Damn man, sorry we missed each other. I might be heading back that way at some point next year though... looking for a spring half and maybe doing the Phoenix marathon, which is probably a couple of hours away from you if you live in Tucson, but if you happen to be running the race too it would be cool to meet up.

I do a different variation of the push up thing. 2013 was not a good year for it but in 2012 I made it into October doing at least 100 incline push ups a day. In consecutive sets. Going to revive it again in 2014 and I have started getting into it lately.

Incline push ups meaning hands on the floor and feet up on a chair, couch, steps. To start out I usually try to do 4 sets of 25 with a few minutes rest in between sets. As I do them more, the reps increase. I do at least 100 in one sitting (meaning within a 15 minute span or so) and maybe others scattered throughout the day. The scattered ones don't count towards the at least 100 consecutive but count towards overall day total.

I think that this really helps with running and to maintain strength when getting into a gym isn't always possible. When I was really into it in 2012 at one point I had about a 4 month stretch of not setting foot in a gym, just doing the push ups. But when I went in to the gym, I was lifting close to the amounts I was doing on a regular gym routine because of the strength maintenance the push ups provided.

I've run in 1260's all year, love em. Have over 300 miles on each pair, getting close to time to replace but I think i can squeeze a few more miles out of them.

Whoa ...impressive!

Sick deal @ Joe's NB Outlet on NB 1260's today if you don't have clown feet. $39 for shoes that were originally $144
 for that price...Im loyal to no shoe and will give it a try.
I've become partial to Saucony lately and love my new Zoots, but these seems worthwhile. I need a trail shoe.

ETA: the MT1010 is at a sweet price, but after reading some reviews it's obvious why. They seem to fall apart easily.

I love NB road shoes, I do not have the same opinion of their trail shoes. They are all undersized (by a lot) and don't hold up unless you jump to the super expensive ones. I run the Asics Gel Kahana 6 in trail shoes and love them. Just ran the 50k in them and had zero issues.

I am hoping to run the Diamondbacks 5k again. They coincide it with fan fest.

Don't feel too bad - Juxt and I were at the same race as Annyong this fall and we even told him what our penises looked like ...and still couldn't hook up with him.
Damn, seeing as this is the FFA I figure it would have been like three telephone poles walking around. Just seems unpossible to miss each other.

Went for a run today and my quad is fuxor'd. I strained it about 3-4 weeks ago but it wasn't anything that hindered training. Taper week last week helped heal it further to the point that I had forgotten about it. Flared up on Saturday but ran through it knowing that the result would probably be where I am today. I abused it. Today was the first real run since and it was painful throughout. As I got warmed up it was better but it's trash now, hurts to go up & down steps. Flat, straight walking feels ok but anything else sucks.

Any tips other than the usual R.I.C.E. and stay off it for a week or two? Most of what I've read points to a grade 2 strain which recommends R.I.C.E. and staying off of it until the pain goes away. TIA, I'll hang up and listen

RICE + EPO and HgH.

Foam roller + yoga. Been using the foam roller, along with the plank challenge, since my calf pull Friday but started getting that twitch yesterday so I broke down and did yoga too. Feel much better today, probably do it again tomorrow.

Mother ####### calves. Had hoped to get back out there tomorrow, but the way it feels I'm betting it'll be next week instead. Right one is still crazy tight and I can feel the strain whenever I get up and walk after sitting an extended period of time. I'm sure I could get up and run, but I'd just re-aggravate it in a couple weeks.

MAC, would it help to (carefully) stand on the edge of a stair and do some slow dips to help stretch it back out?

Got to a major (for me) milestone yesterday be crossing over 100 miles swam in 2013. My biggest year prior was 2010, at 90.19 and last year I only swam 79.05. Doing the math, I've done 78 swims this year for an average of 2,261 yards per swim. When I decided late last year, that I would take a shot at the 5K swim, the "lecture" I gave myself was that, no matter what (hangover, soreness from a race the day before, cold pool, etc) I would never skip a swim or cut one short and stuck to it though some brutal swims. As I planned out training for the 5K, it started to pan out that I had a shot at 100 miles, but it would be a stretch as, other than the three summer months, my swimming is confined to Mon/Wed for only an hour each week. It was cool swimming last night, knowing that on length 83 of my planned 100 that I would hit 100 miles. Reminded me of my first car, a 1968 Dodge Polara, when I rolled over the old school odometer over the 1,000,000 mile mark. I will hopefully be able to get a few more swims in before the school closes for the long holiday to pad my stats even more.

I ran this morning in Chicago with a temp of 3F. I was wearing boxer briefs and sweats. For the first time I remember, I froze my #### off. It was actually hurting. Not sure whether to invest in biker shorts or just knit a cover-up for the little soldier.

I basically shut it down for the winter. I really want to run in the cold, but i dont see it happening.

My plan is to do that after I start running again. However, that was assuming I'd start running again by tomorrow. If it still isn't right then I think this may be a good idea for this weekend as that would be > week without any activity. Don't want to go from 60 to zero and back to 40(?) again after that much rest. Good tip, thanks.

Awesome stuff. My swim stats this year are embarrassing, maybe 100k yards. Had too much fun on my bike.

That's f'n cool man! From a non-swimmer I can't get my head around swimming across a pool let alone 100 miles. Congratulations on the milestone!

Something else that will help both calf & ankle is those eccentric lifts I was doing while rehabbing my ankle. Lean against the wall, raise up with both feet onto your toes, then lower with just one foot. It strengthens the ankle but also works out the calf. Do them in sets of 20-25 or what ever you can do. add more fun instead of leaning against a wall lean against an exercise ball against a wall to make them a little more eccentric. No argument here. I'd fight back with a comment about not being even near the oldest here, but all of the old ##### are faster than me.

Despite what others around here will say, a treadmill isn't the worst thing in the world. (Especially compared to single digit temps!)

I got out for a few miles this morning in the Chicago area as well ...I saw a temp of -1F. I'd layered up, though. You could still do other routines to keep some leg strength and rotation ...squats, lunges, kettlebell swings, 'ups,' burpees, etc. ...all designed to keep good movement instead of only slogging out some slow, cold miles.

2Young - congrats on the swimming achievement! That's very cool. Some day you'll look back and think 'how did I do that?' But, you did!!!

Good god, I'm embarrassed. I did exactly what I said I didn't want to do when I first entered this thread almost 4yrs ago. All of my core strength is gone.

Days 1-3 are done for the planks. First 2 days were easy. Today I was shaking like a leaf on all 3 planks. There has to be cumulative fatigue. Going from 20 to 30sec shouldn't have been that much harder.

I failed Day 1 of the 100 pushups. I ate carpet on set 4 (only got 5 of 7 done).

Nowhere to go but up, I guess!

:bag: :bag:

I did get out for a 5 miler yesterday. 8:55/145. Much better than the past few weeks. I'll look to slowly ramp up the mileage in the coming weeks while mixing in the planks and pushups. Fun times.

That's not bad really.

Looking at mapmyride (only been keeping track there since May), I've only put in 77 miles in the pool this year. But that's since May when I started keeping track - I didn't spend much time in the pool before then.

Yeah, that's why I decided to do only the basic plank challenge and not all 3. I don't think I've done any core stuff in few years and nothing as hard as this will be as these times increase. (And this should be easier for me than most of you since I have less weight to hold up!) Maybe if I complete the 30 days, I'll try it again with all 3.

HR data 1 - Indoor recovery run on treadmill. (yesterday). 9 miles @ 7:30 pace. Average HR = 135. The effort feels comfortable as an easy/recovery run should, but I was surprised that my HR kept on going up after holding steady in the 124-129 range for the first 20-25 minutes. It crept up steadily throughout the run and ended up in the lower 140s by the last couple of miles. My HR for easy runs have usually been in the 120-125 range when I used to keep track / check a couple of years ago.

Suspicions that I wasn't fully recovered confirmed this morning when I had to pull the plug on my schedule MP run after less than 2 miles. I think I just have to accept the fact that I need to run easy for 7-10 days after a half-marathon before I am recovered enough to do a workout.

It'll come back.

Day 18 of plank, moved to 150 seconds. I sort of cheated, 150 front, 75 seconds each side. My side hurt too much yesterday to keep going higher with the side planks.

Also did 5 minutes of kettlebell. Been doing this every 3 days or so, but I had just lifted to parallel to the floor, shoulder height, 90°. Progressed from 122 to 177 during those 5 minutes. But today after reading up a bit, decided to go to overhead (arms just a little in front of the head, maybe 165°) could only do 30 at a time, made it to 111. those freakin' hurt.

2 miles on the track, 148bpm HR test - average 8:32 pace. Then 5, ended up being 9:04 pace.

F U! ;)

:bag: :bag:
Swimming, great for the core and stamina: http://www.active.com/swimming/articles/9-good-reasons-why-you-should-get-in-the-pool You meant real carpet, right?

Steve - Congrats on the overall victory.

Beer - Amazing run and especially enjoyable read. Way to hang in there and stay tough. Keep the Table Rock 50 in mind next year.

Have a buddy running that this weekend, I would like to give it a shot assuming I can stay healthy for more than a week

I was denied for Miwok 100K lottery today, so moving on to Plan C. There are two other 100Ks on the West Coast that are Western States qualifiers that don't have lotteries, but registration for those isn't for a few months. So I'll probably be in front of the computer at the stroke of midnight on NYE to put my name in for the Pine to Palm 100M up in Oregon, all in an effort to be sure I'm entered in at least one qualifier for the 2015 WS100.

Damn this growth of ultrarunning!

I did get into the Way Too Cool 50K via lottery, although it sounds like they pretty much let everybody in (1230 registrants or so). So at least I have something on the calendar to keep the training going!

Huge pain isn't it?

I'll be able to get into the Massennutten lottery the first week in January. After that it's up to PA for a 70 miler that is open right now. I'm sure that will get flooded with enteries after the Mass lottery.

There's a quality 50k in my backyard in February if you're looking for something to do. http://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=22742

Thanks. I've got Way Too Cool 50K on March 8th to keep me going for Spring. By then, I'll know if I've gotten into Pine to Palm 100M and/or Waldo 100K.
