Ran a 10k in June (13 Viewers)

Earlier this week I ordered two new sneakers.

Saucony Kinvara 2

Saucony Mirage

These shoes have a 4mm heel to toe drop as opposed to the traditional 12mm on most running shoes. I don't know how much you guys have discussed form but that is what I'm focusing on right now. I want to ensure that I'm landing on my mid-sole not heel striking. With clunky 12mm sneakers it's hard not to land on your heel because of the position all that cushion puts your foot in. I'm really looking forward to trying out these new sneakers and seeing if I can make some improvement with them.
Yes, those will definitely help you for speed runs and such.

My question is, have you gone anywhere to have your gait analyzed (local running store)?

I ask because you bought a neutral shoe, and a stability shoe.

If you need stability, the neutral shoe may end up with you injured and vice versa.
The Mirage sneakers are great. I saw a noticeable drop in my training times without exerting any extra energy. But I should have taken the advice posted here and eased into them. It took me a few days to figure out the mid-sole strike and my left heel took some serious abuse on those 5-7 mile runs. I haven't run in 3 weeks and will probably rest for 1 or 2 more. It didn't help that I smashed that same heel on some rocks at the beach this weekend.I would definitely recommend these type of sneakers to anyone looking to improve their time, though. Just be smart and only use them for a short distance at the end of your run until you become comfortable with the heel to toe ratio.

Checking in here. Getting ready for a small gathering of my tri-friends this weekend - 925 or so. So I am getting some good work in without burying myself. Yesterday a 4 mile run on the dreadmill - seriously way too brutal outside at lunch to run (like 170 suck index). Then a swim in which I just managed to get in 1500 between thunderstorms. Finished that out with a mediocre 6:35 500 - best I can muster with the amount of swim work I have been putting in.

Tonight was a 23 mile ride. Managed to get soaked - severe thunderstorm warning type deluge. Loads of fun. Two people went down and slid off the road. I took it very easy around corners. That went pretty well, as I stayed upright and got a decent bike in. Tonight am starting to construct the race machine, including making a new rear disc cover since the seat stays on the new bike are too narrow for the commercially available disc covers.

In a funny turn evidently the tri company doing the race this weekend has been getting complaints about time estimate padding and they asked me to prove that I could put up the time I claimed (8:00 over 600yds). So I pointed out nicely in the last two years that my times were 8:22 and 6:51 in the last two years (which they could have looked up - lazy bastages) and that my time would me more of a function of their buoy placing ability rather than my swim capability. No response to that. :P

Edit: Forgot. Shamelessly stolen from another thread here. Biker guys - here is a great case for the supremacy of mountain biking.
GL this weekend! at the bolded. That chick is mega hot.

I know it's not for everyone but there are a few of you, like myself, that have essentially become vampire runners. I pretty much won't go out in the sun right now until it starts getting cooler. Just can't handle it.
Personally, I love running at night after the sun has gone down.Went out tonight at 7:30 pm for 12 miles. Felt super easy running the first 6 miles in 48:52 (8:09/mile) and then picked it up a bit and ran the last 6 miles in 45:39 (7:37). Overall average was 7:53/mile. Felt strong the whole way and only needed 20 ounces of Gatorade despite temps in the 70s.
Nice!
OK, guys, tri-man and I talked about this a little bit on our run a couple of weeks ago, so I figured I might as well plant the seed...

How many of you might potentially be interested in doing the 2013 Chicago Ragnar Relay on June 7-8, 2013? It starts in Madison, WI, and ends in Chicago. Logistically, it would seem rather easy for me, tri-man, Wraith, Jux, the Michigan guys, etc.

Obviously, we have plenty of time, but I just wanted to get the ball rolling. LMK what everyone thinks....
I'd love to do this. I'll talk to the wife about it tonight to get the seed planted. We have some good friends that moved out to Chicago about 5 years ago and haven't seen them in a while. This could be a great excuse to travel out there and visit.

Day 2, week 4 Pfitz 18/70 - 14mi MLR

These Wednesday MLRs are getting up there. 15, 9, 14 in the last 3 runs is a tall task. I felt that at around mile 10 when I started to get tired. Pace never faded, but the legs were definitely heavier on the back end of this run. It was dangerous out there after the sun came up. 71/71 created dense fog everywhere and made visibility terrible. I ended up staying in the neighborhoods to avoid running on any major roads. 9:33/143

Did a quick turnaround from last night's 12-miler and headed out this morning for another 6-miler. Conditions were good (61/57 at the finish), and the legs felt fresh. Averaged 7:55/mile and ran the last couple at 7:39 and 7:29.

Thought about running another tenth to make it a "10K" (right, beer 302?), but decided against it.... :P

7.5 miler with 3 at hmp

1 - 8:57, 128

2 - 8:57, 138

3 - 8:29, 152

4 - 8:27, 157

5 - 8:33, 159

6 - 10:24, 138

7 - 10:47, 138

7.5 - 13:00, 123

Enjoyed some lower temps last night as it was cloudy all day. It started raining around the beginning of the pace miles at mile 3 as it got dark. The pace miles went well but my gut started hurting during the cool down. You can see how ugly the last mile was. I'm pretty sure that was do to olive oil in the diet the last couple of days although it could be the Pepsi Next. I spent the rest of the farting up a storm to the point the gf wanted me to leave the room.

You can put me down as definitely interested. If my schedule works out I would love to do that. There is usually a planned event that we always attend that weekend, but if free, I am in.

What are some methods you guys use to deal with foot pain?

Been having some pain in my right heal for a good time, and as my weekly mileage increases the next few months I have a feeling this is something that will not be healing.

It doesn't seem to effect me when I run, but just walking around today i feel it every time I step, and if i squeeze my heel, there is pain.

Main thing I will try to focus on is not landing on my heal. I'm guessing that is the root cause.

What do you guys use?

Ice?

Massages?

New shoes?

Shoe padding?

HR monitor?
What you're describing (heel pain that goes away or subsides a little while running but comes back afterwards) sounds exactly like achilles tendonitis. This is a pretty common overuse injury that tends to occur when a person is building up mileage and intesity too quickly. Definitely ice it down for 15-20 minutes several times a day. This is standard treatment for pretty much every running injury. Taking a few days off would be a good idea, but if you can't (it sounds like you're training for something) at least make sure your miles are easy and low-intensity. No hard runs or speedwork. If this literally just started in the past few days, it may resolve on its own with just ice and relative rest.

Here's the #1 thing though. Do NOT attempt to change your running form right now. Changing your form to compensate for or "protect" an injured area is a good way to injure something else. Most running shoes are designed with heel-striking in mind, and it just isn't very likely that that's the cause of your pain. Underdeveloped calf muscles are a more likely culprit.
My standard answer for all things pain...Leg extensions (one legged)

Calf raises (heavy with extended stretch at end)
Thanks guys, will look into doing these.

I might be interested in this. I'm only about 7-8 hours west of Madison.

Day 3 week 4 18/55 10 miles

Mistake 1...ran my 5 recovery miles in the humidity last night.

Mistake 2...trying to turn around and run this morning...and not starting til 9.

Got through 8 miles of it and called it a day.

80/71 to start...88/70 when I finished.

Just flat out hot, sunny and nasty out and I was struggling.

Going to take tomorrow off and then get up early friday for the 15 miler I think. I have contemplated repeating last week's 14 miler or cutting it to 12 or 13 as I do have a 2 week buffer built into the plan to ease into things a bit here if needed and this may end up being more of a recovery/step back week I will add in to refresh myself.

Then Saturday's beer run will be treated as a recovery run.

My costume is here for the Tap n Run Beer 4k this weekend.

Friend and his sister (and her husband I think) came up with doing Rocky characters. I know two of them are going as Rocky and Apollo in Rocky 3 (the beach running scene)...I think someone is Mr. T as well.

So I came up with a Hulk Hogan costume to be Thunderlips.

Not my brightest idea as its a padded long sleeve shirt with muscles that I will be wearing with a bandana with the blonde wig out the back and a blond mustache.

Oh, and lots of beer.

Starts at 5...Im sure it will be about 90/72 for this...though, Im treating it as an easy run for the day (going to have to after getting my 15 in that morning or on Friday).
This is all sorts of AWESOME! After seeing the countless RAGBRAI costumes, I'm stoked for our group to decide on our future team name and related costumes. Our leading candidate right now is "Team Wets the Bed". This was inspired as one of our RAGBRAI partners might have been over served and thought he was outside the camper when he relieved himself on his own bed.

Anyone heard of or participated in the Hotter'N Hell Hundred?

It's multiple rides up to 100 miles in late August in north central Texas. Usually gets really, really hot there... like 100-110 degrees.

I'm considering doing this ride.
Coldues and pigskin have both done this ride multiple times. Hopefully pigskin dips his foot into the cat 5 race this year.
HHH is a GREAT, fast ride. I don't think I'm going to make it this year, but if you end up doing it, I might be able to be convinced to join. I'd love to make a run at sub 4:30 on that thing :boxing:

Count me in to make a mad dash there to see you all at the after party. Right now I am ecstatic that my hip is allowing me to run 2 miles at a time. I'd like to think I could run the distances needed but am afraid it is just a pipe dream.

My Update:

I have enjoyed being a lazy ### for the past month. I tried to do P90x Back and Shoulders on Sunday, and could only get half way through even though my lifts were all pitiful. Yesterday I ran 2 miles at 2:00 pm in 102 degrees of awfulness. I am still sweating from it. I'll try to get through P90 Legs and Back today, but am expecting a struggle. I hope to start full-bore next Monday.

For bikers out there, I just ordered these, as a friend highly recommended them.

I will have RAGBRAI pic's available soon. The good news is that I've reduced my e-mail inbox by over 500 messages since returning. The bad news is there are still over 1,000 to go  Once I'm caught up, I'll share a taste of the Mardi Gras on wheels.

Neat article in this month's New Yorker about a guy, Kip Litton, who began self-promoting his goal to run marathons in all 50 states. He is a 40-something "Master's" division marathoner who started placing in events across the country with sub 3-hour times, including Boston. After the Missoula, Montana marathon however, he got the attention of the winner of the "Master's" division.

It appears like the guy has an elaborate system for delaying his start time, cutting courses and cheating split times, ultimately ending with him placing in his division. And he has gone so far as to fabricate an entire marathon race in western Wyoming, complete with a website, made up names, and finishing times. He has been DQ'd from several races, and there are blogs all over the internet about this guy. I found it fascinating that someone would go to this much trouble. What makes it worse is that he was soliciting donations for a Cystic Fibrosis charity (apparently his son has CF) on his personal webpage (which has since been taken down). Supposedly he has received several thousands of dollars, but the charity claims he has only donated $20 to his name.

Family weekend at the Kentucky School for the Deaf (Actually you ran right near it on your 2nd leg last year near Danville). Something that we have done the last 3 years to support him and his hearing loss. He does not go to the school, but it is a great way to network with other families with hearing impaired children to make sure we can give him the best options. If it was anything but that I would be a definite. We will see though, it could be later in the month next year.

I was being sarcastic, and you had to go get all serious on me. Jerk. ;) Yeah, obviously that's pretty important. Hopefully it falls on a different weekend, and you can join us.

That MW Ragnar Relays event looks cool. One of my buddies in Chicago was trying to get some of the old band together for a relay this year, I assume he meant the Ragnar, but there were too many conflicts and too many people out of shape. May do it next year. Good luck to all doing it.

I pulled up lame last night 600m into my first interval (a planned 1600-800-800-1600) with a strained left calf. My calves and achilles felt a bit tight all day yesterday so I kinda had a bad feeling about the track workout. I have foolishly ignored these pulls or strains mid track workout in the past and run through them, only to find myself struggling to even walk an hour later. Then I'd be out 3-4 days. With this one I think I was smart to stop and nipped it in the bud. I jogged around for awhile to loosen it, did one more 400 just under 6min pace (87 secs) and still felt tightness so I shut it down. Iced the crap out the legs last night and took some aleve.

Today I started out slow to test it and gradually got into regular distance pace as my legs loosened up. Once I determined all seemed ok, I picked it up to make up some for yesterday. Did 7 total with the last 4 in 7:08/6:58/6:51/6:46. So far all seems ok but I am going to ice the crap out of them again tonight.

I'm thinking the strain in my calf and achilles tightness is from increased mileage and too many days not wearing the compression sleeves. I'm gonna wear the sleeves every day for awhile

Aiming for a local 5k next Saturday if the legs feel ok.

A bit of a redeeming run tonight. I struggled with the last few LT and MP runs I've had. This evening the temperature was in the high 60s and it was overcast - a bit humid though. I had a 10 mile run scheduled with 5 LT miles:

Mile 1. 8:02, HR 129

2. 7:54, 147

3. 7:51, 146

4. 7:00, 150

5. 6:57, 154

6. 6:48, 156

7. 6:41, 161

8. 6:41, 162

9. 7:42, 146 (stopped back home for more water during this mile explaining the big HR drop)

10. 8:09, 140

Around 6:50 is where I want my LT runs, so I'm happy.

I'm loving my new Garmin. With my 305 I had never used Garmin Connect before but after two runs, I've found analyzing the pace and heart rate graphs interesting. Perhaps it's a novelty that will wear off but I have a have a feeling that my infrequent runs on treadmills will become even more rare.

Anybody have any experience with Under Armor coldgear? I've been trying to prep for the upcoming winter with these sales, all this stuff the same? One brand better than another?
I use it pretty much exclusively during the winter. Sure, you can spend less for knockoffs, but the UA stuff works great, and if you take care of it, it lasts forever.
:goodposting: It is very light and even as much as I sweat it's not difficult to disrobe after I'm done. The problems I have with the knockoffs is the effect on my skin. Have to peel it off and then have red splotches everywhere for anywhere from 1 to 24 hours.

I know it's not for everyone but there are a few of you, like myself, that have essentially become vampire runners. I pretty much won't go out in the sun right now until it starts getting cooler. Just can't handle it.
I run so much faster and feel so much better at night, the problem is by the time I get done, cool down, eat, and shower it's usually after midnight. Usually screws up my next day.

damn 114 here today.I did my 5 miles on the treadmill.
I will never ##### about the temps here again.Easy couple of days, 3.25 today as I ran to the border. I live real close to the border of NC but the road to the border isn't exactly runner friendly and I've actually been concentrating on training so today was a fun day. Now I can say I ran in two states on one run. Tomorrow the same, 3 easy miles than off Friday in prep for Saturday's big test. Not running in a race but planning on doing a half (that's 13.1 stupid) for time. Hoping the weather holds up.

Finally getting a break in the weather here:

Today: High 64, low 55

Friday: 73, 50

Sat: 75, 56

Sun: 77, 61

Mon: 78, 60

This is good, because I'm going 10 today, then 16, rest, and 14 the thru the weekend. I'll total 68 for the week.

Do you have a particular race scheduled this fall? You're not on the spreadsheet and I've forgotten.

I'm doing my 16 before work, too. I'm looking at 59/55. Can't wait. :excited:

Not right now but I'm seriously kicking around a couple of halfs in October & November. That brings me to my next dilema, since I wasn't really planning on racing and just took up the training program for something to do and to structure my running some it leaves me with an awkward gap between now and late Oct and late Nov. Roughly 12 weeks since I plan on taking at least a week off after Saturday so where does that leave me for training? When I start back up do I pick a program and start in the 3rd or 4th week or do I just kinda wing it? Interested in any input.Weather was glorious this morning 68/67! Easy 3 to get the blood pumping

Just sign up for one already! You won't lose any significant amount of fitness by taking a week off and you've trained enough already to run a half. Picking up a schedule in the middle won't be bad since you're in the shape to do that. Winging it would work fine to -- you're not trying to break any records (this time at least!).

You can put me down as definitely interested. If my schedule works out I would love to do that. There is usually a planned event that we always attend that weekend, but if free, I am in.
What would possibly be more important than this???
Nah, not serious just stating facts. I would love to meet up with everyone again. I had such a blast the first time, it would be hard to pass it up again. I mean who wouldn't want to pass up the opportunity of riding around in a smelly van with 6 sweaty guys. Put that way, it sounds awful

Do you have a particular race scheduled this fall? You're not on the spreadsheet and I've forgotten.
Beer - I am not sure where you live in SC, but there is a nice 1/2 in Greenville on October 24. I ran it 2 years ago and there were over 1,000 people.I am running the full marathon this year and there are almost 500 signed up.I have 2 1/2 marathons under my belt (1:57:00 and 1:54:11) and I hoping to complete the full in 4 hours on October 24.I have been training for 6 weeks. My long run so far is 14 with an average of 10:00 (just about 10% below MP).I did 7 yesterday at 9:11 (this was supposed to be MP, but I came up a little slow).

Fort Mill, SC. Was considering the one in Myrtle Beach in October, there is always a contingent from church that goes down. November is a lock for the Thunder Road 1/2.Jux - I know right? Worse than a damn woman!

damn 114 here today.I did my 5 miles on the treadmill.

Not sure if I am on the spread sheet. I have two coming up.9/3/12 TMC Saguaro National Park Labor Day 8-Miler10/21/12 TMC Get Moving Tucson Event: A-Mountain Half-Marathon

up at 4 and out the door for 14 this morning.

75/70 to start, 74/71 and rainy by the end.

The rain was refreshing...but still was a warm feeling start to this one...I think I was already pretty soaked by the time the rain started.

Pretty simple 10:27/151 day. Didn't feel great...didn't feel bad. Just one of those I got through.

Now to rest up before the Tap n Run Beer 4k tomorrow. This Hogan muscle costume + cape and maybe a top hat is going to be freaking hotter than crap by 5 tomorrow night when this thing starts. Oh, and tall red socks with the bottoms cut out pulled over my shoes to look like wrestling boots.

Though, Im going to have a few in me, so who cares?

SDO today, but I have to get up early tomorrow to do 14 in before work (I have a meeting in the morning). I'm looking at something like 53/51, for a sub-110 suck index. Looking forward to it.
So how did it go??

Kinda doubt I'd be able to get past the name....

Nice job on the 14, and have fun tomorrow! -----------------

My 10-miler yesterday afternoon got rained out, so I think I'm gonna make up for it by doing a Ragnar-esque 16/10 double today. Headed out around 5:30 this morning for the 16-miler with refreshingly comfortable suck index of only 111 (57/54). Started easy and finished a little faster, splitting 65:61/63:30 for an overall average pace of 8:06/mile and running the last mile the fastest at 7:37.

Assuming the legs aren't totally dead, I'll do an extremely easy 10-miler this afternoon so that tomorrow can be a total rest day.

As expected, this morning's weather was great -- overcast, light breeze, and temps in the low 50s. Since I knew it was going to be nice, I slept in a little and didn't get out until 6:00. 14 miles @ 9:44/mi felt super-easy, and I'm sitting here now feeling like I didn't even run at all. Of course, next week has 57 miles on the schedule, including a 22-miler and the 11/7 tempo run that everybody seems to love, so I'm sure that feeling of fatigue will come back.

Only thing worse than 11/7T is the "dreaded" 12/7T. Have fun with that.

Haha. Thanks. Might have to do 10.2 tonight just so I can say I ran a full marathon distance. ;)

I had a short 4 mile run today to get ready for 14 on Sunday.

The goal was to keep my heart rate about 155 and not look at the time at all.

I finished averaging 8:34 / 152 heart rate.

Even though that is faster than my 9:00 MP, I was expecting it to be even faster.

I can. And then immediately discard the thought. :PLooks like this weekend might be a lucky day for racing. We're getting a cold front coming through and tomorrow morning will be 65F/80RH instead of the 75/95RH that we've been getting. Suck index for the morning down from 150+ to 120. That's a huge difference.

Since this will be your first marathon, don't worry about speed so much. You can build your endurance fine by long slow runs. You'll probably be fine Sunday at slightly over 10:00 pace.

Agreed. Good to see your HR training - why guess? Let the HR give you objective data about how you're doing.Sand - glad to hear the weather settled down a little bit. Do well!!!

I finally got an HRM and a GPS Watch thing (MOTOACTV). So, can anyone point me to a link with good info on starting Heart Rate Training? I am currently in the midst of training for San Jose Rock & Roll, but after that I want to train for the Hollywood HM by doing Heart Rate. Any link(s) or advice would be great.

I searched the thread, but you guys talk about Heart Rate a lot, and I am hoping for a few outside web pages to get me started.

I'll bet Ned might be able to find a site or two about this.

:goodposting: I'll add that use the HR if you know your correct training zones. If you're just guessing at the HR, it's no better than guessing at the pace times.
