I think for someone trying to figure out their paces/efforts that the dreadmill may be more effective for intervals. The greater the experience the more I think you'll get out of challenging yourself to hit the paces without robot assistance.

Edit: what @The Iguana said in better detail.
Did the workout and I really enjoyed it - 10 one minute intervals at 7:30/mi. It wasn't easy but I bumped the last one up to 7:19 and did a minute and a half.  I don't think I would do as good a job maintaining the pace throughout and I definitely know I would struggle just finding the correct pace.

I like it.  As your body comes to "know" a 7:30 pace, or 8:00, or 8:30 ...then a 9:00 pace becomes easier to handle - physically and mentally.

An idea ...a recommendation made here with regularity ...is to run slow and easy.  In so doing, you develop your aerobic engine, and that's how you improve.  Seems weird, right?  We gotta run fast, run hard, make it hurt.  But the improvements are internal and much more nuanced.  It's about capillaries and mitochondria.  That's where our secret weapon lies!
I can run 8/mile comfortably, and 7:30/mile kind of comfortably, what should be my aim for a slow run?

Easy runs should be at a pace where you could tell a story to your running partner, if someone was with you.

If you're gasping between words/sentences, you're running too fast.

15 degrees with wind chill of 3 degrees for my run this morning.  Didn't feel that bad while I was out there, but I swear I almost froze to death walking from the parking lot to my office after stopping at the gym to take a shower.  Strange.

Mother nature is challenging me, but she's being reasonable getting me ready for winter. We got snow Saturday, but only enough to make Sunday's windy long run slippery. We got more snow Tuesday, but it packed in nicely. Made for a difficult run that night, but not one that killed my will. We got a lot more snow yesterday and the bottom fell out on conditions -  snow, 19, felt like 4 with > 20 mph wind. That killed my will. So just when I start grumbling about winter in my best Harry Lyme impersonation...the sun comes out today and the temp's go the right way for (at least) the next week.

So I appreciate the winter is coming nudge and that our reward is this. I'll be ready for your next round of haymaker's though.

My 10 day is looking awfully nice.

No excuses.

I just scheduled 50 miles over a 5 day period. Based on quick skim it looks like I never did that during marathon training in 2016 and I only did it at peak in 2018. So I know I shouldn't schedule more (I may)...and I probably shouldn't do that much (tough noogies)...but when us northerner's get stretches like this during this time of year...push those limits. And keep pushing until the bottom falls out again. It'll be much easier to justify a little extra rest whenever it happens too.

I had no intention of another long run yesterday. But my wife is on call every day next week and knew she wouldn't get out much so wanted to do it again. I agreed.

So when I looked at the upcoming weather, I figured this is my chance to maybe hit some mileage highs. Not looking to get inured but I think I've done enough at this point to tolerate it. Might hit 40 for the first time ever this week....

I see forecasted high temps in the 30s and 40s.  No complaints here.  That's PERFECT running weather.
Local's put up a nationwide bubble and the warmest (relative) air has Gian right in the bullseye. We're right outside the eastern edge and the northern went to Wisconsin; I was wondering if it was far enough to get to you or if you were in the next tier. We're getting similar, low-mid 40's. Looking forward to seeing a lot of miles logged over the next week in here!

Two weeks of vacation starts for me on Saturday.  Weather looks typically ####ty for Calgary, but I'm going to crank some serious elevation!  Bring it on!

Just throwing this out there as I just received this email:

Hello 2019 KT82 / SIUE Teams!

It's been awhile since I've emailed you all - I hope this email finds everyone well, enjoying a busy and fun holiday season, and doing some good winter training!

As you may have seen in yesterday's email, our team at GO! St. Louis made the official annoucement about the brand-new (but not new to you!) event that was born from our adventures at SIUE last June.  (annoucement is attached in case you missed it)

A part of that announcement included opening priority registration for you, our *true* inaugural teams, prior to opening registration for the general public.  This event will be limited to 200 teams, and is first-come, first-served, so if you would like a team space, I would encourage you to use this window of time to register!  We definitely anticipate the event selling out!

Details:

Mississippi Running Festival Relay

Saturday, May 30, 2020

https://gostlouis.org/events/mississippi-running-festival/ -- check out the event page, we added some new team options/concepts!

Priority Registration for 2019 teams (you!): December 19 - January 5

Open Registration: January 6 until sellout

How to register your team:

You will be sent a link from our registration platform, RunSignUp, that will have "Reserved Entry for Mississippi Running Festival" in the subject line.  This is your team's unique link to register.

You may forward this link to another team member if you, the captain, will not be participating this year.  Please do not forward to another individual not from your team.

Payment:

This year, we are using the option that allows for individuals to pay only their own portion.  The event is $100/person - regardless of team size. So you will only pay yours, and as you fill up the team, each individual will pay their portion.

Questions?

Feel free to email me back, or email Kristin Werner on our team (kwerner@gostlouis.org), and we can help.

We would LOVE to have you all back...I have such a special place in my memory and heart for all of you who lived through that first event with us, I hope you can bring out your team and come back and make it an even better, more fun event in 2020!  (and don't worry, I'll spend more than 8 days planning it .... )

Happy holidays

Mother ####ers went May 30?!?!?
I know, that was the first thing I thought too.  I know that doesn't work for you.

Interesting that they are doing options for 3 man, 6 man, and 9 man teams.  That's pretty cool.

I would be open to doing this again if the interest is there.  So.....

Once we had all schedules and I knew everyone would be done during that first week of June I told my wife not to schedule anything that first weekend...just in case. Welp.

hmmm... I'll have to look at schedules - my kid graduates high school sometime around there. Depending on what all is going on, I'd totally be up for doing that!

Sorry it sucks for Mac but I think that may be about the only weekend that would work for me. They messed something up with the schedule at the high school. My kid's last day of school is 5/29 but graduation isn't until 6/6.

Of course, I also have to juggle in a 25th wedding anniversary being on 6/10, memorial day weekend, my wife's birthday later in June... Going to be a busy start to summer!

As long as my wife works in admin at an elementary school and we can't leave our kids home alone then I'm generally handcuffed from early-mid May until the Monday after school's over. I teased myself into thinking June 1 may be early enough this year, but I guess KT82 just does the weekend after Memorial Day regardless of the date.

BRING THE KIDS!

BRING THE KIDS!
Haha, our kids have stuff going on too! My wife's schedule those few weeks just puts the burden on me to make sure they are where they need to be. What sucks is the kids events abruptly stop that Saturday. If this race were literally one day later then maybe I could catch a flight after everything ended that Saturday then find someone to be responsible for them Monday. C'est la'vie

I'm too slow for that group. The guys who showed up last year had a good chance of medaling that thing.  Then I started to run.

So, no. I'm not interested this year. May come down and just drink beer all day though and be a pack mule.
hogwash!

You and I could tag team foot rub.  :oldunsure:

Whoa.....guess who's currently in 3rd in the FFA on the time leaderboard through 4 days!??!!  And 1st place is Steve, and we know that guy doesn't count (right, @JShare87?)

ETA -- This will likely never happen again, so....

You could aim for anything in the range of 8:15-8:45/mile, I'd guess, since 8:00/mile is already comfortable.  As noted, the slow run should be at a conversational pace.  As an example, I use a slower breathing pattern for long(er) slow runs.  Instead of an in and out breath every two steps, I'll breath every third step.  (This past year, I actually switched to three steps on the inhale; two steps for the quicker exhale.  That's a more awkward rhythm, but as a former percussionist, I rather like that rhythm.   :loco:  ).  The general point, given what you state here, is to relax and do a bulk of your running at 8:00/mile or slower rather than feeling the need to push the 7:30/mile pace.  They're just easy, mindless miles ...but they are still productive miles!

Are your 8:00 and 7:30 times for running 1 mile and being done or running a longer distance...like 5 miles, 7 miles, etc...and keeping that pace throughout?

My best run of the summer was 8 miles in an hour. Felt fine. I can run 8:00 miles easily, but I think my definition might be different.  I never feel fatigued, by I’m a very wheezy runner.  Not having any conversations at pretty much any pace.

Ran a little over 6 miles in a little over an hour. Felt like a nice slow run, but conversation would be tough. Heart rate was mostly around 125, but creeped up to 140s near the end. Still quite sweaty even at slower pace.

I’m in.....provided my wife gives the approval.  The few days before Christmas is not the time to have this conversation with her tho.

The relay will be 5 weeks post Boston so I’ll be prepared to run on a 3, 6, or 9 man team.

For how long can you run that 8 min mile comfortably?

i would guess 9-9:15 is probably a good easy pace for now.
