Chiefs, what is the plan???
Thinking about that right now as I sit in the car on the way to Chicago. Just chomped down a big helping of pasta salad that I brought from home.My runs for the last two weeks have been at the 9:45 pace with a HR around 149. My scaled back expectations has my head somewhere at the 9:30 pace and see how I feel about half way through. HR should be in the upper 150's I think. If I want to push the HR in the 160s I am probably in the 9:00 pace range or even a little faster based on my current fitness. Just don't think I can hold that for 26 miles.

And thanks to all for the well wishes.

Good luck Steve and Duck, and I hope to see juxt tomorrow. Should be a fun weekend. Getting the pre race antsy feeling, which tells me my nutrition has been good this week. Feel like my body is ready to get shot out of a gun, which is usually a good sign for me.

Edit to add: bib number is 2739 if anyone wants to follow the awesomeness....errrr.....get a good laugh on Sunday.

So the plan is to run by heart rate monitor? What was your max again? I think 80-85% of max average wouldn't be overly aggressive but it is your first, so I understand the decision to err on the side of caution.

Good luck runners!

On Sunday AM, I'll be running http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/

I've only been running 8 weeks since my ankle injury put me on the shelf for several months. Hoping to break 4 hours. I may go after my previously slowest marathon (3:47) if I feel energetic on race morning.

No tracking so I'll report back on Sunday night.

Actually, no. My plan is to run by pace and just check and see where my HR is once in awhile. Just gonna try and keep my watch between 9:15 and 9:30 and see how I feel. Just wanted to let you know about where I expect my HR to be at those paces. My max is 195, but if it seems like when I go overly aggressive I just burn out quickly. Gonna do what I used to do before I ever bought a HR monitor: run my race, not think too much, and just check once in awhile to make sure I'm not blowing up.

I like that plan.

Duck didn't realize you were friends with cav. We were talking about your trip to Chicago. Seems he's a little fuzzy about the details, interesting taper week ;-)

It's amazing that a race Steve will be unhappy with is still an incredible effort in my eyes.

Keep your head up, Steve! More shots to come...

Great first 50k. Then the wheels came off. Thought about dropping at Mile 34, but pulled it together and grunted it out. Not too pleased with my time, around 11:39 or so, but happy to avoid my first DNF.

30 minutes spent with Medical while puking and cramping after the finish was not what I had in mind.

Up and at em. Enjoying a lovely breakfast before heading downtown in awhile. Actually slept pretty solid for 6 hours last night. Had a dream I was running a marathon but there were challenges about every couple miles. For example, one of them I had to catch 3 fish and identify the species. The other I had to walk a Bassett hound from a bar to a gas station and pick up the original recipe of the local bourbon.

Anyway, thanks to Chicago traffic (and a wife who apparently doesn't give two craps about my schedule the day before my first marathon), we missed juxt at the expo. Missed him by maybe 10 minutes.

Weather looks good - mid 50's throughout the race and warming up to 77 by mid afternoon. Should be beautiful. Can't wait to see Chicago this morning.

still beastly!

especially for signing up at the last minute.

Who runs with their dog?

We're discussing whether to get a Australian Shephard / Beagle mix as the local rescue just had a litter of 9 puppies they found near the local airport, cute as anything and my wife is already sold on getting one. http://www.adoptapet.com/pet/14023151-yardley-pennsylvania-beagle-mix

I think I'd prefer a golden or lab mix but the Aussies do seem like great dogs. we know we like beagles. But our last one wasn't much of a runner (she was 7 when we adopted her)

Nice work Steve & Duck! A disappointing race for one of you guys is a lifetime dream for the rest of us.

Had my toughest workout of my training cycle this morning and I'm pretty pleased with the result. Ran 17 miles with 14 at marathon pace. I averaged 7:05 (183). My heart rate was elevated early in the workout (probably because of lack of sleep), so that explains the high numbers but I had good legs for the most part. That's the part I'm most pleased with, as I finished up a 68 mile week today. I'm starting to think that I may be able to hold 7:15ish for 26 on fresh legs and with good weather. We'll see in a month I guess.

Now, it's time to pull up a chair and wait for these results to pour in.

Chief picked up the pace and is the 15k mark at 1:30:26, 4:14:22 pace.

Juxt also picked up the pace and is at 25k at 1:45:03, 2:57:18 pace.

Chief at the 25K at 2:30:35, 4:14:09 pace.

Juxt should have passed the 40K mark by now, I hoping it just didn't register.

Juxt finished at 2:58:20, awesome job congrats. Damn you 40K timing mat for making me worry.
Ha...I was hitting refresh and thinking the same thing. I was worried for disaster when it was creeping up on 11:30 eastern and I hadn't seen that split.

Looks like things are starting to get hard for Chief, at 35K at 3:36:33 4:21:04 pace.
I envy Chief right now. He's experiencing his first "last 10K" which isn't necessarily fun, but it's certainly one of those life experiences you'll always remember.
Oh yes, I remember mine...I was thinking, this is probably at the point of the race when people keel over and die but I'll be damned if I'm going to stop now.

Marathons are a muther ####er though. A local guy I know ran Chicago today and he was at 1:33 halfway through and ended up running a 3:31. :hangover:
