@gianmarco not much to add that hasnt been said.

Balls of steel.

It's tough as we get older to determine if we should keep pushing or throw in the towel as the risk is too high. I think you found that gray area where you still made it through with (hopefully) just a scare with passing out.

Hoping you bounce back quickly to enjoy the rest of your trip.

Next month’s “challenge” might be the easiest yet. With the weather getting better.
Outside October. Try to get at least an hour outside every day. Rain or shine. 😎

Personally, I’ll be at the beach the first week.

Running will generally accomplish this ...but I've been doing an evening workout all year focused around these challenges. So this will give me a chance at night to circle back to some workouts from earlier months.

So....my oldest boy has three offers to kick in college for football. One of them is a Wisconsin school just north of Milwaukee. This is his #1 choice at the moment. For the sake of his future prospects and "best fit" we agree with him.

So there is a real possibility we will be moving up there after the school year is out (probably central Wisconsin area). As you all know we've mulled this possibility for a few years now and this may be the push to finally do it.

Any positive vibes would be appreciated: it's gonna be a stressful time between now and May. But, exciting and scary at the same time.

My knees won't hold up
You may be surprised at this. Not sure if you've had surgerys or what on the knees in the past, but as you work out and lose weight you may find the stress on your knees lessen.

I'm a lot like you: I absolutely HATE running. I also had knee surgery back in 1997, so I was really hesitant to really run "a lot" due to that. But I started out a lot like you. Very slow jogs. Which led to weight loss. And faster jogs. And finally running races.

The best piece of advice I got was from this thread early, which basically said: "watch your cadence. short striders are better than long strides."

So for me, that's how I run. I describe it as short, choppy strides. When I'm running well I'm at about 180/minute. Meaning 90 per side (right, left, right, left). And I've largely avoided any real knee pain or leg issues in 8 years. (other than normal soreness).

I'm not saying you need to run a race. But as the weight fell off and I started feeling GOOD things just progressed to that. And running my first race and seeing all those fit ladies there with all those tight running clothes made me realize "what the hell have I been missing here."

Good luck GB to you and the fam. Congrats to the boy for earning those offers.
Take it step by step, work through the hard parts, stay hydrated and fueled and you’ll make it happen.

NEIGHBORS! :headbang:

In all seriousness, the Appleton area is super nice and a lot more affordable than the Milwaukee suburbs. You'd be 90 minutes from your kid and only a couple of hours from hunting and fishing and snowmobiling "up north." Anyway, I've lived in Wisconsin my entire life, so I'm happy to help any way I can.

OK, I'll look in that area. At this moment we are still thinking that triangle around Wausau, Minoqua, and Rhinelander. But with him possibly being in Milwaukee everything is on the table.

Let me know if you want me to hook you up with a real estate agent up there. I know several (one in the biblical sense).

So what school, if I may ask? Concordia-Mequon? MSOE? Lakeland?

Yeah - Concordia. You know anything about it?

I mean, you 2 couldn't even wait a day?
I don't get it. Head must still be foggy from the 87,000 beers last night...
Oh, and to explain (even though it's clearly obvious to others), it's that for reasons unknown (maybe because I walked too much in the Berlin race), before you've even landed back in the US, you and ChiefyBoy are chatting it up in here, he's moving out there, and the budding bromance is just palpable.

Frankly, it's nauseating. But you do you.

The surprising thing is, @gianmarco , he's moving on to someone who's even slower than you.

Yeah - Concordia. You know anything about it?
I do, and my impressions are favorable. I'd worked for ten years for one of the other Concordia schools in River Forest (Chicago). I've been up to the Mequon campus several times for cross country races since my current school, Dominican, is in the same conference (though I'm retiring at the end of this academic year ..and Dominican doesn't have a football team). I love the Mequon campus along the lakefront. Lot of land and athletic fields. I really enjoy D-III sports: Very competitive, but yet a strong and serious balance between athletics and academics. Like most smaller D-III schools, classes are smaller, which creates a great environment for student-faculty interaction and faculty mentoring.

When I was at Concordia-Chicago many years ago, they were somewhat defensive about their Lutheran heritage ..I think because they were a smaller and shrinking denomination. But my sense was, and is, that Mequon was much more 'open' than CUC regarding faith backgrounds. In general, I do like faith-based institutions and the character they add to the campus. I don't know anything about Mequon's academic programs, but it's always a matter of what the student puts into it ...getting good grades, fostering relationships with faculty and staff, eventually getting an internship in their field of study. Does your son have an academic interest at this point?

Yeah, he's planning on majoring in sports management. They have a Sport and Entertainment Business degree, so he will be in that and probably minor in Sport Media if I had to guess. We did a game day visit there over Labor Day weekend, so we were able to get a decent feel of the place. The proximity to basically two major markets (Milwaukee and Chicago) with professional sports teams for internships is a main draw. Not to mention Green Bay right down the road as well.

They are certainly a faith based institution, but I get the sense that a student can take as much of that as they want or as little as they want. When we were at the football game a couple of things really stood out to us:

1. The coaching staff didn't yell at one player the whole game. Every interaction was from a positive standpoint - meaning - if a player made a mistake the coach talked to the kid man to man about the mistake and didn't get up his *** about it. It was all about respect and improvement and such. That made a big impression on me. His high school coach regularly undresses the kids on the sidelines with yelling and profanities and that doesn't sit right with me or my wife. I loved the kindness and respect the coaches showed their players.

2. After the game, the whole team gathered around the far end zone, and they had a quick prayer and some words about the game. I could also hear the coach say something like: "Ok guys. Have a good evening. Just make sure you are smart out there." Which tells me there is probably still some social life going on there, but the coaches are aware of it and understand it is still a college. Which I am cool with.

3. The campus has an underground tunnel system for winter. The kids literally don't have to walk outside when the bad weather hits all winter.

Speaking of Berlin, as others have said you showed an impressive amount of perseverance there, but I was thinking...

Have you considered focusing more on short distances for the time being rather than either chasing the marathon or not running much? It would be less taxing on your seemingly very busy schedule, and based on the virtual races and the grue-torture race you're pretty solid at the shorter stuff. And if you get in a groove and start logging 40+ mile weeks, it's not like it's going to hurt your performance, but it becomes less of something that you have to do week after week. Another bonus is that if you're doing, e.g., a 5K, then short of something crazy like a hurricane, it's almost impossible to get hit by the weather whammy on race day because ideal conditions are much less important to the results.

Oh, 100%.

I absolutely prefer shorter races and wouldn't mind racing them. The one takeaway from this marathon was that it reminded me how good it felt to get out regularly. I really want to try and keep that up.

I had 0 intentions of running another marathon. I checked off my boxes at J&J. Ran the whole thing and got in under 4 hours. The only reason I did this was to join in the trio to help with lottery to get in. Plus, the idea of running a major seemed interesting. And, I really didn't think we'd get in.

The dumb thing is that I felt ready for this one. I really think I did enough and I'm happy with my long runs in the last few weeks. It's so stupid, but the idea of just running 26.2 on my own as a long run in the next few weeks crossed my mind today. Just to show I can do it.

But yeah, I'll do future 5Ks and maybe 10Ks, but that's it. It's just not worth it to me and no need to risk anything or be stupid just to do another one.

You *did* do enough. You just had a bad day. You can totally do it, you've done it before on less-productive training.

Of note, the ageless Gene Dykes (75 y.o.) ran a 3:18 Berlin marathon. He had the American AG record in hand but had some serious cramping 300 yards from the finish and missed the record by 13 seconds.

Also of note: This was his 163rd marathon ...and he considers the city-based Berlin Marathon his least favorite ("every mile looked the same").

@Zasada started the year with a 3:13 marathon back in mid-January. I think @pbm107 has the best HM this year ..not sure of the time. @xulf had a 19:03 5K this summer. Not much more to choose from at those shorter distances!

No idea how that guy walks around with such a giant buffer.

Funny, but I have toyed with this idea myself to check the box and also gauge if it makes any sense to make a concerted push to get in marathon shape and try for a BQ. I was thisclose to doing it in the spring (even had a path picked out where I could use my car as an aid station), but schedule and weather never aligned. I'm also assuming I'll be wrecked for a few days afterwards, which is less than appealing.

so during lunch - in my jeans and polo shirt. I took to our reservoir trail to do a brisk walk with a smidge of jog here and there.

3.1 - 47:27

I'm 99.9% sure I can do 45 no problem. I walked the entire last mile

14:47
15:32
15:27
1:39

Not sure if I'll try again tomorrow..... But I think my new goal will be below 40.......

I always want to do this and honestly think this is going to be my next marathon. Control some of the things I normally can't (weather, nerves, sleeping in my own bed, fueling). I know I'm capable of more than my PR, but I just can't shake the race day jitters. It's also so frustrating to train for a few months only to get awful weather. 26.2 is 26.2 no matter where or how you do it imo.
