Ran a 10k - Official Thread (11 Viewers)

I have a dumb question: what do you guys do when it rains?

I've had the last 2 days off and was hoping for a 5 mile run today but its been raining and looks like it will continue. is there any gear I can buy for this? just run and get wet? slightly cooler today so I'm not sure I'd like that. running inside is not an option.
Runners get rained on, not rained out. :flex:
I don't mind getting wet, but I do mind getting wet and then cold.
I have a under armor rain jacket. It's fine for 40s-50's and rainy. And by fine, I mean if you're only going to be running for an hour or so. It will be soaked after that. If you need something water proof (not resistant) there's some options available but they can get pricey.

Waterproof also means it doesn't breath and will trap heat. Even in the 50s or even 40s you might end up uncomfortably hot on a long run.

Ok, degenerates, I passed on the bar and went for a run in the rain instead. Put on a long sleeve tshirt, hoodie, and the short sleeved waterproof pullover over top of that. Put in my layer of under armor pants with lightweight waterproof pants over top of those. It was about 50 degrees with a steady rain but not too hard. Realized about .5 miles in that I had on one too many layers of shirts but too late to lose one. My watch was dead so I took my old phone and used MapMyRun on one of my usual routes. Not sure if it was the rain or what but:

Mile 1 9:03

Mile 2 8:36

Mile 3 8:47

.25 1:59 (7:53)

That's about as fast as I've ever run while still being pretty comfortable. Didn't have a heart rate without my watch but felt pretty good throughout. Took the hoody off my head halfway through and just let the rain have at me. Felt good!

That's a lot of gear for a 50 degree rainy afternoon. Did you look like this? ;)

Good work getting out there!

Imagine how fast you woulda run if you werent wearing 50 lbs of extra clothes.

One of my favorite experiences with running is having those unintentional fast miles. Once in a while I'm feeling OK, my mind drifts and I'm not paying attention to pace. I then look down at my watch and am surprised to see how fast I'm going. I had one of those mile during my 8 mile run tonight and for the first time that accidental mile was under 7:00 (6:49 to be exact). I also ran a 5:47 mile near the end just to see what that felt like with my next 5K coming up on Saturday. That's probably too fast to hold for 3.1 but it didn't feel all that horrible.

If you are dropping sub 6's at the end of a 8 miler, you are probably ready to start running 5K's in 17's.

I love running in the rain on a warm day.

Cold days, we manage.

But I don't bike in the rain if I can help it.

Did 4 miles tonight to complete my back to back 17 hour days. I'm exhausted.

Mile 1 - 12:18

Mile 2 - 12:10

Mile 3 - 11:16 (this was mostly downhill)

Mile 4 - cool down walk home

How do you other TomTom users feel about the accuracy of the HR data? I've been getting some weird numbers. With the Garmin my HRs were pretty consistent, and lower than what I've been getting the two weeks I've used the TomTom, starting with the marathon. Here's an example from my six miler this morning:

8:23/170

8:17/180

8:17/144

7:30/164

7:16/142

7:23/173

All over the place, with no correlation to pace or my perceived effort level.

looking back at the marathon data my 3rd mile was 8:25/180, 4th was 8:19/108, a 9:20/111 at 20 and a 9:05/165 at 23. Clearly some of those are nonsense...

I think I'm going to wear both one of these next few days to see how they match up.

When my Tomtom is off, it's really off - for example, the first half hour of my run Sunday after cycling for 90 minutes showed 75 bpm @ around an 8 minute pace while sometimes it will show 195 bpm for an easier run. But when it's not obviously wrong, it's pretty accurate.

Wow at both of those posts. I've seen a few weird spikes at the very beginning when I put it on, but it's been rock solid all other times.

How tight are you wearing it?

tight enough where it doesn't shift around but not cutting off circulation.

Speaking of devices....do any of you run with music? If you do, what do you use? Phone? Not a big deal for me on a treadmill, I just plop my iPod down on the treadmill, but when I take it with me running, it's annoying.

I think this bunch of yahoos would just run outside in the rain.....NTTAWWT.
It's just rain...
As I tell everyone when they ask that question "it rains on race day too, practice like you play".

One of the best, funnest runs I ever had was a trial run through the woods when it poured literally buckets. We got out of our cars and were instantly soaked it was raining so hard. Ran through plenty of water knee deep, it was glorious!

When I run solo, I most always bring some music. If the run is short, I'll run with my phone. If it's a longer run I have a tiny sansa sandisk clip mp3 player. I don't even notice it's there. But about half the time I'm running with a buddy and I'll run sans music. NEVER run with music during a race.

I don't have the TomTom, but I have the Mio Link which I believe uses the same sensor. It works well for me most of the time, but I have to wear so tight that it does start to cut off my circulation.

good question. IM prohibits it, but otherwise I like my music. On the last 50k I listened to 3 hours of podcasts I wanted to catch up on, then a couple hours of music. It gets lonely when you're on the trail. and make a wrong turn, heading 15 miles off course.

I use a sandisk mp3 player, like this: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Clip-Player-Black/dp/B009PNXZFA/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1430923630&sr=1-10&keywords=sansa+mp3+player

Something else I am realizing, is I am completely streaming now....I don't have a single mp3 anymore. I pay for the Spotify premium and can listen "offline" so I may be stuck with my iPod.....I have an arm strap that I've never used. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Because it's one more thing that I'd need to worry about when the only thing I'm concerned with is running a good race. When I'm running hard I don't even pay attention to the music anyways. I try to focus on what I'm doing. Also, I enjoy the race experience and atmosphere so I don't really feel the need for music as a distraction.

ah...ok.

so today I have pain in my hip, right at the top of the hip bone. feels like somebody hit my with a hammer to the bone. is this a hip pointer or something else? and how did I get it from running?

You might want to look into some trigger point techniques if it's not the actual bone that hurts. Get a tennis ball or lacrosse ball and lay on ball in that area. It will help get the blood flowing back in that spot to help heal it quicker.

Same here. I'll try tightening it up a notch though. Was thinking the rain on marathon day might have been an issue but it shouldn't be. Will report back on my comparison experiment.

And buy a foam roller if you haven't already. It could be your IT band which runs from your hip down to the outside of your knee. I had all kinds of hip/knee problems and rolling those areas before and after runs has been a huge help for me.

Those days are the equivalent of smacking 300 yard drives down the middle in golf. Rare, but seemingly effortless and you're on cloud nine.

Good luck on the race on Saturday. I won't be able to make it sadly. I'm in the exact same condition as last year. I haven't run in over a week and I'm still pretty sore on my right leg. Hope the field shakes out for you to break the ribbon!

I actually listen to books on my phone using audible while I run. If I didn't do this, I would never get through the 41.5 hours of "Lincoln: Team of Rivals" that I have been working on.

I use the same player. So, so much better than the cassette Walkman I used to run with back in the day. I've tried the armband/phone thing, but I just don't like it. Sandisk is esp. great for bike too.

I run with it during races. Helps me a ton, but I can see it's not for everyone. Music and running are just an intertwined experience for me.

Someone (Juxt?) posted a few months back on listening to more chill music rather than testosterone rock. Totally on board with this after loading my MP3 player with Minor Threat, Helmet and Metallica.... good for 100 yd sprint, not 6 mile run.

This is slowly becoming reality for me, but when I first started using laid back music I really struggled. Now, I start off "chill" then go up more intense near the end. Seems to do the trick.

I still use an old iPod Shuffle, somehow the thing is still working despite taking a beating over the years. I cut off one headphone so I can hear what's going on around me, pretty important on a single track trail as I've scared the hell out of several people that haven't been able to hear me coming up behind them. I typically listen to podcasts (Endurance Planet, Ultrarunnerpodcast, Trail Runner Nation, Talk Ultra and some B.S. Report thrown in), and save music for when I need either a push or a higher level of distraction later in a run or race. But I also make a point to leave it at home sometimes to be sure to enjoy the trail. During ultras I'll usually start without using it, and then turn it on a couple of hours in.

I just want to post here that the bolded royally blows! Hopefully you'll get things figured out and are cured eventually.

:oldunsure: Why not?
good question.

Makes sense. I have a few favorite faster songs that I like to use near the end of tempo runs. Eventually, though, you'll get to the point that you finish runs without being tired.

Speaking of devices....do any of you run with music? If you do, what do you use? Phone? Not a big deal for me on a treadmill, I just plop my iPod down on the treadmill, but when I take it with me running, it's annoying.

If I'm being honest, I am a mental midget. It's the biggest thing holding me back IMO. I use the music to keep me from thinking. My cardio capacity has come further than I ever thought and I don't really get winded unless I increase tempo at the end of a run. My legs don't really hurt anymore other than my knee joints which I'm dealing with. I get more tired out by my day than I do exercising. I'm generally feeling good about where I'm at and where I'm going. I'm really taking this whole thing as a lifestyle change rather than an exercise regiment that I will eventually stop doing. That wasn't my initial plan. I'm just going to let this take me wherever it wants.

podcasts (mostly Ted talks, 99pi, EP, and welcome to level 7), youtube downloads of stand up comedy, and lighter music for MAF runs

harder stuff for tempo

I have that, it is pretty sweet. The reactive lighting that changes brightness based on how far away you are looking is nice technology. Although I will say it didn't last the entire night during my 100M last fall, maybe because I was in the middle of nowhere and constantly looking way far away. I'll use it on Saturday for the morning stretch, as my race starts at 4:30 AM so I'll need light for 90 minutes, then I'll drop it in a drop bag at mile 7.

GL ultra folks!

Not much going on my way (buying a house, selling a house, bleh). I did get in a #####ing ride yesterday. Started out in a big group and by the first real mile it was down to three - myself and the two tri guys that win all the local races around here. Yeah, that kind of ride. For the meat of the ride hit 240watt average, 261w normalized (and HR at an average of 171 out of 188 max - smack dab on threshold). Nothing like near an hour on or slightly over threshold LOL. Power might be more than half of what FUBAR does on a normal day. :flex:. :P

Got out the spin bike and did 45 minutes on it. Did around 12 miles and my ### couldn't take any more. :oldunsure:
Stationary bikes are hard on your ### as the seat is rigid. I can ride for 6+ hours and have no issues but get worn out by an hour on the trainer.

Pretty sure you have that last part backwards. You'd kick my ###.
