Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

I left the music at home and it was actually a peaceful run and enjoyed the sounds of the neighborhood.

Next step is actually waking up for a run before work (leave at 5:30am) since I bet it's a very similar experience.
:hifive:

It's similar in the morning. I enjoy early weekend runs into the Chicago neighborhoods just to see the city waking up. Stop shaking your head, SFDuck. Duck, I will say on my long run on Sunday, while running half of it on a (paved) trail through a forest preserve, I passed one large buck chillin' in the woods 10 feet off the path; a doe grazing just a foot off the path as I passed by; and another spot where a doe and a spotted fawn waited for me to pass before they crossed over as though it were a four-way stop.

When I can manage to drag myself out of bed that early I always end up enjoying a run early in the AM. The calm of usually busy streets and neighborhoods + the sun just starting to peak out is very relaxing.

5.5 slow miles for me this morning. Legs felt pretty dead today. Will probably take it relatively easy before my 10k on the 4th.

gruecd - that shoe dryer looks sweet. about to order.

I'm the exact opposite. If I could only do AM runs I probably wouldn't run at all. I certainly wouldn't train. Absolute torture.

Agreed. I do it sometimes (this morning, for example) out of pure necessity, but I would much rather run in the late afternoon or evening.

5.5 mile trail run yesterday in 95 degree heat.

Today's WOD:

3 rounds

box jumps x20

dips x20

lunges x20

under the fence pushups x20

squats x20

pullups x20

knees to elbows x20

burpees x20

situps x20

100m sprint (backwards for round 2)

Total time 35:30

The pullups and knees to elbows back to back were murder.

After having to take a 4 day break tied up with family stuff, I've strung together 7 straight days of workouts:

Last Thursday: 2,500 yard swim

Friday: 5-mile run

Saturday: 3.7 mile kayak

Sunday: 4.25 mile kayak, 3-mile run

Monday: 3,000 yard swim

Tuesday: 5-mile run

Today: 2,500 yard swim

Knocked my weight back into the 150s for the first time since last September. With little time for the bike, I think I am going to scale way back on triathlons this year. I found a 3000M open water swim event the day after I'd planned on doing one of my annual tris that I think will be a nice test for the 5K swim in August. There is another swim/run weekday event coming up along with another swim event I do every year; 8am 1Mile Open Water Swim followed by an Aquathon at 9am (2K run/800M swim/2K run).

I haven't posted in this thread for a long time. I've just been putting in the miles consistently and trying to avoid injury.

But I got hit by a car tonight on the way back of a six miler. The car had been stopped at a stop sign so it fortunately wasn't moving very fast. I managed to avoid hitting my head and stayed clear of the tyres. A bit of road rash on my calf and palms seems to be the worst of it. I'm hoping it stays that way once the adrenaline wears off. The driver and witnesses were very helpful.

I usually try to make eye contact with drivers at stop signs. In this case, there were two cars stopped side-by-side and I was more worried that the one further from me would cheat the crosswalk and mess up my pace. So of course, the other car was the one that hit me. Scared the #### out of me but I consider myself one lucky runner tonight.

If I miss a few days in here it is unbelievable the amount of catching up to be done. Congrats to all of the racers in here. Some awesome training as well. Special congratulations to Koby  , that is awesome news. I have four kids and wish I had more. Kids are great!!!

I have been fairly consistent in my training. I am headed up to Flagstaff Az on Friday for a meeting. I am taking the family and making a mini vacation out of it. I am really looking forward to running in Flagstaff. Hoping to hit a trail up there.

Wow, glad to hear you're ok. Something we all deal with at one point or another and something I'm constantly worried about. I treat it as a "when it will happen" not an "if it will happen."

2Young - great training!!!

Eephus - scary incident. Yikes! We all fear that. It's one reason I always wear my RoadID ...you never know (even in the nearby neighborhood).

For me...the summer of squish continues.

Went out to get 6 in...5.5 was all I could take.

81/71 to start. 84/73 to finish...nothing like a low to high 150 suck index.

First 3 miles went fine...but by the end of the 3rd I knew the 2nd half of the run would be a struggle (gets a bit hillier plus the heat was starting to get to me as the HR creeped a bit).

Paces slowed...and I cut a half mile off the run to head towards the house.

sorry to hear

whenever there is a car stopped like that I go around the back of it whenever possible.

You know the old saying that you should wear clean underwear in case you're hit by a bus. Well, I had the raggediest pair on last night when I got hit.

I threw them away today. They did their job.

You mean they were CC's? (with the second C being Catcher)

Who wears underwear when he's running??

:goodposting: Running shorts have liners for a reason. Glad to hear you're okay, Eephus -- scary.

Not much to report on my end. 10 easy miles before work.

Out in Seattle this week for a conference. Monday and Tuesday were "holy hell my legs hurt" days. Got in one swim, bike, and run there on Wed. and Thursday (the hotel had a 25 yd pool - that is a new one). Nice and hilly there/ Nice place to be a runner, I'd think.

Today after the redeye I managed a slow 5 miler. Suck index 155 or so - I need gills.

Oh...and I wear compression shorts or C9 "performance" boxer-briefs and cut the liner out of most of my running shorts.

Hated the liner on its own...

Good day, week, and month for me.

PR distance this morning of 13.1 miles

PR weekly mileage this week of 25.4

PR monthly mileage this month with 86.5

While I don't judge, there's just another reason why I don't like running on the roads. Glad you came out of that ok, Eephus.

Speaking of trail running, there's that little race known as Western States 100 going on today/tomorrow. Unlike last year, it's going to be near record heat at over 100 degrees in The Canyons (approx miles 30-55). Should be some carnage out there.

Despite that, or maybe trying to bank miles before it gets hot, a pretty fast start so far. Leaders are through mile 10.5 in 1:32-1:35, about 8:45 pace. I know that doesn't sound too fast, but keep in mind the description of the beginning of the course: Beginning in Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, the trail ascends from the valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles.

Here's a pic from the top of that first climb this morning.

If you want to follow, it's #ws100 on twitter, irunfar.com has live coverage, and UltraLive.net has the official timing updates.

Now off to continue planning my 12 month training cycle in case the lottery gods are good to me in December......

Missed all my rides this morning - too damn tired from the redeye yesterday, I guess. So now I'm forced to watch the TdF. Poor me.

That and keep track of my friend Kyle (#211) run Western States.

AWESOME!!!!! Starting to rack up some mileage. I believe he's caught the bug ;) Had a great 10 mile trail run with a local group this morning. Suckex of around 148, was a sweaty mess 1 mile in, felt like we were running in a shower the rest of the way. Group shot & me and the leader. Love running with these folks, always somebody new to meet and just a nice, easy, laid back pace. Great way to start the day!

Sweaty speedwork for me late this morning. Hadn't done speedwork in awhile. Goal was 6x800 on the American Tobacco Trail where I do a lot of my runs now with 400m run rest. Not a trail in the sense that a lot of you run, more like a crushed gravel path.

1 - 2:50 (slight downhill)

2 - 2:53 (slight downhill)

3 - 2:54 (slight uphill - actually more of an uphill than I realized and this did me in)

4 - stopped short at 600meters slight uphill in 2:12

Then realized the suckex and uphill speedwork had done me in so I switched 5 and 6 to 400 meters

5 - 74 slight downhill

6 - 79 uphill

Sitting at 34.5 with 1 day to go for the week so I should get over 40 miles for the first time in awhile.

GREAT shots, you are so lucky to have trail like that so close to home.

Swim distance PR for me today. 5,000 yards (2.85 miles); averaged sub 2M 100s for the entire swim. Broke it up a bit versus doing it as a single set. Did 3-1500s and a 500 to finish. I have a mild case of swimmers lung. Not the full burn like when I was a kid, but the first time I've felt something like this in a while.

10k race tomorrow morning. I was kind of dumb to schedule this since my wife is out of town tonight. One thing to power through a 5k after a night of crappy eating and boozing. Different story for a 10k. So tonight I will be laying on the couch watching movies.

Looks like the weather should be somewhat cool tomorrow morning with only a slight chance of rain so hopefully can have a successful race. This will be my half marathon qualifying time(for lack of a better term) so I dont get stuck in the last corrrals at the disney half.

Whoa whoa whoa. Back it up. I'm running a half in September. Do I need to submit a qualifying time? It's the Naperville Trails Half and it wont be nearly as large as Disney

I doubt it. I think Disney does it because there are so many people running. Just learned today that there are no spectators at the disney half. My son is very disappointed.

No spectators? how can they even police that?I think on the registration for my half I put 10 minute mile, but I'm think I'll be in the mid to low 8s by race time. Does that matter?

Are you sure about the spectators, or do they charge them? I did the 1/2 a few years back and main st was wall to wall spectators from where we entered the park until we turned into tomorrow land. And, I would sweat a seeding time. I can't recall if I used a 47 minute 10K or a 1:48 1/2 but whichever, it put me in corral C. It didn't matter as things jammed up anyway less than a mile into the race. FWIW, I wish I had just run Disney with my wife versus trying to race it. We missed the chance for some great race shots mugging with characters, etc. Also, do wait in the insane porta-john lines near the EPCOT lot, you have to hike out to the start line and there are more out there with no wait.

Annyong You can line up wherever you want no matter what you entered at registration (although lining up in the front row might be a bit discourteous to those faster than you). There are no qualification times that need to be submitted or anything like that. Regardless, it's not a big race and thins out fairly quickly so passing isn't that difficult.

Thanks, so basically like any other non giant race.

Great training guys. Good luck in your 10k para.

Pretty happy with my run today with my 10k approaching on the 4th. Felt strong. 6 miles with 4 tempo.

Definitely different than when you ran as we wont even be running through the magic kingdom. Starts at 7:30 pm and animal kingdom and hollywood studios will be closed when we are running there. We only run in a tiny section of epcot and that will also be closed.

ETA yikes I guess it starts at 10pm

Anyone following along Western States? Almost 14 hours in and it's a race.
I left the house for 4-5 hours in the middle of the day, but otherwise I've been glued to my iphone/laptop/ipad. Timmy Olsen with the back-to-back wins, unbelievable time of 15:17 considering the heat they faced. He was pushed all day by 100-mile newbie (and 2:25 marathoner) Rob Krar, who finished in 2nd just 5:00 behind. And this marked the return to Western States of Mike Morton, who won in a then course record 15:40 in 1997 only to drop out of ultrarunning until last year, and he returns 16 years later to States...and takes third in 15:45.

Top 10 (and automatic invite to the next year) is still playing out among the men, while the lead woman is in 10th overall and has a pretty sizable lead with less than 10 miles to go.

I'm so obsessed with this race....whether in it thanks to some lottery luck, or pacing someone (whether Grue, BnB, or one of my friends), I will be back up there next year.

That and keep track of my friend Kyle (#211) run Western States.
Buddy finished in 25:54. Great, great race from him.

BnB - BTW this is the guy organizing the shirt thing that was delayed. Let's just say he is a bit distracted right now and the wait continues. ;)

Ran 4 miles in the soft sand today. Me and a buddy of mine took turns wearing a 35lb weighted vest. Fun stuff. 45 minutes.
