Ran a 10k - Official Thread (9 Viewers)

my running has slowed down a bit with summer in full swing. golfing once or twice a week, people over my house drinking poolside most weekends, and other stuff going on. The beer drinking isn't helping my fitness plans but I still squeeze in 3 runs a week.

ran 6.3 miles on Sunday at a slower pace (10:19 avg), trying to keep my HR lower and go longer. took me 1:05 which is as long as I've ever ran in my life.

did 3.1 miles yesterday at a much more rigorous pace but was slightly disappointed with a 26:12 time

looking to put in another long, slow run tomorrow. hopefully 7 miles if its not too hot and sticky out.

Ran my work 3 miler today, it was cancelled yesterday because of rain. Ran a 17:34 with splits of 5:49, 6:05, and 5:40. This is a 46 sec PR for me on this course so I happy about my fitness level. According to McMillan the equivalent 5K is 18:21 and my 5k PR is 18:19 so not bad considering the suck index was 148.
Awesome race, my friend! That's some serious speed! :tebow:

What is this team strava vs team garmin crap? I thought people who have a garmin can auto connect it to a strava account?
They're too cool for Strava, which prompted the competition.

 Thats what I do.

Hey Beer, I saw your FB post about getting fat :porked: I need some motivation to drop some weight quick. After a week in Mexico, knee surgery 2 days after my return and laying on my ### for the last week I am approaching doughy territory. I'm sure the long weekend won't help either. Thoughts on a thread Injured Reserve List Biggest Loser Contest post 4th Holiday? I start PT on Monday and need to get back in a competitive mindset and think this may help.
I'm in need of dropping some tonnage. I'm still up about 10 lbs from where I was for my race last fall, and ideally I should probably be 5-10 lbs below that.

Whoa. WTF happened??
Like a dumb ###, I got fed up with the winter back in March and went on a bit of a training bender one week. I did 3 spin classes, 2 swims of 2,500 yards and treadmill runs of 7 & 8 miles or so. The day after, I flew to Atlanta and had planned on a rest day, but the temps were in the 70s when I got there so I decided to run even through I was sore. Either on the last treadmill run, or running in Atlanta, I apparently tore my medial meniscus. Like a genius, I thought it would just heal and kept on training for two months before I decided to see a doc. A quick test of the knee ID the possible tear and an MRI confirmed it. So I had it scoped last Tuesday. All appears to have gone quite well, but the recovery is going to take much longer then I expected. I start PT Monday in hopes of being able to move quickly around XC courses by lat August and do my annual trail relay (with TriMan & crew) the last weekend in September. Kind of hard to picture 12+ tough dirt/mud miles at the moment while I am in the couch hooked up to a Cry-O-Cuff (although, this thing is almost better than sex at the moment). I am really trying to stay positive. I had one heck of an injury free run; with my last real injury being a foot injury back in 2007.

Wow Shawn - that's awesome. 3 hours on the bike is impressive no matter your weight but at 3+ bills is phenomenal - hope your ### survived all that. Keep up the great work!

I keep meaning to take my bike over to my neighbors to get a tune up - he's an avid cyclist and offered to fix it up for beer - best kind of payment option! We have a couple of nice longer trails so I don't have to ride on the roads - I may do that eventually but I'm not ready for that yet.
I bought shorts and it was my first ride with them. I could not have made it without I don't think.

Anybody had to stretch their shoes that are a little tight? I bought some Sauconys online. Been wearing 11 1/2 forever with Asics and Nikes. First time out the shoes felt great but are a little snug. Had 3 runs them now and they are just a little too tight in the toe area. Too late to return them for a bigger size.

Hey, I swam! Got in my first swim since last summer ...about 15-20 minutes of lake swimming at our cottage in Michigan. A little tough to find a rhythm early, but got it going and felt great. I'll catch a few more as the week moves on.

For you TomTom users...they pushed out a GPS update. My watch is definitely measuring differently than it was before. I ran identical routes on 6/29 and today but they now measure longer. 6.01 vs 6.07. It's no big deal, but caught me by surprise when the first mile buzzed me before I was expecting it. Now Strava is even more off than before.

Hmmmmm, that's 1% diff. That's almost a quarter mile at 20miles. :nerd:
It's actually probably right now. When I was running my TomTom was consistently short to every other watch in the group.

While most Atlanta runners were downtown running the Peachtree I decided to head out in the rain for my own 10k. I finished but it wasn't pretty (TWSS) - I've got the chaffed nipples to prove it (also TWSS).

Happy 4th to everyone!

Good luck to Mac, CCC2 and anybody else racing this holiday weekend!
Thx, I limited myself to five beers last night. Thankfully party number one doesn't have much to tempt me with today, but party number two is full of craft beer drinkers. A lot of will power testing this evening, wish me luck...

:goodposting:

No truer words have ever been said.

No tempo or speed work for me this week. I decided I didn't really need to focus on that after my race last weekend. Also this was my first "official" marathon training week so I wanted to get in a lot of miles.

Monday: 6.27/ 7:51/ 130

Tuesday: 11.19/ 7:47/ 134

Wednesday: 8.02/ 7:41/ 132

Thursday: 10.45/ 8:15/ 125

Friday: 6.51/ 7:36/ 134

Saturday: 20.16/ 7:53/ 130

Sunday: 7.67/ 8:16/ 123

That totals 70.27 miles for the week.

I'm trying out Duck's "only drink when you're thirsty" strategy and I've noticed I'm drinking a lot less. Probably drank less than 50 oz. of water Saturday. For Saturday I also took a gel every half hour (also from an article Duck posted). I didn't bonk, so that's good. We'll see how this goes in the weeks to come.

Good luck to Mac, CCC2 and anybody else racing this holiday weekend!

I kept it to 3 and a departure time as it was getting dark, pretty cool driving through the city seeing all of the fireworks shows. I was surprisingly alert when the 5 am alarm went off. Changed up the pre race diet to better mirror standards, just having everything about 4 hours earlier than usual. So simple yet for some stupid reason never done it before, never again.Anyway, this race is in the middle of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's a two loop course with a 5 mile option. The first three plus miles are a single track roller coaster while the final two plus are best described as a slow death. Getting ahead of myself, but to put into context the elevations gain on this trek is 1,197 feet. Not bad for NE Ohio. I negative split this last year in 1:28:45. I went out a little tentative since the distance was new and I was still a bit green regarding trail running. I don't fault myself for doing that, but the one mistake I was not going to repeat was getting bottle necked at the beginning again. It was basically a 150 meter downhill side hill sprint to the single track trail and I was buried. Now that I knew what to expect I was determined to get to the woods in the top 10 and not have to deal with that again.

Well, the race director took care of that for us. He added a half mile loop before getting to that part of the woods. I was wondering where he would shorten the course, but I didn't alter my approach much. I run better downhill than uphill and most of this loop is down, so it actually calmed some of my nerves. I was able to cruise the beginning instead of wasting energy to get into position.

Mile 1 - 7:33

Mile 2 - 7:43

Mile 3 - 8:05

The roller coaster went just about to plan - fast start, get into position, attack the downs, and control my heart rate on any climbs. I'm actually surprised my mile 3 split was so close to my mile 2 as we are still going down on mile 2 and the real challenging climb out of the woods is towards the end of mile 3. I remembered some of the tougher turns from last year, but almost made a big mistake on one. I remembered at one point there was a tree in the middle of the path, a cliff to the left, a boulder on the right, and about an 18" opening in between. You basically have to turn and go sideways through it. What I forgot was two steps ahead is a 120 degree turn right, then two steps later a 90 degree turn left followed by a steep downhill staircase. I was able to maintain some footing through the two sharp turns, but I was really off balance when I got to the stairs and almost did a tailbone flop. I adjusted mid air and kinda did a pointed toed squat and got out of there with only an increased heart rate.

Mile 4 - 8:50

Mile 5 - 8:32

The beginning of mile 4 is a three part uphill stair case that is pointless to try to run. You continue to climb afterwards, but you can at least shuffle your feet some. That's followed by the steepest non staircase drop out of the woods. You're welcomed by 400 meters along a swampy lake with zero escape of the sun. This is also your last 'break' before the climb back up to the start. My quads are destroyed and I know what's coming, but I know if I am going to make any time on this stretch I must do it now. There are some rolling hills and a couple of short stair cases and I know I made it through there better than last year. Then I was reminded about how this thing ends. I thought I was better prepared this year, but there really is no preparing for this thing. First is a 1/4 mile climb that is just flat enough to run the whole thing, but are sure to completely demolish your hams. You get about a 2 minute break of soft rollers before the 200' monster completely out in the sun with near knee high grass. It's awful. I ran more of it this year than last year, but I don't think much. Good news, once you get to the top it's steady downhill back to the start line so this is a good opportunity to get your bearings back.

Mile 6 - 7:52

Mile 7 - 7:46

Mile 8 - 8:17

Mile 9 - 9:02

I came through the start line again, saw my time (44:something) and was initially a little disappointed because I thought I ran that a lot better than last year and not just less than a minute. Then it hit me, just as I started the half mile opening loop again...these ####ers didn't adjust the course! They added a half mile, but didn't offset it anywhere. Alright, it's go time. Let's break 1:30. However, I quickly realized that was going to be a tall order. The first time through the roller coaster I only did one extended walk before the two big climbs with 3 or 4 shorter ones mixed in when a shorter hill killed my pace. I had already done three walks before getting even a mile back into the woods. This was going to take a lot of mental toughness and careful use of energy because my leg muscles are dry. I knew when the hills were coming, so I tried building momentum prior to get me up them without walking, but was only mildly successful as my splits show. I got passed by a couple of people and as it turns out this actually helped as I had somebody to pull me along through this part, even though this is my stronger part of the course. I thought we all took it real easy on the climb out of the woods and that is supported by that last split. I think we all knew how this thing ended and didn't want that part of the race to be our undoing. I emerged from the woods ahead of one and on the heels of the other and given where I was mentally 20 minutes ago I call that a win.

Mile 10 - 8:36

Mile 11 - 8:50

Good news, bad news. The energy conservation worked as my times were nearly identical to round one. However, I lost touch with both of them. As I eluded to earlier, my hams were fried. I had just enough to get up part one of the climb, but had nothing left for the monster and knew it before getting there so I took off and spent all of my energy in that break before the climb. I got within a couple of strides of one of the guys, but as he was able to run up most of the hill and I punted the whole thing that was all she wrote. By the time I got to the top they had a good 100 m on me, but knowing it was an easy half mile to the finish and there's a fighters chance at 1:30 I took off. Very happy with the way I finished and my overall plan of attack, but the 1:30 goal fell short - 1:31:05 official, 16th place, 4th in age group. The latter two both better than last year. A lot actually. After I chugged about 40 oz of water and mowed down a power bar my legs emerged out of the danger zone and I started doing some math. They added a mile to the course this year and...I was only 2 1/2 minutes slower than last year...sooo... :pickle: .

I was excited about this race 10 days ago, but while I have been quiet about it in a 5 day span I strained my neck, developed a bruise on the roof of my left foot, my back has tightened up, and I have some mild tendinitis in both of my heels. I was quietly concerned going into this thing and while my legs are totally cooked right now I am ####### floating. Enjoy your Sunday. I know I will...

Patriot Dash 5K yesterday in a downpour. The course was essentially a down-and-back course. The first half-mile was almost entirely downhill. Then a mile up an ever-so-gradual incline. Turn around and a mile back the gradual decline, then the last half-mile uphill (MapMyRun has it at approximately a 100 feet elevation incline).

Started out great, aided by the first 1/2 mile being downhill....first split 07:59.

The second mile was split between running directly into the rain, which sucked, but turning around and having the rain at your back for the second part, plus the downhill slant was refreshing. Second split: 08:24.

The third mile was the rest of the downhill slant, then the ####### piece of #### sonuva***** hill. Because this was a local course, I was familiar with the hill and prepared myself for it. I backed off slightly and 2-3 people passed me in the 1/4 mile before the hill. Once we hit the hill and began our climb, I had more left in the tank. I passed those folks, plus a few more. At the three mile mark, it was a flat sprint for the last .1....Last split: 09:03. Last 0.15 @ a 07:46.

The organizers are apparently having an issue with the official scoring system and have yet to post the results. I stopped my app too long after having crossed the line to know exactly how I did. As I was approaching the finish line, though, the clock read 26:35 (I think...I was concentrating more on not dying). Post board at the end of the race had me 48 out of 115.

On a related note, my wife stopped her app and thinks she recorded a 29:13 (but she thinks the official time will be faster), which was a personal best for her!

We have a long time off until 8/23, when we're doing our first mud run.

Great read MAC.

Is this on the Burning River course?

Is this on the Burning River course?
It is! Not sure exactly where but i think in the mile 70 range. Hoping to do the relay next year but one of my best friends plans to be pregnant and we agreed to do this for the first time together so that may wait til '17.

juxt - Nice week! What happened to peaking at 70?

MAC - great job on the course PR (that's obviously a PR with the new mileage added)!

CCC - So you're a fan off hills, eh? Good work managing the course! Congrats to your wife on her PR!!

A weekly mileage PR for me last week. Feeling confident, but also looking forward to a break. This is a lot of damn work.

I like the decimals, Juxt.

Mon AM: 6.01 recovery @ 8:54/132. Felt great.

Mon AM: 5.05 recovery @ 9:18/137. Felt like crap. I just don't care for PM running.

Tue AM: 10.02 GA @ 7:27/153. I felt so strong and got carried away. Should've slowed this down, but damn that was fun.

Tue PM: 4.00 recovery @ 9:12/131. The treadmill is like cheating.

Wed: 14.33 MLR @ 8:14/144. Ugh, my legs were beat. Thrilled I got this in.

Thu: 6.07 recovery @ 8:52/136. Strange run. Had a DT massage Wed night with the UD Athletics MT - worked on my hips a lot which left me really sore, but fast.

Fri: 11.10 MLR @ 8:04/145. Could still feel the hips, but felt good.

Sat: 20.11 LR @ 8:15/145. I ran up through town which has some good hills at the halfway point. I paid the price for the hills - body threw out the anchor after mile 18.

Sun: 5.00 recovery @ 9:24/38. Between the all day 3D archery shoot, a meatball sub an hr before, and the hilly wooded paths (can't really call them trails), I didn't feel so good. :X Legs were fine at least.

81.69mi for the week.

Heading down to the beach house on Friday for a week, so I'll do a few workouts this week and then scale things back for a recovery week. Hoping to jump into a 5K on Sunday. :excited:

Nice races CCC and MAC. Impressive training weeks Juxt and Ned.

Ned I didn't realize how much volume you put in during June, 313 miles in nuts considering your last 200 mile month was in Nov. I am jealous in that I have never broken 300 or had an 80 mile week, but you must be tired with that volume and the heat. Enjoy the recovery week you deserve it.

Yes I signed up for Strava.

Is this on the Burning River course?
It is! Not sure exactly where but i think in the mile 70 range. Hoping to do the relay next year but one of my best friends plans to be pregnant and we agreed to do this for the first time together so that may wait til '17.
Your read sound very similar to a couple of race reports I had read about BR. The swamp, steps, and hills stood out.

juxt - Nice week! What happened to peaking at 70?
I ended up running all seven days. I took off Friday and Saturday before my race last Sunday so I didn't feel like I needed another day off so soon. However, now I'm thinking about running every day in July which will certainly up the mileage. I'm really liking my switch to morning running and my body seems to be getting used to it. I'm not doing two-a-days, however!!

Nice job CCC!

As for me, been struggling with some stomach issues for the last week. Had to cut short a run on Wednesday, and woke up puking early Sunday morning, so had to scrap my planned 11 mile run. Not feeling good at all right now. Not sure what's going on. 14 weeks out from the marathon, and getting a little nervous about readiness.

The runs I have done have been good though, other than my HR being a little high. Attributing that to heat and humidity though. Had a nice 6 mile pace run Saturday: 8:58 pace with a 165HR.

:hifive: I hate that Strava adds in the cycling mileage - My June running total was 281. I'm thrilled to come out of that hot month stronger than going in; I was definitely worried at times. These next two months are going to be huge. :oldunsure:

 I don't know how you guys do this in the afternoons. I hate it.

Ugh, that sucks. But 14 weeks is still a lot of time, so don't panic. Yes, this heat/humidity is going to make your HR go up more than you'd like. It'll make you that much stronger once we hit the fall, though.

That's a solid HR for a MP run.

MAC - great job on the course PR (that's obviously a PR with the new mileage added)!

CCC - So you're a fan off hills, eh? Good work managing the course! Congrats to your wife on her PR!!
I despise hills, but I'm getting better at them and tang a better approach. When I first began running, I took the approach that the faster you ran up the hill the faster it was over. I was killing myself and running out of steam. I've since found that dialing it back a little on my approach to the hill, keeping a steady pace up the hill, then pushing myself about 3/4 of the way up and finishing the hill strong suits me best.

That's some awesome training, Juxt and Ned! I'm quite curious about the miles I can, and will, put in this fall and beyond when I'm on my new faculty schedule (and hey, where's IK?).

Just settling into the vacation with a good routine of running one morning and swimming the next. Swam about 30 minutes today with the lake entirely to myself. Love it. Amazing how quickly the muscle memory takes over.
