Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

Quick thoughts as to what prompted me to read some more on it:

Struggled a bit with my run this morning.  My paces were slower than usual and my HR was spiking more frequently.  This despite not working since Sunday night, getting good sleep, feeling rested and fueling well the last couple days.  I was hungrier than usual the last 2 days but just allowed myself to fuel and listened to what my body was saying.  I also didn't run yesterday.  So, everything should have gone right this morning and yet it didn't.

However, I remember this has happened to me a couple times already in the last 6 weeks since I started doing this.  I went back to look and it seemed like after I had each of these "setbacks", I then took a jump forward shortly afterward.  It's strange.

Instead of seeing gradual interval improvements, I've almost noted more of a steady state, steady state, steady state then..... decent increase.  That's happened twice so far.  I went from 11:30-12:00 min paces to 11 minute paces almost overnight at one point.  Then, almost 2 weeks ago my runs all jumped to the 10:30 range.

So, while I'm not expecting some huge jump again, I wonder if today's struggles indicate some kind of reset again in the future.

I look at @The Iguana (the 18 miler) and @Zasada (this morning) with some of their recent runs and see some amazing HRs at good paces and hope I can sniff anything close to that some day.  @JShare87 was flying this morning at his calculated MAF.  Would be amazing to see this allow him to absolutely crush his next marathon.
Thanks for the article and shout-out. I can’t help but think the same thing. I’m trying not to get too excited about it, but if I keep getting 30-45 miles a week in at these paces leading up to marathon training, I think I can run a great race.

Who's the leader in the clubhouse now for time spent analyzing run data vs time spent actually running?
If you add reading about training philosophies then I feel bad for the poor soul who spends more time on running while not actually running than I.

at the risk of derailing the insults and abacus training plans...

is there a fantasy league made up with people from this thread?
Joking aside, it's been done, but it's been a while. Or else I just wasn't invited to participate. :shrug:

Well if there *is* a BAMF football league, I'd love to join in the reindeer games.

-or-

I'm happy to create a league if ppl are interested and no one else wants to do it.

All kidding aside, I've been running an auction league for the last 20 years that's pretty low-key.  We always have a few open spots if any of you guys want to join.  $100 buy-in ($65 entry, ~$7 site fees, $28 in prepaid transactions).  Online auction (RTSports), noon CDT on 25Aug.

So if we don't get enough for a full league here I can accommodate a few.  Or we can do a full league here.  Or both.  Just throwing options out there.

@gianmarco, I'm not sure if this would be helpful for your MAF training but here is a link to the standard (same course) 10K I've been running since Feb.  Almost always run around the same time of day, at the same fatigue levels.  Only meaningful variable that changes is weather/wind.  60 observations.

If that doesn't come through with the chart (not sure if only I can see it), here's an image.

The way to look at the chart is that the first bunch of runs were in Feb as I got back to it after the Houston marathon.  I just ran as fast as I was comfortable with no guidance or HR target.

Then the big drop is when I started the Luke Humphrey plan which dictated a much slower pace.  MAF runs in disguise.  And over time I ran roughly the same effort/HR level at increasing paces up until the Calgary Marathon.  Some good progression there.

Now, post-Calgary, as you can see I'm on a slight downward trajectory.  Could be summer heat, could be my focus more on trails than streets.  But I guess the point is that I was able to run progressively faster at the same HR fairly consistently over a 15-week period.  There were SOS runs mixed-in as well so it wasn't purely MAF training.

But going back to Feb, there are a couple runs that I had an avg HR of 140-150 and at the same pace today I'm ~134.

Hope this helps.  If not, ignore!

In the past, we've just done a free ESPN league and drafted on that site as a snake draft. As of right now it looks like we have:

ChiefD

@gruecd

@bushdocda

@Zasada

@SFBayDuck

@TripleThreat

@The Iguana

@JShare87

@Ned

@pbm107

@tri-man 47

@-OZ-

@SteelCurtain

@jb1020

Anyone else?

Depending on when/how the draft is done, I'd probably play. pretty much guarantee it wouldn't take much to twist gian's arm to play. we've been in leagues together for more than a decade until this year.

Nah, I'm actually good.  Got out of all FF after this past year.  Not looking at doing any and looking forward to it.  I need time to study MAF.
