Ran a 10k in June (1 Viewer)

The biggie this year is a 10 legs survival tri where I have to cross 3 lakes, swimming with my run gear in my tri suit, only transitions are for the 2 bike legs. 42 total miles, with almost 14 running, 1.4 miles of swimming and the rest on the bike.
Survival of the Shawangunks? I'm sooooo jealous if so. It is on my "man I wish I could do that" list.
Nope, but its an SOS qualifier (that I have no prayer qualifying for). I am doing The Battle of Waterloo. I have talked to dozens of folks that have done it and everyone pretty much says "it kicked my ###, but it was the most fun event I have done, EVER".

IRONMAN COMES TO NYC!!!!!I really wish I was even remotely close to being fit enough/having enough time to sign up for this tomorrow. Is anybody diving in? An all down-stream swim should make for fast/easy times.
All kinds of things come to mind here - toxic waste and dead bodies in the Hudson, dodging bullets in NJ, etc. :P Of the new IMs, I'd be much more interested in IM Mont Tremblant, to be honest. (Or even better would be St. George, IMO, though it isn't a new sparkly one). I have no interest in IMs, though.
Having raced in the shadow of Downtown Detroit (including swimming in the Detroit River) this past weekend, I get it. There is nothing like getting to race a big event in YOUR city. The Detroit Marathon & 1/2 Marathon crosses over the bridge to Canada and returns to the USA under the Detroit River. First time I did that one I got chills thinking how amazing it was to be racing through the streets, and over and under these amazing structures I traveled my whole life.

btw- it looks like the only "real" NYC part of this is the end of the run, which finishes in Riverside Park, along the Hudson right about where the NYC Olympic Tri starts. It doesn't seem to do much, if any, running on the streets. Most of this is done along the Palisades Park in NJ, just across the George Washington Bridge from the city. That's an area NYC cyclists know FAR too well (although I think the bike route goes along the Palisades Parkway and not 9W). The run should be really nice- one of my favorite workout areas just under the bridge along the Hudson before heading up and over the GW into Manhattan. Teh swim.. ... I've swum the Hudson a few times- but in the NYC Tri which goes to the 79th St Boat Basin (and by a lot of anchored boats where I imagined them ####ting and pissing furiously before pumping everything out into the course while I raced). I figure the area under the Bridge is a little... cleaner. But for no good reason really. Even though they say it's clean, it still gives me the creeps.

IRONMAN COMES TO NYC!!!!!
Yeah. For $895.I think this exchange summed it up pretty well:

Not that I'm even considering doing it, but I figure this is the correct place to put this...the first Ironman in and around NYC will be next year. Registration begins June 15 and according to Bloomberg it will probably cost $1000. Oh its also in August, so figure 90+ degree weather with significant humidity.
If you send me $750, I'll kick you in the nuts. You'll come out $250 ahead in this scenario.

Finally managed to run on back-to-back weekdays for the first time in I don't even know how long. 5 yesterday and 4 today. Going to stagger through a 10-mile race this weekend, and then hopefully really get back into the swing of things. Take the next two months to build a base, and then go all-out preparing for a marathon in December.

:lmao: :lmao:I didn't notice the August date. nice.

5 mile steady state run yesterday followed by a great 7 mile Fartlek run today. I'm feelin' it these days.

I  my wife. She's pushing to do another 5K this Sunday. Who am I to turn that down?

I concur. Mont Tremblant looks MUCH better than NYC, especially considering only about 1% of the race is actually in NYC. They should call the race IM New Jersey. Plus, the race is exceptionally cost-prohibitive. General entry slots for $900 is ridiculous. You can do 3 Rev3 events for LESS than that, total.

Current temp 107

I am going to wait for sunset when it is only 99 out and try to do eight miles. The thing I dont like about that is that sunset is around 7:30 at night and it gets dark fast out here. Oh well it is time to HTFU. I had a good time laughing at you guys in zero degrees when it was perfect here. it is my turn to suffer.

It has dropped to 105 and feels like 99. I am going for it. I cant wait any longer.

I failed this. A little after 5 miles I turned around and pretty much walked home. I was feeling really discouraged when I turned around. I cant remember I the last time I failed this badly. I am hoping the heat makes up for the fail. Shouldn't 5 miles in over 100 degrees give me the benefit of 10 miles in normal temps?

Man don't discount how much that extreme heat affects you. Be extremely careful.

You might try some interval work so that your body has a chance to cool down a bit between sets. Warm up a bit (in a running sense), then maybe do some half-miles at a brisk pace with a couple minute walk in between each. The slightly faster pacing will be good training, and overall it will be a good blend of some endurance and pacing. But it also allows your body temp to regulate a bit in that extreme heat.

My legs were sore from yesterday's 7mi Fartlek, so I was fully expecting to lumber along on today's run. But that was almost too easy. I really feel like I'm having a break through here. I did a 5mi recovery run today over lunch. A recovery run is the last run I'd expect to see some sort of break through occur, but the numbers don't lie. My usual recovery run is around a 10:00 pace with average HR around 145-148 range which is 75-76% of Max HR (coincidentally, Pfitz prescribes <76%). Today's run was a 9:49 pace with avg HR of 137 (71%) and maxed at 153. That's a pretty significant difference.

The other thing that has me geeked is I'm doing this at 79 degrees and 44% humidity. That's not terrible conditions, but it's far from the ideal conditions I was running in back in Feb/March. I'd love to know what I can do in a crisp 40 degree day right now.

I don't know if anyone is racing this weekend, but just in case, I wanted to do a quick drive-by to say "good luck" before I head out of town for the weekend. I'm running Grandma's Marathon on Saturday with a friend who's turning 30 on Monday; we're running 3.8 miles beforehand and then running the marathon as a long training run, thus "30 for 30." We'll probably be running around 9:00 pace, stopping to drink with the college kids, etc., so it will almost definitely be slower than any of the 14 previous marathons that I've run; as a result, I'm hoping that I'll be in tip-top shape for plenty of :banned: afterwards.

Thought I was gonna get caught in the rain last night for my 10-miler, but it stopped just before I headed out, and it started again almost immediately afterwards, so I timed it perfectly. SRD today, and I've got a pretty slow day at work, so I'll probably try to sneak out a little early. I'm already packed, so I think I'm gonna head out tonight with a buddy of mine to see my favorite local band play, and then we'll be hitting the road tomorrow morning at 6 AM to head north.

Hope you all have a great weekend, and I'll see you guys next week!

Have fun, gruecd. I don't know if 3.8 miles is enough of a warm-up for a marathon, so go easy and try not to pull/sprain anything. ;)
 A marathon fun run. :loco: Have fun!
Finally an impressive training run from Gru. Most of his runs don't stack up to ours time wise. These guys that do Boston in just over 2 hours...meh...they should run another 2-3 hours and really see what a long run is like.

Have fun dude...is this your 1st "ultra"?By the way, if I were in your shoes and had your ability, I'd take off at the start at a 5 min/mi pace just to mess with the lead dogs.

Thanks for the advice. Last night I did start the brisk walk thing when ever my HR got in the high 170s. I would then run again when it hit low 160s. It was just to hot though. I am supposed to do a slow recovery 4 miles tomorrow and I am seriously thinking about using the gym tread mill for it. I will then do my long run early Sat morning.

Wed - 13-15 mi mtb ride with my son on the greenway trails, college campus, and local neighborhoods. I was nice doing an easy ride w/o a computer on board. Only downside was that the lil' #### wanted to do some sprints up the hills and he can motor for short distances.

Thur - 6.2 mile progression run.Did last last 2/10's at Gru's marathon pace. Can I imagine doing this for another 26 miles

Fri - Haven't downloaded that data yet, but smoked my 53 mi bike ride this morning. 20.6 mph average and my hr was in zone 1 or lower a majority of the ride. Coming off a 20 mi run on Tue has me thinking that I'm seeing some training gains. This should be my last 50+ miler before the Blood, Sweat, and Gears 103 miler next Saturday.

Tomorrow the big 22 mi mountain training run is staring at me on the calender. Will be running this on the Blue Ridge Parkay. 7-8 miles of up and down before the Mt. Pisgah 14 mile, 3100-3500 ft ascent starts. :X

Progress - ran a third straight day yesterday for the first time in at least a couple of months, and felt good during and after.

Have my 10-mile "race" tomorrow. Going to be a slog since I'm out of shape. I was going to shoot for 9-minute miles, but because I registered for this race back when I was running regularly, it turns out I'm starting in the first wave, based on the projected time I wrote down. The minimum time for inclusion in the first wave is 8:30 per mile, so that's now my goal.

Did 5 yesterday at 8:21/mile and felt reasonably comfortable; pretty sure 8:30 for 10 miles will be a stretch, but it's something to shoot for.

Damn, dude. A 22 miler 4 days after a 20? That's..... ambitious.

7:30. Shouldn't be too bad. Good news is that the first 2 miles are down hill. Bad news is that you run back up those 2 miles at the end. Best news is that there are tickets for two free beers on my bib - looking forward to pounding two cold ones at 9 a.m. tomorrow and then getting on with my day.Just glad to be getting back out there. I usually run in the morning, but yesterday I planned to run after work. It was encouraging to me that by about lunchtime, I was itching to be out there running. Not really sure where I lost my running mojo in recent months, but I am determined to bring it back.

Yikes! Brew is one tough dude.

Took a couple of days off after the tri, but finally got out tonight and ran about 6 miles in about 9 minute miles.
Got a half mile swim in before work Thursday, followed by another 6 mile run last night. I need to do a long (12 - 14 mile) run tomorrow. The marathon training guide I'm using says I should be at 14 but I may have to modify that a bit, we'll see how it goes.

Anyone try the Asics Hydrology socks before?
Nope! What's the story behind 'em?
I don't know if there's much a story behind them but I was looking on ****'s Sporting Goods website for running socks because I have had blister problems with cotton socks. Just curious if anyone used this kind.I'd take suggestions on other ones that are avaible at ****'s or Sports Authority.
I have a bunch of these. Wear 'em running and biking all the time. Good socks.

No wonder the ride today felt good...

1-20: 19.8 mph, 253 watts, 80 rpm, 134 hr

20-40: 21.2 mph, 260 watts, 76 rpm, 134 hr

40-53: 21.1 mph, 246 watts, 75 rpm, 135 hr

Basically a long recovery ride based on HR. Pretty sure the running is building bike base. I'm bleeding off bad a higher efforts, but that's likely becuase the running is zone 1-2 efforts. Once I get thru my events, I'll do some interval work to improve that soft spot.

Tried something new today in preparation for the survival tri. Ran to the pool, swam and ran back. Interesting results. Averaged 8:08 MM for the 2.4 miles there. I goofed up the 310XT getting in the water, so I don't know what I swam the 1,500 in, but I was surprised how easy it was to breathe going right from the run. I treated it like a race and got my stuff off quick and got in the water and went to swimming. If anyone was looking, I had to look like a compete dork. I did not notice any effects from the run and swam strong. Only ill effect was some foot cramping, but that mat have been from a busy workout week and not directly tied to the run there. At 1,500, I got out, tossed on my stiff quick and ran back (looking like an even bigger dork leaving the pool soaking wet. Different story on the 2nd run as my legs felt real heavy. While I really wasn't trying to push things, I could only average 8:49 MM for the 2.4 mile run back. Lots to work on before now and August to get used to running after swimming.

Anyone racing this weekend?

Big Fish Tri SundayI've decided I don't care what people think. I'm sure I looked foolish to everyone at stony creek when I was putting on my wetsuit to swim. So what you did wouldn't even phase me these days.

I forgot you mentioned you are doing this one. You are off to a great start this season, go kill this one!

4 mile recovery run done indoors on the treadmill. I hate the treadmill but it was better then running in high winds at 104 out today. :ptts:

Anyone racing this weekend?
:hey: Just got back from a local 10K. This is a very small event, and I would guess there were 60-70 entrants, 10-15 of which were area high school and college runners. Temp was about 70 with mild winds, so conditions were about as good as you could reasonably expect for mid-June. Finished in 48:40, which is "only" 45 seconds off my PR. Obviously 45 seconds is a non-trivial amount of time in a race of this distance, but I'll take it. As much as I don't like 10Ks, I really need to find one in the fall or spring -- when the weather figures to be very good -- and really train for it. There's absolutely no reason why I can't knock at least a minute or two off today's time, seeing as how I'm not currently in anything close to mid-distance racing shape. Anyway, now that I'm starting to feel recovered from Fargo, I need to figure out what's next on the horizon. I'm starting to setting on the idea of targeting the Sioux Falls half-marathon in September as my next "A" race. My 1:48:xx HM PR isn't super-soft, but it's do-able and would be a good goal.GL to everybody else racing, and good luck to gru to on his 30 mile fun run.

Podium visit? No qualifiers for field size.

Nice little 6 mile run. About 80 when I left, 75 or so when I got back. Something happened in the neighborhood across from ours. 2 firetrucks and an ambulance come in sirens blaring. Of course, I get back home and my wife heard them so she was freaked it was something with me while I was running as she expected me home quicker. She had it in her head I was just doing 3 miles.

Long runs will be on Saturday mornings from now on...but no way I could get it in this weekend. Trip from Nashville to Knoxville and back tomorrow to get my son. Then Sunday from Nashville to Memphis and back to pick up my niece who will be staying with us to watch my son next week since the camp he is going to next week is only a half day.
