Ran a 10k - Official Thread (9 Viewers)

I just look at VO2 max on Garmin Connect.  Although I have no idea how accurate the actual number is, viewing that stat on an annual graph perfectly lines up with training, race performance, and my gut feeling of my relative fitness. Does it do the same for you?
I hadn't focused on the VO2 max before, but took a look today.  My trend line over the past six months does correlate quite well with training.  From mid-June to now, it stayed in the range of 50-54.  It hit a peak of 54 in early/mid July (which corresponds to a hard training week at our summer cottage) and in mid October (final push before the MCM marathon).  Today's run showed a drop to 49, reflecting my slack-off over the past weeks.  @SteelCurtain mentioned a reading of 56.  I'm curious what others are seeing.

Yeah, I know. His foretelling in his first upload isn't promising.

This whole thing is cracking me up because I think this might be the 3rd time I've ever looked at that leaderboard. I love it.

Oh, and finally hit 40 miles for a week. Feel great, too.
Did 41 this week, would have gone 9 but it was raining and 40°, and I didn't feel like it. So I rode on the trainer, but the computer wasn't starting right so I stopped after half an hour of stretching and spinning. Turned it off, started cleaning the garage, turned it back on and the computer worked.

But then I didn't feel like it, so I didn't.

My hikes/runs aren't super-fair to be measured on time versus runs.  While I do run the downhills, I hike the uphills and that takes a lot of time.  It's not like I ran for 3.5 hours today.  But I'm on vacation and want to get as much elevation in as possible.  I don't always have time when the weekends are more about getting errands done on the same days as a run.

I did come across this leggy gal today en route, though!

@gianmarco whipped me on distance this week.  Nice 40mi week!

Mine's 48 right now. I'm looking on my phone so can't tell what it was at other times but I'll check when I get home tomorrow.

I don't have a lot of data since I just got my watch in September...but, I'm at 52, which is the highest number I have reached.  Its dipped from this twice before, both times occurred following a few days off -- after my HM and 15K.

It a good personally relative score IMO.  Got mine to 55 in spring HM build and got back to 54 recently. 53 today and don’t tell it I’m drunk or it will dock me.

Was able to look at desktop site on my browser. Looks like I hit 51 twice. Once right around my HM last October and this year in late April just before my duathlon race. That makes sense as I was in my best shape at those 2 times, I think. Hovered at 50 for most of the spring when I was running almost every day.

I was down to 45 in late September so I'm trending back up. I would guess it does a decent job at trends from what I can see.

I had mine tested formally in the summer (on a treadmill with the mask), and it came in 2pts lower than what my watch was telling me.  So in the ballpark.

My watch peaked at 55 in the summer (test gave me 53), and is now sitting at 54.

Had my appointment this morning... semi-useless, and yet not. They don't have a lot of tools that their disposal at the clinic here on site so they are going to send me a couple referrals - one completely unrelated to running for an opthamologist to look at a chronic/recurring stye I have on my eye that I'll probably get to have cut out. Should be fun!

As for the shin, she ruled out the 2 biggest concerns - she's certain it's not a blood clot or a stress fracture so that's good news. She agrees that it is some kind of cyst - which is basically just inflamed tissue. I'm getting an ortho referral to have them take a closer look at it to determine exactly what kind of cyst it is and what, if anything, should be done about it. Basically said that rest would help it but didn't ban me from running or anything if the pain is tolerable. That makes me happy considering I have some time off work after today and was looking forward to getting some runs in before doing a 5k in a couple weekends. Doesn't sound like I'm being too big an idiot if I stick with that plan - assuming the swelling and/or pain doesn't increase significantly. So far the pain level and swelling are both relatively low - annoyingly noticeable but by no means significant. Mostly has been a clear signal that something "isn't right" but that's about it.

2019 Year-end Report

This was a fun year and fulfilling. Happy to say I’m really enjoying this journey.

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Goal(s) for 2019:

5k (< 20min) NO!

HM (sub 100min) YES!

Marathon (3:3x) YES!

Volume will be more than 1,500 but probably less than 2,000.  YES!

New accomplishments or PRs in 2019:

HM and marathon PRs. 2 training cycles that taught me a lot. 1 encounter with the hood of a SUV that taught me a lot too.

Your proudest and/or best race (or moment within a race):

Proud of my mile 26 in December in context of the prior few miles especially. I was shot and slipping away and pulled out an effort from the depths.  I gained some deep confidence in trusting training and to trust myself. I trusted a slightly faster pace early in marathon and had the confidence to go for an A day. Glad I made those race day calls bc I went into race full of doubt.

A race or training disappointment during 2019:

I wanted to race a few 5ks in the early part of the year but couldn’t get right physically with some groin/hammy stuff and then mentally I couldn’t commit to doing it anyway as I didn’t want to sacrifice the half I wanted to race in May. Hungry to build strength and speed in winter to be healthy to race 5k in April.

I will include my disappointment in not being at MCM for @tri-man 47 when I bailed on spectating the rainy morn.  What a ####### stud he is.

Total training volume during 2019:

I’ll be just about 1,900 for 2019.  Really not into the past few runs so we’ll see. Pleased with that volume and was a bit nervous I was increasing volume too quickly in first half of the year, I held up well as a whole.  I was keeping track of my YoY volume and I actually ran less in marathon cycle than 2018 as I felt I was on the edge a few times.  Shifted some workouts around and made some modifications that I wouldn’t have had the experience to make before.  PT continues to be big boost physically and mentally as well.

Lesson(s) you’ve learned during the year:

* I can handle more volume

* I need more volume to push out the late fade that got me in both the half and the marathon

* I need to mix more goal pace miles into long runs next marathon cycle

* I need to be stronger

Best and/or funny memories of other guys’ training or races in 2019:

Too many efforts and moments to recall but I have a few...

Love that a bunch of you ran that relay together.  Big time special and I love the IRL stuff.

Raceday tracking and support is just the best

Dums dums and headphone cord still baffles me @MAC_32

Great hanging in DE with the dude @pbm107

Forever blown away by @JShare87 incredible generously offering up his vaporflys.  Glad I was able to put them to work.

Goal(s) for 2020:

Race that 5k

More start lines in 2020

More variety in training

Get stronger in the gym

Musings:

Am I going to Seattle and if I don’t am I running a marathon this year?

Can I balance strength, base and race specific training?

Will I use paragraphs and formatting more consistently?

I have a lot of improvement to come staying healthy is the key to it all.  My overarching time result goal is to get BQ and I have a few years at this cutoff and then get a drop at 45.  More bites to come on that goal, not sure how big and when yet.

Finally, you all contribute to my joy in running. Thank you for the steady drum beat of humor, support and advice.  I don’t have a running tribe locally but I do have one thanks to you.

I was planning to take today off.  My legs are pretty tired - but it is going to be 52/sunny, and it seems like a sin not to try and squeeze something in today.  This whole week looks about the same too, may have to skip the rest days.

I usually take a day or two off around now just because there is too much going on. The long range forecast popped on the tv while my wife and I were in bed this morning, trying to get small humans to go elsewhere while we unsuccessfully attempted to coffee in peace. She saw all of those numbers starting with 5's paired with that yellow thing every day then before I said a word she turned to me and said, yes we will make sure you can run every day. She's the best. I'm tired. But...can't rest in this.

Definitely still feeling remnants of the pneumonia/bronchitis I had.  Lungs felt like they were going to explode...and no matter what breathing techniques I tried could not get that deep breath I needed.  Had to walk a touch on the second mile, not a lot just enough to clear the lungs.

Still got the 2 miles in :)

I also love this.

I threw my name in the Angeles Crest lottery last week when I saw a FB post that it was about to close.  I figured my odds of getting in would be 20% at best based on the number of people entered and their lottery system, and the fact that I know people that have been trying for 2-3 years to get in.

What do you know, just got the email that I'm in.

This is the race that brought me to my knees last year, or should I say brought me to shivering to a cot.  Time to #getsome redemption.

Ran a hungover, but ambitious run on Chicago lakefront this morning.  Since my phone has been flaky on GPS, ran with the old Garmin Forerunner 610.  Mile 1: 6:47; Mile 2: 6:55; Mile 3: 6.52.  Should get me on the top of the Team FFA leaderboard for several segments, right?   The sync got all messed up cause Garmin Express is a POS and now files are gone from both the watch and my computer.  It wasn't Iguana marathon level of frustration, but pretty annoying nonetheless.

I think part of the issue is that the stupid software always asks to update right in the middle of a sync.

Really liking the Strava annual report they do for us.

(Hint, if you're not there get there!)

Was not expecting Friday to be my most active day of the week (would have thought Saturday or Sunday)

I need 4 more hours running, 2 hours riding, 35 miles running to make nice round numbers.

I couldn't find you for a minute there, given the cheetah camouflage.  Looking forward to you getting redemption/revenge on that course!
That was just the top blanket, with 4 more underneath it (2 of them those shiny mylar ones).  It sure was stylish though!

I'm hoping to avoid any and all cots and blankets this time around.

In the past, we've just done a free ESPN league and drafted on that site as a snake draft. As of right now it looks like we have:

@ChiefD

@gruecd

@bushdocda

@Zasada

@The Iguana

@JShare87

@Ned

@pbm107

@tri-man 47

@-OZ-

@jb1020

 I've set up a league already on Yahoo (had some spare time today). So, here's what I'm thinking.

14 Teams

2 Divisions

6 playoff teams - 2 division winners and 4 wild card

Start: 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1 Flex (WR,TE,RB), 1 TE, 1 Kicker, 1 Defense, 6 Bench

So 15 round draft

Entry Fee: $50

Payouts: $700: $450 for first, $200 for second, $50 for third

Everyone hangs onto their money and we just have you send it directly to the winners at the end. We all basically know each other here, and I don't want to hold money.

Draft on Monday night of Labor Day Weekend. September 2nd. 8 PM central. We should all be home from weekend activities by then.

Thoughts?

So 4th - 14th are all going to send money like this (no sense in winners paying anyone):

8 pay $50 to the winner ($400)

3 pay $50 to 2nd place ($150)

3rd place plays for free

I may not be able to beat any of you at any distance under 50K, but I'll always have 2019 Fantasy Football.  Good thing, as I've got that unexpected $380 Ultrasignup fee that hit my credit card yesterday to pay for.

How about we just go in order of the above list, $50 each first 8 pay me, last 3 pay @TripleThreat, and @SteelCurtain played for free - that work for everyone?  Payment details in spoiler tags.

Thanks @ChiefD for organizing this thing, and for that epic draft order video!

Revenge race.  Love it.  Can't wait for the ###-kicking, @SFBayDuck!
