This is the quote that I give our 7 year old, probably more than any other = "IF you think you can, or think you can't; you are right."
There's no denying that there's a large mental component to running, but at the same time, there's only so much your body can handle. You know what I mean?
Sure do! As I've gotten older, I know that unfortunately waaaay too well. You made the right choice, but it is our duty to bust your chops a bit. You'll be kicking ### and taking names again soon.

Damn right, I will. Thanks, GB.

OK, so just to clarify, there's no "official" distance for a sprint triathlon? It's not like a marathon where it's always 26.2 miles? (I feel like one of those people asking, "How long is that marathon?")

This weekend I'm going to head up to High Cliff and run the course for my portion of the Half IM relay. It's 95% trail running, but nothing too severe -- mostly wooded, chipped-bark trails, and pretty well compacted. Still, all the little turns will make it hard to run an even pace, and I'm not accustomed to avoid holes/roots, changing my stride to accomodate the trails, etc. I have no idea how my "normal" half marathon times will translate over into trail running. I've run on those trails once or twice before, but it's been a while, and I'm hoping I'll feel better after I refamiliarize myself.
Trying to catch up, so I haven't seen if this has been answered. My understanding is that anything under an Olympic (1500M Swim, 40K Bike & 10K Run) is referred to as a Sprint (I have even seen the Oly referred to as a Sprint). As for trails, if you can swing them, trial shoes make a huge difference IMO. Not just to keep you from slipping due to the different tread, but also in ankle support and a harder sole to keep rock from hurting the soles of the feet.

Ran the SoldierField10 on Satuday in 1:26:18. Not terrible for my first race in 2 years I suppose, but my course PR of 1:19:59 has been mocking me. Plus I really had to slow down for miles 8 & 9 and I didn't like that (my 1/2 split was 41:53). At least now I have a measuring stick and some motivation to focus in on my training from here on out.

Yesterday I got out for a 20 mile bike ride - mostly paved but I did the XTERRA trail as well in honor of my upcoming run with Tri-man. I really enjoy riding back there when I can. I wish I had the time to get out for a longer ride on the weekends like some of you get to do, but it's just not in the cards for me for now. Especially if I want to be doing longer runs through the summer: I'd like to stay married more than I'd like to run or bike!!

Yesterday I got the FIRST program back out and started trying to decide what program I'm going to follow (1/2 training or full marathon program) and what my target end-date will be. I also need to do a 5k pace run to really see what pace I should focus on for the training. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow morning if it isn't raining. I'm tempted to go with the marathon program and figure out a good target race in/around October (I wish Chicago didn't fill up so bleedin' early!!).

At least I'm officially back on the horse now.

Wow. I'd swear I must have typed that. That sums up some of my frustration right now as well.

I had an interesting morning. I went across the street to take a swim in our HOA pool (only 15 meters long), and took the advice of one of my neighbors to make sure to check the filters for snakes prior to swimming. I checked them all, and no snakes (some bugs though). I then put my feet in the water to prep for trying to get myself in the cool water early in the morning (getting past that specific point of no return). While putting my goggles on, an approximate 18 inch snake started swimming right at me  I quickly got my feet out of the water, got the long-sticked net, and netted myself the snake. I then put the net on the cement, and beat the bejesus out of the said snake with my swim-fins. With my HR up just a bit, I then proceeded to check the entire pool out, prior to getting my swim in. Fun, fun, fun!

hardly any water snakes in texas are poisonous. You should have tried to race it.

OK fellas I may be in over my head this weekend. The 7 day forcast for Minneapolis is "Chance of Thunderstorms, high of 80" I have yet to run in the rain. I have done 95% of my runs outdoors since the roads cleared of snow, but I have never had to run in the rain. By no means will I not run because of a little rain, but I would like to know if there is anything I need to know about running in the rain. What extra precautions do I need to make or other things to keep in mind if it is raining for 13 miles.

I am sure most of you have had to go through this at some point. Any good advise out there?

You're probably going to get wet.

Bodyglide and/or nipple tape is even more important in the rain. Otherwise, I don't know that there's much to worry about. I did a half in a constant rain last year, and it was no big deal. The bigger worry is having the race interrupted by lightning.

The lightning would suck. I will gladly HTFU if it is just rain, but it will be pretty annoying if the race gets shut down because of lightning. I would feel really bad for my wife and the other couple that are running this as their first half marathon. They have all trained pretty hard for this and all 3 of these people told me last year after I ran my first half that they could never run for 13 miles. I may also have to leave the ipod home for this race. I do not mind running without it, but it would be nice to have.

If you're fast enough you can dodge the drops. In lieu of that, tuck in behind Gruecd and use him as a shield.

But unfortunately these are. It could have been a baby one = I wasn't taking any chances!

yeah, see - that's the key part of your response. Reason #87 that I live in Chicago: Zero poisonous snakes.

That's actually a very solid list of recommendations.

As stated in gruecd's link, try to stay warm and dry pre-race. Wear sweats or go the trashbag route. During the race, unless it's pouring, I personally wouldn't worry about it. I ran the Dublin Marathon in 2005, and it rained lightly pre-race and then over the first three miles. There was spotty rain over the next ten miles, and then the last 13 were dry. I hadn't trained for rain (I trained in 100+ temps in dry Phoenix lol), nor for the cool ~40degree temps either, but I loved it.If it is raining, avoid ("do or do not, there is no try") the puddles, as you don't know how deep that pothole is. A sprained ankle will ruin your whole day. Also, you don't want to soak your shoes and socks. Why lug all that extra weight? If you have a cheering section, perhaps have them carry an extra pair of socks for you. If you're using Bodyglide, have them carry that as well. I understand that Vaseline sweats off easily (which is why you should use Bodyglide), so it would wash off even easier in the rain. If chafing is a problem for you, and you're on your own for the race, make note of the medical tents, they should have Vaseline available for re-application. It's better than nothing.

I just checked weather.com, and it's calling for "isolated" t-storms and 84/59. That might be a little warm for a marathon, but a half should be ok. This may be my first Spring here in the cities, but I haven't seen rain forecasts worth a crap here yet. There's probably more of a chance that it'll snow than rain, so don't fret about it. lol

If you need a cheering section, drop me a PM. Maybe getting back to the crowds and the race smells (eeewww!!! ) will get me back on the horse. lol

Good luck!

ETA: there will be a psychic on the radio on Friday, so maybe I can finally find my watch!! lol

Excluding the politicians...

I've been ramping up my training efforts for the Detroit Marathon (Although still far away) in October. My focus is trying to get out 4-6 times a week with mostly 3-6 milers through the week and then supplimenting with longer runs on Saturdays. The other thing has been cross training with spin class. So, last night I did a speedy (For me) 3 miler, followed up with an hour spin class.

I'm loving the weather right now. I wish it would stay like this all year.

I might look into this spin class thing for my XT days. Do I need any special gear (like cycling shorts or anything)?

It's a nice workout, helps build leg strength and I find the interval training especially helpful. It's almost like doing fartleks (SP?).The clipped shoes are a good idea, I found a relatively cheap pair which make a big difference from just placing your feet in the baskets they provide. Clipping in really helps on the climbs. I don't use the shorts, your donkey will be sore the first few times you go, but it will adjust.

A pair of padded tri-shorts should help the donkey issue. I got a really nice, cheap pair from this eBay seller for under $15. They do not have any listed right now, but you might want to check back. Plus, if you ever get in the pool, and maybe even do a tri, you'll already be outfitted.

OK, did my 5k this morning - 24 minutes flat (7:43/mile). Now I just need to decide which program to follow for the summer and I'll be good to go.

A few random notes and thoughts....

SAT: 48 miler. Notice that in a 22-23 mph paceline my heart rate was around 95 and when I was pulling it would jump to 125. Pretty much came to the conclusion that group rides are turning into junk miles and I'd get better fitness walking than sitting in a pace line. Followed that up in the afternoon with a preview of the 17 mile course I'll be riding in the upcoming co-ed tri relay in 3 weeks. Maybe the flatest course I've ever seen. Worse part will be taking speed bumps at 25+ mph.

Monday: One hour of track work at the velodrome I'll be racing at this Friday. Hit 34 mph on my sprints, but I'm having trouble holding the corners. It's also taking me 200 meters to get up to top speed from 25 mph which isn't good May get the opportunity to mix it up with some pro/cat 1s so it will be interesting to see how fast they drop me.

Tuesday: Indoor bike threshold workout. Six 2 min intervals with 1 min recovery @ 320/320/340/340/360/360 watts. Three 5 min intervals ramping up from 240 to 320 watts.

Wednesday: Weighed in at 213 this morning down 5 lbs in the last week. 3 mile warm up at 9 min pace, 5 x 1050 intervals at 7:45 pace, 1.5 cool down. Weighed in at 208 afterwards. Would love to be sub-205 for the Blood, Sweet, and Gears ride at the end of June.

Lastly, I 80% confident that I'll attempt the 565 miles up the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline drive starting the day after the BSG ride. Still 20% not sure if I want to ride for 600+ miles in a week timeframe with climbs to 6000+ ft.

You guys ever see those "Running is Cheaper Than Therapy" t-shirts?

Well, that's definitely the case for me right now. I don't know why I feel compelled to share this, but the wife and I have been having problems for the last 8 months or so, and we just decided to go ahead with a 6-month trial separation. It sucks, but it is what it is, and hopefully this will help give us some clarity (one way or the other) as to what we need to do going forward. What I do know is that my running has been instrumental in helping me get through this. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have that outlet.

Anyway, the rain is supposed to clear up this afternoon, and I'm looking forward to an easy 8- to 10-miler this afternoon under sunny skies. It's supposed to be pushing 70 degrees, so I might even go McConaughey style. If only I could find a way to get his girlfriend....

Updated my race schedule to add a couple of local 10Ks the next couple of weeks. The Bellin Run on June 13 is the fourth largest timed 10K race in the nation. Tri-man, you should come up and run; it'll be a nice dress rehearsal for your Half IM! Also added NYC; I got a free entry from my contact at ING, so I figured, what the hell?! It's only three weeks after Chicago, so I definitely won't be racing it, but it'll be nice just to say that I've done it.

Finally, a nice article I saw this morning on Active.com: 10 Tips to Race Tough.

It's good to share this. You'll feel better talking to others about what you are feeling and going through. Again, sorry to hear you are going through this GB. I've been there and it's certainly not easy. The running will absolutely help you deal with some of the negative sides of the separation. Get your friends and family around you for support and use the running as an outlet for the angst.

Incredible training BnB! If you get down to 200'ish, you are going to be a serious machine!!!
Has anyone tried the new Gu Chomps yet? Supposed to be Gu's version of the clif shot blocks.

:goodposting: Hang in there Gruecd. As Kanye says, That, That, That, That, That that don't kill you...

Did a little over 6 miles this morning - 1 easy (9:00), 2 at 8:16, 1 easy (9:07), 2 at 8:10. My first official "FIRST" run.

Quads are letting me hear it after 3 "hard" runs in 6 days (+ 20 mile bike). Feels great!!

By the way, Furley, I know you're still lurking around here. You and that fancy new stride of yours going to waddle your way over to the Bellin and improve on that 1:13 from last year? How about you, Keggers? It's right in your backyard!

I ran my last miles before my race this morning. The forcast is starting to look better for Sunday morning. I guess the storms are not supposed to roll in until late afternoon/night. I am really excited to run this race. I feel better prepaired than last year, and being able to do this with my wife and 2 close friends should make the whole experience better.

I have decided that I am going to start with the 3:40 pace group and use that group to get me to the turn around. I believe the turn around is around 8 miles and I think that will put me in good shape to hit my goal.

Thanks, guys. I'll be fine. Just sucks having to go through this crap.
You've dropped some pretty heavy hints here lately that things weren't quite right at home, glad you got it out and let me know if I can help. I have been doing the marriage thing (18+ years) a lot longer than the running thing and may have some good or at least different advice. PM if needed!

after 3 "hard" runs in 6 days
Reminds me of the Cubs offensive output.
Actually they scored 5 in their 6 losses to StL and SD. Keep your facts straight. Who do you root for, BnB? You've had a lot of fun at the Cubs (and my) expense but I don't even know what grassy knoll you're shooting from.
Used to be a diehard Cubs fan in the 70's. Watched every afternoon game during the summer and went to a handful event year. Kingman, Monday, Kessinger, Swisher era when the Phillies would come in a post 20 spots. Parents were STL fans. We moved back to STL and I remained a fan for several years until they traded my favorite played to STL. As a kid that throw a split finger fastball, you know who I'm refering to. I was devastated and wrote off the Cubs forever as dead to me. This would be like Bears trading Walter. With Sutter in STL and getting access to bucu tickets for free plus Ozzie Smith coming to town, I became a Cards fan. I followed baseball so closely that when I moved to VA after college, I'd go listen to KMOX after dark out in the car to keep up with the Cards. Then baseball decided they didn't need a World Series one year and I decided that I no longer needed baseball in my life. Haven't watched a full game since or even a full inning of a regular season game, occasionally check the standings out of boredom. Living in NC now, this is football and college basketball country.
