Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

It sure is good to see all my long lost running buddies still checking in here. I have been lurking for a while, but wanted something positive to post before I re-entered.I have made the decision to run a half marathon this spring, and my sister-in-law will be running it with me. I have been following the Hal H beginners schedule for the half marathon. With the run still 3+ months away I have not been completely faithful to the schedule, but it is getting me running 4 times a week. I just finished 7 miles this weekend, and am amazed at the progress I have been able to make in the last month. I have 2 friends that are going to try to run marathons this summer, and the thought has crossed my mind to give it a try. Baby #3 is due in April, so I am really wondering if this is the best year to set such an agressive goal for myself.
You are already on your way and I think it is doable. I coached little league 3 to 4 days a week, played team kickball and traveled a bunch for work and still got it done this past summer. The best thing I read was not to skip your long run each week and don't try and make up miles if you miss a day, just pick u on the schedule where you left off. Where are you running your 1/2?
I live in the Twin Cities, but I think I will be running in a race in WI. My SIL has one picked out and I am looking into it.

During church weeks, I skip the paper.
 When isn't it a church week? Meeka, welcome back! I'd chime in and say this summer might be the best time for the marathon. Your baby will do a lot of sleeping through the first months, which will afford you some time to get out for the long runs (I like the HH sequence of a moderate, strong run on Saturday and then the pure long run, on tired legs, on Sunday). Sure, you'll be rather sleep-deprived, but hey, if Floppo can do it ...

Of course, in a few years, your races can be family events, ala ~liquors and his family. That becomes special as well. Wait long enough, like me, and your child will be driving and can take care of the drive home.

With a 2 year old, that loves to be loud, when others are quiet, and daycare not offered every week at our church, we feel as if we're doing the other members a service by not being there all the time :deadhorse:

Thanks Tri-man. Right now both of my boys (4yo and 21 months) are in bed by 7:30, so if I need to run at night it is pretty easy to hit the gym after they are in bed. The baby will throw in another wrinkle, but my wife is very supportive. I have really like HH's half marathon schedule, so that is probably the first place I will look if I decide to try the marathon.I do look forward to being able to run in events with my kids. Hopefully they take to running a little earlier in life than I did.

Race Report, sort of, I ran a very cool 10K tonight out of the local Hanson’s store near home. It’s the same Hanson as the Hanson/Brooks Running Project. It was a free, fun run to look at Xmas lights around this area. The conditions were a bit miserable (rainy & around 34 degrees), but it still drew a crowd of around 30 people. Both Keith & Kevin Hanson were there to run with the group. I would not have recognized them if I hadn’t read the Runner’s World article about the project. I was talking to Kevin about the crappy Lions loss this week and he stated he was in an airport bar watching the game from DFW as he was down there to watch Brian Sell (2nd place US Marathon qualifier) run 63 minute ½ marathon  this weekend down there (although this does pale to Ryan Hall’s 59 minute ½ in Huston earlier this year).

I ran with a buddy of mine and we had a good run for the conditions. I didn’t track the time exactly, but we did it close to 52 minutes, getting caught by 2 traffic lights. The Xmas lights were fun to see and they turned at Art Van’s house (of Art Van furniture), which is always awesome. Back at the store they served pizza & pop for the runners. They do a ton for the local runners and today just upped my appreciation. It was fun to hang out with a group like this. I think we finished near the end of the line.

On another topic, I got an email asking for seeding times for the 500 Festival ½ marathon in Indy the first week of May. They have 4 seeding levels for preferred time under 2:30. What was interesting to me, was that posting a ½ marathon time of 1:53 still put me in the 4th tier, which is between 1:50 & 2:30. However, running a 10K in 47:28 got me into tier 3. I don’t get it, but I’ll take it. With 35,000 runners, the closer I can get to the start, the better.

Nothing too exciting here. Took the day off on Monday, did six miles on the treadmill on Tuesday, and then PTTS'd the 8-miler I had planned for Wednesday. So I rearranged my schedule and did the eight miles last night instead, which really sucked, because I didn't have the extra time to drive to the gym, temps were in the teens, and the roads/sidewalks were snow-covered and slippery. Almost got hit when a POS driver rolled through a light while turning right on red. I was coming straight through the intersection from his right side, and when I tried to stop myself (to avoid getting hit), I slipped on the ice and almost landed on my backside. And then the POS had the nerve to stare at me like it was MY fault, so you better believe that I had a few choice words (and a hand gesture) for him.
:goodposting: this is my fear. i've been hitting the roads. it sucks. so far no close calls but i'm sure it's going to happen. not so much worried about the cars as i am slipping on the ice and busting up my tailbone or head.
80 degrees here today. Rode 2 hours this evening after the sunset and the temperature was much more inviting.

I put in 9 miles today, but the garmin distance disagreed with the mapmyrun distance. MMR had it at 9.08 and it measured 8.91 on the garmin, but I am going to go with the garmin distance. miles tomorrow, the 5 or 6 on Monday thru Wednesday.ETA: I just looked at my run log and I passed 1000 miles 2/3's of the way through today's run. :goodposting: :pickle: :pickle:
WOW that's a lot of rubber on the road. :lmao:

She's arrived.

And she's fast!!!

I'm currently in heartrate jail in addition to being banished to the small ring so I've been keeping things in check. That said, I did open it up for a mile this weekend on a rolling flat and maintained 34-36 mph w/o totally pegging it. This bike will be a huge learning curve as the set-up is aggressive and I'm not the most flexible guy. Lots of aches and pains as I work to tweak it in. Looking forward to slapping the Zipps on in the spring. Our first time trial is April 8th at the speedway.

Also, the 2008 Blood, Sweat, and Gears date has been announced. Free lodging and beer for any footballguys wanting to take part in this ride and I may even offer transportation from an airport if needed.

I don't get it why spend 3500 bucks on a bike that's meant to go 100++ miles for a 9 mile race?

a) Needed if you want to compete.b) $1500 to $2000 gets you bike where you still have to chuck the wheels.

c) I'm not married and like to ride fast. Think of it as a pack a day for 3 years.

d) I plan to ride 15 TT events this year, maybe as many as 20+.

Actually more than I was budgeting, but sometimes you just have to treat yourself. I'll still ride my cheap motobecane in the mountain events..

As mentioned above, they're collecting dust until April 8 or a practice ride or two the week before. I can don the helmet for you gb. Anyone care to get me up to speed on tubulars, especially what I might need to repair a flat?

Also l'm on the look out for a new road helmet. Looking for suggestions and where you might find a bargain.

Why begrudge our good buddy his insanely sweet ride? WTF?!The Zips are nice, by the way- and they do make quite a difference in your TT. A suprising difference- especially if your TTs are on a track with some protection from the wind for the disc. Damn, that's a sweet setup you've got. :jealous, but still worth a hifive:

re: tubulars- I've got them on my Zips (404s) too. Not the best option if you're considering repairing flats as they're glued onto the rim. For the races where I use them, I carry a spare that I pre-glue the night before so it's still a little tacky (enough to unfold, but still stick to the rim). Thankfully I've never flatted with them.

Oh- at the end of the season, or maybe even at the beginning (considering these are used)- make a point of re-greasing the hubs. I neglected to do this with my used wheels, and after 2 seasons the back hub imploded during a 1/2 IM. Don't be me.

Have you guys tried the hybrid tires (tubularesque for regular rims) or know much about them? I've been thinking about getting them for my training wheels. Of course, that would suggest I'd actually drag my fat butt onto the bike in the foreseeable future.

It's been a while for me- :hi: everybody. Hope everybody is doing well and staying healthy.

Not much to report on my end. Didn't get out running even once during my beach "vacation"... spent the whole time tending to the little demon-spawn or tring to get some sleep.

Work has been crazy -new consulting gig which uses a new CAD program so not much sleep between work and the boy. But I know I need to get myself back into some kind of workout schedule. Fortunately the new office is en route to the Y, so I'm going to try and get some swims and... ugh... treadmilling in.

I really, really want to get into a regular Yoga class toom, but maybe that's just the Namaste Yoga show I checked out on FitTV talking (or maybe the insanely hot yoga-chicas). Also pulled out the trainer, so I'll also try and get the biking going while the weather outside is nasty.

Went out for a quick 3m today for the first run in a long while... legs felt great, lungs felt like ###.

I did 5.5miles today in just under 49 minutes. That is probably the quickest I have ran that distance in. It was a rare middle of the day run and I always seem to run better early or midday. The after work, after the kids are in bed run fit well into my schedule, but can be a bit much if the day has been hectic.

culdeus - thanks again! I went out last night and picked up an indoor bike trainer at Sports Authority. After researching and checking some on-line prices, I ran it all by culdeus for final thoughts ...ended up buying a Blackburn Mag Trainer for just $135 with a coupon. They had the fluid trainer on sale (down to $230 from $300), but from what I'd learned, the magnetic trainer would/will be just fine. After all, I'd spent the last ten years using an old stationary bike that I first acquired at a rummage sale. :lmao: SO excited to settle into some serious winter bike training (and no, I don't mind the tedium ...turn on a ball game and ride, ride, ride).

Seeing the cross country coach tomorrow for some massage therapy and evaluation of the achilles.

only one last thought a trainer will just tear up your tyres. They make cheap tyres that are designed for the trainer. Pretty much rock hard thick rubber.

The one I've got is a "Continental Hometrainer Ultrasport" I'm sure there are others out there. They also puportedly are designed to be more quiet, but I call bs on that for the most part.

GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!!! :lmao: :boxing: :jealous: You're a couple months of Yoga away from flying!! Congrat's on the new wheels. I have yet to do it, but you almost have to get a professional set-up done on that thing. We have a couple of places in Austin that do it (tempted each time I visit them), and considering your investment, you deserve to be in the fastest possible position on that thing/rocket!

I'm still trying to decide if I want to keep my tri-bike, with a new road bike in the garage. Your bike makes mine look like a unicycle

Congrat's on making the leap. As you start using it, please post your trials and tribulations. After riding in 25 mph winds yesterday morning (first non-commute ride on my bike!) a trainer is sounding a bit more appealing. It will certainly beat your stationary! Do you have clipless pedals yet?

3mi in 28:00 last night.

Yeesh, this has been a :ptts: week from Hell. Forgot my wallet Monday *and* Tuesday, so I couldn't get gas for the car when the indicator went off. Slunk home on Tuesday (watching the gas gauge go lower and lower as we sat in traffic) to get the wallet and other stuff, then it was off to my daughter's orchestra concert at school. Six blocks from a gas station, it runs out! :wall: I manage to push it downhill for about a block, then it's back to an uphill leg. :crap: As I'm thinking about asking someone to push my car with theirs, my Dentist just happens to be passing by and helps me out. lol So with a little gas in the tank, I fill up at the station and then it's off to the concert. We get there just as the 4th Graders are finishing, and my daughter jumps into her place with the 5th Graders. :phew: Odd, she was the only one playing on-key.

Also on Tuesday, sans wallet, I wasn't able to hit the ATM to pay for a holiday luncheon at work, so I had to hit up my officemate (I hate borrowing money/stuff, cuz then paying them back is just one more thing on a freaking long to-do list). I also had written a check for my daughter's lunch card at school, but forgot to give it to her when I dropped her off. So, I had to make an extra trip (burning more of the gas I barely had) to turn it in at lunchtime.

So, with concerts and weather and hectic-ouscity (yes, as a matter of fact, I *did* just make up that word), I blew off running Monday (and then a make-up run on Tuesday). It's been cold here (for you northerners, translate that as "freakin' hot!!" :X ), with rain, so the shirt was well-represented on Monday (early-morning run? screw it, it's too cold...late-evening run? screw it, it's too late/trying to rain/etc).

I squeezed in a run last night, but the shirt was still taunting me. I'm just about over a cold, so the cold air played a little havoc with some lingering chest congestion. I still have trouble staying in a lower gear, so I ran too fast and burned up my energy too quick, as usual. Add on to that having eaten only a couple hours before and still relatively full (mmmm, spaghetti), and I ended up only running 3mi instead of the intended 4mi.

Damn you, shirt!! :shakesfist:

:ptts: :ptts: :ptts: :ptts: :ptts:

I borrowed a fluid trainer from a friend and have been on it twice this week. Very helpful for doing heart rate training, but very uncomfortable on the butt. Last night an hour and a half flew by while I watched WEC. I'll post my 6 week training plan later...left it at the other office.

10 minutes  edited to add, isn't that a little bit smaller than you're used to riding (55cm top tube?)
nope 55cm is ideal for me and what I've been on the last year. It's a very slightly compact frame which will help with the fact I have alligator arms. This assumes he doesn't shill me out of this which happens all the time. :scared:

yup outbid. Really I'd rater be on the orca than the opal. Opal is supposed to be pretty damn rough. That's what I'm camping on, but at the right price I'd do the ocra.

Tonights run made me appreciate having the Garmin 305. I just took off from home and ran at a comfortable pace, turned around after a couple of miles and returned home. 4.13 miles and I didn't even have to map it out. This was the last run before Sunday. I have been planning this run for about 8 months and I can't believe that the time is finally getting here.

I just took off from home and ran at a comfortable pace, turned around after a couple of miles and returned home. 4.13 miles and I didn't even have to map it out. This was the last run before Sunday. I have been planning this run for about 8 months and I can't believe that the time is finally getting here.
1:56:29, thats my guess, any takers?Meant to type I'm betting "time"

culdeus - thanks again! SO excited to settle into some serious winter bike training (and no, I don't mind the tedium ...turn on a ball game and ride, ride, ride).

Seeing the cross country coach tomorrow for some massage therapy and evaluation of the achilles.
I guess congrats on the trainer... ... I hate having to use the damn thing, but it beats not going out. I've never been able to put in much more than an hour on that thing.I can't remember the research I did when buying mine- but I do remember that it pointed me towards spending the extra bucks on getting a fluid trainer and not the mag... is it that the fluid is more adjustable, or better simulates riding on a road? Can't remember. I ended up with a Kurt Kinetics (my LBS got me a nice group rate) and it's been solid so far. Does a great job lately of collecting cat fur and lint  .

And yeah, Culdeus is dead on as usual- it'll eat up your tIre (tYre... ). I ended up going with more of a bruiser tire for the winter/trainer months when the roads are nasty with gunk and salt, and then tossing it when spring rolls around.

Anybody try Spinnerval DVDs? A tri buddy of mine really made a jump in his riding conditioning with them, so I've always been curious.

NYC Tri is coming up fast in July... now is the time for me to get my enlarged rump back in the saddle and pool, or I'm going to need to race it in disguise.

Great, put the pressure on. I can promise I will do my best, but that's all.

I didn't mean it as preasure at all and apologize if it came off that way. I recall you writing, I think, that beating 2 hours would be "orgasmic", this was just my misguided way of puting it out there that I think you'll even shock yourself. Now, if you just so happen to run the time I posted, I am thinking about parlaying it in to a gig on season 2 on Phenomenon. Have a great run this weekend!!!

Good luck in your 1/2 this weekend Darrin (and to all of the other racers). You're definitely ready. Remember, the world record for the 1/2 is about 58 minutes.

Yes, he will. Darrin, I dropped both your 10K and 10 mile race times into the McMillan calculator. Both project out to a 1/2 marathon of 1:53 and change (about an 8:38-8:40/mile pace). Now, you're more confident and skilled from those races and subsequent training. So that's an achievable time. That said, do your best. If you get tired (tyred?): (a) use runners around you as 'pacers,' (b) focus on strong breathing to reinforce and reestablish your rhythm, and/or © use any turns on the course as little accelerators to get your pace back (stride it strong through the turns and then naturally settle back into your pace). Pick out a mental image/thought or two or three before the race to carry you through the tough stretches. I wish I could be there to cheer you on!!!

You can Do it!!! Best of luck Darrin, and have a blast during your race

It's time  I'm up about 4 lbs. since Thanksgiving, and hope to maintain where I'm at through Christmas/New Year's, then lose 4 prior to running Austin in the middle of February. Then one more before riding in the MS150 in April

My current weight = 169

Weight Goal for 1/2/08 = 169

Goal for 2/17/08 (next race) = 165

Goal for 4/12/08 (MS150) = 164

I challenge others to post their weight and goals here, to try to keep us from plumping up (or getting puffy as my 2 yr. old calls it) over the Holidays.

:hey: (low fat, no butter)

weight? shrugs.

I've eaten less recently and started lifting and put on about 10 pounds since I started my base plan up again.

Right now I'm at about 160 or so and I feel like I could drop 5-6 if I quit lifting right away.

160 seems fine. I'll try to do the 150 at, oh, 150.

Speaking of, we should probably decide if we want to share a room or not.

I've got an order in for one of the first 705s. I'm pretty pumped about it. You should post your speed/hr stuff for the data geeks.
