Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

So this is my taper week and today was an easy 2 mile run. Mile 1 was 8:30 and mile 2 was 8:23. I couldn't believe I went that fast since I barely felt like I was jogging. Feel pretty good about my 8m/m goal pace.

I used El Floppo's "out and back" method to see if I could figure out what my first mile would be depending on where I was on my course after 5 minutes. Right on track for 8:30 and that's exactly what it was. to El Floppo.

30 minute tempo run tomorrow and then that's it until race day on Friday.

OK, for some reason, most of you seem trustworthy.

Does anyone have any opinion n Jeff Galloway Training?

http://active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1415280

Would it be worth 159 bucks?
Galloway's "Book on Running"...published in the mid-80's IIRC...has long been my running bible...and the only running book/training program that I ever used when I started nearly 20 years ago. His training theories worked like a champ for me...for my father...and for 1/2 dozen first-time marathoners that I worked with. I've "gifted" that book many times to friends who wish to begin running...or to build their running to further distances.Excellent book...well worth the minimal purchase price.

In a nutshell - Galloway proposed a "long, slow run theory" - at conversational pace for a marathon finish goal - and plenty of rest throughout the week!

I've no comment on this "program" that you speak of, but...Galloway is gold!

Good book, indeed. I also like Daniels' Running Formula by Jack Daniels and Advanced Marathoning by Pete Pfitzinger and Scott Douglas. These are quite a bit more technical than the Galloway books, but they're especially helpful in understanding the reasons WHY we train the way we train.

That guy is a genius! Bourbon and running is great combination, but it's best not to do them in that order  :D

thank goodness for Camel-backs and Fuel-belts... :lmao:

I don't know how I missed these... unbelievably cute! (and I do mean Mrs. Pigskin... the kids not so bad either, but Mrs.... wowza. Pigskin- I do believe you far outkicked your coverage with the Mrs... :banned: )But I'm disappointed... no aerobars on the 5yo's bike? And the tassles? Not very aero... VERY disappointed.

Man... I hope I'm still doing this stuff when El Floppolino (T-7weeks) is old enough for it- got kind of choked up looking at your pics.

I CERTAINLY out-kicked my coverage, and thank goodness my girls look like their mother!

:lmao: Approximately 5 Dad's brought their TT bikes to ride with their kids during the race. Nothing like bein in the aero position riding with your 4 year old and their training wheels :headbang: . One kid (looked 14'ish) had aero-bars on his road bike and looked a bit out of place. He did the older kid version = I'm pretty sure he did well.

No reason not to! We were floored when we found out how many kid-tri's their are in our State (TX). We have two kid tri's (and a great Kid Tri Club we just joined) in our town, and only 1 adult tri. FYI: you'll have no problem continuing tri's as they grow up. Tri-Man is just getting better, and a person in my Dept. has done a tri each of the last three weeks at the ripe old age of 63 (won his age division in two of them!). You and El Floppolino will be competing together before you know it!

Aleve - 24/7
Before, during or after? Or really 24/7 like you say?
I've been taking Aleve 24/7, but usually not right before or during a run, but I'm open to other suggestions if you guys have any experience with this stuff. No time for doctors with the race only 12 days away.

Try taking some before going out on a run as a test. :blackdot:

i really am pushing to do a 1/2 marathon this year. Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon here in Toronto was the 6th fastest in the world last year (all flat) so I think I'm going to register.. Sept 30th is the race which gives me 4 1/2 months to get there.. right now I haven't run more than 12k at a time do you guys think the extra 9km will be a huge problem?

Nope.Get on a program, and you'll be completely fine. More worried about what kind of time you'll get than finishing.

I don't think you will have a problem with that time frame. You are only talking about adding approximately an extra mile a month until the race. I would find a basic training program (Hal Higdon or runners world) and just stick to it. The flat course will certainly help!

Take care of that hammy, and I'd say absolutely not a problem. My first Chicago Marathon was in 2000: In July of that year I was on vacation with my wife's family when one of my SIL's convinced me to run the marathon with her. To that point, my average run was MAYBE 3 miles, and I'd done a few 10k races (literally less than 10 runs >6 miles total in my life). For arguments sake let's say that gave me all of July, August, September and about 1/2 of October to train... and I finished the marathon (4:59:47).

Yeah, you can do this.

ETA: my SIL bailed on the race 'cause she was working for the Gore campaign in CA, so I ended up running the race on my own!!

4 miles outside today - felt like I pressed a little in the middle and finished strong, but this wasn't an all-out effort and I still finished in 30:30.

Even though I was out at 7am it was already humid, which is good - I need to get used to running in any/all conditions for the race. Last year it got really warm/humid and I wilted like a hothouse flower before mile 5!!

No. 4 1/2 months is plenty of time for this.

Today was my first run since the marathon. I did 10K and deliberately left my watch in my locker so I could take it nice and slow. It felt great to get back out there and jog some of the stiffness off.

Nothing much cookin' here during the taper. Biked for an hour this morning, working on the big wheel but not pushing it. Easy runs the next couple of days, then a couple easy runs on the weekend, too.

Pigskin, if you ever need a babysitter, let me know - my daughter's ready to fly down there. I showed her the race pics last night and she just melted.

It is so damn hot here today.. 28 and ultra humid.. I think I'm going to wait till the evening to run.. and even then it will be a long, comfortable pace.

Thanks for the advice about the 1/2 guys.. especially the links to the training guides. They will be become very useful!

Congrat's on the :o taper, and best of luck to all running next weekend. We can always use another babysitter = send her down! Although I'd like to plan a summer race in WI in the near future, as most of my family lives there = she could sit, while you, I and my wife run a tri  :moneybag:

Fixed for those of us in the US...

Getting my knee operated on in three days. Will be up and at em again. If this really goes well I might, just might take up biathlons, but I can't see any way I get back into running full time until I'm rehabed 100%.

 ... what more could you want out of your kid? Moxy without limit.... I love it!
Yah, moxie, that's my daughter. :D Now that I think about it, I'll have to ask her if she's planning to break the marathon record during the 2012 Olympics...right after she wins the gold in gymnastics. :loco: I wouldn't put it past her. That's how we got on this gymnastics kick...she watched the 2004 Olympics. No, really, I mean she watched the Olympics. She didn't just wander into the room now and then while her mother and I were watching, and she didn't just show up for the event finals. She watched just about everything. She watched the opening/closing ceremonies, she watched the Women's Marathon with me, she watched the minor events on Bravo and MSNBC that few people watch. She watched the Equestrian events..."I wanna do that!"...she watched the pole vault..."I wanna do that!!"...fortunately she really only got a burr under her saddle for gymnastics, tho I'm sure she could do anything she set her mind to. She still mentions the O-word ("Olympics") every now and then, so I'm probably going to have to sit down with her coach here in the near future to map out a strategy. She's taking classes at the YMCA here, and I believe they only go up to level 7 (Olympic class = level 10), so I'm probably going to have to get a mortgage on my mortgage and a couple more jobs and find her a private coach. I'll be sure to offer an FBG discount for her autograph. :D

ETA: she's pretty much the senior gymnast in her class now (replacing the previous 'gymqueens' as they've aged and moved onto other teen pursuits), and she's developed a bit of a swagger. Amazing what a bit of confidence and ability can bring out in a person. Here's yet another reason to find her another gym. We've always had to challenge her academically, now it looks like we'll have to do the same athletically. She's nearing the top of this ladder (her current gym), so a new gym should provide better gymnasts for her to climb over.

Awesome! The first step is to make a goal = not a bad one to start with!
Yeah, but it's *MY* goal. I wanna be the first to break two hours!! :whine: :tantrum: :pout:  :D

I have to share some pic's of my daughters' first tri. The photog's did an amazing job of capturing images from the day. While our 2 year old (and 3 weeks) really didn't know what was going on, our 5 year old could not have been more determined, or have had more fun. To say I'm a proud Poppa is putting it lightly. Here are some of the images:

5 year old just flying on her Princess bike!
:loco: :lmao:   What? No Aero bars? No full disc wheels? Come on

Awesome Culdeus! It's great to see you in Ol' Army attire. Best of luck w/ your surgery and recovery. Is that your new bike, and is it a Bottecchia? If so, any review of it for us?
Yeah, that's the bike as it shipped stock. Haven't done anything with it. Someone asked me if I paid 4000-5000 for it. I laughed. Having the fully indexed shifting on the rollers was  I'm gonna change the wheels out just as soon as I scrape together the scrilla. Still considering changing the frame, but not sure to what. I'm gonna see how things are after I get the knee fixed and if it feels real strong I might blowout. There are some nice steel colnagos on ebay right now that I'm watching.

Do you know how to cross-country ski or target shoot? Sorry... couldn't resist- it's "duathlon" for no good reason (other than "biathlon" was already taken).Best of luck with the surgery, C- getting it scoped? Any idea what the turnaroudn time is for you to get back in the saddle?

IM Wisconcin 08'... cornhole. :)

15:00 out, 15:25 back... Slow, uneven, hot, uncomfortable and heavy.

Everything's shot to hell, including my pacing which used to be ironclad. Starting at square 1 all over again- but it's better than sitting on my fat ### at Square 0.

IM Wisconsin 08'... cornhole. :D
Why not? If you recall, the intent of this spring marathon is to see if I can train adequately and perform decently in a marathon. If so, and if my August 1/2-IM goes relatively smooth, then I plan to commit to an IM for the fall of '08. Those races in the midwest (Wisconsin, and now Louisville) fill up immediately, so I need to know by August or so if it's a realistic goal. But then again, Schmegma (and gruecd?) might get me all liquored up in Madison the night before the marathon on the 27th and I'll spend the whole race running from porta-potty to porta-potty.

Yeah- all the official IMs fill up the day they're available- in a matter of hours, really. I know JoeB backs me on this- but IM Lake Placid is a really beautiful race- and challenging (the most vertical gain on the bike of all the IMs) yet forgiving (the Mirror Lake swim was the easiest swim I've done, despite the distance). I've heard great things about IM WI too. That 1/2 IM in Novascotia looks really intriguing to me as well...

(edit- there are a bunch of "unofficial" IMs that get a lot of love from racers- Duke, Vineman (in Napa, CA) come to mind- and those, at least by 2005, had spots open until raceday)

We'll see how my body holds up trying to get back into shape. There's a couple of 1/2 IMs in the fall I might try to do if I can back on the bike and the knee and foot hold up. Plus the NYC Marathon. Plus having this kid might screw up my schedule in unforeseen ways- although I'd like to keep the training going.

More than a year ahead of time, and I'm already :lmao:

If she really shows promise someone should start a FBG Olympic fund for her. It would be sweet if FBGs FFA was an official sponsor of an Olympic athlete.

For the cyclists...

10% off all orders at NASHBAR.com through May 21 with the code: MAY843

They're also having a huge one-day only sale today on a lot of their helmets. The helmet I use (Giro Monza) is only $49.99 vs $99.99. Good range of high-end (giro atmos, pneumo) to low end helmets available...

Man, if we're all still hangin' together several years from now, we'd be a real motley crew at the Olympic venue, cheering on lil' RoarinS.

Yeah, about that....Fortunately, we got a great deal on a new house, and we're closing on the 31st. I'm running Green Bay this coming weekend, so unfortunately I'm going to need Memorial Day weekend to get ready for the move. My sister has always been a great supporter of mine, so I feel bad that I won't be able to watch her run, but there's not a whole heck of a lot that I can do about it.

I'm sure I'll be "talking" to you guys before then, but best of luck at Madison, and have a beer for me. :wall:
