Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

I had peachy conditions out there this morning. Really really enjoying that being done.
Thanks for the support all and #goteamgru. My note in my picture did not withstand sweat so good.

Yeah, I definitely didn't pad my numbers enough.  Would need a big PR to outperform as much as some of these guys  :scared:

One downside to setting a PR in a 5k by setting a 1mile PR during that 5k is understanding that now means one will need to set another PR for their 1mi run.  #teamsuffering

After that 400 you ran a few weeks ago, I have high expectations for your mile time!

Someone needs to pay @BassNBrew off to run a 2hr 5k
Been sick for most of the last month. Finally started feeling better this week. Been looking for my sunroof watch charging cord and finally gave up and ordered one this morning. Last used it in my truck so I suspect it’s in a Lowe’s parking lot or one of 15 properties I’ve been to. Likely will have to take the DNF unless amazon is early on their delivery time

Virtual 5K

I haven't been running much and have probably given up on the 2500 mile challenge but once I get past April and the weather warms up, I'll hopefully find my motivation.  There really is few better feelings for me than running at 5 a.m. on a summer morning watching the sun rise.  So those 10 mile runs are awesome in the summer.  Winter and cold mornings in spring are tough for me to find my motivation.  Anyway, this is my long story of explaining my 5K prediction. I haven't run a ton, and did very little speed except two workouts recently. I wasn't sure I was worth a 2nd round pick quite honestly, but I wanted to try to earn that high of a pick. I thought 21:20 was probably realistic and I believe I submitted that time before I knew we could use a downhill course.  A couple weeks ago I did a 5K practice run on a flat course in the afternoon and ran 22:00 and that was about as hard as I could run.  Probably could have gone a touch faster (21:45ish) if it was race conditions...even virtually.

My plan was to run Thursday morning to give myself the option to run Sunday as well in attempt 2 if I could find a better place or see how my legs would respond.  Wednesday -- I ran an easy 1.7 miles in the evening to prep.  Woke up Thursday morning to snow on the ground.  ####!  Scrapped the race and decided to go with Friday morning.  (Snow again rolling in for this evening into Saturday....its mid April for crying out loud.)

Looking at the weather, Friday AM would be 29 degrees, but if I could wait a touch it would warm up to around 40....perfect.  My schedule had from 9:15 to 11 off. This would be ideal.  Unfortunately, my meeting went late and didn't end until 9:50.  I still needed to poop and get dressed.  Did that and I was rushing around, also threw on my Vaporflys for the first time since Indy marathon in November.  My wife dropped me off at the start (after we measured it in the car from the finish).  I did a brief one mile warmup.  Would have preferred two miles but time was running short.  Did my warmup.  Found a decent spot to start and I was off.

Mile 1 -- 6:13 -- All I knew was I didn't want to leave anything out there. When I sprint, I breathe really loud.  My wife made a comment that you can hear me from the other side of the track (from the other day when we both went there to run.)  The nice thing about running by myself (as opposed to a regular race), I'm not self conscious about it.  I didn't check this thread or the spreadsheet, but I knew that @gruecd and @-OZ- had crushed their runs.  (I do take pride in @gruecd posting on facebook about his new PR and everyone is bowing down to him and I just did an angry emoji.  I'm guessing a couple of his friends think I'm an ##### because of it.)  I definitely knew I was going out at a pace that was over my head a touch but it was downhill a little so I didn't care, plus I needed to put a big performance in due to #TeamGrue's hot start.

Mile 2 -- 6:39 -- This mile had rolling hills and by about 1.75 miles, my legs were absolutely toast.  In fact, at 1.75, my average pace for that mile was 6:18, but there is a small hill in the last quarter mile and my legs felt like they were in cement.  It was painful and I would look at my watch a bit too much but I really just wanted the stupid race over.  To be at 6:18 3/4 of the way through the mile and finish with 6:39 pace for the mile showed how bad I was struggling.

Mile 3 -- 6:33 -- is mostly downhill with a couple uphills, but the wind was blowing right in my face.  (At my house, the wind was calm....and it still is right now.)  As I hit those uphills, I didn't have much pop. Plus admittedly, the downhills were almost too steep.  Tough to really let the legs go as I felt like I needed to brake on a couple of the hills.  In any event, lungs were burning.  At 2.85, I realized sub 20 was a possibility.  I pushed hard the last 1/4 mile to try to make that happen.

Last 0.11 -- 5:47 pace -- just emptied the tank. I actually had a little more hill I could have used, but such is life.  I looked at 3.10 to see I was at 20:00 but wanted to get the 3:11 just in case Strava decided to screw me over.

Overall -- 3:11 miles at 20:03.7 for 6:27/mile pace.

The 5K is really a stupid distance.  I can't stand it.  I don't enjoy it and the feeling that my entire body is about to explode.  I much prefer the pain of a marathon. With a 5K, it's really painful for about 18-20 minutes for me. With a marathon, its really painful for about 20 minutes as well.  At least the marathon has 2:45 of enjoyment before I'm in the pain cave.

Unfortunately, I had an 11 a.m. meeting so there was no cool down. I'm sure I'll pay for that later.

Oh, and @gruecd and I are still doing that stupid pushup challenge (today is day 24) and I have yet to do a single pushup today.  🙂

Oh that sucks.  I propose an amendment allowing BNB to run as long as it is within 24 hours after receiving the cord.  I want him to be able to participate.

Or use your phone and download the free RunKeeper app and have it track you.

Strava on your phone would work, too.

I second that motion.

Overall time was 18:10, average 5:51/mile, PR by almost 30 seconds at 43 years young.  Not bad for an endurance monster. ;)

The only thing that pisses me off, and I really wish that I wasn’t so obsessive, is that I didn’t run the extra hundredth of a mile and stop at 3.11 so that I’d “officially” cover the full 3.10686 miles and Strava would acknowledge the 5K PR.  I didn’t stop the watch immediately (waited a second or two) when it said 3.10, so even if the Garmin was perfectly accurate (unlikely), I ran something more than 3.10000 but less than 3.10686.
What I'm reading is you didn't really run the full distance?  I think you need to re-run it so we have a time that we can count!  🙂

#TeamJuxt runs the full distance.

Team jux needs me to post a crappy time.

In fairness to #TeamGrue, if @SFBayDuck is unable to run, then a DNF by @BassNBrew would balance that out.  They're both BMF All-Stars, but they matched each other with rather slow 5K predictions.
Took today off from work, so working to catch up on the thread which I haven't dipped into all week.  That's what happens when I can't run - I don't even want to read about other people's running :(

The hip continues to improve, but it's still sore.  I may try to jog a little this weekend during a dog walk or two this weekend. But unless y'all want a Dog Walk 5K time as part of this, I'm out for race 1 with hopes to get back for the 10K.

Sorry to hear. I guess this works out with us both dnfing until the 10k

In keeping with the general awesomeness around here, I just crushed a 45-min Peloton workout.  Total output 692kj over 45 minutes, almost 8% more than my previous PR (641).  Average output 256 watts.  I know @-OZ- and @JAA and some of the other cycling guys will appreciate that.  Had fears of dying at the end.

ETA:  I was planning to run an easy 6 recovery later.  Not sure that's going to happen...

Crushing it

So when are we getting #teamtri together?  I'd suggest the rocket man as an intro. 🏊

22:00 a couple of weeks ago about as hard as you could go on a flat course.

Today, 20:00 on a hilly course with wind in your face on the 3rd mile.

Yeah, definitely no PEDs going on here. 😉

I don't know if this is normally what it is, but 90 day free trial Peloton app
That's a good deal for the app, but man, the bike is soooooo worth it.  I was skeptical when Mrs. Grue said that she wanted to buy one (and I was kinda right about her barely using it), but man, I love that thing.  The equipment itself is top-notch, and the quality of the programming sets it apart.  I just hope it's not too long before they can get back in the studio and start producing new content again...

ETA:  The instructors aren't bad to look at, either...
