Monumental Marathon Race Report
For this training cycle I attempted to follow the Pfitz 85 plan and did very closely for the first 7 weeks. Had a 3 week disruption in training due to the tornado that went through our town and some minor calf soreness. I had a successful Broad Street during this cycle, but that and the Bourbon Chase took a lot out me. As a result I couldn’t really follow the plan that closely the last 5 weeks, but think those races provided a fitness benefit. I didn’t run many VO2max workouts, just did my best to get in the mileage.
The hotel situation was great, very close to the start. We probably should have left a bit earlier for the race as the corrals were packed and not easy to get into.
The start was kind of a surprise, I didn’t hear an announcement that we were starting, and just saw the crowd moving. With the marathon and half starting together the first mile was the most congested marathon that I have run. There were plenty of runners ahead of me that had no business being in the front, and it was frustrating to see that I was running over 8 minute miles pace early on in the mile.
I was able to get down to goal pace and felt fine the first 4 miles with the only thing to note that I stopped for water around mile 3.
Around mile 5 I felt like I had to take dump, it was bad. I didn’t know if I could hold out for a porta potty or if I’d have to squat on the side of the road. This was a dark time, as I thought my race and chances of a PR were over. As the mile went on I was more and more uncomfortable until right before the 6 mile marker, I vomited on the side of the road. The runners behind yelled out “oh man”, as I lost everything that I had consumed that morning.
The good news was I immediately felt better and while constantly farting, I did so somewhat confidently not as worried about crapping myself.
I was kind surprised to see that I was a little bit ahead of pace at mile 7 with all that going on. I kept farting my way running at goal pace and decided I should try to take something to drink around mile 9. I had 2 gels in my pocket but I no interest in eating them, so I thought I’d try some Nuun energy drink. Almost immediately I felt like I had to crap again.
Those waves eventually settle down and I got to the half 15 seconds ahead of plan and I was back to confidently farting again (at a rate of 5-6 farts a mile or so).
Around mile 15 tried some Nuun again, and for a moment I thought I was beyond this GI issue. Mile 16 had the only hill on the course, I was pleased with how my legs felt here. Shortly after getting up the hill, I felt like I had to crap again and I start eyeing up porta potties. Around this time I hear
@gianmarco yell out my name from his vehicle, but I am in such distress that I didn't react.
The waves settle down again around the start of 19 and I decided I done attempting drink anything.
Mile 19 has a nice downhill and I have a new lease on life, I am not even farting anymore. My only minor issue is that I occasionally hit my left ankle with my right shoe and it's painful when I do it. You can see my bloody left ankle in these
pictures. Thanks
@Harris for taking those great pictures near the finish.
Miles 19-26.2 were the easiest of any marathon I have run to date. I was definitely concerned about having enough fuel/energy to finish this thing, I thought that at some point I’d fall off the cliff and bonk. The approach was to put in the minimum effort needed to stay on pace.
I remember getting to the 20 mile marker thinking it's only 10k left for the 10k thread. Hitting the 23 mile marking thinking, I might actually do this. When I got to the 25 mile marker I finally felt confident that I could increase the effort level. I got to mile 26 and I said to myself I not going to miss this goal by 2 seconds like Broad Street and hammered the last 0.2 at 6:02, along the way I see
@Harrishe yelled out something about 1 turn left. Judging by the pictures I think my mind was working a 10 sec delay as I didn't seem to react to him.
Finished in 2:54:40 with an average HR of 156, previous PR was 2:58:44 with a HR 163. Feel fortunate to get a PR on this day, the weather and course were ideal and played a huge part. The best marathon conditions I have ever run in. I think being 6 lbs lighter and the magic shoes were significant factors as well.
Post-race was really a lot of fun, I am so glad I got to meet you guys in person. A consistent theme on the day was that no of us could have done what we did that day without the support and what we learned in the thread here. I think it also helped that everyone there had a really good race and was celebrating it.
