Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

24 hours, over 160 miles of running in October. I felt fine all the way until a couple weeks ago when I drove my HS senior to Mississippi state, then the right leg started bothering me.
Right hamstring is still nagging me pretty bad, enough that I’ll still run Saturday but I’m SO looking forward to not running (much) the rest of the year.
Next week starts a focus on swim and strength which I plan to do through the end of the year. I’ll probably start back on the bike, zwift, in December.
I’m a dumbass though and signed up for the oak barrel April 1, so I can’t take the full winter off of running.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday, what’s the plan for meetup after? I’ll have my sister, BIL and parents in town but will be happy to take some time to meet y’all.
You should try cruise control. Would take some pressure off your right leg if it’s on the accelerator all day.
This is what I need to do on long rides.

Or at the very least, stop every hour and walk for 5 minutes.

@xulf , I lean toward the ‘start fast’-ish category. Push kind of hard out of the gates since your HR is low …get the HR up to speed rather quickly, then settle into the controlled race pace. That leads to a little bit of banked time rather than being forced to make up some time later on.

For what the opinion of a non-marathoner is worth, this advice makes sense to me. Having a negative split in the first half of a marathon to make up lost time due to starting slow doesn't seem like the most efficient way to traverse the first half. I think if the plan is to negative split, the negative portion should come later in the race rather than miles 3-10.

I use it on highways, this was mostly state roads. But really it was just sitting. Sitting sucks.

Jesus guys :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Thanks for the consensus of the approach...pretty evenly split and no help at all!

To add to this, it looks like we are going to have 20-30 mph winds from the SSW. So, the back half is going to suuuuck. I'm going to want to be with the group by then and try to use whoever is there to block the wind (I'm sure nobody else has this plan).

I haven't decided how stupid I'll be this weekend yet ... I'm not in any kind of shape for this but still considering running the first half and walking the back half. Totally dumb idea... Totally. May get smart and just do the half, but we'll see.

My PR in 2019 in Indy (when I think it was just Grue and I at the race) had bad headwinds the last 8 miles. I stayed with my pace group until mile 21 I think for that very reason. I just sat in the back and let others buffer the wind impacts.

Watch out for the roundabouts.

:kicksrock: even if it isn't on Strava, I was still there

Wrong Indiana race. Only the monument circle to worry about in this one.

I hope you decide to run the half, I don't see much upside in attempting the full and plenty of downside. Enjoy the post race drinks, last year was a lot of fun.

One is enough to drive a man batty.

Man, that weather forecast looks really similar to Carmel in 2019 when a few of us ran it. A little warmer for you, but lots of wind and maybe some rain.

I will tell you - as many can attest we (me mostly) fretted about that weather the whole week. And for me personally, it was the best race I ever ran. Why? Because my fitness was there.

You got this. Go kick some ***. :headbang:

This looks like the first big racing weekend around here with @gruecd , @The Iguana , @xulf, and I think Steve C doing Monumental. @SteelCurtain pacing NYC and @Juxtatarot with his return to racing with a 5K. Am I missing anyone? Good luck fellas.

@tri-man 47 is running the same 5K as me.

This will serve as a practice race for me. Forecast calls for 20 mph winds and it’s a hilly course so I’m not expecting anything great time-wise. It’s more to test how fresh I feel after reduced mileage this week and to reacquaint myself with race effort.

We've all been there, we've all experienced that moment of discovery that ultimately leads to utter disappointment and then panic. Yes, I'm talking about shoe companies discontinuing your model. So just discovered New Balance has ended the illustrious reign of the 1260. I was crushed but they apparently have a substitute in their new 880. Anybody familiar with them? I have a somewhat unique foot, similar to a clown in that I wear a size 14 4E so I have a very limited selection to chose from. Once bigfoot finds a shoe he likes, change is not something he looks forward to.

Sorry dude! I checked Strava and didn’t see anything. 🤣🤣

I knew there was someone else at Indy but my old man brain wasn’t being helpful identifying who.

I plan to race this hard after having some pretty good training over the past month. I expect to arrive by 8 a.m. for the 9 a.m. race so I can pick up gear and probably run the course as a warm-up. We can talk on Saturday a.m.

Do you guys mind posting your goals again? I think @xulf is shooting for sub 3:20? Can’t remember everyone else.
I’m good with sub 3:20. For the half.

1:44 was the goal, stay under 8s every mile. But with the hamstring and I’ve gotten a head cold from my wife (she had full blown flu earlier this week) it seems like a stretch goal at this point. So I’ll just finish.

Over 20 mph winds here in Chicago for the 5K. Gusts up to 40 mph. Temps holding in the low 60s with high humidity - yuck. But looks like we’ll have a break in the rain until later in the morning.

Heading out for a run here myself. 39 degrees with rain/snow. I could choose the treadmill, but that doesn't seem right seeing what those guys are gonna run through today. Gonna crank out my itty bitty run in their honor. Pray for me. Thanks in advance.

I gotta head out to kiddy soccer soon so prob will miss rest

Xulf is past the HM split pt but time not showing on the app yet - he’s even splitting with Est finish right on goal!

Gru is wind sailing his group right on track! Just about to cross HM.

Oz is going to finish the HM in the next ten mins!

LetsGoooooooo

Just checking in.... Per tracking, looking great so far.

@gruecd rock steady at 7:55 pacing.

@xulf rock steady at 7:38 pace and on pace for that 3:20 finish. Just hit the halfway point.

@-OZ- about to finish at 8:30 pacing.
I’ll take it all things considered. Watch shows under 1:50.
Great race considering what you talked about above prior to starting. Hope it went well and you feel good. Congrats.

Thanks. Hammy held up but I didn’t feel like I could push it harder. Limfac was definitely the hammy. HR barely left zone2.

Edit - and now it hurts more. 🤕

Godspeed Gru, pacing today has to suck!
