Ran a 10k - Official Thread (8 Viewers)

OK. Off I go. Let's see if I can get this in under two hours. Stomach is a little surly after drinking about 8 beers last night, so there could be a stop or two.

Have to run loops in the neighborhood since I can't poop in public anymore.

One man parade - entertaining the home bound today. Booyah :boxing:

Good luck, GB! You’re gonna do great!

The quarantine backyard ultra started a couple of hours ago.  Run 4.167 miles ...every hour ...for as long as you can.  Winners tend to go for a good 60+ hours straight.  I see old man Gene Dykes is participating (his first couple of runs popped up on my Strava feed).  Dykes is starting off with very easy 10 minute miles, giving himself about 18 minutes before starting up again.   :loco:

Live feed of the elites.  Kinda cool to hear them chatting with each other between loops.

Really wish I had heard of this earlier so I could sign up and get a few loops in.

Perfect weather here in DFW for it today.  55F and cloudy.  Moderate, cool north wind.

How long until I get nasty looks for not wearing a face mask while running?
Are you seeing others doing it?  None of the runners/(dog)walkers I saw this morning had one on.  And everyone was downright friendly and made an effort to keep as distanced as possible.

Not the runners although I don't see many.  Walkers?  Maybe a third to a half today.  There has been a huge shift to masks around here recently.  I went to the grocery store last night and I was in the minority being maskless.  If trends continue, almost everyone will be wearing masks in a few weeks.

I was wondering the same thing.  I only saw two other runners today (which is not terribly unusual, there is a very low level of pedestrian traffic on most of my routes) and one had a mask on.  Probably about 1/4 of the walkers I saw did.  It bothered my logical side that out of the people in the grocery store parking lot I passed twice, only about 1/10 of them did by my quick count, when it seems like the grocery store is a much more infectious environment than a suburban sidewalk.

I was doing some Strava recon this week.  I had to make some inferences and for people that weren't on Strava at all I assumed they were equal to their same round pick (not the best, I know, but I wanted it to be objective).
Team Grue: 😬
Avg. PR's - 5K : 6:37/mi, 10K : 7:01/mi, 1M :6:05
Avg. 2020 mileage : 407
Team Juxt: 😀
Avg. PR's - 5K : 6:41/mi, 10K : 7:06/mi, 1M : 6:13
Avg. 2020 mileage : 440

Nothing earth shattering, I think we knew after the draft that Team Grue was probably a bit on the quicker side but also a little more banged up...  Maybe @ChiefD can chime in with the Vegas line and where the sharps are going...

Saw a few of my friends on Facebook are doing this, and I passed a dude up the street who did it as well.  Very cool.

In at 2:08.

Apparently BLT sandwiches, tater tots, and 8 beers is an improper fuel up for a half marathon. So we have all learned something today.
:hifive:

You inspired me to make 13.1 the distance for my #OperationInspiration virtual race today.  You got me by 20 minutes, I came in at 2:28:43.  I did have just a bit more vert than you, although I see yours wasn't exactly flat!

Since we can't park at the trailheads anymore I ran 2 miles there, through a park for a bit then headed up to the top of Mt. Burdell.  Came back down a gnarly section of single track (caught a toe at one point and realized I should probably be a little more careful than usual), then back down and home.  Drizzly for most of it, poured on me for a bit, but the hail that had been forecast held off.

As for masks I passed 4-5 runners, three mountain bikers, and a couple of family groups hiking, nobody wearing a mask.  It'll be a lot different than that the next time I have to go to the store.  I'm ready to be mask shamed when I'm sporting one of the 4-5 n95s I have from an open box from the fires here two years ago.

My HR has been crazy erratic over the last few weeks.  I'm willing to give some consideration to this condensation-cadence-HR-averaging hypothesis.  I also have a half dozen other possible explanations.
There is a pattern with my heart rate that I can't ignore.

On Saturdays, it has been good.  For example, today: 13.2/6:53/144.  Last Saturday, 15.1/7:22/132.   There are other good Saturdays too.   This is where I'd expect it to be after running over 100 days in a row.

However, during the week it's been much worse.  Days this week,  for example:  Monday: 10.0/7:37/139, Tuesday: 5.0/8:22/133, Wednesday: 6.1/7:42/143.

I've gone through several possibilities on why this is.  Watch malfunctions, possible illness, allergies, dehydration, etc.  There might be something to a limited degree with these but they don't explain why Saturdays are different.

I think the difference is sleep and stress.  I usually sleep well Friday nights and sleep in on Saturday mornings.  During the week I've been sleeping less and even have mornings that I wake up at 3:00 or 4:00 and can't fall back to sleep.  Work stress due to the virus is the culprit.

So, I'll try to change that.  I wake up at 5:00 even though I don't really need to be at work until 9:00.  Although I like some of the free time in the morning before and after the run, I can cut some of that and get a little more sleep for the nights I sleep until the alarm.  I think the work stress is subsiding too as crazy as that might sound.

Injury-wise, I might be slowly getting better.  I have two right hamstring issues - one toward the knee, the other up by the glute. This has been going on since October.  I had a particularly bad patch a few weeks ago but it's been better since and I think I'm finally learning how to manage it.

So, with all that said, I think I'm finally really to set some goals this year.

For our 5K:  I'm not expecting much and I don't think I'm ready for a top time.  I'll be happy with anything under 18:30.

For our 10K:  Hopefully I'll get a boost from the 5K and get other stuff figured out.  My 10K PR is my weakest.  I actual beat it during my half marathon PR.  My goal will be to average a hair under 6:00 pace, whatever that calculates out to be.

For our 1 miler:  I'm most excited about this.  I'm going to try to find a slightly downhill, with-the-wind mile try to haul ### and break 5:00.

I’ll wear one for grocery store, gas station, etc. But running? That’ll be a cold day in hell.
I won't wear one running either.  Maybe I'll just stay off the sidewalks and bike paths where there are more people and run my street courses that I use when there is ice and snow.

Let’s call it a draw!

Nice work.

My running has been sporadic and sketchy lately for no good reason. It lifts my spirits to go but I still find myself skipping some of them. Almost did it again today after not getting out early this morning. Then I pop in here and read about @ChiefD and his run.

Not only did I go out but I went further than planned and faster. I was going to do a favorite route that is about a 10k. But as I ran and thought about chief, I decided to do more. Went across the street at the end of the "out" part of my out and back. It's the only subdivision I know that has roundabouts in it. Every time I came to them, I did a full circle in honor of @ChiefD

Thanks for getting my lazy butt out there!

51 miles on 6 days of running this week plus another 86 miles in 7 rides on the Peloton. Also 100 push-ups/day.

Plan is to keep this up for the foreseeable future. Just need to add back 2-3 weekly core workouts.

I also ran 51 miles. But rode 0 :bag:

I think i figured out a good strength regimen though. 3x50 walking lunges, 4x25 push ups then try to add on to the 4th set, 3x15 dips super set with 60 seconds of medicine ball abs (scissors/twists/boats), 3x10 box jumps (the external ac unit will do) super set with 3x10 russians (the bottom step on the stairs to the deck will work), single leg rdl (using what's left in the bag of weed and feed as weight). Haven't given up trying to find something to squat-to-press with yet, but I'm running out of ideas.

Quarantine Backyard Ultra - I'm finding it hard to follow along.  I do see a list of people that dropped out, which is a lot over the first 15 laps or so (they started at 9 am EST, so those dropouts would be before the first night-long effort).  The dropouts start to winnow down after that.  Not sure how many are carrying on, now, into night two.  I saw on Strava that Gene Dykes finished up after 24 loops (so through 8 a.m. this morning), which is 100 miles, though he had thoughts of going 150 miles.

Solo queuing, played Rocket League with "TheyCallMe10K".  Should've recruited him for the thread, unless he's already here...
