Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

In other news, this may be the first race ever where I didn't look like a total dork in pictures. And no, I'm not the girl in blue that got in there by mistake. They also evidently missed my water exit - guess I was too fast for 'em.
Bike picture is cool. And that's before you look closely and see that you're giving Tri-Man the finger with your right hand. Did you know the photographer was there, or were you just flipping him off for the duration of the tri?
I knew he was there - got caught halfway to grabbing the bottle. And then since I was stuck in the middle I had the time and flipped Tri-man off.

Training for this week:

Tuesday I had planned for an 8/2 mini-brick. At the turn around of the ride I turned one street too soon, so it came out to 7.89. After walking my bike back to my garage I put everything on for the run. I walked down the driveway and my legs starting quivering, so I figured that sitting may be my best option. I did do the ride in 30:04 so it wasn't all bad.

Today, instead of waiting until 6pm and cooler temps, I went out for a 3 mile run/walk at 4pm in 94 degrees. I ran for 3 minutes and walked for one until the last run, I ran the last 3:50 of the run. I managed to average 10:34 for the whole course, with the last 5 run sections coming in under 10 and a best of 9:14.

I feel better than I have in months right now and I know it will just get better as I take more weight off.

I am taking donations so that I can finally get rid of all the extra skin if anyone feels the urge to donate 5 or 6 thousand dollars.

...why am I thinking about doing the half iron man at Cedar Point next year? WHY WHY WHY!!! :lmao: :wall:
because they're freaking awesome?
This! Although, I'd do Tawas instead. Same weekend, less $, great venue AND I'll be there doing something, likely the HIM too.
I was thinking about doing the Tawas short distance this year. The wifes grandparents live in that area so we were going to crash with them for the weekend but as it turns out my nephews birthday is Sunday and the grandparents are coming down for that.
DO IT. I did the sprint the 1st year & the Oly last year. The swim is the best in the state IMO and the bike course is very good too. I just got an email yesterday on the post race party and it sounds like it is going to be awesome. I'll be dancing with dirt that weekend, but fully intend to return in 2011.
Can't :( maybe next year

Hey, guys. Got into town a little early and was able to get out for a nice, relaxed 10-mile run around Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet. So many great places to run here in Minneapolis. :lmao:

Out for a few drinks tonight, then up and at 'em by 5:30 to catch the team van down to Winona to start the relay. I'll be kicking off leg #1 at 11 AM.

Hope you all have a great weekend!!

Good luck!!_________________________________________Dead legs suck. Had a 3mi run on the schedule today and could feel every inch of yesterday's 5K. Legs were heavy and just no pop in them. I was so tired I could feel my body 'sink' into my stride, if that makes any sense. I managed through the 3miles at the prescribed 8:45 pace, but it took a lot more out of me than it should've.I had a cool moment when I came back in from the run. As I come in the door, I see my soon to be 4yr old (tomorrow actually) zip past me. He's doing laps in the house wearing my bib from last night's 5K. I ask him what he's doing and he says as he's passing by 'running a race with my friends..... DUHHHHH!'. I suddenly forgot how crummy I felt.

Yeah - my 5 year old has taken to popping out of this saddle on his bike. He says he's racing. You have to see it in person - but it is hysterical.

Double awesome stuff. My kids - especially my 5 year old - love to race. Random sprints, first upstairs, running the bases: You name it, they want to race it.

Just as a small gift. This is the most important survey I have ever seen in athletics. It is a must-read.

I vote 12.
Pretty good list, and I have always been partial to Anna.

And while I think the girls are hot I am saying  on a billiards player or a poker player being athletes.

My youngest (2.5) always tries to put on my running gear when I have it laying around. He puts on headphones, ipod band, watch, roadid, and HRM (I am a running electronics store when I am out there) and takes a trot around the island. He loves it. Then he makes me put it on and do the same thing. He gets the biggest kick of asking if I am going running all the time. My oldes 4.5 just wants to go out and run with me, but I race him anytime I can. Up and down the street.-------------------Update for me. I just have not felt it this week. I am not sure what has happened. Yesteray I was going to do 5 in the morning and then 9 with 6 x 800s last night. I did the 5 in the morning, but when I went to do the intervals, I just could not do them. I had nothing and it was hot out so the air I was sucking was hot as balls. Did nothing for me. So I just ended up getting in 6 miles in and calling it a night. I think I have been lacking sleep this week and it has hurt me considerably. Oh well, it happens, now I need to get my miles in this weekend and finish up strong.Good luck Grue on the relay. Should be a blast.

Just reading this thread has given me a lot of motivation to really push myself.

I had been running 3 miles (3 times a week) to basically stay in some kind of shape and lose some weight. I thought about challenging myself to a 10k, but I never really did anything about it.

After a couple of weeks of really pushing myself I ran 6 miles today and lived to tell about it. The time was not earth shattering (55:00), but my goal was just to complete 6 miles. Now that I know I can do it, I can focus on the time.

Thank you all for the motivation and the tips I have picked up in this thread.

:( Soooooo hot! Want to touch the hiney! Arrroooooooo!

Did nothing today since tomorrow is my first 20 miler of the season. Hoping to be out at 5:30am again to try & beat some of the heat (tho the humidity ain't looking so good).

Good luck to Grue (who should be starting in 30 minutes or so!) and anyone else who is racing, training, or drafting!!

:stirspot: I love hearing this stuff! I also love hearing of how the kids appreciate their dad's efforts and mimic them. And remember, that just keeps getting better, guys! Witness 2Young's daughter getting active in tri's (and cross country this fall, I hear). Liquors' girls have done real little mini-tri's also. So cool to bond with your kids in that way.

---

4 mile run today, but did it all on uneven parkways, not sidewalk or a track ...getting acclimated to different terrain for the upcoming relay race. Last two miles at a 7:45/mi pace.

:excited: That's awesome. -----On my end I have been deliberately trying to run more these last weeks. Last night did 2500 in the pool and then went out for a 5 mile run. Got 4 done and called it good. 80 degrees and 100% humidity. Totally wiped. Going to try to get 5-6 done today. 50 mile ride and 2500yd swim tomorrow. 11 mile run Sunday morning.Oh, and Ned - you're my new bestest friend. I had seen some images of her I hadn't seen many of those. Stunning.

A colleague figured out my foot problem! I told her what the pain was, and what I'd done the day before (hard swim), and she immediately said it was probably from pushing off the wall! = I'm pretty certain I as pushing off much harder than normal, as it was my first longer swim where I really focused on time. The foot feels better today, but I'll skip my scheduled swim today and will take it easy today. Tomorrow will be a long bike ride and short swim, followed by a brick (25/4) on Sunday.

My 3 yo used to do "triathlons" after looking at my framed tri pics- especially the crossing the IM finish line one. I start him out on an area rug, which is the transition area- he lays on his stomache and wiggles to someplace I call out and then back to T1, where he hops on his imaginary bike (putting on his imaginary helmet first) and highsteps it the hell out of there (after walking the "bike" out of T1. I send him around the apartment and then back to T2 when he looks like he's getting tired doing the high-step bike "riding" (running). Then it's getting off the imaginary bike, taking off the imaginary helmet and putting on the imagiary running shoes for the marathon, which involves doing loops around tables and hopping over the sofa and things.... it's a small apartment. THe payoff, of course, is crossing the tape at the finish line (my wife's cloth measuring tape). He hasn't wanted to even try the tricycle we got him over a year ago. And swimming has been slow- but our post-fire temp home for the next two months has a swimming pool, so I"ve been trying to get him in there as much as possible. ANy tips for getting him to release the death grip on dad and do a little swimming himself? he's refused water-wings/vests/etc and I don't want to push him- he's like his mom and dad and bucks against getting pressured into anything.

tri-man -- You're absolutely right about 5K training being intense and rewarding, just in a different way than distance training. A few years ago I spent 6-8 weeks specifically training for a 5K for something different to do, and it was definitely worthwhile, leading to my current PR (22:10). I've never been fast, and I've always been injury-prone, so distance running is really more my thing. I don't think there's any way I could ever crack a 20 minute 5K, no matter how much I trained for it. I don't want to say I've run my last set of 400s, but I haven't done a single 5K all year and I really don't miss that particular distance. Kudos to those who do, though.

Darrinll40 -- Good job. :lmao:

gruecd -- GL!

Flying Turtle -- Awesome. Once you get to where you can run 6 miles continuously, you're at a point where it gets relatively easier and easier to build up mileage if you choose to do so. Adding 2 miles onto a 4 mile long run is a 50% increase, but it's only a 33% increase if you're already at 6. Not that you need to increase your mileage if you don't want to, of course. The key thing now is to find a local 10K. :lmao:

_______________________________

Did 5 easy miles this morning with Mrs. K. I had done yesterday's 5-miler faster than usual (8:10 instead of 8:30) because it was nice and cool yesterday morning, whereas today was hot and sticky and I needed some rest. I'm definitely at the point where it's getter really hard to motivate myself to get out there on some of these "maintenance" runs. That includes the 12-miler I did earlier in the week. It's going to be nice when my marathon is over and I can just go back to my normal off-season schedule.

This week was a rest week. Next week is the second of three key weeks, capped by a 22-miler. I'm really hoping I can catch good weather for this one.

Quit at 2 people... just quit at 2.
That be true - no reason to go on to see the "top spot". The rest are pretty spectacular, though!
:lmao: It would have been less disturbing if the author had put Matt Leinart at #1. :X
Matt is pretty dreamy.

:goodposting: starting school sucks. I haven't had the time to do any good workouts, as I'm lucky to get a half hour or so in at a time now. We start at 8 each morning and I've never been good at working out at lunch or after work. I'd get up earlier, but lately my wife has been keeping me up until midnight (not that I'm complaining about that). I'll figure this out, it's just been one week.

Did 27 miles under 90 minutes on the bike this morning, good hills and it felt great to be out.

As I'll be losing access to my pool Labor Day, I'm probably going to start strength training 2x a week, run 3x and bike on Saturdays, might bike a couple times a week to work if the schedule allows - cycling home at rush hour could be hazardous to my health.

I need your opinion here. I have been looking at fall races and signing up. I have one race that is free registration to anyone turning in $50 in tax deductible donations.

link http://www.runnroll.org/

Proceeds go to adaptive athletics at UA. What are your thoughts on putting this down at the conference table at work or soliciting face book friends? Will I come across as a jerk? I am truly looking for the free entry here. I have four to five races I want to hit this fall and the cheaper the better for me.

Picked up the wife's new spinning bike Thursday, rode it hard last night (the bike), and just got back from an untimed run with her. Her version of a run includes walking and bathroom breaks while she's getting back into distance shape, and I try to run while she's doing that, so I probably went closer to seven while she run/walked six. Time for coffee and some kind of breakfast food.

It seems like that'd be OK, though admittedly you're doing it for the rather selfish reason of saving yourself the entry fee. But you could put it out at work with a note, asking folks to sponsor you for the race. They'd probably want to know a bit more about your running, and that's a good thing - office bonding, and it puts your running commitment more in the public spotlight. But recognize you won't be able to dip into this sponsor-my-cause thing too often.Looks like I'll be in Phoenix next February (10-13) as part of the doctoral program I'm starting up soon. Maybe we can catch a run!

93 degrees out but I did 6.68 miles. I took a little different route for new scenery and it added almost 1/2 mile to my long run. I did have a better time then last time so that is good. Still to much walking though.

Hey, guys. Back from the relay. I need to get some sleep (4 hours total since Thursday morning at 6:30), but here's how I did on my three legs:

FRI, 11 AM: 7.96 miles in 59:13 (7:27/mile)

FRI, 8:48 PM: 6.34 miles in 45:21 (7:09)

SAT, 5:49 AM: 3.19 miles in 21:18 (6:40)

Details to follow. Hope everyone is doing well.

Oh, yeah. Also got flashed by a spectator along the course at 2 AM. :lmao:

:lmao: ________________________________________________________________I know it's been said a million times over, but this heat/humidity can't leave soon enough. I did 3.2 today and felt like I needed gills to breathe. I managed to keep it at the prescribed pace again (8:42), but I was wiped out at the end. More wiped then I should've been, I think. :kicksrock:

I've been enjoying the relative cool here in the Northeast. I have another longest run ever coming up tomorrow - 15 miles. I'm actually looking forward to it!

Any tips for dealing with calf cramps? I've been trying to keep myself on a set weekly mileage pace....I had a big (for me, anyway) weekend planned in terms of mileage, and last night I woke up around 5 AM with a violent leg cramp. I figure it was just dehydration (too much beer  ), but it was really painful. Got out of bed this morning and I could barely walk, so I stretched a lot and it's gotten better as the day went on. I even went for a run, albeit shorter than I'd hoped, and it was just fine once I got going. I stretched after the run as well, but as I sit here, it's just getting tighter again.

How does this work? Anyone have this happen? What am I in for?

:goodposting: These runs are always good times.

wide right -- I don't know what to tell you about the calf cramps. I've had them before, but only after very long runs and even then they go away for good pretty quickly once I've had the chance to rehydrate. I've never had them drag on like that. What you're describing for today sounds more like stiffness than a cramp.

I didn't notice it while I was running today, but boy do I now. Hello Chaffing!

Is there a solution other than lubin' up the thighs?

It's stiffness now, but it was caused by a middle-of-the-night cramp. I just didn't know if anyone had experienced one of these...I don't think I've EVER had a calf cramp, but it was really painful and I've never had a cramp before that had long-lasting effects like this.

Middle of the night? They're always a hydration/eletrolyte issue for me, which I can counteract by hydrating and taking electrolytes. :hophead: I used to get calf cramps all the time when I was younger and ignorant and playing soccer 24/7.

Are you losing Precious Bodily Fluids at some point during the night [/GeneralRipper]?

Decided to stretch the loop out today... actually meant to do it yesterday and have a recovery run today, but life keeps kicking my family while we're down. The wife got a herniated disc on Tuesday and has been next to immobile. As a result, she also can't sleep, so I end up getting woken up, our cats end up getting woken up, and then our son ends up getting woken up. So no sleep. Of course, this is also the week(s) our baby-sitters are all on vacation. Meanwhile, our 3yo son- who has been doing ok in most ways post-fire- has been highly irregular with his bowels. Gotten to a point where he's been screaming in pain even while peeing. Had to take him on an emergency trip to the doc. Basically, a big PTTS week for running (only ran on Tues) where I had to tcb at home and make sure I was able to grab sleep when I could (and not wake up at 6 for a couple of my morning runs). [/whine]

Like I was saying- stretched what has been my normal 4 mile loop into a little less than 6, running up to and across the bottom of the reservoir in Central Park. Felt great. Humid, but not so baking hot- and a few drizzles to keep things "cool".
