Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

Tomorrow is the Fall 50 relay, the same race that tri-man and I did back in 2008 ("word").

Next week is my back-to-back 30/20. I was gonna do it on the weekend, but I think I'm gonna take a half-day off work on Thursday and do it on Thursday and Friday afternoons instead. NOT looking forward to this, but hoping I can find some friends to run with me so it's less of a bore....
WORD. :P Enjoy the Fall 50!!!Hope the back-to-back goes well. PS: I'm on this weekend ...5K: Assault on sub-20.

DaGuru - hopefully you can shake that cold over the next 36 hours. :fingerscrossed:

Good luck to the other racers! Let's have another big weekend here!

This is unreal. I am all paid and ready to do my first half marathon this Sunday in Detroit. I felt a cold coming on a couple of days ago so I have not done anything since Monday, now it is almost full blown with congestion and sore throat. Did not sleep at all last night due to coughing all night. Don`t think I will be able to do anything before Sunday morning so i am worried about my conditioning and breathing. Everytime I take a deep breath I start coughing.I am still going to give it a go but I was feeling so good the last two weeks... this is very disappointing. Have not had a cold in years.
My wife's go-to is Zicam + Advil Cold & Sinus - I'm a big fan of DayQuil all day and NyQuil all night.

This has happened every marathon for me. I'm not sure if its nerves or just a beaten down immune system. Regardless, don't worry about running. Just rest. Drink loads of water. Do your best to get to 100% and then go rock that HM.

I wish my good luck to the racers too!

Stupid me decided to test out my calf on a five mile run earlier this week and I must have tweeked the strain again. Very frustrating. Running can be so addictive. I'm starting to feel out of shape even though rationally I know it takes longer than this for that to happen.

This happened to me just about every time I ran Detroit. I think its the time of the year, with fall allergies and change in the weather coupled with the first round of colds making their way around the office and school. Plus tapering makes the body feel like ###. Good news for you is that the #### weather we are supposed to get today into tomorrow will be gone and the weather is looking outstanding for Sunday. Get a good night sleep tonight and a big nap tomorrow and I think you'll be good to go.

I'll be cheering on my boy tomorrow morning as he goes for the same thing (it'll be his first sub 20 if he gets it). Fingers crossed for you both. I asked if he'd like mile splits during the race to help get his there and he let me know he would. He blew up a bit going for sub 20 earlier this week, running his first mile in 6:04 before dropping off in the second mile and dying on the way in to a 20:36 (still got him the first freshman across the line on a tough course). I am going to sprint to each mile marker to let him know his pace and what he needs to do to get to sub 20. I, being me, had the splits listed down to the 1/2 miles and marked the spots on the course, be he thought this was overkill.

Oh, Ned & prosopis (and anyone else not on the race calendar) - GOOD LUCK this weekend!!!!
:goodposting: Im on the calendar...but an untimed fun "race" the Color Run with my son on Sunday (and running with a lot of the same group I did the Country Music Half with to raise money).

Little 5k going to take it like a recovery run with him after going 18-20 tomorrow.

On another note...was out at the Nike outlet and looking for shoes just to wear around and found some Lunarglides...almost bought these to run in last spring...they are clearanced at the outlet for $36. Thinking of going back to buy another few pair to put back for after the marathon to try out. At that price...hard to beat it.

Also found a few tanks and singlets for $5 on clearance.

My wife is running the Detroit half this week too. I am jealous because running over the bridge to Canada would be pretty cool(but also pretty difficult).I hope you feel better and good luck.

My chest congestion hasn't gone away yet, but I did 5 slow miles yesterday and it actually felt pretty good. Today though it turned into more of a cough than just congestion, and I felt miserable even at easy-recovery pace, so I cut it short after just 3. Hopefully next week will be better than this one.

Is it hard running while wearing Kevlar?

Be glad it wasn't a full marathon. It's relatively easy to find a "back up" half if that's the direction you have to go, especially this time of year.

Good luck to all of you racing this weekend, can't wait to see some updates!

After two weeks of a goofy schedule got back on track this week with some good training. Actually started last Saturday after the 5k, I put in 8 hilly miles afterward @ 9:39 pace. Saturday was a long day, kicked my ###.

MON - 4 recovery type miles, 9:50 pace, was hurting pretty good on Sunday and still residual soreness Monday so took it easy but still hit the hills behind my house. Hit the gym after

TUE - 11.25 miles, 9:53 pace. Just putting miles on and hitting a few hills which slowed the pace down. The was a pretty god size hill on this one I wanted hit and pushed hard through it then backed off the last two miles home. Really hadn't planned to go this far was looking to do 10 but you can't really throw in the towel a mile+ from home.

WED - 3 recovery miles, 10:15 pace. Just worked out the soreness.

THU - 10 miles with 6 @ 9:21 tempo pace. Again hitting the hills, felt good for the 6 because it coincided almost perfectly where the hills start, felt good after this run. Would love to get that down to 9ish before the 1/2 marathon Nov 17th, we'll see.

FRI - Took the day completely off, legs were tired and it was scheduled, I wasn't arguing.

SAT - 18 miles at 10:39 pace, HR didn't get above 147. Long run for the week, distance PR. Why? Because I wanted to see if I could mostly. No other reason. Been wanting to try it for a while but this was the first weekend I had open and it matches up nicely with the training schedule.

Good week of conditioning.

I haven't run since the trail marathon on Saturday. My quads were so trashed that it was Thursday before I could use the stairs again. Even just easy walks (which I did a few times each day) I had a hitch in my walk, particularly my right leg. But I'm feeling pretty good today, so going to head out this morning for just a couple of miles on the trails to make sure everything still works. Then, assuming success, will be back at it next week and picking up normal training again.

2nd 10 miler this week, on hour 2 of my 4 hour break before I do 12 mins at 90% mHR. The not eating in this period is brutal for a grazer like me, but all for science...or something. Very happy with my 33 miles this week, especially because I do not feel overly sore. Tired legs to be sure, but feel strong otherwise. Going to enjoy my off day Sunday and a short recovery run Monday.

Congrats on the distance PR! I see a full marathon in your future.

Today the cold and sore thoat are both worse and now I have a fever and was up all night again. I seriously have not had a cold like this in ten years or longer. My wife just said there is no way in hell you can run tommorow in the shape you are in. I have a bunch of friends also doing their first run so this is very disappointing..and considering the last month I have felt better and stronger than ever. I was lifting weights every moring and running/ power walking almost every night. Maybe I was over-training my body. I am still going to get up and see how I feel..maybe just go out there and go as long as I can and see what happens.

You will probably regret it if you don't try, if you go out there and fail you can at least say you gave it your best effort. May set you back a few days in recovery, but I'll bet you'll say 'it was worth it' if you at the very least give it a shot. Just try to go into it as optimistic as possible.

Ah man, sorry to hear this. Been following along hoping you we're turn the corner this week at some point but it appears you are just heading into the uphill climb against this thing. Always been a fear of mine, getting sick before an "event". I'm with MAC, head over (assuming you can even get out of bed) and if nothing else cheer your buds on.

Good advice. Also, if the race doesn't go well tomorrow, don't be shy about entering another half a few weeks from now. Your fitness isn't going anywhere, so you can get another shot at this.

I have a quiz for you married guys. Your wife is training for a December marathon. She just got back home from the first 20-miler of her training cycle. She says "I ran 42 miles this week!" Your response is:

[] "That's great, honey. I'm proud of you."

[] "Yeah, cutback weeks are awesome."

If you ever want happy fun time again...answer A.If your wife is a good sport and will see the fun in it...answer 2.Then realize, you are going to be wrong no matter what you say. :)

I feel for you. That sucks. I had this happen to me last year. I still did the half but it was miserable. Having said that I was glad I did it. Maybe just go do it as a long slow run with support?I know its not what you trained for but #### happens. Good luck.

Go with A

My ho hum "ease my way back into pfitz" week of training.

M - 7 GA miles (bout 9:55/146)

T - 5 recovery miles

W - 10 GA miles

TR- Rest

F - 5 recovery miles

S - 17 GA miles

S - 3.1/Color Run...nice and easy.

So a routine ease in week of 47 miles.

I picked up my number for the half tomorrow. I think I heard 2000 people are racing. I am pretty geeked for this.
What's the goal you have in mind?
Under 10:00 pace and I would be ecstatic near 9:30.I am doing another half in December and those numbers will be easier attained there but I am still going for it tomorrow. The A Mountain part is what worries me. I am not sure why but I am super nervous about this race. I cant wait to just be out there doing it.My current PB at a half is 9:59. That was my first half 3/2011.Right now I feel the best trained I have ever been. That may be why I am nervous.

Uncanny how much you & I are alike :unsure:Was talking to someone at work this week who asked me the same question and I said realistically about 9:30 for a goal. Good luck today man, you've put in the time now go kick some mountain ###!

I need to check in here more often.

Good luck to everyone running today, congrats to everyone who ran yesterday or is keeping themselves moving.

I'm only running "long" once a week now with organized PT during the week, so I'm making the one run count (Saturday is a rest-my-legs-day)

Last weekend: 10 miles, 70:02 (disappointed that I missed the sub 7 pace by 2.5 second)

Today - five x 2 Mile intervals with 2 minutes of walking/stretching between. Maintained between 13:14 and 13:59, an average interval 13:36 (or 6:48 pace). I'll take it for now.

First time I cracked double digits on a run in almost 4 months yesterday. Felt pretty good getting a ten mile trail run in. I probably ran a bit faster than I should (7:38 pace) but felt really strong. Hammy felt a bit sore at first but felt better as the run went along.

I'm considering attempting a 50k in December if I don't have any setbacks. :excited:

Ended up not going to the Free Press event. Pretty sure I am coming down with strep throat. Feeling like I do it did not make sense to even go walk it.

The good thing is that I have worked out hard for the last 3-4 months and in better shape than ever except for this ####### cold... when I get over this it will only take a week or so to get back where I was. I will look for another event in a month or so and give it a go.

Considering I have not been sick in years the timing of this really stinks! If it was the week after I could accept it better.

Sorry to hear you had to can it this morning!! Here are a few options for a replacement:Mid-Land 1/2 on 11/10 inexpensive, not too bad a drive and I seen positive posting on the group that hosts this series.

Its sold out, but if you recover quick and can find a way in, The Great Turtle on Mackinac Island is supposed to be incredible.

Looks like there is small charity 1/2 up north next weekend too.

A few more in Ohio. And Indiana.

Sorry to hear that but it sounds like the right thing to do. Like you sai, when you feel better, knock off the rust and hit the next event

Fall 50 went well. Like I said before, we really weren't running for time, so I decided to run my first leg hard and then just have fun with the rest. Leg #3 (7.52 miles) had some good-sized hills, but I managed to average 6:50 pace, including 6:16 pace for the last 1.52 miles.

Our van got stuck in a wet field at exchange #5, so we ended up doing some flip-flopping of legs. I ran #6 with my buddy so that I do #7 if our van didn't get there in time. My teammates did end up making it, but I decided to keep running anyway so that I'd be done. Averaged 7:20 for the combined 7.83 miles. Last couple miles were sub-7.

Overall, we finished the 50 miles in 6:30:23 (7:49/mile), good for 19th place out of 196 teams in the mixed open division. And I guarantee that we won the beer-drinking competition!

I made it with a new PB. I am waiting for official results but my Garmin has me at 2:01:08 with avg pace 9:12 :pickle:

I am ecstatic. Best race I have ever run. The mountain got me but I had sanded/banked time and I made time up coming down the mountain.

My goal was 9:30-10:00 avg pace

miles 1-5 were 9:03,8:58,8:48,8:49,9:00

In past I have always started in the back because I did not want to be the guy who held a fast runner up. I have learned that starting at the back sucks unless you are walking or just dont mind dodging people. Today I got close to the front. Not front but close. It helped tremendously. I was sanding and I had to reign myself in. I kept feeling like I was going to slow but the Garmin does not lie. I was holding back and thinking of trying to save for the mountain.

miles 6-7 9:26,11:30

Hello A Mountain. I hate that mountain. I was getting concerned here for sure. I was doing math in my head trying to calculate how bad this could be but still get the time I wanted. I did a walk run deal up the mountain. Lots of walkers here. This is a brutal climb. Last year I did the worst mile in over 13:00 so i did improve quite a bit. I was also sick last year and running with a chest cold. Like I said I was concerned but I thought the math was gonna work out.

miles 8-9 8:13,8:56 Good bye A Mountain. It would be real easy to lose all control running down this thing. I was using the down hill to make up for the up hill. It worked out pretty well but I did start to feel some blister pain. #### that I made the time up and I am winning. #### eating grin as I go down watching people walk wishing they were coming down :lmao:

miles 10-12 9:16, 9:05,9:08 I am really starting to work now. I was tired and my feet were killing me. Legs very sore now to. I question the up and down of A Mountain. I dont run hills and I am sure I used muscles that have not been used in previous runs. I keep thinking about my 15 miler I did last week and the 3 mos of really good training I had under my belt. Found a nice girl to follow for a bit and I was sad when I had to pass her.

mile 13 9:26 I am really hurting now. I wonder how big the blisters are. I have lost the ability to do the math but I feel I am ok. I want to stop and walk a bit but at the same time I did not want to blow my goal in the last mile. This last mile was a real struggle but I did not stop.

I saw that finish line and picked it up some. I have never felt so happy at the end of a race. I really surpassed my goal. I did not expect to get what I got today. I though I would get this in my December half. I have to rethink Decembers goal. Off the top of my head I would like to get under 2 hrs and I think that is with in reach.

Thanks to everyone in here for all you do.

Looking forward to hearing from Ned. I saw his pic on facebook and he destroyed his half :excited:

My official results are in 2:01:11 9:15

Awesome job prosopis!!!! I knew you'd nail it. You don't put in the kind of training you guys have been doing then bag a race. Well done, under 2 is the goal for December, just a question of how far under

Frank Lloyd Wright 5K Race Report

20:18 ..(6:33/mile) HR: 175

1st of 25 in AG

21st of 800 overall

Well, we got a sub-20:00 5K this weekend, but it was 2Young's son (congrats to him!). I was a bit nervous about this one and probably put too much pressure on myself with hopes for the sub 20. I slept just OK, and my tummy wasn't quite settled this a.m., but no problems once I left the house. I jogged the 1 1/2 miles over to the neighborhood start, got in the group picture of all our university participants (we're the major sponsor of the race), then went to do some accelerations before having a gel and lining up. Weather was fine - 50'ish and calm.

I started very close to the front, but still had some dodging around some slower runners. I Sanded the start ( ), but couldn't hold a good pace after that. I wasn't landing well with my stride, and I wasn't getting good length (other than that ..).

Mile 1: 6:14/mile ..HR 169

Mile 2: 6:46/mile ..HR 177

Mile 3: 6:44/mile ..HR 178

end .1: 6:05/mile ..HR 179

I didn't check pace or HR through the first mile ..just pushed it. I did check pace at about 1 1/2 miles, and it had already slipped to a 6:23/mile average after a strong start. My 2 mile split was still sub-13:00, which would have been fine, but I knew I wasn't running that well. All in all, I realize that I just did not do enough consistent 5K-specific training throughout the season to bring my time down. The whole season bounced between 20:04-20:26. But that's fine. This is the end of my 2012 race season, and I'm very pleased with it (more on that in the 3rd annual calendar-end reports we all share). Besides, the medal monger came away with a nice paper weight.

Ned, prosopis ...great job, guys!!! Both were super achievements!!!!! I'm very happy for you both.
