Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

I’m starting to think this has been my issue for a long time now. I spoke before about the inconsistency and not knowing why. Well, I think after 3 years, I’ve finally cracked the code. During my training, I was focused on weight loss as well. Since I’ve lost nearly 80 pounds 3 or 4 years ago, I’ve been obsessed with not overeating and putting weight back on.

The past 3 weeks, I’ve kinda let my diet go a bit. Still Vegan, still mostly organic, but I have been eating like an animal. I’ve also started splurging on non-dairy ice cream and Skittles at night. Before I started doing this, I hardly consumed any sugar. Now, I’ve been binging and not really caring about my weight. Abs are now nearly nonexistent, but my runs and overall feeling has been phenomenal. Now it seems like every run is effortless and my watch always pings in with a +3 or +4 performance level at the start. In the past, I maybe had a +3 or +4 twice a month, now I get it every single morning.

So the lesson for the day is, eat a ton of Skittles before bed. Wake up in the morning a BMF.
Im not a big sugar guy, unless they are GUs but the more I eat the better I feel.  Im not dialed in on where I need to be and Im curious if the 4 mo of vegetarian eating will have an impact.

On top of that, I honestly just hate driving somewhere to run. So we would be getting one purely for the convenience factor.
By the way, was going to say that this is something else I have kind of learned to like - I don't mind driving to the Y to to use their treadmills if/when I need one. Also have taken to driving to downtown Indy to run for a couple different reasons. One is that my wife isn't a runner and never will be. But we've taken to working out at the same time at least a couple nights a week. We drive to the Y, she rides the bike or goes to an exercise class and I go run near whichever one we go to. When the weather was crappy I'd run on the treadmill or on the indoor track at the downtown location. Now that it is nice, I go run on the canal downtown or around the neighborhood at the one closer to home while she rides in the gym/goes to class. I've also driven to a couple parks to run and gone for runs on the Monon Trail - it's an old railroad path that has been paved - actually part of the Carmel race was run on a little piece of it).

There are some other areas I'm looking forward to go run on in the near future for some of my long runs. I love running some of the same courses over and over - good way to see where I am and such - but I also love having new sights/scenery to take in to change things up.

I'm the exact opposite now that my kids are older.  My wife is fine if I spend whatever time I feel I need to decompress and exercise and I spend the 10-15 thinking about my run (or bike or swim) goals and alternatives (plan A, plan B).  Also, taking stock of how I'm feeling and upcoming workouts.  Usually the ride back I'm feeling great after getting my workout in - the one downside is getting in the car sweaty but I drive an old Jeep so don't really care that much.

I pretty much always drive somewhere.  That's because the nearest trail head isn't in my backyard, but two miles away.  And the really good stuff is 20-30 minute drive, so I save that for weekend long runs or when I drop my daughter off at school near those trails.

ETA:  this thing is the best for driving home post-run.  Usually just use it to cover the seat, but occasionally will use the wrap around feature to change and clean up a bit.

Honestly, I'm still at a phase where getting outdoors is probably a little more important to me than the running.  I sit in an office all day, every day during the week.  I want to be outdoors and running through the neighborhood is better but running on trails is the best.

Back in the day, we called those transition wraps "towels," and I bring a couple with me (plus a change of shorts and shirt) for when I drive somewhere for a run, which I really like to do ...when I have the time.  I prefer to run on some trails (though some are paved) rather than the city streets all around me.  It's nice to have cooled off before getting home.

The zipper thing that holds them in place on the car seat makes them way more practical than “towels”. But yes, a towel works in a pinch. Either way, nothing worse than driving to a trail head and forgetting to bring a towel with me, which pretty much only happens in a hotel/rental car situation since this thing is always in my trunk.

From all your squishy stories it sounds like you might need to go full Dexter and completely cover your car interior in tarps. Otherwise you’ll have to call in Winston Wolf to clean that #### up.
LOL, if I drive someplace to run, I just put on a dry shirt afterwards and sit on a towel.  All good.  Thankfully I've got leather seats. ;)

Marathon training starts on Monday.  15 weeks.  On my coach's advice, I'm going to run a new half marathon in Racine on September 29 (six weeks pre-marathon) as a fitness test.  Assuming a solid training block and agreeable weather on race day, I'd really like to set a meaningful new PR in Indy.

I didn't really take any down time since spring, so the good thing is that I'm starting training already at race weight, but the bad thing is that I'm not feeling especially fresh.  Time will tell which is more important...

Assuming good weather conditions, what kind of time are you expecting to run the half in?  I think you'll be capable of a significant PR in that race.

The half?  Well, considering that my "A" goal for the marathon  (right now, at least) is 2:57 or better, I should be able to do the half 5-20 seconds/mile faster than that pace, so maybe 1:25:xx?

I reserve the right to change my marathon goal if it goes the way I think it's going to go when my buddy and I meet up with @ChiefD in KC for Packers/Chiefs two weeks before my race...   :porked: :suds:

Running though Racine should be motivation enough, amirite? I’m in Milwaukee over Labor Day weekend and will be in and around Madison/Spring Green. Any easy races that weekend? 10k max.  :bag:

Will you back off on some of your gym sessions?  I think you said you're doing 3-4 strength workouts a week.  Cut that back to twice a week?

It's 3x per week far more often than it's 4x, and I'll probably stick with that.  It's honestly nothing horribly taxing.  45 minutes each workout, split up by muscle groups:  chest/triceps, back/biceps, and legs/shoulders with core added to each session as well.

LOL, generally true, although I think this race is in the "nice" part of town along the lake. :oldunsure:

You've got the Cow Chip Classic 5K/10K in Prairie du Sac on that Saturday.  It's an easy 35-minute drive from Madison, and you've got both a brewery (Vintage) and a winery (Wollersheim) within 3 miles of the start/finish.  Not to mention you're less than a half hour from Devil's Lake.

Alternatively, if you can find the cajones to do a half, you've got Rockin Brews right in Madison that same day.  Running combined with a craft beer festival and live music.

Just a little update here:

I added both the Fleet Feet app as well as the ####'s app.  I earned a $15 Fleet Feet coupon that was expiring today and ended up picking up one of these for $20.  Some brief use of it after watching some videos and this thing could be really good.

Also earned a $10 coupon from ****'s and picked up some BodyGlide for $10.

Not bad for just running like I was otherwise doing.
So how do I do this?  Browsing the apps section on Strava on my desktop and not seeing either of those.

Download the Fleet Feet app and put it on your phone.  I don't remember how but you can somehow sync it with your Strava account so that miles you log are automatically tracked.  You can earn up to 100 miles per month.   For you, that can sometimes happen in a single day.

Same thing with ****'s.  Download the app on your phone.

I ain't downloading no ****'s.

I completed what was probably my last 4x per week of the year earlier today. Going to be 90% running while on vacation then will map out my plan upon return. It'll be 2-3 x per week max though. No more. Strength is in a good place, so it's time to start devoting more time and energy to running.

Thanks. I’m in Spring Green Saturday doing an estate tour with an after beer at New Glarus. Maybe next time in another 3 years or so. Always busy when I’m up there.

Thanks.  Anything else like these?  I like getting stuff for things I'm already doing, and all it costs me is my data and privacy.

I'm hoping to keep up with two swim workouts each week and, then, supplement with some dumbbell work at home.

Yup ...simple to do.  After adding the FF app and creating a log-in, the synch with Strava/Garmin shows up right away.  Sweet (especially with marathon training)!  Anyone know the ratio of points <> dollars?

Now I need to check my Di ...check the Sporting Goods site.

This is what I wrote down for 2x per week earlier today, leaning towards just doing this:

Dumb bell overhead tricep extension super set with leg press

Dumb bell shoulder press super set with calf raise/heel drops

5 mins of rotating core exercises

Dumb bell stability ball chest press or weighted walking lunges

Single leg Romanian dead lift or dumb bell stability ball lawn mowers

Kettlebell swings super set with dumb bell curls

Super set 2 of reverse push up, Russian speed lunges, medicine ball squat and throws, good mornings to finish

I should be able to do all that under 45 mins.

Good luck @BassNBrew. Go get some.
Thanks.  Bib 97.  Should be updates posted every 30 minutes at the website or you can download RaceJoy and get a live feed.

I have my pace chart based on 29:59:27.  Going to try and bank some time as I know I'll suffer in the heat on the pavement section which will be during the heat of the day.  May end up walking most of that, we'll see.

Key milestones

Hawkins 6 am

Oak Hill 9 am

Robinson 11 am

Hike and Bike 3 pm

Silver springs 4:45 pm

Hike and Bike 6:30 pm

Robinson 11 pm

Oak Hill 1:45 am

Hawkins 6:30 am

Finish 10 am

If you see me fall behind any of those benchmarks, I'm toast.

Just fuel up that diesel engine tonight and grind that MFer out tomorrow. See you on the other side with your WS100 qualifier and a new buckle.

#getsome
