I've had so many people IRL ask me about a BQ and my response has always been a very easy "no way, I'm not even close - not even part of my plans"... then I keep reading in here, see people post about it a few times and wonder "what IS my time?" Then I look it up and am like "yeah, that's crazy" but then @MAC_32 quotes my post that I make about it being :thatclose: yet a million miles away and he's telling me "oh yeah, you could do it if you really put in the work"... and some part of my brain starts thinking, "well, maybe... it's not that crazy"... then @ChiefD starts saying well, I could probably do it by 2022 and I'm like... "hmmm... maybe I should think about trying to at least get a time..." 

Might be time to retire from this thread...

That’s how it goes brother.

Heck, my best marathon ever was 4:31 before this last one. And I finally saw what hard work can do: dropping to 3:58 was a major jump.

So now my thought process is: if I can just come into marathon training with a way better base (meaning less maintaining and more building), then I might have an actual shot at this thing. Weird how that progression goes.

yeah... I was just trying to scan my old posts to find where it wasn't that long ago I was convinced that doing one full marathon would be enough...

You did a 3:45 on effectively little training. It'd need to become a priority. But the step up would be massive with consistent 45 mpw's during an offseason. Then you can really attack a training cycle rather than just try to get through it.

ahh... see, here's where you bring me back to earth... while I know there is plenty of room to improve my mileage and training, that wasn't "little training!" That was a lot of work!*

*I totally get what you mean, just having a little fun there. In reality, it's a matter of deciding how much of a priority I can (and want) to make this - i.e. as I start to think about goals for next year, they will include getting more mileage than this year as well as some other stuff... but not sure they will rise to the level of making the commitment you are describing here.

It was a lot of work for year one. Build from it and a new normal will be established. My notes are at my office so this isn't 100%, but I was around but below 1k miles for years then the lightbulb turned on and - bam. 2k. And I am on track for my 4th year in a row over that number.

Her speed work would be on Wed/Fri (typically not days she's working or working very much) -- perfect

Her easy 5-8 mile runs are on Saturday and Sunday (she can run the 5-6 miles on Saturday with me as part of my long run if she wants or can get it in afterward relatively easily and we can run together on Sundays as well for 5-8 miles as scheduled).

And Iggy, when/where will you be in Michigan in July?  We'll be up at our summer cottage outside of Grand Rapids during the first two weeks in July.  It'd be cool if we get the chance to catch a run.

I'm 60mi away from 2K miles in 2019.  So what you're saying is that I just need to do this for three more years and I can grab a dumdum and BQ?

Oh, that.  That'd be late July, which is why it's feasible per the calendar.  I don't plan on making a decision - or bringing this up with the mrs. - for a few months ..after some slow-paced weeks over the holidays and an easier spring term at the university.  Also, I actually need to, you know, start running again.

Assuming everything works out with Marathon Tours and my "Seven Continents Club" membership the way I think it should, I'll likely be in London in 2021 and Tokyo in 2022 (or perhaps the other way around).  Still need to do Berlin yet, too.

More than likely the cause of my stomach pain is some bile in my stomach. But the doc just said some people just produce more at times. Will be on some medication as needed to help manage that.

So a nice relief. All systems go for the Hanson plan starting soon.

Like I tell everybody who will listen, the incremental benefit of each marathon training cycle on the next is exponential, not linear.  I truly believe that.

I've considered trying to do this.  I don't have much left in me in terms of trying to set a new marathon PR (maybe a couple of minutes), and the idea of "just finishing" a marathon in every state doesn't have any appeal to me.  The idea of BQ'ing in every state would still make it a challenge while allowing for some slowing down as I get older, since this would obviously take several years to do.

I'll be driving right by you... we will be in Mears, MI - about an hour +/- NW of Grand Rapids depending on where exactly you will be.

Our family cottage is on the "other" Silver Lake just SE of Rockford, MI.  Not sure we'll still be there as of the 15th, though, so we might not be able to connect.  :kicksrock:

The Germans were quick to tell me I failed in the lottery for 2020.  Might try Munich if Berlin eludes me for too long but not urgent. Will run over there at some point.

60 and sunny for my start tomorrow which is about 5 miles away. This is basically the beginning of getting my #### together for my next HM in February. I have a lot of work to do.

Woke up an hour early. Took care of the my first bathroom trip. Was a bit nervous for some reason but starting to feel a sense of calm come over me. Like, you’re a BMF kinda calm. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving, fellas!

Turkey trotting with my wife 2 kids and 2 of my 3 dogs (old man stayed home). Currently sitting in the car a couple of hundred yards from the start.

Race times are going in the right direction for me. I had a bit of a snag in mile 1 where I almost broke my ankle on a manhole cover which had way too much asphalt patch around it. Humid af here today too. Like I said before, this is my start so I had few expectations going in.

18:57 chip time, 18:51 on Garmin. Definitely a PR. Popped my hamstring at .75 miles in. Literally felt like I got sniped. Hopped up and had to make a choice. Said ##### it and pushed through it. Not good for my training. Oh well, I’m going to start pounding the liquor. Enjoy the day, fellas!

 
Nice PR!! Sorry about your hammy. Ive experienced the same thing so I know that today's race will be a little bittersweet. At least in a few weeks you'll remember the sub 19 and the hammy will be forgotten.

Well la-di-da I'm just gonna run a 5K Turkey Trot and pop a hammy less than a mile in and still run a sub 19 race and get a PR and be the BMF that I always am.

I feel like the opposite. Injury after injury. It’s the same leg as my nerve issue. I’ve been down the hammy road before. Not too concerned about this one. Some slow miles for a bit shouldn’t bother it too much. Really proud of myself today. It was a test of character, I made sure to remind myself who I was out there today.

Happy Thanksgiving fellas.  I'm thankful to you guys to have a group of people who support my running and understand the mental ups and downs that runners have to put up with.

Many thanks and hope you each have a wonderful day with your families.

MY UPDATE -- motivation continues to be low as I try to heal this hip.  I will try to run later this afternoon for a few miles to keep the legs moving.
