DO IT!Post updates on your training runs. Everyone's here to help.
Roger that. Have a 5k "course" through my neighborhood mapped out with some nice hills and such. I have the Couch to 5k app and it seemed a bit... aggressive for day 1... 1 min jogging / 1.5min aggressive walking rotation for a starting point? Seem right? I'm not exactly a huge guy and I play a good bit of kickball/softball but I was sucking wind hard halfway through the schedule. Went out 2 days later and just did my own thing running when I could for as long as I could then walked till i got my wind back. ETA: this was really my 2nd time ever "running/jogging" for any distance... finished around 35 mins... with about 60% walking I'd guess. Also I have a hard time just slow jogging... GF tells me "That's not jogging, that's running!". I try to "jog" and it just sucks... feels totally un natural. someone said something about a natural stride/pace and it's tough to fight. Problem is I don't have the wind to maintain it for very long yet. Looking for feedback here.TIA.
GF is right. The key to this game is the vast majority of your running should be long and slow @ a "conversational pace". Meaning, you should be able to carry a conversation at that pace. Even the top guys are doing 80% of their workouts as LSD (Long Slow Distance).

Since you're just starting out, its going to feel really unorthodox and embarassing. Fight the urge to run hard and "get a workout in". All you're doing is opening yourself up to injury. Its especially important as you're first starting out. Totally forget about speed. That'll come later down the line.

I think the run/walk is the right approach. Focus the running portions on just being smooth and relaxed. Hell, I used to ask myself out loud if I was running too hard. If I couldn't talk outloud with out laboring for a breath in between, I was running too fast.

This is a game of consistency. Don't give up too soon. It takes time. Post your workouts here and we'll help ya out.

Gru is in at 3:26:54

Jux may have won the time battle, but I imagine he's hurting alot more right now. Gru bumped up the pace again at the finish. I suspect he knew he was going to hit his goal and saved himself for his next event...basically turning this into a training run.

Three of my friends I'm tracking had similair splits issues at the 30k mark.
I did the same thing BnB. Put in others I knew running and everyone fell off the table at 30k dramatically. Leads me to believe there were some tracking issues. Unless that's where it gets incredibly hilly and every single person slows down...

Damn...you guys are crazy. Shortened week he says...

What race are you training for again? Any marathons coming up?
:endorphinejunky:Training for a trail triple (2 weeks away). Half marathon, 10K, and then 5K in one morning. I did this one last year and had an absolute blast. I can't wait to get back there.

No marathons until the fall for me.
Boy, that's a ton of mileage you've been putting in for a half marathon. What's your goal time?
Nah, I'd be doing something pretty close to this (with more speedwork) if I was training for just a road HM....This isn't just a half though, its 3 races (22.4mi total). Since its a trail race, and a moderately hard one, I won't be sniffing any PRs. Going to go out around a 1:50 for the HM and then go by feel from there. Hoping I'll have more in the tank than I did last year and can run more even times for all 3 races.
Are all these races in the same day??
Same morning. :excited: The Triple-Crown 3-race combo--individual or team. A half-marathon for distance, a 10K for some up-tempo, and a 5K just for laughs = 22.4 miles all in one morning! The Triple Crown is scored by sum of finish places (not combined times) among TC runners only--low sum wins (tie-breaker rule: faster half-marathon finish wins). Please note the time intervals between starts; if you finish one race after the next race has already started, no problem--just grab some refreshments and head out again! The main objective is to finish!
That's pretty crazy. What were you times like last year? How many people run all three legs as individuals? You have any chance to place in your age group?
Here's the RR. Long read, of course. http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=302486&page=638#entry14336345I have a good chance to get top 3 AG this year, but little chance to win it. Top 20OA is the goal.
Good stuff. Sounds fun.

Grue's IT Band took a #### on him again. Just like at JFK last November. FML.

On the bright side, looking forward to having a few brews with the crew in a couple hours!

Seriously, though, thanks for all the support, guys. Boston and I are gonna take a break for a while.

Well...even with that...congrats man.

Congrats to all of the boast guys.

Way to hang tough. Drink up. You've earned it.

Got my first race of the season (3rd ever) on Sunday. I am very excited. Any tips? I remember getting gassed in the first mile last time out. Gonna try and pace myself a little better.

Oh well. I felt good through the half, but around 14 or 15 I suddenly realized I was in trouble. I slowed some and tried to watch my HR but by 21 or so I was toast. Those hills killed me. Had to do the walk-run thing at the end. Classic Boston rookie mistake, I guess. I'm not too upset, though. The effort was there but my body just couldn't take it. I think I'll stay in the flatlands for the future. Nice experience, though. I'm glad I did it even if I didn't get the result I wanted.

Bummer.Get well in time for the 50 miler.Which crew are you drinking with?

Thanks guys. I will post more details later, but basically my quads/hamstrings were tight from the get go and got worse right after Wellsley, but you guys definitely played a significant role in my decision to finish the race with whatever my legs would give me today, that and I kept on telling myself Jux and Gruecd was right behind me.

P.S. I just knew the commentary on here regarding my blowup was going to be hilarious and it definitely didn't disappoint

All the horses in the barn now, great job Boston crew

Can't wait to hear more later, for now, rest up and go have a few for the rest of us. Well done!!

You still did great. Nice work.

Blowup and still run sub-3 hours. That's something right there...Good job toughing it out.

By the way, I ended up with my 3rd best time out of my 8 marathons. Kind of funny and it shows how far I've come that a disappointment would rank so highly. Much of the advice I've gotten here has played a large role in that.

:tebow:

Great job all! So impressed by all you fast dudes who can even get into this race, let alone knock out some amazing times - good day or bad.

I started out with Couch to 5K as well. I followed the plan pretty religiously IIRC, and if I couldn't complete what it called for that day I repeated the day before moving on.

It absolutely took me a while to find a comfortable pace that felt somewhat natural Unfortunately for my slow ###, that pace remains my comfortable pace still today! :bag:

This might be a dumb question but why do they run the BM on a Monday?
It's Patriots' Day out there (third Monday of April), so most everyone is off work/school for the day.

BTW, I was tracking another friend, and his times held rather steady ...just a general slowdown over the final marks. I think the times we saw today were all unique situations. SteveC and Juxt started with bold, marathon-PR paces, but couldn't hold it. Grue's IT band acted up. Workhorse's toe (and its effect on training) might have affected his final splits - hope he's OK.

wilked gets the gold star for a very well-paced, huge PR! :pickle:

Congrats to all the racers! Boston is still the best of the best.

Agreed with others. Great job to both Steve and Jux. I feel exhausted just following you online so I can't imagine how you all feel. Go get some brews!
