Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

Very cool report on your son, 2Young. Good luck to him. Wouldn't be surprised to see him be one of the varsity scorers (top 5 on team) this year. Keep the reports coming!
Will do. You and the other HS/College runners have been an incredible resource for me to give him all kinds of solid tips and pointers!!!
Glad to help in any way. You will have an advantage over the other parents at XC meets because you will be able to run around and see more of the race. See if you can see a map of the course ahead of time and you can often run around and pick spots where you can cheer other than just the start/finish. XC meets are usually set up better for this than road races.
This is my favorite part and we study the maps each race. I typically pull them into Publisher and add comments, such as the projected splits he is targeting. Showing his maturity, he has respectfully let me know the "rules". He wants me to find my way to each mile marker if I can and yell out split data only if the team does not have someone doing a good job of it (no cumulative time, etc). I can also shout at anytime if I see him losing frame, hunching forward, looking down, etc. Yesterday, he reverted back to a mid race head waggle that I hadn't seen since early last year. A quick, positive shout fixed this quick. The coaches are cool with the input (I asked) and there are 3 other (insane) dads that are way more accomplished runners than I doing the same. Friday's course maps seems to reveal that if I hustle just a bit, I can have eyes on my son the entire race.
Living the dream..........

Ran 6.5 at a 7:50 pace today. Also threw in some bridge sprints to add a little hill training. I intentionally ran during the heat of the day to help prepare for this weekends half. Forecast is calling for high of 87 degrees. I feel like I'm ready but really have no clue what kind of time I'll run. Anyone want to take a guess here? Bout to fire up the race predictor.

Race predictor says between 1:29 & 1:31. It probably assumes you've actually trained for the distance you're about to run though. :oldunsure:

Ran home from work today, 4 miles was on a sandy trail and over a creek. The other 9.1 on road. Pretty cool that it is exactly a HM. Just under 2 hours for a nice easy 9 min pace. I might do this as my weekly long run.

still training for ironman florida in november. did my longest run ever yesterday...16 miles. it was slow but wasn't too bad energy wise.
Very cool. I don't recall if you've said - do you have a background in any of the three disciplines that you'd consider to be your strength? As for your run, slow won't matter, but having that energy will!

sho nuff - congrats to your friend on his Ironman!

Da Guru - great job on the year of cross training and running success! We're going to need a new "buff daddy" category for guys like you and Hang 10.
My strength is the bike but nothing spectacular. I am hoping to complete the race in 13 hrs or so.

Humidity was brutal yesterday. Did my hill sprint cross training workout at the park yesterday and my biggest issue towards the end was sweat. Finished stronger than I ever have with this workout before, but I couldn't see anything.

What time is the gun? I'll say 1:34.

7AM

That's not a bad guess. I'm definitely in better shape than I was in March for my last half, when I ran a 1:34:12, but the conditions are going to be much worse.

In my Oly (which has gone unnoticed in here :sniff:) I used the Torhans for water and a bottle tucked away for gatorade. Worked well.
Sorry, must have missed the post during my recent lurking!! Great effort, especially on a hilly course. If it would make you feel better, while you didn't beat 2:30, you best my Oly PR by 13 seconds (dead flat course and a current aided swim). :P
FB notwithstanding, I should have acknowledged here, too. To make you feel really better, my Oly PR years ago was 2:42. Sand: Home of the 12:00 differenceTM. 2:30 takes a lot of skill in each discipline.

Hang 10, I'll predict 1:32:30. Conditions were tough for your beach run, too, and you were strong there.

Well I am reaaa-dy for Sunday! After a couple of rest days, ran 4 miles in morning heat at an effortless 7:53/mile, picking up the pace as I moved along. I kept in my slow breathing pattern throughout (inhale and then exhale every third stride). One of the games within the marathon game is to see how long I can stay with that pattern. When I do switch to 'regular' breathing (every other stride), it's a mental boost.

Looks like we'll be one day away from cooler temps, but the Sat night/Sun low is predicted at a decent 62. Sunday high will be mid-70s, but we start at 7:00 a.m., so the heat shouldn't be a real concern (for a skinny boy like me).

Shoot for 1:28. Then hold on for dear life to try to break 1:30.

I love this combination. LSD run last night followed by a recovery 20 mile bike this morning.

Question for those who have done IMs - if you were to do your first again, would you pick Chattanooga, TN in September; Louisville, KY in August; Wilmington, NC in October (not a "IM" per se, just a 140.6) or Cedar Point, OH in early September? This will be next year. I grew up going to Cedar Point every summer so it would be cool to go back there. Family would be more likely to watch in Chattanooga or Louisville, Wilmington is closer, flat, and I will have done the half this year. This may be the only one I ever do, a bucket-list event. I'd love to do one in South Africa or some other exotic locale, but the travel seems a lot to add to the event.

I am cut from a different cloth. Create a goal, go for it. I'd rather go for it and fail than stay conservative and wonder 'what if.'

My body apparently did not enjoy the heat today.

Set out for a 7 miler this morning. Got through 6 and the HR was skyrocketing...hit the wall...so walked the 1.2 home in about 14:15.

75/69 to start...ugh.

82/68 when finished.

Clothes felt like I had just came out of the pool.

Agree with MAC (when it comes to somebody not me).

Hang 10, have you had many double digit mile runs? I've read about your intervals and your 5Ks and 8Ks but don't remember you writing about stretching out the distance. (When I know more, I'll give my prediction.)

I ran 10 miles once the Sunday before last. I've run 7 and 8 miles a few times but definitely haven't put in many quality long runs.

I ran 5 miles before work yesterday morning. It was only 72, but the air was practically unbreathable. I did those miles at MP just for variety, but it felt more like 10K pace by the end. Today was 5 easy miles on the indoor (air conditioned) track. Tomorrow I'm supposed to do 10, and I'm hoping to have it done before the sun comes up.

On a side note, Monday was the first day of classes here, and half of our dorms don't have air conditioning. Termps in some of our dorms got into triple digits, so the university had to pack up a bunch of students and move them into local hotels/apartments. They also have been shipping in window A/C units literally by the truck-full, with 400 arriving on campus as of yesterday. Some of the local K-12 schools have been dismissing early. In other words, the start of the semester has been a complete cluster####.

1:33
1:36 due to weather conditions.
1:32:08

rewarded myself for completing the half with a new pair of shoes. found a good deal at running warehouse for the asics gel nimbus. I had tried them on at the running store before, but didn't want to shell out the cash. ended up getting the old model 14's for just over 70 bucks.

i was running in the new balance 890's, and while I liked the feel, they didn't hold up very well. I barely have 300 miles on them and several places on the soles are worn smooth.

70 bucks is a great deal. I am going there now to see if they have my size (XXL).

Edit: Of course not. Size 13 is unlucky.

I got some for 105.00 a couple of weeks ago on amazon.

I thought about 1:36 but I was quite impressed with his sub 6:00 last mile in his 8K last weekend. He seems to have some Energizer Bunny in him.

We also need a "yea" or "nay" on whether prosopis conquers the big hill in his upcoming race. I'm guessing the third time is a charm and he runs up and over.

Thanks for all the predictions. Man, I wish there was like a 1:30 pacer. Fastest pacer at this race is running a 1:45.

Also, has anyone ever thought about putting a spreadsheet together that had the best finishing times for each race distance for each new year? For example, like Koby's 5K might be the best time anyone ran this year, then Jux might have the best half marathon, etc. Might be cool to give everyone times to shoot for.

I'm thinking that I'm not much a threat to unseat Koby, Jux, or Gruecd. ;)

Got my 10 miles in before work today, with tomorrow being a day off. I was out there early and while the suck index was at 135, it wasn't that bad since the sun wasn't out yet. Now that I've strung together a few weeks at my normal mileage, I need to get some speedwork going and hopefully salvage some sort of decent result in a fall race -- I have three 5Ks coming up in September, October, and November and I still think I can PR again in one of those if things go well.

You might just need to find a obscure distance. You might set the mark for the 17-1/2K!

Last training run this morning before the race Sunday. Was my anniversary last night...went and had 4 martini's with the wife. 10K at 6:30AM this morning...felt like absolute ####. Got it done though!

Sounds like fun. I'll create a tab on the FBG Race Calendar. Can't do it from work, though, since we're blocked from accessing Google Drive.

Holy crap, dude. I can drink, but if I had 4 martinis, I would be an absolute bag of #### this morning. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'd still be in bed!

Of course, I drink straight up gin (Sapphire) martinis, extra dirty, of course. So that probably has something to do with it...

I predict not only a "yea", but that he'll feel so good doing it he will break out with a power skip and a whistle the last 50 meters.

Big shout to all of the racers this weekend, and to tri-man in particular, as he pursues his 2014 BQ.

After days/weeks of wrangling, I've pretty much decided against doing the marathon this weekend. Temps will be mid-60s at the start, low-70s at the finish. That alone would be do-able, but with dew points also in the 60s, there's just no way. Should be fine for a skinny due like tri-man, but for a big, heavy sweater like me, that humidity would be the death of me. I get this big hemi going, and it gets hot in a hurry; when the air is saturated like that, the sweat can't evaporate, I can't cool myself, and I overheat. Game over.

I'll keep an eye on the weather for the Erie Marathon on the 15th, and if that doesn't work out, I'll consider reneging on my pacing job and racing Fox Cities on the 22nd instead. If it's too hot at Fox Cities or if that ends up being too late for Boston, then I guess it's just not meant to be. Que sera, sera.

So now I'll probably run 10-12 miles on Saturday morning and then try to do one more 20-miler on Monday or Tuesday morning when it's supposed to be cooler. Then back to weather watching...
