Ran a 10k - Official Thread (6 Viewers)

LOL. Yep - Chicago seems to have one horrific weather week each winter and summer. This is the week of winter that is just brutal. 
I chose to live here, but the things I would do to only get one week of this per year.  We got 9" Saturday, another 5" of lake effect Sunday, the temp's bottomed out and the wind howled until a brief reprieve that began about this time yesterday.  Now I'm crossing every limb that I have in hopes this rain melts enough snow so it doesn't turn into all ice sometime overnight.  

 
For real.  It's been snowing here pretty much nonstop since yesterday, roads are crap, and the wind chill is like 12°, and I'm actually contemplating running outside this afternoon...
Between last Sat and the beginning of Feb, today is the only forcasted day above 10.  And it's 40+  :lmao:  Popped my cherry for the year Monday with the first negative wind chill run.  Looking like I'll need to prepare for some more.  If my neighborhood doesn't turn into a sheet of ice anyway.  May need to get creative if the next 12 hours don't produce optimal results.

 
Since we're talking headphones I'll give my short review on these bone conduction headphones I bought this weekend.  

I listened to a podcast on my long run and I loved them.  They fit good under a beanie, didn't move a bit.  Clear, crisp sound.  

Used them last night and listened to music...it was a little disappointing.  I'm a jam band fan, I listen to Phish probably 70% of the time :bag: .  I could hear the lyrics just fine, but the instruments jamming in the back ground wasn't as crisp as I like it.  I had a feeling that would be a downside.  However, given the safety issue I think I still prefer them over the ear buds that seal off your entire ear.  

Most of the time I listen to podcast so its not a major issue, just slightly disappointing. 

When you guys race do you wear headphones?   I'm fairly new to listening to music while running.   I don't want to offend any spectators that are cheering me on.  
How do/would they fit with glasses/sunglasses? Want to check these out but from photos I'm not sure how well they would work out for me.

 
Jan / Feb weather always has me scratching my head on why I live anywhere but south. Looking at first treddy run tomorrow morning with cold rains coming overnight and into morning.  Ate wind and cold so far this week but don’t think tempo run in rain at 530am is my best bet. 

Earned a full ice beard the other day which was actually sort of painful. 

 
I keep telling myself this is much better than trying to train for a fall marathon during a hot and humid Kansas summer.

I am pretty sure I am enjoying this more.  :lol:

 
Thoughts and prayers for all of you Midwesterners going through this difficult time.  And don't think I can't relate - there was a thin layer of frost on my windshield this morning that took a good 2 minutes of full defrost to remove.  Luckily that cold snap appears to be ending, and the next 10 days should have lows in the mid-40s and highs in the mid-60s.  I may or may not have even read a book for an hour in my backyard yesterday with my shirt off.

For you, it probably is.  Avg high's of 39-44 Dec-Feb with less than 20" of snow per year vs. avg high's of 86-92 June-Aug.  Not every day is going to be optimum, but you'll have more hits than misses vs. summer.  Story isn't the same here though.  Our avg high's are about 10 degrees cooler in summer - and with generally less humidity.  Temp's don't vary much in winter, but our average snowfall is on the north side of 70".  And it not surprisingly varies fairly widely year-to-year.  It's one reason why I didn't commit to last year's marathon and confirmed that I won't in future years either.  For as much #####ing as I've done about late Dec/early Jan here last year we actually were fairly lucky from that point on, relatively speaking - and it's how I was able to play catch up with training.  But if we have a winter with > 90-100" of snow then it's just not happening - I'll pull the plug and do something shorter then try again later.

I actually do.  I've had it for 18-19 years (it was a giveaway item when I was in the construction equipment rental business), but I probably only use it 2-3 times a year.

I had a roommate in college from Anchorage, and he had a cord and plug hanging out of the front of his car like this.  I'd never seen anything like it, and haven't ever seen one since.  But I'm guessing that's still a thing where a lot of you live.

This evening's run will be roughly 36* warmer than Monday's.

Yeah, it's actually pretty funny. We have had literally no snow in the last 5 winters. 

We have had more snow in the last 3 weeks than we had the previously 5 winters or so combined. Figures it would be the winter I choose for marathon training.  :lol:     :kicksrock:

But, I have been pretty lucky so far. Temps have been manageable for the most part, and the city I live in is awesome at snow removal. It's usually off my streets in the neighborhood within 12 hours.

I first saw one of those in Calgary when I was renting a car for work.  I went back to the desk to ask if the car was OK to drive :D .  While the explanation about the engine block freezing made sense, I did vow that I wouldn't live so far north as to need one of those. I sure showed them.  

 
12 hours!?!  That's terrible.
Glad someone else had the same thought.  We can get some snow in Chicago, but almost all streets (by me) are plowed within hours.  Snow on the ground forces me to go to places that I don't need a sidewalk to access, but I'm almost never actually running in snow.

Not every community around me has them, but the sidewalk clearing bobcat's are invaluable.  They're not as fast coming out as the plows, but usually within a few hours.  It took a winter of trial and error to figure out which towns don't have them though.  As much as I enjoy snow running stumbling upon those discoveries was not pleasant.  So while I still have snow to navigate and the surface is constantly changing one house to the next with surprise snow drifts to jump over or plow through along the way, it's a whole lot safer than the streets and somewhat manageable to run in smaller doses.  So long as it doesn't then freeze anyway...

 
Thoughts while running tonight. 

  • I’m in shorts! Ya know, I like these shorts. 
  • running would be so much more fun if it was biking 
  • wow I’m seriously unfit 
  • It’ll come back...slowly. 
  • I’m overdressed.  Only a little but how the eff am I overdressed?
  • eff this pain in my side. Walk it out and finish up. 
Was a short run for where I’m going but I’ve just started up... I’m not in a rush, getting the body ready and building a base. 

Just under 4 miles.  5k. Was 27:18.

You haven't lived until you wake up at 3AM and realize that you forgot to plug your car in.  If you don't plug it in, you're not going anywhere in the morning.  So, at 3AM, you have to don all your winter gear to trudge out to your car in -20F temps with an extension cord and run it back to the socket on the side of your apartment building.

Ah, the memories.

At least now I have a 3-car garage and a remote starter so that isn't a problem anymore.  

But yeah, Calgary weather can really suck sometimes.

I started not all that long ago. I didn't have much of a plan either except to just run - basically just get miles on my legs. Still not much further along other than starting to learn about my body and learning what I can and can't do. 
When I started out last time if I finished a run and didn’t poop myself and my nipples didn’t bleed it was a success. I’m not a whole lot further along this time, lol. 

 
mini "breakthrough" moment today. Have a meeting all through lunch today so no running then... after work is possible but a little iffy and decent chance I'd have to skip that too. So guess who got to work early and has already run 5 milles today... That's right...

Woot!  Nice work!

This is the reason I love to run first thing in the morning.  You get to spend the rest of the day enjoying what you did rather than having to think about having to do it.

Roads were pretty clean by the time I got home from work, so I did run outside.  Legs ended up feeling super fresh coming off the rest day on Tuesday, and I ended up doing a little progression run without even trying:  7:56/7:49/7:31/7:36/7:27/7:23/7:17/7:00.

Feels like 7:30ish is becoming my new "GA" pace, which is encouraging.

8-mile treadmill workout on tap for this afternoon, then 11 miles (40 laps) at the Pettit tomorrow.  High temps for the next week (°F) are 2, 9, 4, 17, -1, -10, and -4.   :kicksrock:

My dog runs with me on probably 80% of my runs.  I've pushed her up to 9 miles now.  I think she'll have no issues doing more.  

Its made her a maniac though.  When I get home she follows me to the closet.  If I put on running shorts she goes absolutely nuts.  If I put on jeans or sweats she hangs her head and just lays around.  Same thing in the mornings.  I used to think it was a pain taking the pooch, but shes fine now.  Hardly notice shes there sometimes.  

 
Kinda depressing that this was the best case, but it wasn't pouring during last night's 7 miles - I was too wet to notice how heavy it ever really got though.  So the only real mental hurdle I had was needing to trudge through those miles with cement shoes.  I had enough spring in my step to get through the worst areas over the first two miles or so without getting too water logged.  That changed over a stretch mile 3 though.  Feet turned to anchors from then on so I didn't even try to avoid other flooded sidewalks.  But thankfully the temps changed when they did last night as we got enough snow so my neighborhood is not a sheet of ice.  

Gonna skip tomorrow's negative wind chill and just lift, but should be able to (uncomfortably) run between now and at least Monday - hopefully Tuesday.  If they're right about what's coming I may shut it down for a bit then though.  That's a decision for Future MAC though.

I got out yesterday and didn't realize how icy it was until about a mile in when I had to hit the sidewalks. Almost completely ate it once and just had to pay close attention. But otherwise it's finally feeling good out there both fitness wise and leg wise. 

Of course, much like you guys, weather now is turning to #### for the next few days.

Walk/hike a lot. And if you’re feeling pretty good after a week, I don’t see the harm in starting up with some really easy, shorter runs. But if you’ve got any niggles or anything else nagging, be conservative. After my first shorter ultra I felt the same way - itching to get back out there. So after a few days off I ignored a sore and tight Achilles and headed out for a run - about a half mile in I felt a shooting pain up the back of my leg, and that started a 9-month injury battle.

I've never tried running with our boxer.  He's a good dog but he gets nuts around other dogs which is why I've avoided it.  But, with the current weather and not as many dogs out, maybe I'll give it a shot for a short 2-3 mile run.

 
@SFBayDuck, is there a good website out there to find Ultras?  I've been noodling on your 50K suggestion and if I can find something with the right combination of elevation, weather, timing, and location I might give it a go.  I could probably convince a friend to do it with me which would make it even more fun.

Chicago temps have dropped (13 degrees for this morning's run), so what didn't get cleared yesterday when it was around 30 degrees is now ice and ruts.  As hoped, though, the nearby university's sidewalks were in quite good shape.  I did 8 laps around, which allowed me to just zone out and not worry constantly about footing.  But coming days are a mix of some even colder temps and some on and off snow.

It's so annoying when my routines are altered.  My kitchen is getting remodeled.  I have to get up at 4:30 instead of 5:00 to be done running and showered before people start arriving to do stuff.  Plus the super bad weather will have me going to the gym every morning and that takes extra time.  And my garage is full of stuff so I have to park in the driveway. So my car is iced up and freezing every morning.  Plus I have no kitchen so I can't cook.

As long as we somewhat maintain what we're currently setting out to do we all reserve the right to complain as much as we want - effective coping mechanism.  

 
Tonight's 10 miler is going to be dicey. The sidewalks were all nice and clear before the latest round of sleet and snow on top. So not sure what the plan is. Gonna try to do sidewalks, which has about a 1" layer of soft snow. Which is normally ok. Will probably wear my trail shoes for that - they did really well in the snow last week.

I've yet to come close to pushing my dog to his limits. He's a border collie/australian shepherd mix. We've done about 7 miles as the longest run and he's never even come close to stopping - I'm the limiting factor when it comes to pace, always. Really kind of curious on what he could do if I was faster. Also curious to get him on a 8 or 10 mile run to see if he really does just keep trucking like it is nothing or if he ever hits a wall. He still starts out wanting to sprint every run and it takes a bit to get him to settle into a groove that I'm not having to convince him to slow down. It can be a bit of a pain sometimes but for the most part I love having him along. Helps me keep my pace up and pushes me along.

He is also very similar in terms of reaction. Almost anytime we go for a walk, he tries his best to get me to turn it into a run... he doesn't care that if I'm in jeans, etc. he thinks the pace needs to be a run, not a walk.

Put him on a leash for a walk (or run) and he acts like he is going to go get a moving car. On a walk he has pretty much stopped that most times but now on runs he will kind of do it. Adds a little extra weight training by wrestling with him sometimes.

My dog acts like other dogs don't exist - loves people, wants nothing to do with other dogs especially if they are bigger than him. So dogs aren't a problem, but for some reason, he has always tried to "attack" cars whenever he is on a leash. We can be in the yard at home and he'll ignore them all day. Put him on a leash for a walk (or run) and he acts like he is going to go get a moving car. On a walk he has pretty much stopped that most times but now on runs he will kind of do it. Adds a little extra weight training by wrestling with him sometimes. 
I take my dog out a few times a week on the trails.  I love it, but there are definitely issues.  On the one place I can take him off leash I have to worry about him taking off after other dogs, squirrels, or cows.  His recall is great without those distractions, but if any of them pop up it's 50/50 at best, even with a pocket full of treats.  So I'm always taking him off and on the leash when I see people coming or we're coming up on some cows or something.

In areas he's on leash he's constantly stopping suddenly to smell stuff, pee on stuff, etc.  I'm pretty sure my right knee is slightly injured from hyper-extending it trying not to fall over him when he's done this.  Other times he takes off pulling on the harness - this morning on a muddy run I jumped sideways a bit to avoid a deep puddle, planted my left foot in the mud, and at the same time he pulled in the other direction as he was trying to jump over the puddle.  My foot slid in the mud a bit, and I felt a quick, sharp pain in my hip that I hope isn't a big deal.

Part of this is a training issue, I know, and I'm constantly working on it but should probably get some help.  And part is that he's still just a puppy, not even two years old yet.

The only sub-100 in Canada I'm familiar with is Squamish, which has a 50K and a 50M over the two days of the weekend, with many people running both for the Squamish 50/50.  It's sold out for this year, but keep an eye on it for next year.

When we go for a walk, he does this constantly. When we go run, he is almost singularly focused and "just keep running". The only exceptions are the cars mentioned earlier that he will pull toward like a moron and if he has to poop. There have been a couple times were we will be trucking along in a nice rhythm and all of a sudden he will got from at pace to full stop with no warning. I usually don't see it in time and we both get yanked back toward each other. Then he looks up at me with this "come on, man!" expression on his face.

I keep telling him he needs to give me some warning but he doesn't listen! :lmao:

 
I hate to be the bad guy, but I just want to remind everyone this time of year to be careful out there.  When it gets this cold, you're likely to not pay attention to what you're doing. Next thing you know, you innocently click on a so-called helpful link from @Ned about cold weather attire and the next thing you know, all your banner ads on facebook and other sites are about crotchet sleeves and knitted sheaths for your dong.  From a guy who's been there, trust me... you don't want this.

TLDR; tread carefully out there.

 
Well......sheeeeeeit. Getting out of bed this morning I bumped my left calf with my right heel turning a corner. Left calf is getting more sore by the hour.  This tempo run tonight may turn into a limp and slide run.

I started the Medrol dosepak this morning for tendonitis on my thumb.  good stuff so far.  Hopefully this helps improve things.  It ain't easy to avoid reinjuring the thumb 50 times a day.  Yesterday's x-ray showed no fracture, which is nice.

First ever treadmill training run tonight. Temp here was 16 with a north wind of 18. Just not safe or worth it. So went to the local community center.

1 mile warm up at 10:30 pace

8 miles at 9:00 pace, HR right around 169-171

1 mile cool down at 10:30 pace

Remind me never to do that again. Just awful. I don't know how you guys do that on a regular basis, though I imagine the weather is a great motivator. :lol:
