Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

With my shins feeling better since my injury on May 3rd, I decided to do a 5K today. Since my injury i've logged 4 miles.

It was just a local one and didn't know what to expect out of me or competition.

Goal 1) Not get injured 2) Win if I could

Due to thunderstorms and downpours the 5K kept getting delayed. So I warmed up and then had to cool down...warmed up and then cooled down...this happened 3-4 times.

Race strategy:

-I wanted to start off mile one at a 630ish pace and then just go as best I can after.

Race:

-60ish participants and quite a few young kids. The course took a short road before turning left and I was pinned against the side. So I wanted to go fast to start just to get around the corner. I did and was leading at that point. Then I just strided out and tried to keep a good pace. 4 young HS kids passed me within the first quarter mile and then a mid 20's guy passed me. I was thinking wow...no way they keep that pace up. I soon passed 1 of the HS kids...however the pack of 4 kept pulling away. I didn't want to push my leg and get it injured...but I also didn't want to get out of range. Mile 1, I clocked in at 5:56. I was thinking OMG, I wasn't even going all out and clocked a sub 6 minute mile. The pack continued to pull away from me and I attempted to close that gap, but it never happened. I didn't have "it" in my lungs at all. Felt out of shape due to not logging miles the last 3 weeks. Mile 2 clocked in at 12:46. Finished the 5K in 1956. I could see the finish line and was going all out at the end to get under 20 minutes.

Disappointed that I bonked and wasn't in shape. But still had a PR and didn't get injured.

videos of stroking techiques? i learned on my own as a teeneager. thought that was fairly common??

sounds pretty cool, working some new muscles, good luck!
:grad: You don't know me very well, do you? All part of my over thinker DNA. I know it seems  but it actually makes things more enjoyable for all training aspects. I'm sure I could have figured things out on my own, but I'd like to go for AG hardware in the two multi-sport kayak events I'm registered for. Next up is learning the lean turn to cut the buoys during races. I didn't feel like trying it yesterday and dumping the boat in the process. I am also heading to ****'s in a few to pick up some gloves. I blistered my hands pretty good.
:whoosh: Not sure his question was a serious one if you read how he learned his "stroking" techniques.
:bag:
Given the inadvertent double double entendre, you're forgiven. Looking forward to more reports of the 50 y.o. men and their gaggles of 20 y.o. ladies.benson sub-20:00 and a PR. Woo hoo!

Soldier Field 10 Mile race report

1:12:25 .. 7:15/mile .. 172 avg. HR

8th of 227 in A.G. (7th in the CARA points competition) 458 of about 16,650 overall

Overall, a satisfactory effort given a very crowded start and some strong winds off of Lake Michigan as we turned back north on a generally out and back course along the lake. A little disappointed in the points placing, but I knew a lot of the area's runners show up for this big race. Seventh place was almost two minutes in front of me; ninth was just 9 seconds behind me. The time was slower than a month ago, given a higher temp and the wind. HR was very consistent (last 10 miler - 171 HR; half-marathon - 172 HR).

An early, but normal race morning. 'Normal' except for the fact that buddy Wraith crashed at my place to save some time for the 7 a.m. start. Always great to spend time with him!! Stadium parking lots were open and free, so that was easy. Checked the gear, warmed up, and headed to the corrals. I was extremely impressed and moved by the pre-race activities - playing of taps, introductions of some veterans, and a stirring anthem as the U.S. flags around the stadium snapped in the wind, backdropped by a dark sky up north. (We just dodged a nasty line of storms this a.m.)

I was slotted in the fourth large corral, though by my predicted time, I should have been in the first corral after the elites. I did sneak up to the second corral before the start, but the first half-mile was still a slog. Plus, with an extended time in the corral, I had to make an extra pee stop before mile 1. It's pretty clear to see when we turned back into the wind:

mile 1: 7:22 .. 158 HR

mile 2: 6:58 .. 169

mile 3: 6:59 .. 169

mile 4: 7:11 .. 169

mile 5: 7:01 .. 171

mile 6: 7:18 .. 175

mile 7: 7:19 .. 176

mile 8: 7:17 .. 175

mile 9: 7:29 .. 177

mile 10: 7:09 . 181

extra: :23 .. 182

I don't know that I could have done much better. My HR was in the low 180's for the entire last mile, and that's the best I can sustain for any amount of time. I would have liked to have more running room at the start, and I'd like to know what pace I could have held without turning into strong winds. But it's a very neat event, especially when I get to hang with Wraith!

wow, those are some consistant splits.

great job.

Think I'm concussed. :X

Some of you know I came from racing Enduros. Since picking up this marathon habit, I haven't touched the bike in two years. My nephew was over and begged me to take him back to our old section of trails for a few laps on his bike. I couldn't resist so we took both bikes out. It's amazing what running did for my endurance on the bike. Holy crap I was flyin' and felt like I could go forever. This was also after I had already ran a muggy 8 for lunch. :excited:

The excitement came to a screeching halt about an hour in when a stick decided to wedge itself in my front wheel right behind the brake caliper. It was like an instant eject button - right over the bars I went. Conked my head pretty good on the ground. Been fighting headaches ever since. Anyone want to buy an 09 450F?

Got my recovery in at 9:30 this morning to beat the heat. I should've went at 6:30. It's already nasty out there. Hope all the racers stay safe!

Congrats to wraith and Tri on the soldier field run. Looking forward to the RRs.
please tell me you had a :football:

could have been worse man, glad your ok.

Thanks, bro. Awesome job on your race as well! That's a helluva pace for 10 miles.

Ugh! I think my Garmin 305 that I've had since late 2008 just bit the dust. It won't turn on or charge at all. I was sensing it was on its last legs but this is bad timing. I don't keep up on the new ones. What should I buy? The 610? I use it for running only.As for me, ran around 8 miles at a pace that was probably too fast. Felt fine. I'll probably just stick to recovery runs from here on out.
mine died a few months ago as well. i just attached it to the charger and a couple days later it fired up on its own and no problems since. weird. try it.
OK, I have it doing that now, actually. (Of course, sometimes it's also nice to have an excuse to go out and buy the newest and greatest!)
I've had the Motorola MOTOACTV for a few weeks now and love this thing. Its a huge jump in technology from the 305 (which I used for the past 2 years). It will pair with your garmin HR strap, so no need to go buy a new one.
I have a 305 and my wife has a MOTOACTV. Yeah, the MOTOACTV is way more slick and it acts as the watch and the music player, but I prefer my 305. It's kind of tricky to figure out and deal with, and I like simple big numbers.Last real run today before the full next week. Hilly 12mi at a 9:15 pace. Felt great to do a decent sized run but not be wiped out for once! Next week is all shorter runs.

Hang 10, tri-man, Benson good #### guys. congrats!

5 miles today 8:49/149. Happy I was able to keep the HR down a bit but knee started bugging me again around mile 4.

Great races out there Hang 10, tri-man, and Benson! Some great times are being posted in the warmth.

Ned -- hope you are okay. Don't #### around with a concussion.

I'm eating some peanut butter and bagel right now and in less than 3 hours, I'll be running my 3rd marathon. First two were at 3:39 and 3:36.

I'd like to finish between 3:45 and 3:50. I'll go out at a 3:38 pace and see how it feels. The heat will be creeping up later and expect it to be 70+ degrees when I finish. And right now, there isn't a cloud in the sky.

If anyone has any desire to track me, you can at this site --> http://results.bazumedia.com/event/results/event/event-1217 I'm bib 3489. Race starts at 8 am (eastern time.)

 Nice work. No shame in a sub 20 5k.

Nice work Tri and Hang 10. We sure do have some guys in great shape in this thread.

Thanks for the support fellas.

Calves are cramped today, so i'm working them out with that roller. If I don't get hurt in the future because of the roller...I owe somebody some spotted cow :banned:

benson - sub 20 after a 3 week hiatus is no joke. Nice job! Now go rest up and take things slow. Glad to hear you came out injury free, but please be careful. Think long-term and you'll reap the benefits. You've got some serious untapped potential yet. If you make a concerted effort on building your endurance, I have no doubt you'd be a < 18:00 5K'er. /toughlove

tri-man - what else is there left to say? You are in unbelievable shape right now. It is a lot of fun watching you crush every race you enter. You are a mentor to us all. :tebow:

cn - of course I had my helmet. I may be a hill billy, but I'm not that stupid.

Hang10 - Congrats on the PR! Holy crap man, 40:55 is smoking. This has been an incredible start to the season for this whole thread. Way to keep things going!

Sean - Any idea on your max HR? That's a fantastic pace at 149.

SC crossed the mat at mile 10 in 1:23:30 (8:21) pace. Right on the 3:38 target. Things must be feeling good. :towelwave:

On the schedule today was a 15mi trail run. With the heat/humidity, I woke up at 4:15 so I could hit the trails at sunrise. Out the door at 5:30 and I get to the park. It's fn closed. In all my years of going to this park, it never dawned on me that they don't open until 8am. :bag:

I really didn't want to wait around for 2+ hours for it to open, so I turned around and went home. Changed out my trail shoes for my road shoes and hit the road at 6:30. I decided I'd run back to the park and run the back road along the creek. I noticed right away that things felt very easy. My HR was well under control even though I was sweating like crazy already at mile 2 (71 degrees + 88% humidity at the start). This turned into one of those runs where the miles just melted away. Before I knew it I was hitting my turn around at 7.7 and felt invincible. I've run this route dozens of times so I knew when I went past my usual turn around that I was losing satellite signal under the tree canopy (lost a good 30sec). At mile 11 the upper level fog finally burned away. And there was the sun. It's incredible what the sun does to you. My HR seemed to instantly creep from mile 12 on. It was too late by then. I was in such a groove, it was going to take some serious heat to slow me down. Ended up at 9:15/148. Oh what I wouldn't give to have run today in 45 degrees to see what I really had.

Headaches are still here, but a little less sharp than yesterday's. I was worried the extended run might make things worse, but so far so good. :fingerscrossed:

Great races Tri-man and Hang 10!

Ned - nice run! It's tough when you have to shuffle your plans on the fly like that, but oddly, it sometimes leads to a great experience like that!

Steel Curtain - way to go!!! Like Ned said, you didn't have the chance to maximize the training, but still ran a really solid marathon!

benson, tri-man, Hang 10 - Great races, guys!!

SteelCurtain - Congrats on a solid marathon!

Ned - Nice run! Glad you're feeling better!!

Easy 12-miler for me yesterday. With the 8K tomorrow morning, trying to decide if I wanna go out for an easy little run today or not. Probably should, if only to burn a few of the calories I :banned: last night....

You really had a great day, made more impressive with the wind on the back half of the course - Congratulations! Always awesome hanging out with you as well my friend. I'm really glad you decided to run this one!

Soldier Field 10 mile:

I really wasn't sure what to expect from this race - 4 weeks ago, I wasn't even sure I could run 10 miles! (and hadn't done so since November 19, when my ankles first started to fall off). Two weeks ago on 5/12 I did 8:46s (1:27:41) on a 10 mile training run, but last weekend my ankle joints were bothering me during an 8 miler and I could only muster 9:21s with a couple of walking breaks. Worked the ankles at PT this week and made sure I warmed up and stretched before the race.

Stayed at Tri-Man's place Friday night since he lives much closer to the city than I do, and it was great getting to hang out and catch up Fri night and Sat before/after the race. Many of the guys in this thread have had the pleasure of meeting Tri-man and know what an awesome guy he is.

I set the auto lap function for 1.01 miles to account for a little extra distance, but oddly enough my total mileage ended up at 10.01 miles. Tri-man already mentioned the cool, overcast and very windy conditions - wind at our backs for the first 5 miles, then in our faces or blowing us off the trail from the side for the back 5.

1 1.01 8:47 159 HR

2 1.01 8:34 163 HR

3 1.01 8:35 164 HR

4 1.01 8:47 166 HR

5 1.01 8:27 170 HR

6 1.01 8:37 171 HR

7 1.01 8:38 173 HR

8 1.01 8:34 173 HR

9 1.01 8:50 174 HR

10 0.92 8:53 179 HR

(I know I was running faster than that for the last mile - I'm thinking the tunnel onto the field messed up the Garmin results for both distance and pace. My total time for the last split was 8:09 and I'd guess that was closer to my actual pace)

Summary 1:26:46, 10.01 miles, 8:40 pace - 3016/12845 finishers, 324/816 division (M40-44)

I decided to stay relatively conservative on the front 6, then pick it up from there... as you can see the "pick it up" didn't really happen. My HR was just fine, but I could not get my legs to turn over faster. In fact, my quads were completely fried by the end of the race and I can't explain why. 36 hours later and they are still pretty shot.

Anyway, even though this was my slowest effort at Soldier Field over 6 races, I'm pretty pleased I was able to log 8:40s given that my first outdoor run this year was on April 7. Anything under 9s would have made me happy.

By the way, this thread moves crazy fast now with all the new kids contributing! You miss a few days and you fall way behind!!

Oh what I wouldn't give to have run today in 45 degrees to see what I really had.Headaches are still here, but a little less sharp than yesterday's. I was worried the extended run might make things worse, but so far so good. :fingerscrossed:
Thanks for the support/advice Ned, it's really appreciated.Nice work on having to change plans but powering through. Nothing like having a great run and knowing you're improving. What's up with the headaches?

Anyway, even though this was my slowest effort at Soldier Field over 6 races, I'm pretty pleased I was able to log 8:40s given that my first outdoor run this year was on April 7. Anything under 9s would have made me happy.
:hifive: glad to see you're making good strides in your recovery. You've got more patience than I do.

Soldier Field 10 mile:

:hifive: That really was a solid effort as you work your way back. I'm sure the cross-training has helped as well. Glad we could spend the time together! The pre-race tribute to the troops got the weekend off to a great start.

I've been concussed...not fun. The headaches will happen, but they subside. Hope they end soon for you.Update: Just got back from a 38 mile bike ride with the gf. Glad she decided to come along...obviously at a much slower pace with her ;)

Nice races and workouts for everyone this weekend.

Had a bit of rest and cross training this weekend.

Bit of a workout trudging against the current to get to the prime fishing spot. Well, what used to be a prime spot. Nothing really biting.

COuldn't even get a few carp to bite at a pooling area near where we exit the river.

Then a bit of lawn mowing this afternoon.

But the legs are definitely ready for a run tomorrow morning.

Out the door at 5:30 this morning to beat the heat/humidity again. I sweat more today than I did on Sunday's 15. :X Breathing was tough thanks to all of fog rolling thru. 72/95% at the start.

On the schedule was 9mi with 5LT. It was a weird run, but whoa this was fast. At mile 7 (last LT mile) I had to slow myself down or I was going to blow right through LT. I thought I was pushing through the rough breathing, but I was pushing through the pace instead. I donked up the pacing, but encouraged by the strong effort in these crappy conditions. Splits were 7:33/161, 7:34/169, 7:29/172, 7:19/175, 7:39/176 Average = 7:30/171

I say it a lot, but these runs are the best barometer we have for checking our fitness (aside from racing). I'm pretty pumped at the progress so far for 2012.

02/22 - 9/5LT 8:06/176

03/07 - 10/6LT 8:07/175

03/21 - 11/7LT 7:44/174

04/04 - 9/5LT 7:35/174

04/18 - 8/4LT 7:34/174

05/29 - 9/5LT 7:30/171

Just catching up a bit this morning.

Great racing guys. Wraith, Tri-Man, Hang-10, Benson, and Steel Curtain. Not sure what the weather was like in your areas of the country, but if it was anything like mine, it was not ideal. It was hot and hotter the last couple of days.

As for me, I have been doing a whole lot of nothing lately. I did manage to get in 8 on Friday, but my weekend was ruined by a trip to the ER and lack of sleep. ER was for a kid vs water slide Saturday night. Slide 1, kid 0. Kid is okay after 3 stitches to just above his eye. Dad on the other hand has not recovered from being at the ER until 1 that night. I think that combined with a bit of post marathon blues, I am having trouble to get motivated right now. Too much going on to run either early in the morning or later at night to avoid the heat. I know, excuses, excuses. I am hopefully getting out of it though. We shall see.

Have a great day all.

Ahh...another trip to the ER for this crew. Never a fun thing. As for the weather. Yes, very hot here in TN, humid and just hot from morning til night (still in the 80s and humid after the sun goes down).Supposed to cool down some this weekend though. Back into the 70s by Saturday. Will a nice change.

Ooof. Glad the kid's OK. How old?I feel ya on the post marathon blues. It's very real. Best cure is picking out another race so you have something to focus on.

I need to pick another that is coming up.I don't have anything planned til July. Then I have 2 5ks then...doing the Color Run 5k in October...a possible Marathon relay in October and the marathon in December. That said...my next few weeks will be getting acclimated to the new schedule of having both kids home every day.

He is four and I swear is made of rubber. He still swam for an hour or so after it happened. Once we got home it started to swell a bit and the cut really openned up.I hear you on the next race. I need to figure out what and when I am going to do besides the Bourbon Chase in the fall. I am split right now on marathon vs. half marathon at the moment.

4 mile hill/sprint workout Friday, felt great and did the 2 miles back down in 13:05.

Sunday - 4 miles in the middle of the afternoon heat, 27:30, I was satisfied. Fatigued way too quickly on my leg workout afterwards though, don't think I had enough fluids.

Monday sucked - I can run in 90+ degree heat with humidtiy, but....I need a breeze and there was none of it Monday. Probably didn't help that we hosted a party Sunday and the mass quantities of alcohol left my dry mouthed, but - no regrets. Still got my 5 done in 36 mins, but mile 3 to 4 was absolutely brutal. One of those runs in which I almost convince myself to start running at 5 am instead of mid afternoon on weekends and evenings during the week. Wasn't hard to justify not setting the alarm early last night, I'm just not a morning person.

Need to lift today and not sure how much time I'll have to run, hoping for 4 but...we'll see.

I think you need to find something stupid to race. In 30 seconds of Googling, I found this. Get some buddies and go race for pure fun and nothing else.
