Not a good day.

Everything going fine with the morning routine getting the kids ready.

Drop off my daughter and school and as Im pulling her stuff out of the car I slam my knee on the car door...sort of on the side of the road I kind of limp away from the car and hit a rut in the ditch then twisting my ankle.

Bagged the 11 mile MLR on schedule for this morning.

Knee is fine...ankle is a bit tender...will just ice again tonight and see how I am in the morning and try to get a good run in.

Was there circus music playing in the background?Hope it's just a few bumps & bruises

Felt like their should have been...when I hit that rut it was all I could take from letting the expletives fly (right outside my daughter's Christian Pre-School with a bunch of moms and kids getting out of cars.

Must be a slow week...

Was able to get out for 6 this morning before I had to get the kids going.

Knee was fine...ankle is a bit sore but nothing bad.

Depending how its doing going to go out for 5-6 tonight and make it a double.

Rest tomorrow and 20 or so on Saturday for my last big run before taper.

Must be a slow week...
I'm tapering....and going crazy in the damn process.
grue taper = only doing 25 today?I went out this morning and for the first time in a long time, I had no desire to run. Slogged thru 8 but fought every step and could only really focus on getting it over with. Taking tomorrow off to rest up for a LR on Saturday and hopefully refresh the attitude. What do you do when the training catches up with you and you lose the edge?

Way normal for this time of year. I find the answer is just keep doing something. The mix of daylight savings time/shorter and darker days coupled with not real races to target makes you question why you are doing anything at all. This is a lot of the reason I find stuff to race during this time of the year. Additionally, there is those times during even the most boring and lame workouts where something clicks. I had a bit of this happen in the pool last night. I wanted nothing more than to stay home and not go last night, but went for a quick workout. I had every intent of just knocking out a quick 1,500 and then going home. I had a little swimmers ADD and lost count and decided to just keep swimming until I thought I was at or above. When I checked the Garmin, I was at 1,900. My OCD would not allow such an odd number, so I ripped off a fast 100 for an even 2,000. I felt 300% better leaving the pool then I did walking in.

What are these 20s-30s you guys are talking about? I did one of my warmer runs of the year on Monday afternoon, pushing 80 degrees!

It was back to more normal fall weather yesterday, mid-60s. I left work a little early to sneak in an hour trail run, and found that while it was still light enough out in the open on fire roads, I could barely see for the last couple of miles on mostly singletrack. Time to throw a headlamp into the bag in the morning if I'm going to run after work.

To top it off I drove back out to the entrance afterward at about 5:45 to find the gate locked! I had passed a sheriff's truck on my way out, and there was an employee waiting nearby the gate (it's all Marin Municipal Water District land). He asked if I had gotten lost, and said the sheriff had gone out to where I had parked to investigate. I guess during standard time they close the gate at 5:00 (it was 7:00 all summer), so suppose I'll have to use some alternate routes for the next few months for my afternoon/evening runs. Luckily there are at least three other nearby trail heads that aren't behind gates.

Not to sound funny, but you gonna remember to trim toenails before running 50 miles? [i recall reading about some 100 mile ultras who purposefully pull off some nails beforehand. ] Gotta give you something to do (the trimming, not the rip-outs).I'm on a break period - doing nothing for a couple weeks. In part it's because of this week - my doctoral Comp Exams. Every waking moment this week is researching and writing on three assigned topics. I'm treating it like an endurance event ...just hitting my marks as I go along, which will get me to completion by Sunday night.

I am feeling the same way. I have another half in early December. I was using the same training plan I used for my previous but I tweaked it for more miles and faster. I am thinking that was the wrong thing to do. I am going back to the training that worked for my last half. I may have gotten to excited after the last half and increased my running to much. :shrug:I am doing it but I cant say I am into it as much as I was a month ago. I think Halloween candy and shift away from healthy eating is also affecting my attitude. I do think what we eat has a lot to do with attitude.

 Tonight's do something: A 24 mile night ride. 2,550 ft. of climbing - hill-o-rama. Average temp. = 44F. With all that up there was a definitely lot of down, as well. Brrrrr...

Tomorrow a light 2,000yd swim. Saturday a likely brutal 60 mile ride.

Calm before the storm, for me anyway. Have my schedule laid out like I'll run a 5k a week from Saturday. Rocked out 7 miles today in 55 minutes - I felt about like I did in my 10 milers in October so my HR was in the same 70-75% range too. Very encouraged about that time given that it really wasn't a stressful run at all. Plan for the next 9 days:Recovery 4 Friday (33-35 mins)Lift + solid 2 Saturday (< 15 mins)Off SundaySolid 6 miles Monday (45-48 mins)Lift TuesdayEasy 4 Wednesday (33-35 mins)Off ThursdayOff FridayRace Saturday morningAgain, I'm following the weather. I have several potential races on the calendar between Nov 17 and Dec 1 so I'm just going to navigate and hit the right one, I'd like to hit this one as long as it's not a sleet + wind storm so I have 2nd chances but not going to waste my time if it's 40 degrees, sleeting, and with gusty winds. If I skip race days I will treat those as hard days and just make sure I get one in sometime that weekend.

A whole day without a post? Unacceptable.

So what did I do today? Absolutely nothin'. :P Hard ride tomorrow.

I may race tomorrow or just watch my son race. 10 miles

I tapered for a race last week that I didn't get in and have had little motivation since. Been busy with work too.

Did get in one good 6 miler this week. Broke the 8:30 mark for the first time in ages and believe the last mile was sub 8.

One thing I sincerely enjoy about serious running is the seasonal aspect of it. This week was my first "normal offseason" 35 mile week since my marathon, thanks to pneumomia. As much as I like training for stuff and racing, I also love these next few low-key months where I can just run my miles however I want without worrying about pacing. If I feel like doing some MP miles or HMP miles, that's fine. If I just want to do easy base-maintaining miles, that's cool too. This unstructured time is fun in its own way. And it only lasts until February or March, when training for spring races ramps up.

IMFL 2012 Race Report

Overall time 12:23:01 – pretty pleased with that for an IM debut. I am still sore today. Great race overall, many thanks to IMFL crew and all the volunteers. We had over 3,000 volunteers out there, how awesome is that?
that is absolutely unimaginable to me. 12 hours of racing?
What put it in perspective for me was how 3000 was checking on his head-lamp for the final marathon miles to be run in the dark ...during the pre-dawn hours just before the race! Incredible accomplishment - I'm totally impressed. :tebow:

:goodposting: :goodposting: ...although I'll start on some formal training later in January. But, yeah, these coming weeks are great. I enjoy driving out to some different trails just for the enjoyment of the experience.

Had the best running race of my life today. Better yet my son took first in his age group. He knocked out the ten miles at a 7:36 pace. This was his first event ever. More details later, unfortunately I'm working today.

Kick ###, we'll have to start and Ran a 10K in June Jr thread for the kids.

Yesterday I did 6 miles @ 8:49 which is my HMP goal

Today I did 12 miles @ 9:36 pace. I wanted this to be a little slower like 9:40-9:45 but it is what it is.

Interesting run as I took a different route today. I went through some really poor looking neighborhoods. I consider us at lower middle class financially and i often get down about it. After running through these other neighborhoods I am pretty thankful for what we have. Kind of strange to that all out poverty is with in two miles of our home.

I always had a general idea where i was but I did get a little lost today. That was kind of cool.

Thanks for all the advice! Great thread!

Just curious...any of you east coast guys ever run this race in Philly? Schuykill River Run

Looks like it's 8.4 miles along the river around Nov 10

Just wondering if it's a good course, how cold Philly is in Nov 10, and whether I should try it!
Finished this race this morning. Great weather and great, flat course!Finished in 1:14:14 for the 8.4 miler. Not the best time, but was able to keep my goal of staying under 9:00 pace (barely!)

On to next one...thinking about Marine Corps Turkey trot 10k next weekend....

Finished up a nice week...last one before taper...\

Sun..6 GA miles...just felt like going for one that day...

M...7 recovery with strides

T...10 w/6x1200m intervals

W...unscheduled rest after banging my knee and messing up my ankle.

T...more rest

F...8 GA miles...was not sure I wanted to do this before Saturday's long run...but felt good after 2 days off.

S...21 mile long run. Wanted to get this last long one over 20. 21 it was...could have done more but ran out of fluid and had a birthday party to get to. Really felt pretty good after starting out sluggish...though, the stop at about mile 12 at home was nice as the intestines were telling me I needed a quick break.

52 on the week and the marathon is 3 weeks from today.

Nice way to cap it off as I felt some of my weeks since that trip in October have been lacking.

Nice. Doing the 21 for your third 20 was a good idea. Nice confidence builder.

Nice job guys

Always look forward to seeing what everyone did during the week and race weekends. Somehow it pushes me along, especially on those weeks I have no desire to get out of bed at 3:30 am to get a run in. This early morning schedule is brutal when you've done it for 3-4 months, nice to know there are other knuckleheads out there too.

Another lather-rinse-repeat week for me and on to taper. . .finally! Seems like it's taken and incredibly long time to finally get here.

MON - 4 hilly miles @ 9:08 pace. Decided to run the full trail behind me to get in a god hill workout. Was kinda disappointed with the run because I went balls out on it and was hoping for a better time. Kind of discouraged and might have been part of the reason I was having such a blah week.

TUE - 8.1 miles @ 9:04 pace. Just because I was pissed from Monday's I decided to run the course again and add 4 miles to try and simulate a portion of the course. That felt better but I was spent when I finished and I just barely made it under my target time, still encouraged.

WED - 3.1 miles @ 9:52 pace. Just putting in some time and working out some soreness from Tuesday.

THU - 8.4 miles @ 9:28 pace. Blah, had no desire to be out.

FRI - SDO and I ROCKED IT!

SAT - 13.1 miles @ 9:24 pace. Wanted to get in one more meaningful run and this course really simulated what I expect next weekends course to be like. While slower than my target I was still happy with the run to finish up the week. Weird day, started @ 37 degrees and chilly, finished @ 50 degrees and glad I didn't have on more than I did.

 So much good stuff going this weekend - can't wait to hear about all of it.

---

On my end a solid 8 hour week. 17 miles run, 85 miles ridden, and a tiny 1,500 yd swim tacked on.

Today a solid 61 mile ride, 3,800ft. of climbing. Took yesterday off to avoid the cramp-o-rama from last week. Much, much better ride today.

Original plan was to do it for my 2nd one...but things did not work out for that one. After the few days of rest...I knew I would go for more than 20 today and after a rough start...it was not bad at all.Definitely gave me some confidence...especially with the hills I run here vs. the course being much flatter.

Waiting on them to post results. They didn't have them on site. GPS had me at 8:08 min/mi for 10.08 miles. For reference, my speed work mile repeats have been at 8:00 min/mi pace and my most recent 5k pace was 8:18 min/mi. Ran the one mile "mountain" (mile 8 to 9) at 8:35 and finished up with a 7:27 pace for the last mile. Had a little more in me but the hammy was barking the last three miles.Soreness in new places this morning, but went out for 13.3 at 9:34 pace.

Once results are up I'll provide some details.

Taper week 2 is done and I feel like crap. Legs are a mess. Patience is a virtue...................

Tue (7mi GA) - Pretty chilly this morning and it was energizing. Went out a little too fast, but settled in nice. 8:28/147

Wed (4mi recovery) - With the Nor'easter hitting, I bagged this run. No sense in going out in wet snow and wind for just 4mi.

Thur (8mi w/ 3x1600 VO2max) - I was looking forward to this, but the tail end of the Nor'easter made this really difficult (20mph winds with 30mph gusts). I've lost all touch with 5K pacing and ran this like a total dork. 6:14, 6:29, 6:40 for the splits.

Fri (5mi recovery) - Right hammy a little tight, but felt OK otherwise. 9:46/130

Sat (6mi recovery) - These recovery runs are getting annoying. 9:47/131

Sun (13mi MLR) - The last double digit run and it sucked. I felt like I was running in sand and couldn't keep my HR down. Thank god the race wasn't today. :X 9:14/144

Well, that's pretty much it for this training cycle. No real running next week (sooo sick of all these recovery runs). Just a short 7mi dress rehearsal run stands between me and 3:30 next Sunday. :football:

:goodposting: Seriously. Race on Saturday and a half marathon cooldown run on Sunday? Sheesh.

Following my 60 mile ride and swim yesterday I did a 9.4 mile run today (5 hours of workouts this weekend). And I'm probably going to be in traction tomorrow. How you guys recover from these long workout weeks I'll never know.

Yup and I'm still roughly 2 hours behind you and in traction too.

Oof, some family stuff came up this weekend so I have to skip my race. It's the right decision, but I'm bummed because this weekend is shaping up to be a great running day. 40's, no rain, wind non factor, on a fast track. Oh well, maybe the extra 10 days of race training will benefit, plus my plan B (Sat 12/1) is a road race in a flat area so it may yield better times. Re-routing my plan for the week right now, going to bag my solid 6 today and replace it with a tempo run - going to add a slow distance run Wednesday too.

Nicely done fellas! I shook off a late night over in Berkeley watching my Ducks put up another 50+ and move to the top of the polls with a nice trail run on Sunday. Had just coffee with coconut oil and cinnamon for breakfast, and headed out the front door with a goal of 3 hours or so. It's less than a mile through the neighborhood to the trail head, then off on toall fire road and single track. Focused on my MAF HR zone (135-141), and was able to keep it there pretty well through about 12 miles, then it started to drift a bit. Had one gel at about the 1:45 mark, energy stayed strong throughout - at these low intensities my fat burning system seems to be improving. My achilles and soleus were a little achy by the end, but felt good overall. Ended up doing 15 miles with 1500+' of gain, just a couple of decent climbs but mostly rolling stuff.

I'm considering signing up for another trail race in December, there are a couple of 20-26 milers nearby. Or I may alter my training a bit and do a road marathon in January as my April 50 miler is pretty flat. I'll have to get over my asphalt allergy to do that, though.

I know some people that ran the new Trenton Half this weekend. The course looked fast. Almost suspiciously fast. A couple guys that were running 18:30-19:30min 5k this summer with previous PRs around 1:25 ran 1:22:34 and 1:22:55. But if the distance is legit, it should be on the radar of locals for upcoming years.

I did my first decent week in awhile. 37 miles for the week including my first speed in awhile on Tuesday. 6x800 in the low to mid 2:50s with 400m jog.

Hey, hey - there's a lesser known Turkey Trot in the burbs that's only a 5k. Course is supposed to be more paved than trails too. Looks like I still may be able to rock out 2 more this year and will have 9 days in between.

Spencer Mountain 10 mile Race Report

Last minute add to the schedule since my son has been itching to race and it finally worked out. I was undecided if I'd race or just watch but decided to give it run on the trip out. Impromptu goal was a 9:00 pace.

This was a small event with 136 signed up. We were just standing around when everyone started running. Pretty funny as there was no gun or go annoucement. Had to dodge a couple of people facing the wrong way.

Mile splits are based on the course, not the gps. Course was long.

Mile 1 - 7:58, hr 170 (not accurate), 9 ft up, 9 ft down - First time I haven't Sanded the start, but I probably took 15 secs to get to the start line which didn't have a mat.

Mile 2 - 8:06, hr 152, 9 up, 19 down - Just fell into a nice pace and was trying to bank time. One guy passed me, the last of the day.

Mile 3 - 8:10, hr 153, 19 up, 39 down - Passed two people I was pacing. Realized I matched my best recent 5k pace and was worried about the price to be paid.

Mile 4 - 7:51, hr 155, 29 up, 118 down - This is getting stupid fast now. Got some rabbits in front I can't catch

Mile 5 - 8:31, hr 156, 88 up, 19 down - First sign of a hill and I attack it reeling in a couple. I'm sitting at roughly 8:10 pace on my watch and start thinking a 8:30 stratch pace is possible.

Mile 6 - 8:36, hr 155, 118 up, 137 down - I don't know if the uphills or downhills hurt more. Gobble up some more on the road up. Decided here that I wouldn't let anyone pass me the balance of the way.

Mile 7 - 8:12, hr 157, 127 up, 118 down - Pressed the throttle down a bit more.

Mile 8 - 8:57 (1.05 gps mi), 156 hr, 127 up, 118 down - Mountain running paying off, cum pace not bleeding away too bad.

Mile 9 - 8:34, hr 161, 108 up, 19 down - This was the signature climb and their were uphill targets ahead. Did pass one cop on the climb, lifted my shirt, and said fat boys representing. Thankfully he checkled instead of shooting me. Passed about 5 and had two more in sight.

Mile 10 - 7:34, hr 164 (174 at the line), 0 up, 59 down - Crested the hill and it was a gentle downhill to flat in. Looked flat to the eye. Caught up with one guy and he picked up the pace. I hung as long as I could but my hammy was arguing about it the whole way. We got within 5 yards of the next guy with a half mile to go and I told him to have a strong finish. I was at a pace much faster than my speed work and knew my only hope was to lay in the weeds. That wasn't to be as my new buddy caught the next guy and they found another gear. They put 20 seconds into me and I put 45 seconds into the two youngsters I passed towards the end of the previous mile.

Finished at 1:22:26:26, good for 59th overall. I had the course distance at 10.08 for a 8:09 pace. Official time had me at 8:15 pace. Either way, a huge result for me, especially with the hills on the back half. Surprisingly enough, me and my 220 lbs did most of the passing on the hills. Ran in my new INOV-8 155 gram minimalist shoes and loved them.

Now of to the best part. This was my son's road race debut. Age the age of 14 he knocked out a 1:15:15 good for a 7:33 pace. Won his age group and finished 23rd overall. He's been flying high over the result and can't wait to race again. He actually used some nice race tactics letting the guy he passed around mile 9 re-take the lead and set the pace. At the end he dropped the hammer and beat him by 2 sec at the line.

In a matter of less than a year it's gone from me having to slow up for him to me needing a bike to keep up.

If anyone has time, can you review my 5K race website. It has not gone public yet but Im hoping within the week. Just let me know if you see anything I totally missed or doesnt seem right.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: at mile 9. Major  to the mini BnB.

Well, that's pretty much it for this training cycle. No real running next week (sooo sick of all these recovery runs). Just a short 7mi dress rehearsal run stands between me and 3:30 next Sunday. :football:
You're going to just crush this thing. Enjoy the rest of your race week.
