Schaumburg Turkey Trot Half-Marathon
1:36:57 (7:21/mi) - 1st in AG (out of 15); 73rd of 921
Avg HR: 157 Cadence: 186-188
The main purpose of signing up for this race was to keep me motivated to push mileage through the end of the year and get to 2,000 miles. A slightly secondary goal was, of course, medal mongering. Training since the October marathon has been choppy, but I did get in a handful of SOS workouts. I didn’t approach this with a particular goal in mind, though I felt 7:30-7:40/mile would be reasonable.
Prerace: Thanksgiving dinner and Friday leftovers were plentiful, but I played it a little cautious for the Saturday race. Saturday morning went fine. A decent night’s sleep, a quick bowl of oatmeal, the subsequent system cleansing, final packing and out the door just a little behind schedule for the 8:00 a.m. race. I arrived near the site at a familiar forest preserve at 7:15 a.m. …only to be stuck in a traffic backlog entering the preserve. One parking area soon after entering had many open spots, and I knew this was a half-mile from the start, which was good for the warm-up mileage, so I pulled into that. Easy jog to the start area; quick check-in; easy jog back to the car to strip down to race gear and put on my magic shoes. Temp was about 32 degrees with light wind …near-perfect.
I jogged back to the start area with little time to spare, arriving near the start around 7:55 a.m. Upon arriving, I hear an announcement that the start was pushed back ten minutes to 8:10 a.m. due to traffic and check-in delays. No problem. A little more time to warm up with accelerations and stretching, and over to the self-regulated corral area by 8:05 a.m. Annnnd we promptly stood around until about 8:30 a.m.!

That’s just wrong, and slightly dangerous in the cold, to keep the large crowd waiting due to the small number that arrived too late. I lined up quite near the front and next to a couple of 1:40 HM (7:38/mile) pacers. I figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to hang behind them and see how things developed. (They weren’t very good pacers. Their pacing wasn’t very consistent, and I heard from another runner after the race that they didn’t interact much at all with their smallish crowd.)
The course was a 7.3 mile paved trail loop through a forest preserve that I train on regularly. They added a late extension of four miles on a spur that I knew well, and an early extension that was new to me.
Miles 1 – 3
1:
7:43 …HR 139
2:
7:31 …HR 148
3:
7:22 …HR 151
An uneventful start. As mentioned, I hung behind the 7:38/mi pacers. I was a little surprised by the improving mile splits.
Miles 4-5
4:
7:18 …HR 154
5:
7:31 …HR 154
This was the early new spur. We had to cut across a field for 75 yards or so (which I’m aware tends to slow the pace) and then follow an access road to lots of forest preserve parking for various picnic spots. Midway into this was, basically, a roundabout. We had come in from the left, so I expected they’d keep us left, return us on the left, and reenter the main trail on the left. But nooo. The signs sent us to the right! Friggin’ roundabouts (amirite?!) This meant we had two crossovers – once on the way out (easy due to the small count of lead runners) and once on the way back (fortunately, still not too bad). As we exited this spur, while on the grass, those pacers ran straight toward the trail, forcing almost a ninety degree turn. I cut a more strategic angle and found myself in front of that small group.
Miles 6-9
6:
7:19 …HR 157
7:
7:16 …HR 160
8:
7:14 …HR 159
9:
7:12 …HR 161
Very nice, as I could just run a familiar trail! But kinda weird …I kept thinking that the pace was too brisk and that I should back off a bit. I thought I was doing so, but the mile splits and overall pace kept dropping. Truly, the legs were full of running.
Miles 10-12
10:
7:18 …HR 163
11:
7:18 …HR 162
12:
7:22 …HR 165
This was on the second spur. I didn't feel like I was pressing on the pacing, but the pace stayed rather brisk. As I approached the turnaround, I amused myself my counting runners going the other direction. BTW, I was 90th at the 10K point and picked off 18 runners over the back half (one passed me). I wasn’t really monitoring HR as I normally would. I just ran.
Mile 13 and finish
13:
7:11 …HR 164
.1:
6:50 …HR 167
Early in this mile was the last ‘hill’ of the course, a somewhat long road overpass. After that, I knew I was in the homestretch and began to push. Just before the mile ended we cut across a grassy section before circling most of a roundabout and then 100 yards to the finish. One gal was in front of me, and I decided to go ahead and pass her.
A nice post-race feature was an awards table where they could confirm AG position and dole out the medals right away. Second in my AG was thirteen minutes behind me.
And with that, the race season ends! Having been in a position in May/June where I had to resort to walking due to hamstring tendinopathy, the year ended up well with Boston and this HM. I feel like I’ve got a few ways I can improve my conditioning, running form, and training, so I look forward to whatever comes next.
