#### me, it's unbearable out there.

I should probably focus more on quantity right now anyway, but that tempo run got audibled before I even got 2 blocks away.
Yeah, we got it again today. Getting real old. SI is gonna be about 150 tonight when I have to run 8 miles. And no break for the next week.

The forecast for my 20 miler Sunday morning at 6am? 142SI.

This game cheats.
When is your race?
October 11th. Right around the corner.
Wow, almost taper time. What's the average temp for race day? Hopefully you get a couple cool days in September to give you an idea of what kind of race you can expect.
Yeah, I'm close. I have a 20 miler scheduled for this weekend, a 12 miler next weekend, a 20 miler the following, and then the taper. I may try and push the mileage a bit and try to hit something like 22 for one of those two 20 milers.

My wife's boss has run a LOT of marathons, and his advice is to try and run a bit over the 20 mile threshold if you can. Agree or disagree?
Unnecessary for your first full, unless you want the confidence boost.
Not only is unnecessary but if it takes well over 3 hours to complete it could be dangerous. 20 is plenty long for your first marathon.
Curious, what do you see as "dangerous" about it? For me I almost don't consider it a "long run" unless it is over 3 hours. Of course if I was faster and ran on roads and could knock out a 20 miler in 2 1/2 hours then I'd probably see things differently.

Now you can reach a point of diminishing returns from a physiological perspective, where training longer isn't really providing any additional adaptive benefits while increasing the chance for injury or prolonged recovery (impacting future workouts). But there can be a mental boost from going for a longer period of time, which can be pretty big for people attempting a new distance.
Yeah, I was kind of wondering about the 3 hour thing myself. I can't NOT run 20 miles in less than three hours at the paces I'm running on my long runs. As a matter of fact, if I run it like I've been running my long runs, I'm out there 3.5 hours.

Ned and pbm - what does the extended forecast say about conditions for your races on the 13th? Mine has a low of 54 and a daily high of 74 so the race should be OK. (Assuming that holds, of course.)
I hate your guts. YOU MADE ME LOOK!!!!!!!

Where are you getting data for the 13th? On weatherunderground they're only going out to the 12th, which shows a low of 57 and showers. If it's 57 and cloudy on the 13th, I'll consider it a win.

weather.com and accuweather, I think

Hey Guys. I am back from my trip to St. Louis to bury my Mom. I only got one miserable two-mile run in the entire trip, after which I had a very slight twinge in my calf. I didn't really have any other opportunities to run, but it probably is just as well so I don't blow the calf up completely. I might run tomorrow and almost certainly will get back out Saturday. On Saturday evening I get the thrill of calling the McNeese State game at LSU.

:lmao: this is why I didn't want to look.

accuweather says 52 and mostly cloudy for Sunday AM. BRB, getting my jergins and kleenex.

Dude. So hot outside. I like to punish myself for getting so far, so I just did 2.1 miles during a late lunch. 74 dewpoint. 94 degrees. Fun times.

Ran a different direction so threw my pace all out of whack, ran the first mile way too hard, so I paid on the uphill on the way back.

P.S. I know I am probably not supposed to post in here because I am not a 10K guy yet, but bear with me. I'll be there in 6 months.

I just saw your strava update - 168 is insane! Be careful out there! :hifive:

And get that PS outta here - if you're running 100m you're A-OK for this thread.

No worries! I think it stopped being a 10k thread by the end of the original thread's first page.

I run with a 20oz bottle with nuun tablets. This time I carried a second bottle in a cinch backpack. HR was up there, but I run at a pretty slow pace still. 290lbs, so I think I'm kicking ### for a fat guy.

168 - oof. I've done a few of those and weighed before and after. I lose about 1.2lbs/mile on those kind of runs.

My wife loves the laundry I bring in.

I just use Mr. Sweaty. My sofa out back where I strip down after a run.

Love the batman wristbands.

I run with my daughter's Dora the Explorer water bottle once in awhile after she told me to use it so I will think about her when I run.

I can vividly smell and taste those trails, duck... dammit- I miss the bay area sometimes. Love reading your race report.
Thanks. Do you ever come back to visit Marin? If so we'll have to hit up some Mt. Tam trails and get a beer afterward at Iron Springs or Marin Brewing.

That's assuming I ever run again, of course. Damn that race took a lot out of me. People talk about 50Ks "running like a 50 miler", but I didn't really understand what that meant until this week. I absolutely feel beat up like I ran a 50M. Sunday and Monday nights were horrible sleep because every time I moved it hurt so much I woke up. DOMS Day on Tuesday was just brutal, and a painful left big toe has kept me from even walking around much to help work out all the crap from my legs. I was finally able to do that yesterday and walked around town for 25 minutes or so, but I experienced the herky-jerky quad movements that I've only had before after really long stuff - it almost feels like my quads lock up and then start to give out every few minutes, especially stepping off a curb. It's weird and I think I sometimes look like I have a neurological disorder!

It's continuing to improve today and the toe is starting to feel better, but it'll be another couple of days before I hit the trails again, I'm sure.

This thread started long ago by a dude (who was that anyway) who was striving to run a 10k. We welcome you into our strange club with open arms. Watch out for Annyong and chicken.

Short report: Super hard ride tonight. Set new power PR at 820w for 15 seconds. And I still got smoked. I'm just not a sprinter. :kicksrock:

They know I have to go early to get them, so they line up on my wheel and just wait until I lose patience and hit it - 500w until I bust. :D

I'm supposed to do a west coast business swing in not too long. If I end up in SF last I need a guide to run one of these things...

If I'm in town, consider yourself guided! Or sherpa'd, if we hit some real hills.

No, I'll just carry your stuff. Technically that's called muling in ultra-speak.

Just signed up for an HM trail race next weekend with a friend. I've never run on trails before so looking forward to it but no idea what to expect. The course is supposedly pretty flat and "runnable". Not too concerned with how I finish, looking at it as a traing run for the 10/25 HM.

Another crappy week mileage-wise interrupted by an afib bout, this one started Tues morning and lasted 24 hrs and included me getting up out of bed to piss in the middle of the night, getting dizzy and hitting the deck hard on the bathroom floor. Kind of scary but I'm fine other than a sore neck.

One final final question about the GPS Watches. I've seen mention in a few articles and videos that to get good HR readings from an optical HRM watch you have to wear the watch pretty tight. I hate wearing watches because I hate having it on my wrist when typing at the computer. I can barely tolerate my loose regular watch which I usually only wear outside the house. Is this true? I've been leaning towards the Vivoactive because I can wear it loose, but I also really like the TomTom Multisport Cardio (especially the aesthetics)

I do have to wear it tight, but for me it's not distractingly tight. If that makes sense.

Any advice for me for my debut at the one-mile race distance Monday? Just start fast and try to hold it (I think that's my plan)? By the way, rumor has it that our favorite little pony is joining me for this race so wish him luck.

Yeah, I hear you, I guess tight is a subjective thing. I just have to go test it.

Man, the mile is such a different discipline than what we do! What time are you hoping for? I'm super jealous, btw...

A marathoner isn't going to have the final 200m kick that a trained miler is going to have, so I'd think you'd be better off going out faster and holding on. Otherwise, you'd be playing right into a miler's game and likely getting out kicked. Play to your strengths (endurance)... :2cents:

Would love to hear SteveC's thoughts on the subject.

I'd be disappointed if I came in over 5:30. I would like to be under 5:20 but that's probably too fast. I think I was a better miler earlier this year when I was in 5K training. There's a little elevation the last quarter mile so I don't think I'll have a kick in me (although I probably wouldn't regardless of elevation). And, honestly, my "kick" isn't all that much faster anyway!

This is something I would like to do sometime, maybe in the spring. You should definitely be under 5:30. I am guessing you aren't racing anyone in particular in this race so I wouldn't overthink it, just go. The lung burn will be intense but you will fade less than others because of your endurance.

WTF am I, chopped liver? ####!

jk - Juxt will smoke me in this. I have no aspirations of winning my AG nor am I that concerned that a girl might beat me. I'm also puzzled at how fast to go out. Been a long long time since I did a balls out mile without worrying about how I'm feeling at the completion of that mile. Looking forward to the challenge. Being miserable for 6 minutes doesn't seem that bad.

Since Brony mentioned age groups, I'll mention this will be my last race in the 40-44 group with my birthday on Tuesday. An easier AG is probably the only good thing about turning 45. Brony, you're already 45, right?

yep, but I think the age group for sophisticated older gentlemen is 40-49 in this race. It's on like Pong between you and I.

Yeah, I'm thinking warm up well and GO!

It's been a while since I've felt the "I really don't want to be out here right now" feeling but around mile 65-70 this morning I was sucking and holding on for dear life.

Got home, checked the weather and it's already 93 degrees with 77 dew point. :X

So I guess it's good to have done it but I'll be taking tomorrow off. (it's boat day anyway)

Same advice I'd give you for skiing the K-12.
This deserves about a bazillion likes. Sadly I have only one to add to the cause.
I love that I knew exactly what that was going to be before I even clicked on the link. Such a great movie.

New AG - yes! Although as I recall, 45-49 isn't that much easier than 40-44. Wait another five years, though. The brackets then really start to thin with each change, as I'll experience in less than a month. Now I just gotta get healthy enough to do something about it ...

Banner day today.

Went and picked up a Garmin Vivoactive. Concerned about screen brightness. I hope I can read it in bright sunlight.

Got a resistance bike trainer that I ordered because I get rained out of so many long bike rides after work.

Set your laps to quarters and if you see anything higher than 80 seconds stop being such a ##### and run harder.

First run tonight in the rain just to test the new Vivoactive. I love having the data right there and I can put the phone away and not look at it. I still need to tweak some settings. My 30-minute run at 144 avg. HR was 533 calories per Strava and only 342 on Garmin. I'll go with Garmin, since it will make me work harder.

I made a conscious effort to keep pace through the short run. I was only 1 second off on my splits.

It's amazing outdoors, brighter the better. Download the Big Face watch. It's by far the best.
