread gets me more excited (except for maybe some good race-stalking") then seeing "Poppa" peek in!!!!

Benson: Welcome to the thread!! Have you been fit for shoes? Just guessing that you might not have the right shoes, or that they might need to be replaced more often.

FUBAR: Welcome to the tri-club!

Tri-Man: I for some reason have difficulty believing you taper like most!!

My Update:

I had a good weekend of training. My Shammie's and Koozie's "race" got postponed as the river we planned on floating flooded on Thurs/Fri.

Saturday: I did a 41 mile bike ride in wicked winds (18 mph). I was with the wind for the first 15, straight into it for the next 20 then with it again for the last 5. That 20 miles into the wind was brutal, but a great chance to get some quality miles in. With very few hills, wind is needed to get good resistance. I took my road bike, and am glad I did, as some of the gusts might have knocked me off my tri-bike. I kept my HR under 172 the whole time, and kept my average speed over 19. Considering the wind + 94 degree temps, I'll take it.

Sunday: 88 degrees and humid at 8:00 am = 6 miles slow, was a heck of a workout

Today: I did my favorite short ride today (16.5 miles), but the winds beat me again. Today I should have taken the tri-bike out, but roughed on my road bike again. I tried to treat the ride as a TT = I wanted speed. I managed 30+ during two different stretches, but still only managed a 20.5 MPH average. The wind kicked my butt coming in, as I was averaging 22+ with just 6 miles left to go.

Sunday Co-ed relay...I was doing the 17.1 mile bike. Averaging just north of 25 mph when...

Play this...

Sing these lyrics.

Where is the Mavic car we needed the most

You kick up the cranks and the power is lost

They tell me your black tubes fade to flat

They tell me your pressure’s gone away

And I don't need no SAGin' in

You hold your line just to hit a new slow

You're faking a smile when the novices go

You tell me your time been way outta line

Tire falling to pieces at wrong time

And I don't need no SAGin' in

Because you had a bad day

Your front went down

You sing a sad song, Rachael waiting around

You say you were slow

You tell me that’s a tri

You work at a smile and you go for a run

You ran a 6k

The clock don't lie

You're hiking back home and competition don’t mind

You ran a 6k

You ran a 6K

Well you need a spare right away

The point is they laugh at where you place

And I don't need no SAGin' in

You had a bad day

Your front went down

You sing a sad song, Rachael STILL waiting around

You say you were slow

You tell me that’s a tri

You work at a smile and you go for a run

You ran a 6k

The clock don't lie

You're hiking back home and you’re really in a bind

You ran a 6k

(Dooh.. not my day...)

Sometimes the bike goes on the blink

And the whole thing turns out wrong

You might not make it back and you know

That Nicole thinking oh why that long

And I'm not wrong

(yeah...)

So where are the Nike’s when you need them the most

Oh click clack

You kick up the cleats and the race is lost

Cause you had a bad day

Cutoff clock ticking sound

You sing a sad song as Setup breaks it down

You say you were slow

You tell me that’s a tri

You work at a smile and you go for a run

You ran a 6k

Been passed by a trike

And how does it feel for last place time

You ran a 6k

You ran a 6k

I'm afraid to count. A couple 5ks, one 10 miler, one half marathon, one 3.3 mile swim, one bike TT, one bike century, and one sprint tri done so far. Coming up are one (brutal) hill run, two more tris, and maybe a marathon at the end of the year. So one event/month or so this year.
