Ran a 10k in June (1 Viewer)

Looks like everyone is doing well. I've been running a few times a week and just started uping my mileage. Which isn't much right now.

Do any of you have the MOTOACTV?

Thinking about selling my Garmin 305 and getting one.

I don't know what a MOTOACTV is, but I know I'd rather have my 305. It's sad to say this, but I think I'd part with one but not both nuts before I part with my garmin.

I don't, but my friend swears it's the best thing out there, and he's a tech geek who's tried everything.

I'm a huge Android fan and a tech geek myself so to me it just makes sense. I would like to wait until the next iteration but I don't think I can hold off.Anyone want to buy my 305 w/heart rate monitor?

I was going to say yes but I am intrigued by the moto thing. Let me know how it is. Fathers day is coming up

Ended the weekend on a somber note. I was on the trails yesterday running my 18 miler when I received a call from my mom that her husband (step father) was in ICU and being put on life support. Long story short, we watched him take his last breaths last night after succumbing to cancer. What a f'ed up disease it is. As I finished up my run, I couldn't help but feel incredibly lucky and a touch guilty for being able to do what we do out there.
Sorry to hear this. My prayers are with you and your family.

Finally started feeling good after a couple week malaise of allergies (or something). Hot, hot run at lunch - went over to the new trail system only a mile and a half away and ran up and down steep hills for a while. Good run - 6 miles with 650ft. of climbing. That's definitely getting into "hilly" territory (you know, somewhere between BnB and PSL territory). Finished up the day with a 2,000yd swim - finished that up with 10x100 on 2:00. Held 1:17-1:19 in the drag suit through that, which is pretty decent.

Tomorrow, more swimming. After that, more swimming.

3 miles at 10:00 pace in 40 MPH wind gusts.

I hate wind and I was gonna blow this off but then I got my Bob Harper tweet about no excuses so I went out and did it. Running with the wind was awesome, running against it sucked.

The Man- Wish I was as "out of shape" as you. Nice that your wife runs with you.

For PSL and BnB - if you guys are in the market there is a good sale at Jenson for Michelin Pro Race 3s. $50 for two with free shipping. Not bad at all if you are looking for tires.

Thanks...I was just shopping for them.Competitive Cyclist has some smoking deals going on now plus an add'l 20% off apparell and access thru Sat.

My running has taken a major backseat to being a father/husband lately, guess it just has to be this way for a while. The wife is officially on doctors orders to "take it easy" now. The 2 year old being transitioned to a big boy bed has been absolutely dreadful. While I don't mind doing everything I have found myself slightly depressed and I can only figure its from lack of running.

I'll end my rant at that!

Everyone else here really getting cranked up, its fun to read as always.

Sorry to read about the loss Ned.

I'm still looking for a true sprint tri...swim 50 yards, bike 50 miles, run 50 yards.
That would be PERFECT!!
 No one gets the table slanted in their direction until I get the MiniMe Division.
Every time I hear you push for this I think
Crap. I just purchased two on chainlove.com for $65 a couple of weeks ago (which was a GREAT price). These are great tires and I highly recommend to anyone. _________________________

My update:

Did Plyo and Ab Ripper last night and Back and Biceps (LOVE that workout) this morning. Might do cardioX tonight if I decide not to :banned: during my late lunch date.

Had another good interval session today. Today was 8 miles with 5 x 600m @ 5K pace. I am still feeling drained a bit from the weekend, but I believe that I nailed these pretty well today. All of them were done in the 2:05 range +/- :03 on each one. I have not looked at the data yet, but I was pretty even for these.

Though I am still tired and need some rest, I feel as though I am slowly climbing out of my funk and getting into a groove.

Have a great day all.

Non running related: Anyone else think that PSL's alias here should be "Duece Bigalow". More power to you. You deserve it. Play on playa.

I know this has been asked before, but how do you know what your 5K pace is
A guess: Run a 5K. Your time = 5K pace in longer runs???Running in the 10K Crescent City Classic Saturday in New Orleans. They say over 20K people will be there, argh!! I have been dealing with a shin problem, but it only hurts the first .5 miles and after I run, so I keep going. Should have time to heal up before training for my longer runs in the winter.

Whoever recently mentioned that runners do not look as good in race photos as they do in person,I give you photos from my trail race Sunday as living proof ;) (Me + Stalking Photos).

 I give this a solid 7.8/10.0 on the race-stalking scale! You captured some hotness, with some erect nipples thrown in. Well-done my friend...well-done!

I was certainly due to a solid effort. Imagine if it'd been 80 degrees.

Sean - Did you decide if you're gonna go ahead with the Higdon plan?

Yeah I think I'm going to go with that. Was a crazy weekend with the kids. Still doing some reading (this thread is a great source of info).

Congrats to you on your 5k time and to all the other recent racers. You all are some fast mother####ers! I hope I can approach that level.

Got in 4 extremely hung over miles this morning in 34:22. Pretty sure I was sweating Sam Adams. My head stopped throbbing after the first half mile or so and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.

Ned - really sorry to hear about your loss.

Hello friends...

Hope everyone had a good "off season" and it seems like folks have already ramped up nicely. I am HOPING I'm getting close to doing the same... those who are freinds with me on FB already know my deal, but let me explain. No, there is no time. Let me sum up:

November 19 - I did a 10 miler and thought my ankles were going to fall off. Literally had to walk 3 times to settle the pain down (located in the joint itself, front & exterior of both ankles). Decided it was time to shut it down for a while. Kept doing Taekwondo with my sons x2/week and did some biking on the trainer.

November 29 - Day one of P90X (my second cycle). Stayed consistent for Phase 1 & 2, Phase 3 not quite so much, but finished.

January 31 - 8 weeks off running (and 1 week into P90X Phase 3), it was a gorgeous day, so I went for a run. 5 miles. Very, very, very dumb. Pulled my hammy and destroyed my ankles. Same pain as before, but much worse. Could barely walk for 2 days. Decided I needed to FINALLY get some professional help.

February 3 - Met with an Orthopedic specialist who confirmed NO structural damage to the ankle joint. Good news. Sent me to a podiatrist, who recommended physical therapy.

February 8 - Gait analysis at the physical therapy clinic. Bottom line, I've been running in the wrong shoes for years (need neutral, not support), and my gait is a mess. Primary problem is extreme tightness in my calves, achilles and ITB, which cause my feet to flair out to the side with every stride. Lots of stress on my ankles and hips. 100% "fixable."

Since then, x2/week I've been doing PT. Stretching/massaging lower legs and running on the "Zero G" treadmill, which uses air pressure to lift your body up so you run on a % of your body weight. I started at 70% for 30 minutes or so and finally yesterday ran 1 single mile on a normal treadmill with no pain. I have to take it very slowly, and will continue the PT, but I feel like I'm on the verge of being back. Just in time for race season...

May 26 - SoldierField 10 mile (I'll be lucky if I can actually run this one)

June 24 - Twin Lakes sprint triathlon

September 8 - 3D festival 1/2 Ironman in East Tawas, MI

Assuming my recovery stays on track, I will add more races (triathlons and possibly a 1/2 mary).

I just got the Garmin 910xt - mostly just used it on the bike so far, but can't wait to use it in the pool and hopefully soon running. It is slick as hell.

Pffft. Here is the 24-year-old, 3rd-place female from my 5K on Friday night. She ran 21:38, and more importantly, her ### was smoking hot in those black pants!

21:38 is just slightly faaster than my PR and would be an achievable time if I had a rabbit to chase. Too bad I wasn't participating in this race. :sadbanana:

 She looks alright in a running photo and is likely smoking while watching her in real-life. Still waiting to see if you can do better than a 7.8 from your race. Thus far you are well behind.

The CCC is reputed to a cluster. Big problems with strollers on the course, bandits to the point that they block runners, etc. Get as far forward as you can. Be prepared to run on the sidewalk/neutral ground.

:jealous:-----Small update: Destroyed my shoulders tonight. But I did hit a 6:51 500yd set in the drag suit. As usual with these things I planned to go out at endurance pace. Four laps in I'm seeing the red haze and hanging on for dear life. The Sand style took over practice tonight - we'll see what my body feels like tomorrow after that.

2Y2BB - funny stuff, and nice pics. Great race report, too. I know how much you enjoy your adventures!

Wraith - hey there, buddy!

---

So I felt OK after my race on Sunday. On Monday, I did a mixed sets of 200 lunges, 120 squats (with 10 lb weights in hand), and 80 simulated kettlebell swings using a 20 lb weight. Now my legs/butt are toasted ...feelin' the burn. But this is a good thing, or it will be when I can walk normal again!

Busy day yesterday, so I didn't get out until almost 8:00 for my 8-miler, but it was a good one. Legs felt pretty heavy for the first 4-5 miles (typical during the taper), but they woke up towards the end. Averaged 8:13 for the first four miles and 7:31 for the last four miles, including the last mile at 7:09.

Rest day today, just a 5-miler tomorrow, and another rest day on Friday. I'm gonna get bored. I hate tapering.

I'm sure it's been debated heavily, but I have been wondering how my body would handle a 2 week taper vs. a 3 week taper. I've handled this training cycle as a mini Pfitz cycle and planned on a 3 week taper, but I have to admit I've contemplated tapering 2 weeks instead of 3. I can't shake the feeling that I'm going to lose some of that razor sharp feeling I have right now if I taper for 3 weeks. Maybe I'm just being overly paranoid...

I've done three week tapers with good success. The key is to still get some quality, lower mileage workouts in each week (i.e. 1st week a tempo and a 12 miler; 2nd week a speed; 3rd week a short tempo concentrated on race pace). This way you maintain your fitness, while still getting all the benefits of recuperation.

My useless content for the day:

:lmao: Ok, explain this to me like I am an idiot. Why the bar they have to jump over anyway? Isn't that a recipe for disaster or injury? Is there a point where you can't ride anymore or soemthing for your transition?-----------

Hilly 6.5 miles covered today averaging about 8:30 per mile. Legs felt great throughout and I probably will try to go out and do 8 more tonight to finish up the miles I need for today.

Will probably not be back in here until next Monday. Have a great weekend and Easter!

My useless content for the day:

What the hell is that, anyway? Cyclocross? No idea why you'd have a barrier across the track... My training so far this week consists of 3 bike rides to go with my woo-hoo one mile treadmill run and TKD class last night:

Sunday - 31 mile ride

Tuesday - 17 mile ride

Wednesday - 14 mile ride (recovery pace mostly)

Thinking I'm going to try to hit P90x Chest, shoulders & arms + Ab Ripper tonight.

I a big believer in short tapers for long events and long tapers for short events. Hunter Allen (Training Peaks) sold me on it. Fitness over freshness for long distance, freshness over fitness for short events.

Still hurting from the ride on Sunday so yesterday was 22 mile recovery on the TT bike (actually a work trip). Followed that up with 7 miles behind my 14 yo son on the mtb as he ran. He did an 8 miler with me 2 months ago and hasn't run over a mile since. Here are his splits...

mile 1: 9:33

mile 2: 9:04

mile 3: 8:25

mile 4: 8:13

mile 5: 8:47, he sprinted a major hill here

mile 6: 8:53, had to navigate thru 200 people lined up on the sidewalk for free Ben and Jerry's ice cream

mile 7: 7:14 :jawdrop:

1:00:10 for 7 miles, 8:35 pace.

I have a feeling he'll smoke me in the half mary we are planning on doing. He dropped the hammer in that last mile like it was nothing.

My useless content for the day:

It is certainly some sort of Cyclocross. re: CS&T's = That is a brutal workout. The Slow Mo pushups to start off destroy my arms. I still can't do the flipping one armed  , and I don't like the Chick in it.

My update:

Last night I had a sharp pain in my hip ,which I haven't experienced since diagnosed last Fall. It felt normal this morning (normal being the pain I am used to). I don't know if it is from Plyo or from my little runs to the Rec Center. I did my elliptical workout and skipped my jog to/from as a precaution. I'll do plyo again next week, but will modify the moves that are most difficult with my hip (swing kicks and military march) and will hopefully also get back to my little runs. Tonight is Ab Ripper and tomorrow is going to hopefully be a hard 20 miles followed immediately by legs and back.

My useless content for the day:

Cyclocross. Biking with obstacles to go over (actually looks pretty fun). Big in Belgium, Netherlands, and other Nordic countries. It is reasonably popular in the states as a winter cycling activity. All the big bike companies sell cyclocross specific bikes.Oh, and :bye: Wraith. Good to see you are back into it.
