Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

I don't think I'd have the discipline to do that. I'd get carried away with racing.
And here I thought that would be our plan for March 24 ...a couple miles warmup, the HM, then a 5 mile cooldown before they hand out medals. For discipline, you could race with me (7:10/mile?), which is below your Boston marathon pace and comfortably below your HM pace. The extended cooldown isn't ideal, but hey, it's a hardship I'll endure for my FBG buddy. :P
Nope! Since I'm going through this grueling 60-70 weekly mile training program in the height of winter, I'm damn well going to be selfish and shoot for a PR!
You're going to destroy it too.
Thanks for the confidence but my 1:27:46 PR is my best race from a McMillian standpoint. Destroying it isn't happening. Beating it? Hopefully.

I have the Dbacks race against cancer 5k tomorrow. This is followed by fan fest. Looking forward to this one but it is a long drive to get there so I have to get going real early.http://arizona.diamondbacks.mlb.com/ari/community/race.jsp

I'm betting 18/70 will put you into uncharted territory.

How are you feeling, Ivan?
Still not quite right, honestly, with my last running being Sunday's 10-miler. I'm leaning more toward the "hernia" theory now, since if it was a muscle pull a week off should have cleared everything up. But I'm going to the doctor on Tuesday so I'll find out for sure then. I'm not overly worried about having to take a few weeks off, but I am sort of itching to get back out there to start training for my half in May.

Good luck to Koby, Hang 10 and anyone else racing this weekend!
I'm doing a 15K at GMP as part of my 17-miler. I'll do 2-3 miles beforehand, run the race at GMP, and then do another 5-6 miles afterwards.
:blink:ran the 5k version of this race this morning at an 8:47/mi pace. my fastest 5k ever. :thumbup:caught a cup of water, walked a couple blocks and ran another two at 9:20.

:goodposting: And it's early in the season! I'm expecting a couple more PRs out of him soon.

Ran my 14k at 59:59. 6:53 a mile. Considering the 20+ mph wind, I'm very pleased. Ran as fast as a 6:35 mile and as slow as a 7:05 with the wind in my face. Gonna be tough to do that for a half marathon but that's the goal. :banned:

Feeling great, four miles in 28 minutes on the snow and ice. I know it works for a lot of you guys but I am changing up my training this year. Running and feeling so much better and stronger cross training only running three to four times per week, two of them hard ones.

 That's basically how I'm training. Cross train 3 times a week and 3 times a week run (mostly high intensity). Seems to work for me.

I am just not mentally wired to do the long and slow. I have two paces, fast and faster. Maybe that will change with age...

Nice run Hang 10!!!! Pretty much like running straight uphill with that wind, impressive speed man

50 mi on the bike this morning (40 degree start) with a 20 min x threshold effort around the one hour mark. Got shelled to 5th place on the hill starting the interval but kept the leaders in sight. Clawed my way back to all square at the 10 min mark, hr was at 173. Rode nose in the wind most of the way and then pulled ahead at the end. The guy in front I was pacing was doing a cp20 test and shooting for 280 watts. Assuming that he hit it and that I'm fatter, I should have posted a power mark just north of that.I didn't bring any fuel and was on the verge of boinking the last 10 miles. Got home and had some egg whites and a protien shake only to spend the next 1 hour puking everything back up before having to go to work. Sand - I'm going to try to be in good enough shape to pace you up the 4 mile Shull's Mill climb at the start of BSG and then escort you to mile 20 or so when things get serious and guys like you grow wings. On a very positive note, after the SB pork up to 231, I'm down to 221 as of this morning.

New PR for me @ the 5k distance. 8:06 pace :pickle:I had a great time. I passed Kirk Gibson and JJ Putz on the race :boxing: I know Kirk Gibson is an old man now but still it's KIRK FREAKING GIBSON!!!!Fan fest after the race was very cool. They had every ones times scrolling on the board that usually has team lineups in the out field. I got a nice picture of mine. I also got my picture taken with Kirk Gibson. It was a good day

Hang 10 -- Great job. If you can maintain that pace for 14K, it's not that much of a stretch to extend it out to a half, especially adjusting for the wind.

prosopis -- Congratulations on the PR. You've added a lot of speed over the past year or so. No idea who those two guys are though (sorry).

Furley -- Another FBG, another PR. Nice job.

Congrats!!!! Huge Gibby fan. I picture him running gimpy and arm pumping like his Dodger HR trot. A bunch of the '84 Tigers would come watch HS baseball when I played for a local HS team in the Detroit area. He and Dave Rozema were there a few times, more frequently it was guys like Dave Bergman and Rusty ####z (names I'd be surprised anyone but Tri-Man knew). And, good for you for getting up early for something like this. Sounds like a killer ride. I managed a 58 mile ride today. Lots of second bests, so a pretty decent ride. Followed that up with a 1,500yd swim. So a nice 4 hour day today.I highly doubt I'll be dropping you on any of the climbs, Mr. Infinite Power. In good news, though, I was down to 172.5 after the ride. Need to keep that weight loss rolling.

For me finished up a nice week yesterday in some nice weather.M: Dusted off a workout I loved last year. 1 mile warmup...1@HMP X 2, .5@just over 5k X 2, .25@ under 5k X 2. All followed by about .25 of recovery except between the two .25 intervals. Followed by about a mile of cooldown. Total ended up 6.5 miles.T: Light weight work and core work.W: 8 GAT: 4 RecoveryF: Light Weight and Core Work.S: 10 GANot a huge mileage week but Im keeping it easy right now to build up slow...going to get that Wednesday MLR up around 10 and the Saturday long up to 15 or 16 to peak a few weeks before the half.

:lmao: i got outsprinted to the finish by an about 9-10 year old girl.... wearing a backpack :coffee:
I left out the part about the 7 year old who had the worse running form I may have ever seen. I could hear him behind me for much of the race. I could hear feet just slapping the ground hard. Little feller passed me about 1.5 miles in. We traded leads a few times but he eventually pulled ahead for the win. :bag:

Hang10 - I agree with Ivan 100%. You should be able to turn that into your HM pace with some focused training.

Training Report Week 9

Tues 6 recovery miles in a.m., 4 recovery miles in p.m. Treadmill both times.

Wed 15 miles. Averaged 7:50/135. Outside.

Thurs 6 recovery miles. 8:18/128. This was in a slushy snow. Slipping each step. I tried to run closer to the middle of the street where there were tire tracks. It was fun playing chicken with some of the ongoing traffic.

Fri 13 miles. Outside, cold. Of course, one must always stretch a 13 mile run to 13.1. 7:40/138.

Sat 7 w/ 6 100 meter strides. Averaged 8:00. This was Saturday morning after running late Friday night. Tired from the get go. I have to admit my strides were kind of wimpy. I also wanted to save energy for Sunday.

Sun 16 with 12 at MP. Marathon pace is supposed to be 6:52. Temperature in the upper 30s but raining throughout the entire run. Started with a drizzle, then a light to medium rain for the rest of the run. After 4 up, averaged 6:47/156. Very pleased with this run. The miles against the wind were challenging and I really started stuggling the last few miles but hung on. I don't think I could have made it many more miles at that pace. I guess the extra weight of sopping wet clothes didn't help nor did the fatigue from running all these miles these last few weeks.

Total miles for the week: 67.1. Next week is a recovery week of only 58 miles. I'm also off work next week so I'll have a lot of extra time to sleep, rest and eat.

I have to go do something............
:lmao: wingin' a 40 mile trail race. How are you feeling, Ivan?
LMBO: Nah. He ended up doing a hard 50 on the bike. :coffee:

My update:

I spent much of yesterday putting together a new elliptical for my house, and managed a 50 minute spin on it. Loved it, and highly recommend the one I purchased (on sale right now at Sear's for $800). I'm with BnB, and am in slim down mode. My frame is a lot bigger right now than it ever has been(thanks P90!). I like the size, but don't want the extra weight to carry around on my bike. I'm down to 179 from 183 the morning after the Super Bowl, and hope to lose 6 more pounds (hence the need for more elliptical). My training schedule looks something like this:

Sunday: P90x Chest/Back (odd weeks) or Chest/Shoulders/Triceps (even weeks)

Monday: 60+ minutes elliptical (or plyo); Ab ripper; 2 mile run with the dog

Tuesday: 20 mile bike; P90x Shoulder/Arms or Back/Biceps

Wednesday: Interval work on elliptical; Ab rippper

Thursday: 20 mile bike; Legs and Back

Friday: wild card day; I like this to be a day off, but have been running 5 miles this day

Saturday: P90x core; Long bike ride, 30 minute elliptical

Another nice week Juxt.I read weekly reports like this and I wonder again how I got through 18/55. Its nowhere near what you are doing...nor what Ned and others have done for training (and I won't even get into the insanity that is grue)...then I remember how I was mentally stressed out near the peak weeks and my wife even noticed I was stressed out.Just felt like I always needed to be running and I didn't do anything but run, clean myself up, then chauffeur the kids to and from school.Makes me again realize its going to take a ton of motivation for me to ever do another marathon again (though, I do get the itch to again try and if I need to get my mind in gear because it would have to be next spring (no way Im doing it next fall)...because as of right now its the only year my 2 kids will be in the same school at the same time which would leave me the right amount of weekly time to train.

I remember. Prosopis - very cool! Enjoy the bragging rights. In my second triathlon (back in 1988  ) I beat Mike Adamle by 4 minutes. He's a few years older than me, but still nice to know I beat a former Big Ten football MVP who had featured on the local news for competing that year.

Lots of other solid racing and training!!! Juxt, I can appreciate what you were running in this a.m. - not fun stuff.

--

I'm taking a couple days off to make it a long weekend for research on my paper. Did 12 miles on Friday - 8:38/mile, 142 HR. That's a faster pace and lower HR than I've been running. The benefit of now adding some speedwork into my training? I added 10 miles yesterday with 8 hard 1/4 miles thrown in (avg 6:37/mile pace).

Week 4 is in the books. Starting to feel a lot better. I can't wait for the trails to thaw out so I can get out there.

Tue (8mi MLR) - Came super easy. Totally wasn't expecting this. HR was much better. 9:19/143

Wed (10mi MLR) - Stressed out between work and some bad news. Just Gumped it and tried to go into autopilot. 9:25/145

Thu (5mi recovery) - Surprisingly sore. 9:59/137

Fri (9mi GA) - Junk run. I felt amazing and got carried away. Should've slowed way down, but it was too much fun. Felt like I could go forever, even in the Nor'easter. 8:33/158

Sat (5mi recovery) - Very windy from the Nor'easter leftovers. 10:03/136

Sun (17mi Long) - About as uneventful as 17 could go, aside from the wind. Ran new hilly route that I did 2 weeks ago. Much easier than last time. 9:27/149

54mi total

At what point do you guys taper for a race? There's a 30k race 3 weeks before my half and I'm pretty sure I'm going to run it. Any downside to running that far that close to my goal race? I don't plan on pushing the pace too much, just get some more endurance under my belt.

I think it totally depends on what kind of volume you're running, but for any typical HM plan I'd taper the week before and that's it. 3 weeks is as close to the HM as I'd want it, I think.

Cut my long run short on Saturday at 12 miles. Just wasn't feeling great, my right ankle was hurting a bit (that was new), and afterward I got a knot in my upper left calf. Decided listening to my body was more important than 8 more miles on that day.Took yesterday off, but will head out today after dropping my daughter off at school and get a few miles in. This weekend it's a little Valentine's getaway with the lady with running not a real big part of that picture (should be some solid, uh, cross training though), so going to really focus on some quality this week. I'll get another long run in the weekend of the 23rd, then scale it back the weekend of the 2nd heading into the 50K on the 9th - the 50K is essentially my longest training run, so not too much of a taper heading in.

Yes, to run 50ish or more weekly miles is a huge commitment that you have to be mentally ready to undertake. It also has to be enough of a priority that it will affect your life in other ways. It's easier for me as I'm not married, have no kids and have a job that I've done for a number of years and really isn't that stressful. I have the time and energy to commit. I honestly don't know how some of you can manage it, particularly those with young kids.

I honestly don't know how some of you can manage it, particularly those with young kids.
shonuff - don't let whatever happened to you on the first marathon scar you so badly. Hell Oprah beat me on my first one. :bag: This game heavily favors the experienced guys.

:goodposting: But he should do an ultra first before he does another marathon.

I ran a clinic on how not to prepare for a race this weekend. First, do no speedwork for months leading up to a race. Second, skip running the day before a race. This may not seem like a big deal but I have always believed you have to at least do a short shake out the legs run the day before a race. Third, come down with a stomach bug that has you on the hopper the whole night before and day of the race. I don't know what the heck got into my system but I was a wreck internally Sat night and Sun morning. So after debating running at all, I decided to go because it was a beautiful day here and we planned to get the kids outside anyway. And they love the races. So we still get lost around the Raleigh area about once a week. Happens with a still developing area that you don't know well. Not good when it happens when you're trying to find a race. Bottom line is I got to the place where the race was at 1:48 for a 2PM race. Had to go get my registration info even though they were shutting things down, go to the bathroom for one more deuce  and pin my number on, tie the shoe thingy on, etc. So I get outside and hear 3 minutes to race time. Had to find my wife and give her my "warmup" (that I did not get) clothes, jog around for a minute, do a couple high knees then got in the pack. I started way back in the pack from where I used to but I figured I wouldn't be contending anyway. So onto the race. First mile had some small rolling hills, not too bad but I was weaving in and out and basically warminp up as I raced. First mile in 6:05. Second mile the bigger hills came. No big steep climbs but when you aren't in your prime shape, any hills are killer to try to run fast on - at least for me. I started huffing and puffing on this mile and could feel the lack of a warmup in my tight legs. Went through 2M in 12:18. Last mile I was back and forth with this high school kid for awhile, I really just wanted to be done and there were more hills. I pass the kid with 400-500 meters to go but he comes up on me again at about 100 meters to go. Didn't even have the typical competitive desire and I just let the kid go figuring I wasn't running a fast time anyway and I didn't want to try to sprint the last 100 and get hurt. Final time 19:16. My wife comes up to me after and first thing I say to her is so much for the placing streak. She always comments that no matter how hard on myself I am, I always place in my age group. We run the cooldown with me pushing the kiddos and come back for the refreshments and watching the bigger kids run the 300m race. My almost 3 year old says from the stroller...I want to run too like Daddy  I said you can next year, honey. Then I start nudging my wife to leave. She's saying hold on let's see the results blah blah. I said I knew what I ran and I saw some guys around my age ahead of me near the start, there's no way I placed, let's go. She convinces me to stay for the results and I wait with the kids while she goes to look at them. She comes back shaking her head and I'm figuring that means I was 5th or 6th in my age group or something. She says "you won your age group, you ahole." Turns out that a couple guys were 33 and 34 and the 40-44 group was stacked. I think 4 guys in their early 40s beat me. And I think racing actually calmed my insides down. Or I just had no more to give. Things are more "regular" now. So even though I had terrible prep, no warmup and my calves are screaming today, I got a good fast run in - something I hadn't done in months - and I got a $20 gift certificate for a running store to boot for winning the age group.

That's a pretty solid time. What's your PR in the 5k?

:lmao: I know the race day rocket poo all too well. Low 19s on a terrible day. :loco: Congrats on the hardware.
He really did put the swerve on me with that post. I had to do a double take when I saw "first mile at 6:05" after all the excuses. :loco:
