Hey gents. I know some have posted this previously, but if you were gonna buy a pair of shoes on line, where would you get them?

I know what kind I want, size, etc. I'm just trying to stock up on what I have. Any risk with just finding them on ebay? Or which online retailer do you purchase from?

Thanks!

Did that with the New Balance shoes I have. Got them at Joe's New Balance Outlet. Long as you know what you want I think you'd be fine

Endless.com has good coupons and good cashback from Fatwallet and other places.

I could use some help with time. Since soccer started in late August (I coach a high school JV team), I have basically went from 2-3 runs in the beginning of the season to not running at all in the last week and a half. I am having a very tough time finding time to run. Its not that I am not motivated, I just seem to have too much going on. I can wake up earlier but I really dont like the idea of running the streets at 5 in the morning. Its dark and while I live in a pretty good hood, anyone can look at their phone for a second and not see a runner. It is pitch black at that time. What do you guys do when you just cant seem to find the time. It is getting dark so early now that by the time I get home from practice/games, my window is closing quick. I dont want to ruin all the work I put in already
I'll substitute - maybe a day of squats/lunges ...a day of yoga ...find a stairwell and run some reps.

Honestly, assuming you don't have sidewalks, just run against traffic and wear bright, reflective shirt and a headlamp. Run defensively, basically expecting that every car is going to hit you, and you'll be fine.

Amazon or runningwarehouse are usually tough to beat.

I just had good luck with eBay. I wanted a back up pair of Brooks Casscadias for this past weekend's trail event that I could give to my son to use after. I searched periodically for them and scored a pair for $40 that look like they are new out of the box. I wouldn't try something new, only a shoe I've worn and know will fit right.

12 easy this morning at like 8:20/mile. Running 26 (point two) in the morning, then big breakfast, nap, and boozing it up all afternoon/evening at Appleton's Octoberfest. :banned:

Might add a super duper easy 5-mile recovery run on Sunday just to get me to 80 miles for the week.

Ran a tough 10 miles this am at 8:50 pace. Having a recurrence of some back/hip pain so I'm focused on stretching before and after my runs.

13 miles at 10:04 pace this morning. MUCH better then last weeks poor showing. It was beautiful out. I was out by 4:30 and got to watch the moon set as the sun came up. No stray horses or dogs this morning.

I have 138.61 miles for this month and that is a new personal record for me.

Workhorse I agree with beer that blog is fantastic, thanks for sharing.

Monday: 9 GA

Tuesday: 5 recovery

Wednesday: 11 miles (5 GA w/6 LT miles)

Thursday: 5 recovery

Friday: Rest

Saturday: 20 miles (18 @ 10:25/147...was going to quit there, but my son wanted to run with me to prepare for the color run 5k...so we did 2 miles at 11min/mi)

Now will get a couple of good runs in Monday and Wednesday before starting about a week and a half of recovery for fall break/Disney trip.

Great run and a very nice month...always great hitting those personal records.

Another 26.2 miles today at 8:23/mile. My fourth run of at least 23.5 miles in the last 12 days. Taper for the 50K starts now.

Time for Octoberfest....let the rehydrating begin! :suds:

Seriously man, we are simpatico. Ran 13 this morning @ 10:16 pace, put me at 162 for the month :suds: Update for the week:

Mon - 3 miles @ 9:40 pace. Just one of those blah days, logging some miles before I hit the gym

Tue - 8 miles @ 9:32 pace. Was trying hard to beat the 9:29 pace from Saturday. Halfway point was at 9:22 and thinking I had a shot, then I remembered it was all downhill going out. Not to be.

Wed - 4 miles @ 9:53 pace. Recovery miles before the gym, lather, rinse, repeat.

Thur - 10 miles @ 9:57 pace. 6 mile tempo run sandwiched in between 2 miles warmup & 2 cooldown. 6 mile tempo pace was, wait for it. . .9:36. I think I'm seeing a pattern. . . Since Friday is an off day and the wife & kids were out for dinner decided to do 3 junk miles after work, 9:49 pace. First mile was way too fast, last two I dogged it.

Fri - SDO

Sat - 13 miles @ 10:16 pace. Just running to run. Checking out a new route for a potential LR in a few weeks. Hilly as hell but happy with the pace and how I felt after.

Sun - SDO

September was a big month for me. Set all PR's for weekly/monthly distance as well as the longest run I've done. This running stuff is addictive ;)

Jux, you'll be happy to hear I have two races coming up, next weekend and the following (both 5k's but a race is a race, right).

 When you finish you'll tell yourself, "Why didn't I do this sooner?" I think you'll surprise yourself with a time that exceeds your expectations. Make sure to get some rest this week. For me, just finished a relatively easy 12 miler. Last longish run before the marathon next Sunday. Forecast is now in the 40s with no rain and little wind. :knockonwood:

Got my last 12 miler out the way earlier today. My legs actually felt almost numb at the beginning -- it took me a second, but I finally realized "Oh yeah, that's what your legs feel like when they're not stiff and sore from training." Super-easy run. Nothing of any substance on tap for next week, other than 26.2 at marathon pace.

It looks like rain is out of the forecast for you too. What's your PR again?

3:58:something. If the forecast holds, everything is looking perfect for next Sunday.

Me thinks you'll be coming in just a smidge under 3:58. Go get'm! :excited:

This is going to be pathetic compared to some of you for a long, LONG time, but...

4 miles today; ran the top of my hill, which is a flat-ish .8 mile loop. Ran the first .8 at about 11:30 pace, then stretched and did four laps for a 5K. 5K at 10:05 pace. That is my current 5K racing pace, because I ran in HR between 160 and 175 for basically the whole thing, and ended completely out of breath.

My plans are: hike tomorrow morning with my wife, then a 60% effort 10K Monday morning.

saw an article about the bourbon chase going on this weekend and thought of this thread!!!

i'm having the same issues as acer trying to find time to run...sucks with the weather as perfect as it has been for the past couple of weeks.

You've got a great baseline now. Keep training!Prosopis - awesome month for you!

gruecd - super impressive stuff!

Looking forward to race reports.

I'm down in Dallas for a seminar (doctoral residency) ...got a couple of runs ins - good 8 mile tempo run on Thursday; 5 miles this a.m. with some hard (sub-5K pace) half-miles. Also got in a 15 minute swim in the hotel pool during a rainstorm yesterday afternoon.

grue - Your legendary 'machine' status lives on. Fantastic stuff, man. What's the goal for the 50K?

prosopis, shonuff - Good work, guys.

beer - Congrats on the PR month. I'd suggest going back and re-reading BnB's post from a couple of weeks back. Your tempo and long run paces are too tight. Be careful, GB.

Misc - Totally agree with Sand. Give yourself some time and do a ton of long, slow (conversational pace) runs and you'll see a huge difference come spring time. Consistent/smart training will pay off big.

Week 11 of Pfitz 18/70 is in the books. Turned out to be a pretty up/down week.

Tue (10mi recovery - 6/4 double): Run 1 @ 6am 10:00/131. Run 2 @ noon 9:58/134. Smooth as silk.

Wed (15mi MLR): This turned out to be the worst run of the cycle. I already posted the details, but I have no doubt it was the flu shot I got on Monday. Just felt like complete garbage. 9:33/147

Thur (6mi recovery): Still feeling like crap, but not as sore/achy. 75/62 suckex wasn't helping matters much. 10:06/133

Fri (12mi w/ 7LT): I was nervous as heck about this run. Still kinda sore, but feeling better. It was 73/65 which was very muggy for this time of year. Squishy shoes made a reappearance at mi 6. Overall the LT miles were OK, but I defintely wasn't feeling my usual self. I'll take it given the circumstances. LT miles were 7:39/176 (177-178 is LT for me - just squeaked in).

Sat (5mi recovery): Finally, some relief. Soreness is all but gone and the weather broke (59/52). Felt very good today. 9:53/131

Sun (22mi LR): Oh yeah, baby. I'm back. Miles melted away effortlessly. It was a gorgeous morning (58/52). Left quad is annoyingly sore (maybe a 2 on scale of 1-10), but didn't bother the pacing any. About as quiet as 22mi could ever get. 9:16/142. That was the fastest and lowest HR I've ever had for any 20+ mi run. Last year my HR avg was 155 for my 20 milers. If I only knew then...

That put me at 70.4mi for the week and 276.6 for September. Both distance PRs, easily. On to a semi-taper week leading up to my first tune-up race next Sunday (15K). Can't friggin' wait.

Good luck in the 15K next weekend! I just added up my monthly milage, and I ended up with 296.3. I've never had a 300-mile month. Might have to head back out there tonight... ;)
grue - Your legendary 'machine' status lives on. Fantastic stuff, man. What's the goal for the 50K?
First goal is not to crack my head open. Lots of rocks and roots out there, and the course is gonna be covered by leaves. It's a virtual guarantee that I'll fall at least a couple of times.I've never run an ultra, so I probably should focus on just finishing, but I'd love to go under 5 hours. That would have put me top-15 last year, but I know it was pretty warm out. My "A" goal is to finish top-10. Gonna try to hit the turnaround in 2:30 and then let 'er rip in the second half and see how many people I can pick off.

18:50! :excited: :boxing:

4th overall, 1st in age group - hung with the lead group until the final 1/2 mile as breathing/cardio expectedly slowed me down. Made a final sprint to try to catch 2nd and 3rd but came 3 and 6 seconds short.

Hit mile 1 at 5:35 and mile 2 at 11:30, very happy about today and may try to make my run at 18 flat in 4-6 weeks. Catch up with the rest of you later, football now...

I need to talk to you. Had a crazy seed planted to run 50 at 50. Friend of mine just finished 51.6 yesterday. Very impressive stuff

Bourbon Chase 2012 RR

Hey all, just thought I would pop in to give a quick Race Report for this year's Bourbon Chase.

Weather was looking to be pretty good with clear skies and a cool Friday evening. We met around 10 on Friday and headed down. On the way down we got off to an awful start and had to replace the battery in the car we were using. Not a good start, but we figured that if that was the worst that would happen we would be pretty good to go.

Start was at 2:15 so we still got down there in plenty of time for the first runner to warm up and for us to hang out and enjoy the Jim Beam distillery a bit.

2:15PM on the dot the gun went off and were off and running for the 2012 Chase. Being in van 2 we headed to Maker's Mark Distilery and waited there about 5 hours until we were ready to start our legs.

We started our legs at about 6:30PM on Friday as the first van was flying out of the gate. Around 10 or so was my first leg of 5.8 miles. I went out pretty fast and ended up completing them with an average of 7:25. I handed off to runner 11 and got a bit of a break.

After Van 2 finished our 1st legs as a team we were about 45 minutes ahead of our estimated time. We were really moving better than expected. The weather was helping a lot as it was cool, but foggy. We hit a few patches of heavy rain about this time, but nothing too long that made things really miserable.

We drove to Danville to get a little rest and something to eat. The local high school opens there doors for sleeping on the gym floor, food/gatorade/water, and a hot shower all for $5. Even though I could not sleep (hard gym floor and inconsiderate people) I was really refreshed by the shower and at about 2:30 we were on the road again to meet up with next van for our hand off.

We kicked off our second set of legs at about 3:45AM on Saturday morning. Things were going well for me until the 2nd leg of this set when i had one of the worst experiences of my life. 2 legs before I had to run again I needed to go to the bathroom. I found the porta-lets and climbed on in. Without realizing it because it was dark, I sat down to do my business and finished. As I was finishing up, I realized that someone before me had "hovered" and shat on the seat of the bathroom. I did not see it when I went in and it was everywhere. It took me like 15 minutes to clean up in the john and then had to go back to the van and use some baby wipes to try and get the rest off. I was not a happy camper. The previous hot shower refresher was a distant memory now.

So about an hour and a half after that fun, I was ready to run my 2nd leg. I started off strong again and surprisingly did not wear out at all and finished this leg of 5.1 averaging 7:21 per mile. I was pretty tired after this one and without any sleep yet knew the 3rd and final leg was going to be a big challenge.

Nothing else eventful happened. After this second leg I did get to wash up completely a bit with cold water out of our water cooler and some soap, but nothing to the extent of feeling really clean. Even though this happened at a McDonald's, I felt most cofortable admist the rest of the local crowd there that morning.

We went to Woodford Reserve and waited for the final van exchange and for us to start our last set of legs. I think we were all able to get about an hours sleep here. Not enough to feel refreshed, but at least it was something.

And then we were off and running again. This was about 10:30PM again and we were all dragging looking forward to getting our last legs completed.

I started my toughes and final leg around 1:30PM on Saturday and as soon as I started knew I had nothing left in my legs, but was determined to finish without walking at all. This plan worked even though I was going pretty slow, this leg was nothing but rolling hills some big and some small. All of them felt pretty big to my legs. The only relief that I got was around mile 5 when I come upon a group of people and they asked if I wanted a beer or a water. I had to tell them I would take the water as I the beer at that time would have probably made me puke right in front of them and I wanted to be a little curteous at least. It was good for a really good laugh by all of us and then I was quickly off again and continued on to the finish. Right after the offer of beer there is a pretty good uphill climb and then 8 rolling hills to the finish. This was a butt kicker no doubt. At the finish, the last hundred yards or so a girl passed me and said "Good job". I am not sure what happened, but at that point I realized that I had not been chicked all weekend and I was not going to let it happen on my last bit of my last run. I sped up and passed her and then she started to sprint to the finish as well. I ended up giving one last kick to cut her off at the end and save face for the weekend. Congratulated her on such a strong finish and was able to have a good laugh with her after it was over.

That leg was 8.2 miles and I averaged 9:00 even for those.

Overall, it was another good experience and everyone ran great. I think we eneded up 37th out of 287 overall and 14th of 50 in the open Male division. Overall time was 26:22 which if I am not mistaken was almost an hour better than last years, but we had much better weather this year and we of course did not drink before hand either which made a difference.

Anyone who has not done one of these relay events should try and do at least one. They are such a challenge and getting the rest/nutrition down is very tough to do. Plus if you do it with great friends you can make some really good memories for ever. Both years this has been the case and makes the experience most enjoyable.

Special thanks to Sand for hooking me up with all his documents from last year. Really made things go smoothly for all of us.

 Glad you guys had a great time. May have to think about doing this next year. Good job on that last leg - that thing was brutal beyond all imagination. Just not walking last year had me passing a ton of people.
