12th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2021

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Complete an Ironman distance race (IM California)

Accomplishments or PRs in 2021:

Santa Cruz 70.3 (6:32:12), Santa Barbara Tri (4:30:55)

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Santa Cruz 70.3 Springboard to confidently attack IM CA

A race or race training disappointment during 2021:

IM CA and the 5.44" cycle bomb that hit Sacramento on Raceday

Total training volume and successes during 2021:

Finding out that Ironman training and balancing life/work was doable

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

Swimming is great...open water swimming especially in the ocean is AWESOME!

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2021:

@SayWhat?Western States...amazing, incredible and soooooo inspiring.

Goal(s) for 2022:

After the IM CA debacle, we were given options to defer to a variety of venues. I chose IM AZ 2022 with IM CA in 2023. My wife is going to attempt IM CA 2022 and I will sherpa her for that. We have signed up for Oregon 70.3 in July. Mucho Kudos to everyone in this community within a community. You are ALL BAMF's and a source of inspiration not only for racing but for life. SALUD!!

12th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2021

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

This is what I posted at the end of last year.

The only goal I really have right now is mileage. Try and hit 100 miles a month at a minimum and go from there.

FAIL. Will end up with around 750 total miles.

Accomplishments or PRs in 2021:

None. I suck.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

None. Still suck.

A race or race training disappointment during 2021:

My running in general. No motivation at all. Just don't care.

Total training volume and successes during 2021:

About 750 total miles.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

Not sure. I'm in a bad rut as far as running goes, but everything else seems to be ok. I've just been having more fun hanging out and not being tied to a mileage goal every week. It's been liberating mentally and I'm not sure I can ever go back to racing. I'm going to try in 2022, but so far it's not triggering any kind of "want to".

My racing days may seriously be over. And that's ok.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2021:

So many of these this year, and I hope I don't miss any:

1. @gianmarco - breaking sub 4:00 at his marathon. Just following that day and watching him basically redline on his heart rate forever was exhilirating and painful to track at the same time. Was so happy when he crossed that line.

2. Mrs. Gian - two great races. The first one to qualify and then the work she did to give a big F.U. to the qualfying time and blow it out of the water. Really impressive.

3. @SayWhat? - Western States. What can you say. The guy just has so much talent and to go out there and just crush it is inspiring. Amazing.

4. @pbm107 - knocking out that marathon time while having to crap his pants for 26.2 miles has a special place in my heart. Cracks me up just thinking about it.

5. @xulf - executing that plan for your first marathon was just bad-###.

6. @MAC_32 - the guts you displayed on your marathon were incredible. To finish and to have the mental capacity for your boys is what it's all about. I know the race didn't go as you planned, but to knock out that time on that day and THEN have the mental strength to finish for your kids - wow man.

7. @bushdocda - an awesome execution on race day

8. @Steel Curtain - mr la-di-da just running about 47 marathons this year like it's no big deal.....jeezus.

These are the ones I remember. I'll add more as I think of them.

Goal(s) for 2022:

I'm signed up for a half marathon in early April. The way it's going right now I'm pretty sure I won't race it. Meaning, I'll still run it but it's going to be a long slow run. I have no desire to get fast again. (at least right now). I've never bailed on a race I signed up for, so at least I'll keep that streak alive.

So if I want a Garmin watch that's gonna have sufficient battery life for ultra-type events (specifically R2R2R), I want to look at the Fenix 6 series, right?  I'm looking specifically at the Fenix 6x Pro.  Looks like I can get it now for $494 on Amazon (with the Fenix 7 rumored to be coming out sometime next year).  Is that the one I want?

@Zasada@SFBayDuck

Yes the 6X Pro will allow you to download music to it, but playing said music really punishes battery life.  So don't count on using it for music on R2R2R.  At least not for the whole thing.
Yep, Fenix 6 Pro will give you plenty of juice.  As Zasada said, don’t play music or you’ll reduce the battery life down to something like 6 hours.  I had no battery concerns as WSER and that was 24 hours. I don’t think you even need to consider the solar either, unless you’re going to do something much much crazier than R2R2R (or you die in the Grand Canyon and want the rescuers to know when). Absolutely love my Fenix 6.  👍🏼

I'm talking to a coach this afternoon who's done it several times and actually lived in the canyon for a while.  Since this will be so different from anything I've done, I thought it would be good to get coaching specific to this endeavor.
So this chick has done R2R2R four times (and Rim-to-River like 90 times), and her fastest time is 9:50.   :jawdrop:

She said she's hoping to take a crack at the women's record at some point (currently 8:15:51).

I have the Garmin 920XT. Its probably 6 years old....its an absolute workhorse for me.  I think its now called the 935.  Battery life is 24 hours with GPS on.   So its a solid choice for ultras.

I typically need to charge my watch every 10 days....maybe every 7 days during my heavy training periods.

I looked quickly and see its on sale on Amazon But no idea if this is some shady outfit. Not on sale on Garmin.com

I'm assuming the sucking sentiment is mostly in jest.  And to most normal people, 700+ miles in a year is a lot of running!  For some people in here it's like 10 weeks, but they are crazy BMF outliers.  I know our resident recumbent-bike loving doctor has touched on it in the past, but there are all sorts of reasons to run.  I think yours is mainly to stay healthy physically and mentally, and it seems like that's mostly working for you.  That's mainly mine as well, although I often find myself waffling between trying to set PRs before they're no longer possible and trying to keep this is a fun hobby that reduces rather than adds stress.  Hopefully you can be comfortable with the goals and reasons you choose.

All of this.

Except it's an elliptical bike.

So ..don't sweat it!  It is OK.  I know you feel pressure when this circle of friends is generally a bunch of running (and biking) nerds/freaks/studs. But you're doing such an enviable job of focusing on your family and supporting the kids' activities.  Maybe it's a handful of years before you free up the time to run regularly again ..or maybe not even then.  Either way, for now, we're just glad to have you here where we can enjoy your comradery and friendship.

1. @gianmarco
Fwiw, I’m 100% with you here. I’ll participate in events but my “racing” is on hold. At least for running. I haven’t been motivated to run in a long time.
but just stay healthy, running is part of that, it’s not the end goal itself.

I had planned to finish my monthly HM this morning but there’s a tornado watch in effect until 11 so that’s not happening.
SO, to the garage I go. With family coming down next Saturday for our soon to be 11yo, and Christmas the week after, and not taking any leave over the holidays I’m not entirely sure when I’ll get the last one in  🤷

worse, the major local race, the rocket city marathon is canceled. They might still do the HM but that’s TBD. Gotta feel for the runners who trained right for the RCM.

12th Annual FBG Year-End Report - 2021

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

To get healthier and stay healthy.  No real mileage goals, but the monthly HM has kept me running when I didn’t really want to.

Accomplishments or PRs in 2021:

5 mile swim, just finishing that ##### was enough.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

See above.  Also, actually staying on course for the goose pond island HIM this time :)

A race or race training disappointment during 2021:

Not doing the run leg of the rocket city tri.  Which was the right call but sucked (won the aqua bike instead).  Adding around 45 seconds per mile to my Zone 2 training and HM pace.  But that’s not all that surprising.

Total training volume and successes during 2021:

I’ll cross over 1,000 miles running before the end of the year.  Project to hit 150 hours running, 115 hours biking, 75 hours swimming.  I’ll push to get 350 total hours.  If I include walking the dogs that probably doubles.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

I have a love hate relationship with running.
I’m happier just staying healthy.
tri is life.
While not in crisis mode, I’m definitely feeling the midlife, WTF am I doing now vibes.  I tell myself a large part of that is just still adjusting to staying in one place, this is the longest I’ve been at one place since before college.  I have no intention to change that but I do feel stuck in a rut.

Primary memories of other guys’ training, races, or life experiences in 2021:

I’ve absolutely sucked at keeping up in this thread this year.

Goal(s) for 2022:

health is key. Improve my strength.
The only races I’ve signed up for at this point are:

1. oak barrel half in Lynchburg in April, I’ll probably keep doing that over the years,

2.  Goose pond island HIM in May. Love this small race.
3. Rocket city tri in august. My absolute favorite race, hopefully I’ll be able to run in it next year.

I’ll probably add a couple local tri, and I plan to do more with the local clubs. That  may help get out of my rut.

When I have more time, please remind me to post about my Austin bear attack.
I got a few minutes now, I’ll try to get this in.

I changed jobs, today is my first day. I flew into Austin for my orientation, I’ll be here through Thursday.

Looking at Austin running the Colorado river looks to be a thing. The scenery reminds me of the running the Charles River in Boston. Adding to that, the weather looks amazing this week even if this morning was a chilly 46, it was gorgeous.

Woke up in the hotel, got moving. Has a nice sit down and I though all my business was done. Got some Starbucks and then got on my way to the run.

For the run, I had planned on an easy 4 miles as I didn’t know the area at all, it would be like 630am and pitch dark. Really a pretty morning, you can see a photo I took on Strava.

All was well up till approx mile 2.5 I felt it. I had hoped it was gas since I already had a solid sit down. Of course not. At this point I started looking for options.

Not 50’ on my left I started passing a drive in theatre. I’m like, BINGO. Low and behold 100 yards from me were a dozen ports potties. I LOVE AUSTIN. I get up to them and notice there is a metal wire running through all of their locks. I’m like WTF??  Who does that along a running trail. Selfish pricks.

At this point I am at an underpass of a hwy. My thoughts are there has to be bums around here who have layed out the land. Nope nothing. I start walking.

You know the drill, 50 yards this way, nothing.  50 yards this way, fence. I decide this is hopeless and cross back to the city side of the river. Still no joy.

What’s worse is it’s getting light. More and more people are around, and this bear is about to pounce. I start getting nervous and notice a ravine covered in brush. There is a path down there and I’m thinking no one will see me. I start my creep down there.

I find and excellent spot, covered around by brush. There is also a dumped concrete section blocking my view. This has to be as good as any. I drop the trough, smash the steam, pull out the spare tissues.  OMG - what did I eat last night?

Make my way back up. Complete success. I am 100% proud of myself.

Take a left away from the ravine and not 20’ away are custom built bathrooms. Like 10 of them. All the runners are going in and out of them looking refreshed and stress free. As I run by I give these bathrooms the proverbial but squeeze. THANKS AUSTIN!!?!?!!

One thing I've thought about recently is how this thread is not a particularly easy place for a new runner to engage.

That's not to say we aren't welcoming or kind, because we overwhelmingly are!

However, we talk a ton about running a ridiculous amount of miles (and I'm guilty of it since I have the second most miles in 2021 in this thread and already planning 3-5 marathons in 2022).  For a beginner who is thinking about trying to work up to a 5K, this is a daunting place to start that journey.

I wish we could make it easier for those less intense runners to engage here.

Congrats.

Enjoy your visit, loved running in Austin over the summer. Bunch of different loops around the river/crossing the bridges. You can just orbit around those bathroom rest of the time in town.

For me, having other new(ish) guys to running in the thread at the same time as me made a big difference.  @gianmarco and @The Iguana (who is that guy?), especially.

We don't have new guys in the thread lately, which unfortunately becomes more of a vicious circle.  New guys don't have anyone to relate to (other new guys) and thus don't join the thread.

Any way to edit a run that had wacky gps and pace?  My estimated best efforts on 5k and shorter are wrong bc of a bad reading.

:lmao:    :(

Congrats on the new job!  Will you be based in, and moving to, Austin?  If so, for swimming: Deep Eddy is wonderful - a long, cool, spring-fed pool.  I thoroughly enjoyed a swim there years ago.  I didn't get to, but Barton Springs is another solid option.

A title change would help ...something that specifically extends a welcome to new runners.  ...If they're on Strava.  And own a shovel.  And have a body expulsion story (puke or poop).

When is your next race? You were really efficient on your 20 miler this weekend and then were able to run close to 11 the next day fairly quickly. If you run a marathon anytime soon you're going to crush your PR.

You can call it whatever you wanna call it, but it's always gonna be "the 10K thread," just like the Brewers will always play in Miller Park...

Here's the "Strength Imbalance Evaluation" that I have to do for my R2R2R coach tomorrow.  Thought you guys might find it interesting or might even want to try it.

I'm already chuckling at the thought of the single-leg forward extensions.  "Extend right leg in front of you...as straight as you can...as close to horizontal as you can lift."  ####, I'm not even sure I can make 45 degrees...  :oldunsure:

Most of these are part of my current regimen, but that single leg forward extension can go #### itself.

Me reading that (not even trying it yet)  :bag:

So much work to do.
