Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

343 and big head phone girl...nice.
 Big Headphones girl = #83 I would have raced behind either of them without regard to time.
...I'm going to do a tri later in the year with a 12 mile paddle.
Of course you are. Probably only bc you couldn't find one with a 13 mile paddle. I'm also guessing that the course is all upstream, and that they only let you use fly swatters as paddles.
And he has to catch at least 3 legal fish during the paddle too...and have them cleaned by the finish.
Well duh...gu's and gels won't be allowed so you'd have to get your nutrition either fishing on the paddle or gathering blackberries on the run if you didn't want to boink.

How long is a third of a mile swim?

I can't swim but they are hosting a tri in my town. 14 mile ride, 3 mile run to go with swim. You also have to sign up for a day membership to some tri organization.

Might give me something to aim for this summer since it doesn't look like I'll be marathoning it any time soon.

It would take me around 11 minutes, Sand would go just over 8+ minutes I am guessing. Its just under 24 lengths of a 25 yard pool (587 yards). The one day membership is to USA Triathlon (USAT). Daily rates are $10 and guys like me who do a bunch of multi-sport events buy annual memberships for, as I recall, $44. You could get through this, even if you are short on time. USAT rules allow for grabbing on to boat, kayaks as long as they do not advance you and touching bottom and propelling yourself is OK too. Post a link to the event. Some small town events event have noodles, etc to help new athletes get through the swim. This is how it starts.

Hey every one. Let me first apologies for this post. I'm writing it on my phone.

As most of you know I'm doing the escape from alcatraz tomorrow. Here has been my experience so far.

Thursday - I returned home from a work trip where I broke down my bike packed said hi to the family and went to bed.

Friday - drive to the airport check in and await for the flight. The checked my binge and wished it safe travels. because I travel a lot I have a lot of perks. So I dont have to put up with the normal travel bs most people have to. While waiting for my flight I noticed it was over sold so I voleentered my seat for a flight taking place 3 hours later. Made a nice buck on that and was upgraded to first class due to status. The flight was great other than the one year old talking the while time.

After landing in sfo I had to pick up my bags and bike hoping both where in good condition. I noticed a couple of holes in my bike box but evening seemed to be in order.

Now I had to find out how to get to my hotel. Taxis are 60ish and my hotel didn't have a shuttle. Lucky they have share a ride vans. The drive dropped me off and tried to charge me an extra 5 bucks due to my bike. He said he could have picked up one more. Keep in mind the can was completely full. So I told him everyone was too fat and there was no room. He laughed and didn't make me pay.

Droped my gear off and walked around a bit. The hills oh my the hills.

Saturday - packet pick up: I put my bike together loaded evening I needed and rode the 10 miles to registration. I have never ride in the city. I hate riding in the road but sfo is a big bike city so I have it a shot. Everything went great no close calls and if I lived here I would bike everyday.

So I make it to packet pick up and the line is really long. It took me 45 minutes from the back of the line until I walked out with ask my stuff. Prerace meeting was dumb. It covered everything in the emails and youtube clips. I bought a couple shirts visited some tents and rode back to the hotel.

I'm glad I rode today the hills while big are managible. Mtb hills >>> road hills.

Guy back to the hotel showered and talked to the manager about late check out. She said 2 but I told her I need 4 so could shower break down my bike etc.. To catch the red eye home. Lucky I have status with marriott so she agreed.

Right now I'm finishing diner at uncle vitos pizza. I'm walk around a bit and then hit the sack for my 330am wake up call.

This is :bs: and contrary to USAT rules: - Swimmmers who grab on to a kayak, rowboat or surfoad will be assessed a 2 minute penalty but will be allowed to continue the race.

And, the typo looks like I typed it. Looks like they take themselves quite serious. As a recommendation, go here and post up a question about doing this as a first time tri. The folks on BeginnerTriathlete tend to be really good people.

Congrats 2Young - great race. Enjoyed the report as well.

It was a little steamy this afternoon but managed to get a nice long (for me anyway) run in. Was close to the furthest I've ever run and it felt great. Knee held up without issue.

Also, I only have a Trex mountain bike. Do I need a racing bike or will that be OK for this event.
A mountain bike is fine.Sean - nice run!

Dexter - you da man!! That will be an awesome experience. A friend of mine did it a few years ago - without his glasses, he aimed for the wrong landmark and got well off-course, then had a bike flat. Don't be that guy! Go show them how we do it in the midwest.

Still :jealous: Man, take it in. Like Sand said on the FB site, this is a Bucket List Race for lots and lots of us. Can't wait to hear the details.

running a 5k tomorrow at an airport. some/all of it are on the runway from what i can tell, so i'm assuming it will be a flat course (a rare thing here in ky)!

Good luck tomorrow, looking forward to following along!

Finished my first race. Not sure of exact times, but seems I was slower than last year. Basically swam like a fish, rode like a granny, and ran like a wounded duck. Ended up way down the list in AG - from the list of the top 40 or so it looked like 20+% were M40-44.

Tomorrow looks to be pouring rain for the whole event. Bleh.

Up early today for a 71 mile bike ride. Half solo, half with a group. 18.1 avg and roughly in the 150 watt range. The A bike is in the shop so I broke out the climbing/comfort machine with the non-aero wheels and compact crank. Ended up around 4 hours which was the primary goal (seat time). Some randon thoughts...

1. Forgot how much I love to ride on an early weekend morning. Sun not doing it's damage and hitting those cool air pockets. For the first hour or so I see more bikes than cars. Left the headphones at home for a change and enjoyed it.

2. Remember why I transitioned to TT racing instead of pack racing. The group wasn't even hammering and I was getting dropped on the hills even at 400+ watts. Back on the flats in the paceline we're rolling and my hr is 100-110. The mini-mes carry zero momentum into hills. I'm usually braking at the start and then they accelerate after I lose my speed. I do one thing better than most...decelerate.
I love me an early morning weekend ride as well. I also like to ride my bike in the morning on weekends ;) (I'm having a rare Saturday night in, so I can get a long ride in tomorrow!). I don't like group rides either as I like to go my pace all the time, and don't want to hear about somebody's week at work while I'm pedaling.

Just got done with a 7 mile jaunt, about all I can say is I finished. Hope everyone does well this weekend!
That is more then a lot of people can say. Congrats on the mileage.
Amen! Way to git'er done!
Doesn't look so forgiving. But I think I might do it.
DO IT!!!! Here's a link to the thread I started when I ran my first tri. You certainly can do it on a Mt. bike, though once your done I'm guessing you are going to want to purchase one (the next thread I started after the one linked was one to help me buy a road bike!!
Congrats 2Young - great race. Enjoyed the report as well.

If it isn't flat, please let me know which airport, so I don't ever fly there. Giddy'up!!

Damn sorry to hear that the run/bike didn't go so well, and that it's likely raining tomorrow. Go tear it up!______________________________

My update:

I did P90x Kenpo today and likely may never do it again. I think I'm going to start doing Plyo twice a week instead, as I'm certain I get more out of it. Tomorrow I hope to be more ambitious = 40+ mile morning ride, balls out; P90x Chest, shoulders and triceps; ab ripper, and maybe Cross Fit at the end of the day :boxing:

Missed this...Yeah, still on a high to a point. But it's quickly fading to the question of What's Next? I ran 6 miles yesterday but that's been it. I haven't been particularly motivated although, in fairness, it's only been a week. After a 3:08 the obvious next goal is sub 3:00. I'm just wondering if I want shoot for that for Chicago in October considering the difficulty of training in the summer heat, the demands of training and it's effect on one's social life, etc.

13 today with the last 8 at marathon pace. This went well, but I definitely need to get up earlier and get out there before it warms up too much. The problem is that I'm a totall wuss when it comes to needing sleep. If it were up to me, I'd be asleep by 9:00 every night. Last night, though, the kids weren't in bed until 10, and then Mrs. Karamazov made some demands on my time that precluded me to getting to sleep until a little after 11. I should have just gotten up 5:00 so I could have my coffee, eat some breakfast, and take care of business and still get out there by daybreak, but instead I slept until 6:45 and didn't hit the asphalt until 8:00. By then it was already 75 and humid. It worked out okay, but that's only because I wasn't going that long; 16 or so would have really taken a toll on me in the heat/humidity.

What's Next is a 5 mile jaunt with tri-man in two weeks! :excited: You could consider a half-marathon. Given your strong conditioning, you should be able to nail one of those. CARA has a big HM on 9/9 in the city. I'll probably pass on that (since I'm stuck in 4th in the CARA circuit standings), and instead I'm looking at races out in Fox Valley on 9/16. They have a HM (which I'll run), a 20 miler, and a marathon. It's a smaller set of races. I might be able to run top 10 in the HM. You're running better than me ...you could be around top 5! If you do get some quality training, you could always run the full marathon. Sounds like a nice setting, flat course, and small crowds.

Aren't you a week ahead in your training? Anyways, those marathon pace runs are the hardest runs on the schedule. As long as you're able to complete those, you should feel good. The fact that you did it in the heat should only leave you feeling more confident in your fitness.

Yes, looking forward to the five miler! Who knows? Maybe that will spark something in me for these shorter races. I've been so marathon focused that I've never specifically trained for anything else. I've run the Naperville Trails HM the last two years (the Sunday after Labor Day) but mainly just as a measuring stick on my fitness for the Chicago Marathon. I remember you making the comment about "racing your way into shape" (paraphrasing - something like that anyways). I think I see the wisdom in that even though it's often a deviation from the Pfitzinger schedules.

United Way 5K on the Runway - The race was completely on the smaller runway at Bluegrass Airport in Lexington, so it was indeed as flat as one can get. I was thinking they might have part of the race on the area surrounding the airport and then finish on the runway, but the entire race was 2 laps around the runway. My previous PR was 29:30 (only ran 2) and so with the flat course I was aiming for something right at 28 min. I was a little disappointed as the race description said "with aircraft as your scenery", but there were only a couple of glimpses of planes as they took off during the race. I thought they might have a few private planes, etc. parked along the way, but no such luck.

I would estimate about 400 runners in the event, which actually made it a bit crowded at the starting line. I had hoped to "sand" the first mile, but got stuck in a huddled mass for a while. Finished the first mile in just over 9:00 (pretty fast for me). I was breathing a little harder than expected at this point, but I kept close to the same pace for most of mile 2. I hit a bit of a mental wall near the end of mile 2 and slowed some from there through the first part of the third mile though. I think it came from the difficulty in judging distances because the whole course looked basically the same. As i got near the far turn, I was able to pick it back up for the last half mile or so to finish at 28:24.

Overall a little slower than I had hoped, but I did take over a minute of my PR from just a couple of months ago.

Beautiful beautiful race. It was a perfect day.

Quick report:

Swim- hard I threw up twice from sea sickness and salt water.

Bike hilly and fun

Run- what a mess hills stairs sand more hills and extreme cramping in both legs.

Glad you finished. Sorry about the swim - rough conditions can really screw up the best of swimmers. It just happens sometimes.

Got a nice easy 4 miles in tonight to ease myself back in after 4 days off with sinus/bronchitis.

Averaged around 10:30 and kept the HR under 150 other than a few hills spiking it for a second.

Felt good to get back out there. Bit humid maybe...will have to check...it was about 73 degrees, but felt thick.

Saw quite a few deer out on the run tonight which is always interesting.

Quick report from my double this weekend.

Race 1 (tri): Absolutely crushed the swim. I was the fastest person over the age of 20 - 1/51 AG. And I kept it pretty easy besides. Bike was a bit of a disappointment - I was :10 slower than last year, which is a bit of a surprise - 7/51AG. Run was actually quite good. I averaged 7:38/mile, which was five seconds better than last year - 13/51AG. We had nice overcast conditions, so my performance was pretty much on par with previous. Not bad considering my injury laden winter and general lack of work. Overall I was 8/51 in AG. Tons of fast folk showed up - I had no chance of backing onto the podium here.

Race 2 (du): I was feeling yesterday, both the race and the 5 hour drive. The weather looked absolutely horrible, but miraculously the rain stayed away. It was 75F/100%RH, though. Bloody swamp as it poured all day in NO yesterday. First run was decent - 7:39/mile and 9/29AG. The bike was both awesome and terrifying. The way out and in to the bridge was scary - the roads were wet and they use a pebbleized surface here that is slick as snot. I slowed way down for lots of these curves and did slide a bit in one. The ride up to the bridge was cool; a tremendously rare event that was loads of fun. The way down from the bridge was a bit high on the pucker factor - they had to put plywood down over expansion joints and hitting those in the wet at 35mph wasn't much fun. Still, I did crush this ride. Won the AG by a good bit and was 7/170 overall on the bike. Great result on tired legs. The second run was tough. Sweating doesn't cool you down as it doesn't go anywhere and it was getting hot. I managed 8:05/mile or so and improved to a whole 8/29 in AG. Still ridiculously slow on the run, though. Finished 4/29 in AG (so close!).

Weekend comments: Good grief I am a slug running. Out of the top 40 in the tri I was 39/40 on the run. In the du just a reasonable run performance would have gotten me a podium. I need to stay ####### healthy for a while. And lose some ####### weight - I am a moose.

Ancillary comment: Please offer up your prayers to a participant in the tri from Saturday. He evidently was coming down one steep hill (I hit 49mph on that hill) that has a few sweeping curves. He missed a curve and went into the opposite lane and went under a van. Evidently it was really bad.

Beautiful beautiful race. It was a perfect day.

Quick report:

Swim- hard I threw up twice from sea sickness and salt water.

Bike hilly and fun

Run- what a mess hills stairs sand more hills and extreme cramping in both legs.
:hifive: to throwing up during the swim leg of a tri (been there; done that)! Overall - what an accomplishment!!! Congrats, Dexter!!!!!Prince - PRs are PRs. Nicely done!!

Sand - tough conditions for racing. So sorry to hear about the triathlete's accident. That puts things in perspective.

Dexter - congrats on finishing. Seems like an awesome experience. Look forward to a detailed write up.

Prince Myshkin - nice job on the PR!

Sand - sounds like you did pretty damn good given the conditions. Sucks you just missed the podium. Hope that other racer pulls through ok - scary stuff.

AcerFC - great race!

In this heat (apparently it topped out during my run at 92, 60% humidity) and coming off a 5k trial yesterday I expected this to just be a nice jog, but felt so good after 3 miles that I decided to make a race out of it. Got 6 miles done in 43 mins in splits of 7:05-7:15-7:20-7:10-7:15-6:55

Now I get to take it easy tomorrow (5 miles - probably in the 37 min range) before some sort of sprint interval workout Tuesday, we'll see how the legs are feeling after a tough weekend.

Nice work sand!

Great job, Sand. I can't really imagine doing two events back-to-back like that, let alone putting up those kinds of results in the process.

Hope the other guy is okay.

Great races guys. I am still amazed how you can swim, then bike and then run in one event. I can't imagine the effort there.

Dexter - Any update on your Ricky Sinz encounter? Did you touch his junk or what? Great race by the way. After just walking those hills on vacation many years ago, I could not imagine trying to run or even bike them. Like 2YBB said, that race is pretty epic around the tri community and you finished it so many will be jealous of you for that.

-----------

Nothing to update for me. I was out of town this weekend and could not run.

Have a great day all.

I honestly don't think I've ever heard of a race being done on an airport runway before. That would actually be kind of cool -- something different anyway. Congratulations on the new PR!

Ran my 2nd 5K ever on Saturday. Ended up 3 minutes better than the one I ran last year. All of the running the last 6 months really paid off. I'll never be able to run the fast ones that most of you guys can do but I'm pretty happy with my time. I ended up with a time of 25.12. I don't have any sort of Garmin or anything so have no idea my times per mile. I tried to pace myself the 1st mile but ended up pretty tired at the end so not sure if I went out to fast or not. Last year I did this exact 5K in 28.10 so the running the last 6 months have really helped me..

Thanks again for all of the tips.. My goal for next year will be cutting it to 24 minutes. I think I need to start running longer runs but slower to improve my times - right?
