Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

After my long runs (for me) I have been getting really sore behind my left knee. It's usually sore for 24-36 hours and sometimes painful to walk. Is this due to lack of warmup before and penis stretching afterwards? I do both, but maybe it's not enough. Or maybe it's form?
I have no advice for you but I did want to say that have very quickly turned into the Studs N Duds of the running thread

Did 7.5 @ 9:22 today.

Big mud race/zombie run 5k is next week. Hoping for a fun time but I really dont know what to expect. I am thinking of running it screaming like a little girl.

If you ever invite me to do any events with you, hopefully someone will remind me to say no. You must have taken a dump on the Patron Saint of Weather's momma.
Tell me about it. Last year for this race they had record highs in St. Paul, probably 65-70° for the race and 81° later in the day. Tomorrow we're going to have wind chills in the single digits. So between the cold, the likely less-than-ideal footing, and the fact that I'm feeling a bit under the weather, I'm not sure how I'm going to approach it. Might just shoot for GMP (7:10ish), or I might even just run for fun. GTD.

I actually remember this one. Still unreal. And I agree with you that the winchill your facing tomorrow is going to suck for racing if for no other reason than your body temperature is going to vary dramatically based on what direction you're running -- I'd be worried about going from ###-cold to overheating after two quick turns. Good luck.

All this whining and crying is a good sign that they are not as doped up as before.

Agreed. Go get'em Grue and Hang 10!. Damn your luck though Grue._____________________My update:I dusted off my road bike and took it for its first real spin in over a month (been doing a crapload of elliptical instead). Winds were around 10-12 MPH = not too bad. Went out fast, and assumed I was downwind. Big flag at mile 4 showed it was more of a cross wind = Giddy'up!! I planned on only doing 16, but it felt good, so I added a 5 mile loop in the middle. Ended up doing 21 miles in just under an hour, and my HR only briefly got over 170 (during the only decent climb, directly into the wind; still had a 3:22 mile!). My legs felt like they had a ton in them, though they are slightly sore today. Great to know that I'm not losing much if anything being on the elliptical instead of on the road.

Geez dude...did you borrow Fabian's motor? That's smokin' fast for this time of year.

Hopefully the weather gods make it up to you next month in Boston and bring back that hurricane tailwind from 2 years ago.

To the FFA injury ward:

duck -- My uneducated guess is that this is almost certainly just some random post-race thing. I've never done a 50K, but I know post-marathon people routinely feel pain where they've never felt pain before. You were smart to call it a day when you did though. Good luck.
Went out yesterday for my first run post-50K....and had to abort. My right achilles was really hurting, which was unexpected because it didn't hurt at all on Saturday (or before or since). So after about 3/4 of a mile of it not getting better, I stopped and walked back to the start. Headed home, threw on some ice, some KT tape, and will check in with my PT on Friday.

Obviously a little concerned with a 50M coming up in less than a month now. This is the injury that shut me down in 2009, so crossing my fingers and hoping it's just some post-race inflammation that will chill out in the next few days.
Eye on the prize duck. Goal is WS100 qualifying.Still dealing with the hip issue on my end. Ran 5k easy tonite. Pain was a 2 on the 1-10 scale.
Thanks fellas. I was on the road down in LA the past 2 days, and it was a bit sore yesterday but didn't bother me at all today - and I walked close to a mile at Oakland airport from the gate to my car.Went to see my PT as well today, she worked on my calves and IT bands for an hour. She thought the fact that I could do the eccentric calf exercises on a step without pain was a good sign, and was hopeful this would be a very temporary setback. And considering she wrote an article for Ultrarunning Magazine on this very topic, hopefully she knows of what she speaks! So I'll do those exercises (raising up on the edge of a stair with both calves, shifting the weight to my right leg and then slowly lowering the heel below the step, repeat x 10-15) for the next few days, and if I continue to have no pain I'll head out and try running a bit then.

Cold this morning with iffy footing, so I changed the goal from "racing" to GMP training run and ran with the 1:35 pacer. Garmin says 7:09 average pace for 13.19 miles, which I feel was a good effort considering the conditions and all the extra clothes.

Quick shower, then back to St. Paul to drink copious amounts of beer. Have a great day, everybody!

St. Paddy's Day 5K Race Report

Well, I finished! As I posted a week or two ago, I failed at my only other attempte at a 5K:link. So, I’m glad I gutted this one out.

The weather for the race wasn’t bad. Low 30s. 10 mph or so wind but it was diagonal. Parked at my parents’ house which was 2.6 miles away from the start so I could leave my keys and stuff somewhere while having a nice distance for a warm up and cool down later.

I got there 20 minutes early and staked out my starting spot near the front but not too near. 2,200 runners so this was a decent size 5K. I didn’t really have a goal but I’d be ecstatic to break 19:00 and happy to be at 19:15 or so.

The course is basically an out-and-back the first 2 miles then winds around downtown for the last part. Mile 1 was against the diagonal wind and although this was a fairly flat course, there was some elevation gain making it the hardest of the 3 miles. I started strong at a little under 6:00 pace but quickly sensed that was going to be a bit too fast and slowed. Finished mile 1 in 6:14, HR avg. 153.

As I mentioned mile 2 was back the same way so it was mainly on a downgrade and partially with the wind. That didn’t help my time though as I was having a tough time and wanted to make sure I didn’t run out of gas completely. 6:20/168.

I kept the same pace mile 3 and was hanging in there. 6:19/168. I picked it up for the last .1 at 5:55 pace.

My Garmin was a few seconds off from my official time which was 19:34. I finished 33 out of 2204 and 2 out of 110 in my age group. I didn’t think about awards and left shortly after the race but I now notice that the top 3 in each AG get a medal. I can pick mine up at a local running store so I suppose I should probably do that. However, wasn’t this a really slow crowd? I wouldn’t have expected to finish so high with the time I got.

Although part of me is disappointed with my time, it’s nice to have a 5K time in the books. I’ve decided that 2013 is going to be my Summer of Speed and I’m going to shift my training after Boston from distance stuff to shorter stuff like 5Ks. This gives me something to measure my (hopefully) improvement on.

Nice work and amazingly consistent pacing. It's hard to race 5Ks during marathon training and especially hard to run one that evenly.

footing just blew out there this morning. at least until i got in at around 8. every step slipped out from under you.. it was just hard to get any momentum going forward. here's to hoping your race wasn't as bad as my morning run.

Nice job grue & Juxt, can't wait to see you two go head-to-head at Boston. Great runs guys, happy to hear you finally finished one Juxt :lmao:

Juxt - nice!!! The CARA races are always very competitive. Everything else: not so much. (E.g., check the results of The Race That's Good For Life, a 5K here in Oak Park that starts the season for CARA ...very competitive.) Regardless - very cool to be 33 out of 2,204 and to take an AG medal in a big group!!!

Very nice! Who else is racing this weekend?---

On my end, a mediocre week Had one USDO due to work and forgetting my run clothes. :bag: Managed 17 miles run, 83 miles ridden (including some time on a sweet, sweet test bike), and 1,5k in the pool (boo hiss). 7.5 hrs. total. Hope others had a great week! Trying to get in a solid two hours today, which would make for a 6 hour weekend.

Grue - Nice job, considering the conditions.

Jux - Congrats, you 5Ker you!!! I have similar plans - Summer of Speed. :excited:

A solid week 9 is in the books. Starting to get antsy for this triple to get here...

Tue (9mi MLR) - Gusty winds, but my legs felt very strong. My glutes were curiously sore though. 9:06/144

Wed (12mi Trail) - The weather was nice and I had some extra time so I snuck out to the trails instead of a MLR on the road. Super hilly @ 1,501ft of climbing. My quads were torched. 10:34/148

Thu (5mi recovery) - 30+ mph winds were killer. I couldn't get my HR down at all when running into the wind. 9:49/145 Waste of a recovery run.

Fri (9mi MLR) - Still kinda windy, but a lot better than yesterday. I was rollin'. 9:02/145

Sat (7mi GA) - Nice morning and just beat the rain. Silky smooth running, albeit a tad high HR @ 8:36/154.

Sun (20mi Trail) - Switched it up and ran a different set of trails that weren't as hilly, but have a ton of those mtn bike rollers. Very hard to keep pace on those things. Trails were sloppy, but that's how I like it. ;) I felt very strong today. Could've easily gone longer. I've always respected the 20+ mile runs... Always an accomplishment to get another notch on the belt. 2,213ft of climbing @ 10:34/149

1:34:11 My new PR in the half. Not my goal but considering running through injury, I'm pretty happy overall. I'd give more of a race report but I'm pretty drunk...maybe later.

Great job! 1:34 is speedy as hell. You're blessed to have a time like that as a "B" goal. Enjoy a well-earned afternoon of boozing. ;) ___________________Today's plan was to run 15 after church, but it ended up being colder and a lot windier than I had planned on, so I ended up bagging it after having my face go numb in less than a mile. I honestly can't recall the last time I just ditched a run, and obviously I'm not happy about it. On a side note, my last few days at work have been cataclysmically bad (not losing my job or anything like that, but bad nonetheless), which has pretty much decimated my motivation to train or do anything else. Hopefully I can get things going tomorrow sometime.

Very nice time. Impressive. Drink away!I finished the week with 56.4 miles. It was warm Saturday for my 20-miler and I felt the humidity. Six easy this morning.

Nice job, grue. Looks like you are in pretty damn good shape if you can run low 7s for a Half by treating it more like a training run.

Way to go, Jux! Don't be disappointed with that time. Some warmer weather this spring/summer with the background base you have and the Summer of Speed plan...I see an improvement of at least a minute. And now you a baseline to go from.

Great job, Hang10. Very impressive considering the time off and injuries. You'll have to let us know how you feel (not the hangover :banned: ) tomorrow.

Yeah - that's like my PR, so a big :finger: from me on that one. :P And nice HM, H10. Well deserving of some good drink afterward.

Just in case you guys weren't happy with the weather you've been enduring in the last month. This is what happened at Milano-San Remo today:

ETA: Finished out the weekend's work with an 8.5 mile hill run (530 ft. of climbing). So a good 6 hours of work this weekend including 9.5 miles run, 67 miles ridden, and a half hour jumping around on the trampoline with the kids. Gonna sleep pretty good tonight.

Don't know what's going on but I think most of us have been effected by some rough times at work, especially given the way the economy has been these last few years. I can't offer anything but some encouraging words. Find solace where you can, do what you can for others and take comfort you have work when so many don't. It's not much but I know when I'm having a particularly difficult stretch the long runs in the mornings help to focus me. I suspect you know this already. This too shall pass my friend.Hit the trails for the first time on Saturday and it's official, I'm as directionally challenged in the woods as I am in the city so I got that going for me. Ran the trails where the half will be in April and had a blast  Really enjoyed myself for 11 slow miles just taking it all in and trying not to get killed or hopelessly lost. Beautiful day for a run as well http://runkeeper.com/user/ronnash/activity/157701591 Stopped and took some pics ala the Duck which turned out cool because Runkeeper puts them where you took them on the run. Never used the function before. Only fell once, about a 1/4 mile from the truck at the end of the run. . .in the creek. Full on douching, made for a fun ride home

The only downside was instead of wearing some old kicks I had on my street shoes and damn near ruined them. The trail shoes I ordered came in late Saturday so I was like a kid on Christmas. Put them on and they weren't even close to 4E width even though both shoes & box stated they were so they're going back but I'm struggling to find anything even close to moderately priced in a 4E width for trail shoes. WTF? Plenty of street shoes to choose from, nothing in trail shoes. I put in a call to the New Balance store about a 1/2 hour away to see if they could line up some selections, we'll see what they come up with.

Race Report

OK....so I am a wimp...I hate running in cold rainy conditions. Also my family now enjoys my "running vacations" so they like nice weather too! So I bagged the Half Marathon in Delaware this weekend since it was supposed to be sleety and rainy.

Instead we went south to Carolina Beach, NC. Ran the Low Tide 10k. AMAZING weather. Race time, partly cloudy, breezy, 53. (Afternoon was 73, sunny).

Race was pretty well attended. About 200 for the 10k and 1,000 for the 5k.

I got out pretty well...first 2 miles at about 8:00/pace. Then a little tired for miles 3-4 at about 8:20 pace..ugh.

Then the nightmare happened....as we 10k runners rounded the miler marker 4, we all ended up on a common course with the 5k runners. And by that time, all that was left were the "Walkers"...it was like entering a Mardi Gras mass of people....

So the last 2 miles was lots of weaving, juking, cursing. That part sucked.

Last .2 miles were on the beach itself....not hard packed sand, but deep shifting sand at that time. Some sore ankles today!

Anyway...finished in 50:54 (8:13 pace) which was about a minute slower than my PR last fall (8:03 pace)

The after party was excellent! 80s cover band on the beach with beer, BBQ, and activities for the kids!

3 weeks until my Cherry Blossom 10 miler here in DC. I have to get some longer runs soon!

Ned - 62 Miles! I'm out of it for a little while, everybody gets delusions of grandeur!

Grue - Nice race.

Hang 10 - Congrats on the HM PR.

Dan Fouts - I'm doing the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler too. Maybe we can connect there - my only FBG real-life meeting was at Thanksgiving 5k Turkey Trot a few years ago. Nigel walked up to me and said "Are you from the Internet?" He was also dressed differently than he said he was going to, so that he could have walked past me incognito if he decided he wanted to.

So after wasting January and February for the third straight year, I'm beginning to figure out that maybe 5 a.m. running in the Winter isn't for me. Next winter I'm going to have run on a treadmill in the afternoon or something, just to not lose all my conditioning like I've been doing.

Finally starting to get back into it, though still running only on the weekends. Did 12 yesterday and it actually felt pretty good. I have that 10-miler in three weeks, which is going to be a sorry display. And I'm signed up for a Marathon on Memorial Day weekend, which I'm still going to do, even though I'm not going to be in real shape.

Goal is still to qualify for Boston next year, so I'm planning to target an early fall marathon for that qualifying attempt. Need a 3:15, ran 3:20 in November 2011 and haven't done any real training since.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Finally sober. :bye:

This was a bitter sweet race for me. It was obviously sweet to crush my previous best half marathon time (1:41:57...geez...I had to look it up last night to remember what it was  ) but I really did have to gut out some pain to do it. It was also tough knowing that had I been heathly, I'm pretty sure I would have hit my goal. I'm also a bit nervous the possible damage/setbacks I might have incured by running through the pain this morning...I'm hella sore.

BUT ENOUGH #####ING...to the race report.

7AM start...temps in the low 40's with winds out of the NNE at 10-15. Parking sucked. Had to park about a mile from the start and walk. Gave us just enough time to check our bags and get into the corral. I opted for just t-shirt, shorts and gloves...damn, it was hard letting that jacket go but I knew it woulda been soaked in sweat by the end. So we jump in the corral with about a minute to spare and the we wait...and wait...apparently some idiot broke through barrier in his truck and was heading to the start line...police went crazy. Anyways, nothing like standing there freezing your ### off for 15 to 20 minutes before running a HM.

First mile, I jump out to pretty decent pace (6:39) but try to calm my self down and settle into something a little closer to 7's. Mile 2 is 7 on the dot...mile 3 just under 6:56 or so...I go back and forth like this for the first 6 miles. I'm feeling pretty good at this point. Some mild discomfort in my leg but I'm trying not to let it get to me. Mile 7 we start heading exposed right into the teeth of the wind. I have my first mile out of pace (7:13)...I try my best to draft but it's just not helping. Though, for the first 7 miles I'm still under 49 minutes...so I'm in good shape. Then I try to slam down a gel but nearly puke it up...the wheels sorta felt like they started to fall off at this point. The wind was breaking me down. My leg was hurting. Mile 8 was 7:20...mile 9 another 7:20...7:20...etc. I was fading...7:25...Hit the last mile and thought I still had a shot at sub 1:34...was reaching deep but could only manage a 7:16. With .1 left, my up-chuck reflex was starting to act up. Had to try to control my breathing. Crossed the finish line at 1:34:11...2 nice dry heaves at the end.

One thing I can say, this was my best effort under the circumstance and I can definitely feel good about that. It's going to take some time to see where this leg is at though...The only thing preventing me for really enjoying this fully.

Anyways, that's all I have to say about that... :)

 You better qualify for Boston before my slow ### does...
