Ran a 10k - Official Thread (10 Viewers)

Who has a Turkey trot tomorrow?

I have a 4 mile “Wobble Gobble” in Keene, NH (although I think it was 3.8ish miles last time I ran it). My 5K race pace is about 6:27/mile.  So I’m thinking I’ll go out at 6:30 pace and hold on for dear life.

It will be cold (22°) so that may slow me a bit.  (cue @gruecd complaining it’s too warm and telling me I should go shirtless.)
Ran 24:26 — 6:26/mile.

Went well, although the last 1/2 mile was on sidewalks which with undulations from driveways and roads, it was kind of annoying and I didn’t want to turn an ankle over something stupid.

Well, things didn’t really go my way today. I’ve never had an issue with my new headphones and of course today they didn’t work. I made the choice to shoot for a PR because I have two songs that really remind me of our pup we just put down. The two songs were ready for the last mile. I tried getting the headphones to work for about 15 minutes. Nothing worked and I started the car to leave.

I have a hard time adjusting when I plan everything out in my head and things go wrong. My current job has really helped me grow in that area. My wife begged me to just run, so I did.

I got to the line like 30 seconds before the start and couldn’t get to the front. I had to settle in behind about 500-600 people. The first mile was weaving in and out of people. Second mile was fine. The last mile would’ve been amazing if I had that music to put me in a different place. I think I could’ve PR’ed, but I was mentally out of it before the race even started. Still thankful for all of you and to come out healthy. On to bigger and better things from here on out. The songs will have to wait until my marathon. Hopefully they will propel me to a BQ.

Final time: 19:35

Congrats on the AG win despite all of that.

Tri-man probably thinks you're crazy that music should be that integral to your raceday plans, but I can totally relate.  The running and music get intertwined in some strange metabolic stew and takes you to a new place.

Can we guess the last two songs before you reveal?  Fall in Love Again by Anne Murray?  Friday by Rebecca Black?

An eventful weekend for me is about to start. HM on Saturday morning, and after (hopefully) collecting hardware, head home for the Michigan-tOSU game.

Sunday morning will be interesting. I'm actually preaching the sermon at church for what should be the first and only time.   The service is simulcast via FB, in case you want to watch.  You should be able to find a link posted just before the 10 a.m. CST start for Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church.  Pastor number is #1.  Split s/b around 13-15 minutes.

I’ll be tuned in. Wouldn’t miss that for the world

And for you newbies, he’s talking about the stone variety, not an iPad.

In fact, the only reason they’re letting him do the sermon tomorrow is because he actually grew up with Moses.
🤣 But watch it, mister, or I’ll send a plague of moldy cheese down upon ye.

Anybody have thoughts/recommendations on percussion massage guns?

Are they helpful?  Best brand?

We picked one up on sale at Amazon that is decent.

The two main pricy brands that I know of are Hypervolt and Theragun.

From what I remember reading about them, the main issues with cheaper brands is that they are louder, don't get RPM as high, overheat faster so they shut off, and ultimately don't last as long.  When I found the one we got, the reviews made it sound like those weren't major issues with it.

We've used it quite a few times. I think it helps sometimes. In the overall scheme, I don't think it makes a huge difference, but it can provide temporary relief and I think has helped get out specific soreness.

The one we got won't link to Amazon anymore. It was by a brand called Legiral. Normally was $129 and we got it for $89.

Those brands I mentioned above are like $300.

Anyway, we don't use it regularly but we do use it when we have specific tightness or a problem area. My wife is still having IT band tightness from the race and used it yesterday before and after her run.

Thanks for the info.  Those issues you mentioned are the same ones I remember when I looked into these awhile back.

They popped up on my amazon cyber Monday deals and I was thinking about pulling the trigger (hilarious pun!) on one...but I really dont know a ton about the brands.  And, I dont want the super cheap knock offs if they arent providing the power.

I went the cheap route vs the fancy$$ ones. I haven’t had any issue with loud, overheat or weak battery. It works pretty well on easy to access spots and packs a lot of power. Don’t use it much despite being plenty of sore so I don’t see it as vital but I should use it more I reckon.

So, as time passes and seeing how things are going for me, I'm getting more and more convinced I picked up something that affected me longer term, possibly Covid.

A little less than a month before our marathon in July, I posted how my fitness went south and it didn't make sense. After some time off, I got back to running at least a few times a week for a month and even after that time, every run was still such a struggle despite taking it easy. I was running slower than I ever did and could never get my HR much below 160. It was miserable.

Well, over the last couple weeks, I've finally started to feel like myself again. Like, how I used to feel just at baseline. I haven't done anything different. If anything, I'm still running even a little less than I was when trying to get back. But my HR is finally down in the low 140s. It feels like it should. My VO2 max on Garmin has climbed 4 points from an all time low of 44 to 48 in less than 3 weeks.

All this while being fatter than anytime in the last 4 years.

Just glad to finally feel comfortable out there and enjoying running again.

Glad to hear you're starting to get back to normal  .  That's a long ### time, but I can believe it if you did have COVID.

I'm still not back to 100%, but am not struggling with my breathing like I had been...so it makes everything 10x more tolerable.

There is nothing else to do but keep plowing ahead, so that should be the plan.

So, promised a better Turkey Trot report, but I'll try not to be too long winded.

Leading up to it, I had a bizarre injury out of nowhere - went to bed fine Thanksgiving night, then in the middle of the night I noticed it hurt to straighten my right leg if I bent it more than ~45 degrees at the knee.  This went on most of Friday, and midday I noticed that it hurt if I pressed just below the kneecap on the inside.  Felt fine during my warmup Saturday morning until on a downhill I had 2 or 3 sharp pains and thought that I'd have to bail, and then... it was fine.  Still a little tender to the touch, but didn't bother me at all during the race.

Like I said, it was cold and really windy, and I think it ended up messing with me a bit.  Had a surprise baby bear visit a few minutes prior, so didn't enjoy having to use the freezing port-o-pot.  My car was parked about 0.2 miles from the start, so I stayed in there as much as I could trying to stay warm.  A few minutes before the start I realized I had come to the starting line with my hat still on.  Quickly went back to the car, thought I had enough time but then they ended up starting the race early with like 10 seconds of warning.  So I was still semi-frantically making my way up the corral when the gun went off.

On the actual race, weaved my way through the initial stage (due to being caught too far back).  Thought I'd settled in, but man my head was just not in the right place for this race.  Didn't pick up the pace enough again after the first hill.  Passed several people strongly and put in a decent effort, but the thing was over before I knew it and I really feel like I left a lot on the table.  Pace splits for 1/2 miles + .11 were 6:28, 6:35, 6:38, 6:56, 7:00, 6:24, 5:08.  The higher ones were up hill or into the wind, so I'm less concerned about the spread than the fact that I probably ran every section too slowly, which the 5:08 without really feeling like I was pressing is probably evidence to that fact.  My annoyance with myself is somewhat lessened by being able to bring home a sweet frozen turkey breast, which I got for 2nd in my age group.

Onward!

If anyone is interested in going halfsies on Maurten gels, I'm open to it.  I'd prefer the non-caffeinated kind.  3 boxes is a lot and I'm not sure how long until they go bad (if they do.)  Anyone interested?
That's actually what I just ordered for the Mrs (and how I found the site).  It's a really good deal (and got a free water bottle too!).  Let me ask her when she gets home and we can go half with it if she doesn't want all of them.

I dont recall the date but they do go bad. Found one before Indy packing prob from a 2019 purchase and it had fully gone liquid.

I'm tempted to say yes, and I appreciate @gianmarco sharing the link.  But as I think about it, I won't be getting back into marathon training for another 30 months or so, so no need to pick up gels for quite a while.

What’s up you fast, dedicated, and in-shape  ifriends?!  I’ve been loitering in here, gaining weight, and running sporadically.  Ya know, my usual cyclical fall season blues.   :kicksrock:

But hey, being grossly out of shape I figured “why not” throw my 1 ticket into the Western States lottery?  Looks like I’ve got a 1 / 29,909 chance (0.003%) to be selected out of the 6,225 runners whom have entered.  So…anyone else here have ticket(s) and enter the lottery (or know someone who did) so I can send good vibes your way?

I think I turned a corner in my recovery a little sooner than expected. I had 6-8 weeks optimistically in mind for my return to running back-to-back days, but to my surprise my body was ready enough after just 5. I felt good enough after 40 mins Saturday to give it a go Sunday and physically I experienced zero additional issues. I even jogged for a minute amidst today's gym workout just to see if anything was angry and was problem free.

Don't get me wrong, I'm only at about 80-90%...but just 2 weeks ago I wasn't - and more than that I was quite a bit less for a day or two after each run. Gotta be smart the next few weeks, but maybe I can get near 100% by January...

I’m not doing a Turkey trot but I am planning a painful 5k sometime this weekend.  Want to see if I’m anywhere close to 20min(also trying to beat a friend)
Well my turkey day run gave me a giant blister on the tip of one of my toes, I’ve put in about 2000 miles since I started running about 2 years ago and this is my first blister, no idea what caused it.

ran today as it was almost healed and now it’s bigger, so annoying.

Schaumburg Turkey Trot Half-Marathon

1:36:57 (7:21/mi) - 1st in AG (out of 15); 73rd of 921

Avg HR: 157  Cadence: 186-188

The main purpose of signing up for this race was to keep me motivated to push mileage through the end of the year and get to 2,000 miles. A slightly secondary goal was, of course, medal mongering. Training since the October marathon has been choppy, but I did get in a handful of SOS workouts. I didn’t approach this with a particular goal in mind, though I felt 7:30-7:40/mile would be reasonable.

Prerace: Thanksgiving dinner and Friday leftovers were plentiful, but I played it a little cautious for the Saturday race. Saturday morning went fine. A decent night’s sleep, a quick bowl of oatmeal, the subsequent system cleansing, final packing and out the door just a little behind schedule for the 8:00 a.m. race. I arrived near the site at a familiar forest preserve at 7:15 a.m. …only to be stuck in a traffic backlog entering the preserve. One parking area soon after entering had many open spots, and I knew this was a half-mile from the start, which was good for the warm-up mileage, so I pulled into that. Easy jog to the start area; quick check-in; easy jog back to the car to strip down to race gear and put on my magic shoes. Temp was about 32 degrees with light wind …near-perfect.

I jogged back to the start area with little time to spare, arriving near the start around 7:55 a.m. Upon arriving, I hear an announcement that the start was pushed back ten minutes to 8:10 a.m. due to traffic and check-in delays. No problem. A little more time to warm up with accelerations and stretching, and over to the self-regulated corral area by 8:05 a.m. Annnnd we promptly stood around until about 8:30 a.m.!  That’s just wrong, and slightly dangerous in the cold, to keep the large crowd waiting due to the small number that arrived too late. I lined up quite near the front and next to a couple of 1:40 HM (7:38/mile) pacers. I figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to hang behind them and see how things developed. (They weren’t very good pacers. Their pacing wasn’t very consistent, and I heard from another runner after the race that they didn’t interact much at all with their smallish crowd.)

The course was a 7.3 mile paved trail loop through a forest preserve that I train on regularly. They added a late extension of four miles on a spur that I knew well, and an early extension that was new to me.

Miles 1 – 3

1: 7:43 …HR 139

2: 7:31 …HR 148

3: 7:22 …HR 151

An uneventful start. As mentioned, I hung behind the 7:38/mi pacers. I was a little surprised by the improving mile splits.

Miles 4-5

4: 7:18 …HR 154

5: 7:31 …HR 154

This was the early new spur. We had to cut across a field for 75 yards or so (which I’m aware tends to slow the pace) and then follow an access road to lots of forest preserve parking for various picnic spots. Midway into this was, basically, a roundabout. We had come in from the left, so I expected they’d keep us left, return us on the left, and reenter the main trail on the left. But nooo. The signs sent us to the right! Friggin’ roundabouts (amirite?!) This meant we had two crossovers – once on the way out (easy due to the small count of lead runners) and once on the way back (fortunately, still not too bad). As we exited this spur, while on the grass, those pacers ran straight toward the trail, forcing almost a ninety degree turn. I cut a more strategic angle and found myself in front of that small group.

Miles 6-9

6: 7:19 …HR 157

7: 7:16 …HR 160

8: 7:14 …HR 159

9: 7:12 …HR 161

Very nice, as I could just run a familiar trail!  But kinda weird …I kept thinking that the pace was too brisk and that I should back off a bit. I thought I was doing so, but the mile splits and overall pace kept dropping. Truly, the legs were full of running.

Miles 10-12

10: 7:18 …HR 163

11: 7:18 …HR 162

12: 7:22 …HR 165

This was on the second spur. I didn't feel like I was pressing on the pacing, but the pace stayed rather brisk. As I approached the turnaround, I amused myself my counting runners going the other direction. BTW, I was 90th at the 10K point and picked off 18 runners over the back half (one passed me). I wasn’t really monitoring HR as I normally would. I just ran.

Mile 13 and finish

13: 7:11 …HR 164

.1:  6:50 …HR 167

Early in this mile was the last ‘hill’ of the course, a somewhat long road overpass. After that, I knew I was in the homestretch and began to push. Just before the mile ended we cut across a grassy section before circling most of a roundabout and then 100 yards to the finish. One gal was in front of me, and I decided to go ahead and pass her.

A nice post-race feature was an awards table where they could confirm AG position and dole out the medals right away. Second in my AG was thirteen minutes behind me.

And with that, the race season ends! Having been in a position in May/June where I had to resort to walking due to hamstring tendinopathy, the year ended up well with Boston and this HM. I feel like I’ve got a few ways I can improve my conditioning, running form, and training, so I look forward to whatever comes next.

Contemplating signing up for Chicago just in case I want to run it in the fall.  I have a time autoqualifier.  Need to decide by 3 pm ET tomorrow.

Anyone else thinking about running it?

I highlight these two for a couple of reasons:

1. The first one is incredible. We give our guy a hard time for his age, but to produce THAT quality is effing great. I'm in awe of you.

Which leads to:

2. The next part I quoted. You are always looking to improve. I've mentioned this before as this is one of the traits I admire in you.  This is a quality I do not possess at the moment. One of my goals moving forward is to try and capture this with you as my inspiration.

You are one awesome dude.  :headbang:

So impressive!

I thought of you at the 5K, as there was a lady I recognized from previous races dominating the 60+ female category.  Her ~24 minute time won by more than 5 minutes.

I'll come down and cheer/drink with (or without) you.  I'll likely never sign up for another October race.  Odds of hot weather are just way too high.

15K race coming up on Sunday at 7:30am.  Weather should be really nice with a start in mid 30's.

Planning on fun running this thing.  Just the thought of getting my HR up on this course with the memories I hold will likely lead to me going off to the side and curling up into a ball.
