Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Sorry to hear it Ned...and definitely the right move in not doing the 15k...you did not bust your butt for this long to run a 15k tune up.

and good to hear the calf is doing better Juxt.

I will be thinking of all of you all this week as I walk no telling how many miles pushing a stroller around the parks and stuffing myself at Ohana :) .

Not that I have any experience with anything close to the mileage you've been putting up, but my money is that this is mainly taper-related. I'm looking forward to seeing how the 50K goes. This is trail even, right?
Yep, it's 100% trail. Rocky, rooty, hilly, leaf-covered technical trail. And now the forecast is calling for rain, which should make things super interesting....
Or in other words, PERFECT!!!! :excited:
It'll be fun. I just hope that when I fall, the ground is either flat or uphill. Slip on some wet leaves on one of those downhills, and it could be a looooong fall....

I hate even typing this, but I'm downgraded to Questionable. :hot:

Pretty similar story to Jux... Left quad was annoying me last week, but wasn't anything to slow me down (maybe a 2 on a 1-10 scale). I've run through worse things before, so I just kept cruisin' along with it in the back of my mind. I felt it at the beginning of Sunday's 22 but it quickly went away. FF to yesterday's 10mi GA and I feel it again - achy/sore - right in the middle of my quad. It went away around mile 2 and was fine. However this time, it came back and was sore the rest of the day yesterday. This morning I can still feel it, although not quite as sore as yesterday.

I can run through a lot, but this one just feels different and has me spooked. Enough that I'm bagging my 2 recovery runs for today/tomorrow. I'll test it out on Sunday morning during my 2mi warmup. If anything feels wrong, I'm tapping out. As bad as I want to race this 15K, I need to keep my eye on the end goal.
I'm sorry to read this. It's much different for me than for you. If I do more damage, it really doesn't matter. I have almost 3 months before I start training for Boston. You, on the other hand, have more important runs on the horizon. Hopefully you recover quickly, though. My calf is certainly better today. RICE helped. It's no longer tender to the touch although I still feel it walking. I'll do more RICE today and tomorrow. I think I'll pick up a pair of compression sleeves at the Expo. I'm running Sunday no matter what.
Good to hear the calf is a little better. I'm a huge believer in compression. I actually just ordered compression pants to help with the quad. The sleeves are miracle workers on my finicky calves. I could just be overly paranoid about this, but I'm not going to take it lightly since it feels so different. We'll see how it feels on the warmup run. The odd thing is it doesn't hurt to the touch at all. I can dig into my quad and not feel a thing. Hell getting down with the foam roller didn't hurt. I only feel it walking and don't feel it at all going up steps. We'll see.

I've got 6 weeks to go, so in the grand scheme of things its better this is happening now. Still pisses me off though.

This is what's so awesome about trail races. They're a lot more than just who's the fastest runner. You gotta be pretty fleet of foot to run any legitimate trail race fast. Don't forget to look ahead!

what is the purpose of the bands people wear around their knees?

when do folks start introducing water/gel packs to their runs? 10+ miles? 15+?
Hey, furley, how about sticking around and contributing something for a change instead of just popping in when you need something?? ;)
not much to contribute. i'm not a super runner, haven't tucked a double triathlon under my belt yet. running regularly. got a 5 mile race coming up next weekend. my short-term goal is 10 miles. that's about it

And you had me at "running regularly." Good luck with the race! Let us know how it goes for you.As noted, the heat will affect the need for water. On training runs, I won't worry about a gel unless it's maybe 14-15 miles or more.

gruecd - hilarious post. I loved the crap they gave to Vick.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Can't wait to see all the PRs

Sorry to hear about the injury, Ned, but I'll echo what everyone else said that you're doing the right thing.

As for my training, I finished off last week at 38.1 miles and so far this week I'm at 25 miles with Sat and Sunday to go. Hoping to get 16-20 miles in those 2 days. I still feel generally tight and pretty lousy since my half marathon. I told a buddy I feel like the tin man carrying a 50 pound bag of crap on runs. My legs and hips especially aren't in pain per se in that they don't keep me from running, but they take awhile to get going. Hence the tin man reference because it feels like I need to oil up the joints before I get going. If I wasn't already signed up for Manchester RR on Thanksgiving, I'd probably call it a good season getting some good 5ks a decent 10k in and my first half and I'd take 7-10 days totally off. I'm surprised that I am still kind of recovering from a Half nearly 3 weeks ago but not having ideal mileage training going into the half is probably why.

My runs have been mostly 5-8 miles lately and I keep waiting to feel good but it's tough everyday. Oh and I did do some modest speed on Tuesday that only felt ok also. It wasn't that fast...I ran with the group lower in ability than I normally do and I only did 5 of the 6 800s they did, but that could also be making these runs tough.

I certainly understand the Tin man reference, Koby. I always am amazed how I feel better mentally and physically during miles 5 through 10 than the first 5.

Everything you're saying is everything I endured while I was miles building this summer, can't diagnose from afar but I really think you're over trained. During the 'peak' of my training this summer I ran a 19:25 5k, I say 'peak' because this is when I should have been taking off and instead I started sliding down the cliff. I probably felt my best 2-3 weeks prior (when I thought I could chase 18 flat) and I never really got my legs back until I took the time off last month. I had a couple of decent runs but they were few and far between. After I rested and got a few light jogs and one hard run back under me - boom, 18:50 5k. Not saying bag the Thanksgiving race, but veering from your plan may be the right move. You probably won't run the race as fast as you wanted or if you hadn't over trained, but you'll probably run it faster than you will if you keep going as is.

Holy crap, you guys. Check this out: http://imgur.com/a/9H0Hv

Thanks for the laugh, man. Today has been the hardest day of my life, and this really hit the spot for a little breather.Acer - sorry no response, bro. Things haven't been good my way and I haven't had time to look into your message.

On a side note I did run 4 miles yesterday (with a whole 10 ft. of climbing up one levee). Being able to just go out and run is a good way to just go out and think about nothing for a bit. Nice to have that capability.

Whatever it is, JC, my thoughts are with you. You're a great guy with a consistently positive spirit. For you to be struggling with something really concerns me. I'll 'Sand' the start tomorrow in your honor. Hang in there, my friend. Be careful with those climbs!

Hope you get to a better place Sand. No worries about my question.

My first duathlon on Sunday. Instead of buying a 1500 or even a 500 dollar bike, I rented one for 50 bucks. Turned out to be a Cannondale which retails for 1400. Took it around the block, can't even believe I almost used a mountain bike.

Sunday will be interesting.

Not trying to be obtuse. My mother passed earlier this week and we put her to rest today. I have lots of family around, so all is well. Just a hard, hard day.Did a 5 mile run at dusk on the levee tonight. Beautiful night - the bridge was lit up, the New Orleans skyline was awesome, tugs and ships on the water, etc. Almost enough to ignore the 120% humidity.

#### dude.I'm not going to pretend that I can post something here that will make you better. If she was as good of a spirit as you are she will be much missed in this world. Not trying to be obtuse. Sorry to hear that Sand, my thoughts will be with you. It's never easy to lose a loved one let alone a parent. Stay strong man, we're all here for you.

I'm sorry , Sand. :(

I still felt pain in my calf this morning, so instead of stressing and RICEing, I decided to test it out on a quick 2 mile run. Pain was tolerable. I don't think it's going to hold me back so I'm good to go. I'm still going to buy some calf sleeves even if they primary serve as a security blanket and a pair of leg warmers.

Just got back from the Race For the Cure 5k. Had two objectives, well three I guess. Finally get in a race so Juxtatarot will get off my case ;) , break 27 for a 5k and not get chic'd by stroller dude. Got there stupid early because, well that's what I do so I had about an hour to kill but some of that time was going to be used up running to the site as I parked about 1 1/2 miles away. So ran over to warm up, finally met up with the folks who had my tag and went to the start. When I first got there, there were people milling about and frankly I was in my own little world so I never realy looked behind me, just wanted to make sure I was up close to the front because of the number of people running. 2 minutes before start I was where I wanted to be and decided to turn around to get a picture for posterity

I think most of them passed me. I got smoked by chics, kids, old, young, black, white, yellow, pink and with 20 yards left at the finish. . .stroller dude. Probably the biggest disappointment of the day but happy with the finish nonetheless, ran 26:09 unofficially with a 8:28 pace. I think the chip time will be closer to 26:13 but still a lot faster than I thought I could run. As I was rounding the 2 mile mark the cops said the leaders had just crossed the finished  I'll be interested to see the final times, those guys were moving.

Oh, more importantly I drove the 1/2 marathon course coming up in November: http://runkeeper.com/user/ronnash/activity/123011991. I'm not sure who the ******* is that thought this one up but he can go straight hell. Some of those hills are stupid and they are back-to-back-to-back-to-back. I was seriously going to start doing some speed training during the week but think I'm just going to run hills from now until November.

Edit to add, chip time was 26:05 and as it turned out I tied stroller dude so I'm going to count that as a push (plus he's 21 years younger than me) Finished 409th out of 3,051, 23rd out of 151 in my age group.

Congrats, Beer! Nice way for us to start off the weekend. I knew you would run faster than anticipated -- that's the adrenaline and benefits of rest working for you. Next time, just don't start out in front! ;)

Congrats beer!!! that is pretty fast.

pmbrown- nice report and I am glad you guys had fun. That porta potti thing was disgusting though :X Just wrong.Lots of races coming up in here and I am excited to read the results.I did 7 miles at 9:49 pace today.Quick question here. I am scheduled to do a 7 mile pace (9:22) run Friday. I am then scheduled to do 14 miles @ aprox 10:20 pace Saturday. The last time I did this it was not good. There were other factors like a horse, HR monitor slipping, dog, fuel belt slipping etc but at the end I did not do the 13 miles scheduled after the 7 mile pace. At the time I blamed the poor showing on the previous days pace run.Do I chalk that experience as an anomaly and follow plan as scheduled or do the pace run Thursday, rest Friday, long 14 miles sat?I am in the final 3 weeks of Higdons intermediate half marathon program. I tweaked it by adding 2 miles to all runs not a long run and I added 3 miles to the long runs. It has worked well up to that hick up.
Follow the plan. There's a method to the madness.
Good call here by Grue. Yesterday I did my 7 mile pace @ 9:22 and my 14 miles at 10:04 this morning. It went well, I am thinking my bad Saturday 2 wks ago was just an anomaly and to much went wrong that day which added up to the fail. I am feeling pretty good. I have one more week of training and then a week of taper.A Mountain 1/2 is on 10/21/12. :boxing:

Prairie State Half Marathon Race Report

Oh, my. That was shockingly successful! I thought I was SandingTM the first mile; in fact, I Sanded the entire race.

1:31:32 .. 6:59/mile* ..avg HR - 170

1st of 23 in AG (by 8 minutes); 27 of 691 overall

I was a little unsure of the event heading into it. I've been so busy lately, and when things let up a bit on Thursday, my body just crashed midway through the morning. I was still a little 'off' on Friday, but I slept well and this morning's routines were fine. I drove 45 minutes north to the course in plenty of time. "No excuse weather" - the sun rising to the east, a sharp breeze coming out of the west (north/south course), and crisp, cool weather. I got my swag and bib and did some warmup running. After a last, quick, pitstop, I stepped into line 2 minutes before the start. Other than the first and last mile, the course was on a tightly packed, gravel path through woods and fields. It was ideal with very little elevation change. It was an out and back course. They were very smart at the start to have a tight shoot. It slowed the field getting on the course, but nothing was backed up once we started.

Mile 1: 6:59 ..159 HR

Mile 2: 7:03 ..164

Mile 3: 7:05 ..164

Mile 4: 7:09 ..166

Mile 5: 6:58 ..167

Mile 6: 6:58 ..170

Mile 7: 6:58 ..172

Mile 8: 7:03 ..173

Mile 9: 7:07 ..174

Mile 10: 7:03 ..175

Mile 11: 7:00 ..177

Mile 12: 7:14 ..178

Mile 13: 7:00 ..179

*I showed an average pace of 7:02. However, my distance registered as 13.0 miles. I was very deliberate about running the tangents as the course curved back and forth. :P

As the pace remained steady and HR under control, I ran with some measure of disbelief. In April, I had PRed this distance at 1:35. Today, I knocked off almost 4 minutes from that spring race! I kept thinking I was banking time, but as I got into the back half, I realized the times were holding steady. The field was rather spread out, but I did pass several runners over the back half. I ended up right behind (or alongside for the last mile) the #3 female over the last few miles and I think that helped us both to hold pace pretty well.

What clicked? I think the key, versus the spring race, has been the lighter, lower-heeled shoes (Asics DS Racers). It allows a better stride and puts less cumulative strain on the legs from lifting an extra 4 oz's every step (which I figure is about 500 lbs/mile). While training has been spotty, I had some strong, long runs a month ago, then raced a hard 5K and the 17 difficult miles of Dances With Dirt two weeks ago ..race your way into shape, right (2Young, I talked to a DWD runner after today's race ...comparing notes with her on f'n bridge, this sucks, stripper pole, and other legs). Anyway, what a thrill! I'm well aware that using the rule of thumb (HM x 2, plus 10 minutes), my 3:37 marathon time is probably soft. For now, I'll try to take this momentum into my featured 5K in two weeks.

Tri-man!  Fantastic!

About an hour ago I was wondering about you, so I googled your race and looked for your name. When I saw the time I had to do a double take...I thought "is that really him or someone with a similar name?!" I almost posted here but decided against writing a spoiler to your race report. Congrats on the AG victory and a great race. Certainly your best of the year. And, no, it's not the shoes. It's your just rewards for a year of dedication!

mix in a 9 year old taunting you, tack on a few  minutes and that's the story of my first 5k.oh and tri-man was there at the end encouraging me :wub:eta: fantastic time, btw.

:jawdrop: Hard to get my brain around would you pulled off Tri-Man. Congrats, that is impressive as hell. Looking at your schedule, I think a sub 20 5K would cap this season nicely.
