Contemplating MAYBE pursuing a charity entry for London next spring. I'd go the Marathon Tours route, but I'm having a hard time accepting how much they make you overpay for hotel rooms...

I'd want to run for a US-based charity so that people's contributions would be tax-deductible, and there are only a handful of those that get entries. One is PAWS CHICAGO, the Midwest's largest No Kill humane animal shelter. Fundraising spots are first-come, first-serve, and the fundraising minimum is either $7,500 or $8,500 depending on whether I'd commit before or after the London lottery closes.

I've never done the fundraising thing. Let's say I commit this week, and I'm willing to make a $1K donation of my own; how easy would it be to raise $6,500 over the next six months?
I don't understand why you wouldn't just go tour operator. The tour operator I used, you can go for $2500 includes race entry, 3-4 nights of a hotel right at the finish, a meal or two, bus to the expo, etc.

You do the charity with $1000 of your own money to start and then you gotta raise all that money. Sometimes, you still need to pay for the entry fee and you still need to pay for a hotel.

Just look at all your options.

Did you go solo, or did your wife go along? It’s in the second scenario that you really get screwed.

Wife came along.

Even though I'm not running much lately, figured I'd still pop in, say hi, and say how awesome it is to see what some of you are doing with your training. Always makes me happy to see.

Also, figured I'd throw a little tip in that is semi-running related.

Me and my clothes used to smell horrifically after I'd run. Probably two years ago, I stopped using fabric softener that I thought would make them smell better. It turns out it was locking smells in and only got worse with time. Instead, we've switched to using plain white vinegar and putting it in the softener compartment.

Clothes have never smelled better. All of them. The Mrs even commented about it after runs that they don't smell before they are even washed.

So, if you use fabric softener, I'd strongly suggest to dump it and try using vinegar instead for a bit and see what you think.
I've been patiently waiting for some kind of update from SOMEONE in this thread about making the change and... crickets.

You guys disappoint me sometimes.

Does it make you feel better that every time I wash my running gear, I think about getting vinegar to use in the wash, and then remember that I don't have any?

My wife does my laundry. No way I'm telling her how to do it.

No.
Go buy vinegar.

You have a chance to be a true household hero and you're just pissing away the opportunity. Sack up, tell her the revelation, and when it works and she loves it, you can thank me later for the future repayments you'll get.

I mentioned it to my wife at the time and she snapped back with "I don't use fabric softener."

I didn't bring it up again.

You like to sit in your garage and drink beer anyway. What's the worst that could happen? She sends you to the garage for the weekend? #winning

I Ray Barrone'd laundry more than a decade ago and have never been asked to do it since. I would be out of my ******** mind if I made such a suggestion.

Been doing it this way (because it’s what my wife prefers) for a decade or more. Cheers! :suds:

I'm trying this out right now. And shame on all you guys stuck in the 1950s that can't help out with laundry and stuff. For shame!

I will say, however, that I just did this on my own without informing my wife. The load is mostly all my running stuff but not quite all. If this doesn't work out, @gianmarco, I might need a place to stay!

;)

Welp, Chicago Marathon in 3 days. The Mrs. is running it.

Weather looking pristine. Low-mid 40's to start, mid 50's by the end. Only issue is some wind, but I have no idea how the direction of it will affect the race.

She's bummed that she had no idea that NYC had a qualifying time and she missed it by 38 seconds in Indy and could have made that up had she known. So, the goal at this point is to get in under 3:38 which she did in Indy a year ago. She's had a pretty solid training cycle (even though she always feels like she hasn't) so I think it's possible for sure.

Looking to meet up with @tri-man 47 , @Juxtatarot , and @Brony to spectate/festivities and can't wait.

Oh, and joined a "team" for the Berlin lottery. Me, the Mrs. and @gruecd looking to keep up the Berlin marathon tradition in this thread for 2023.

Oh, we can help out. I just played the long con.

When we were first living together she had this nice sweater. I "accidentally" washed it and shrunk it. I apologized profusely and it cost me a sweater. But it gained me a lifetime of not having to do laundry.

Booyah!

Reminds me of a friend of mine who hates wrapping Christmas presents. Did it every year without complaining, but intentionally did such a crappy job that eventually her husband just insisted on doing it himself.

NICE! Highly recommend the Berlin Marriott. Very nice and clean hotel in a fabulous location.

That being said, Berlin has a wonderful train system, so if you find a hotel (either due to amenities or price) which is more appealing but is further away, its pretty easy to get around on the train.

(I always try to book hotels for my races about a year in advance. Make sure its a refundable reservation so if you don't get selected in the lottery, you can still cancel with no penalty.)

If you want to stargaze- I believe, the elites, including Kipchoge, stayed at the Intercontinental.

On the laundry topic, during my race on Sunday I experienced for the first time soap suds running down my legs from my running shorts. You can sort of see it from the race pictures, search 1187.

I guess I used too much detergent, or since we use the pods I didn’t put in a big enough load.

Sorry I wasn't in here much this morning. Between tracking and trying to keep up "jogging" with @Juxtatarot , @tri-man 47 and @Brony , I was just too tired to post.

Not her top goal but still a great result and she had a great day. She went out too fast for the first 6 miles and paid for it at the end. Learning experience for the next one.

Thanks again to the Chicago hosts that helped come around with me and spectate. Just added that much more to the special day. Celebrated with some deep dish pizza.

And congrats to @Dark Matter for his marathon result. Wish we knew ahead of time to follow along some.

And of course @SteelCurtain with another impeccable pacing performance. You're almost as good as @xulf at this point.....

Sorry I’ve been really absent in this thread….work, IM training, daughter’s wedding, yada yada. I haven’t posted or taken the time to write much of anything lately. @gianmarco Thanks for the mention. It was a good day in Long Beach “stacking hay,” as I’ve been calling IM training. If you have the chance to run the marathon (even the half) it’s a pretty nice flat, fast track. Oh and the views of the Pacific are plentiful. Keep up the solid work, stay the course and enjoy the journey All You BMF’rs.

Great seeing you and your better half! What a cool day - absolutely pristine fall weather. Got to see all sorts of neighborhoods in Chicago, all of which were packed with marathon fans and well wishers. Got to see the elite runners. Had Chicago pizza. Hell, you even got me to run 2 miles. Quite a day and thanks for being the catalyst on that!
