Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

Got 5 in this morning. Was planning on going to the gym but noticed it was a balmy 35 degrees at 5am.
I was happy with the 35 temp until I went outside... I did my first mile into the wind with freezing rain pelting my face. It was the most painful weather day for me.

The Fenix 3 HR...

...Of course I'm not that happy with the watch right now as the HRM just isn't working.  Today, no data at all despite being on (I could even see the green light).  Other days it's just way off.  I've tried moving it around, even trimmed my arm hair underneath it, but it just isn't reliable at all.  Good thing I'm not doing HR-based training right now or I'd be really frustrated.
Agh.  Frustrating to read this, as that's what I've read has been a major issue with the F3.  Was hoping upgrade from my F2 (w chest strap) to F3 (optical) when the F5 is released this quarter and the F3 price presumably drops, but I'm not going to do that with all the negatives about the optical HR reliability on the F3.

That sucks though, because I'm not sure I can stomach the $599 price point on the Fenix 5.   :kicksrock:

Probably true but I've been on a MAF kick and so far it's doing alright.

Today's 6.2 brings me to 251.6 for January, just over 36 hours  (so, roughly 7mph).

After listening to the podcast with Dr Breus, I've avoided coffee until after I run.  It really does affect the heart rate,  I'm running the same effort but roughly 7bpm lower.  I do feel a little more sluggish on the run but better later, so I'll keep this going except when I get back into speedwork (probably in late March).

I did sign up for the 12 hour race, but I give myself permission to call it early.
I was happy I read it yesterday.  We've had frigid temp's, but we haven't had snow this year like we've had the last 48 hours.  It helped me develop a strategy for the week.  I'm not going to have a standard week of workouts, but sometimes that's a good thing, especially when you aren't training for a particular race like I am right now.  Or prepping for a @SFBayDuck-like all day and night event.

Btw, you'll be fine.  A buddy of mine has done three 100K's over the last 18 months.  He's never ran more than 900 miles in a given year.  You will probably go out faster than you should and it won't be a pretty last couple/few hours, but since it's just a one mile loop on repeat you will have constant opportunities to adjust without being stuck out in no man's land.  Just have fun

    Pretty sure this wouldn't be pretty no matter what.

I'm going to try to convince my wife to join me, at least our 8yo for part of the event.  Might have to check whether they let family members join in.

This is how I measure my fitness levels by generating a progress summary report by month using garmin connect, but I hate how garmin spits out speed in mph instead min/mile so I have my spreadsheet.

I ended up with

Jan 17   253 miles 139  8:14

Compared to 2 months out from my other Marathons:

Sept 15  269 miles 140 8:03  (2:59 marathon)

Feb 15   264 miles 140 8:25  (3:07 marathon)

Sep 13   202 miles 143 8:25  (3:08 marathon)

Sep 12   211 miles 146 8:33  (3:14 marathon)
What were you last winter before Broad St.?  You were in great shape then.

Yeah, it's a bummer.  It happened again today - did hill repeats and looking at it afterward it has my HR in the 70s and 80s the whole time.  And I'm not @Juxtatarot, so I know that's not accurate. ;)

I've been meaning to reach out to garmin support and see if there's anything I/they can do about it, but as I'm not HR training right now it just hasn't been a high priority on the to-do list.  But I would like to have the data to look at trends over time, so it's frustrating.

Those of you that do have other wrist HR devices, I don't hear many complaints so they must work pretty well?

i'm finding that i get the most enjoyment out of adverse weather conditions when running (except excessive wind).  maybe it's the break in routine

ran 4 1/2 in a pretty fast paced snowfall last night. it just feels more satisfying somehow.

I knew I was in better shape than last January, and the milder winter has helped, but this was unexpected

Jan 16 - 133.1 miles, 19 hrs 10 mins (8:40)

Jan 17 - 139.6 miles, 18 hrs 12 mins (7:50)

holy ####, i read that as if you ran 272.7 miles total on Jan 16 & 17

Can't wait to see how he does at Barkley.

I wouldn't put anything past him, but it so doesn't suit his strengths.  He has always fared better at races on "runnable" terrain, and that sure doesn't describe Barkley.  Plus, first timers are at a big disadvantage from a navigation standpoint.  But I think it's great that Laz let him in.

I haven't seen the whole list for this year, but I'd bet on either Jamil Coury or Gary Robbins becoming the 18th finisher, and could see both of them getting it done.

love this site.  just got my next pair of running shoes at a nice discount. my normal replacement cycle always seems to sync up with "the new version just got released/we sold out of last year's..everything is full price".  no matter where i look for them.

decided to search a few months in advance of when i normally buy. boom!

Anyone have the new Brooks Ghosts? That's what I'm eyeballing
I bought a pair last year. I have used Mizuno Wave Riders since I started running 4 years ago, but wanted to try something new. I usually get fitted at my local running store, and those two brands were real close to me in terms of feel.

After a month of road work with them, I went back to my Mizunos. The Brooks, for me anyway, seemed like my foot was real loose in them and I felt my stride was all over the place. But I still run in them once in a while for shorter runs just so I don't waste them. But that is just me. I know they are a pretty good shoe.

Ghosts seem like a nice starter shoe but I think there's many better options out there. Go to your local running store and try the comparable saucony's, hoka's, new balance, asics etc and I doubt you'll leave with the ghosts.  :2cents:

I am a big fan of the Ghost's, currently running in the 8s.  I tried the Saucony's over the summer but they made my Achilles sore.  Go to your local running store and see what works for you.

I switched from Asics Nimbus to Brooks Glycerin mostly because of how fast they wore out for me (as a fat###).  A lot of lateral stretching and felt like after a few months they were trashed.  My Books on the other hand feel a little tighter (awesome) and even the first pair I've had since early Fall are still good to go with many races on them (although they now live in my car and use them for walks  :bag: ).  I agree with others.  Go get fitted at a store.

So the goal for Western States is 175.  My recent off season (Less Running, More Pizza and Beer!) had me at about 205 the day after the WS lottery.  So I need to lose 30 lbs in 29 weeks, right about the pound a week that any expert would recommend.  I'm not planning on any drastic diets or anything, just working on eating clean, moderating carb consumption, and watching the booze.  Combined with the ramp up in training i know I can get to where I need to be.
195.4 this morning, down about 10 pounds from mid-December.  Twenty more to go by the 24th of June.

Timely excerpt from Jason Koop's book on the "minimum maximum" volume you need during peak training weeks for ultras.

@FUBAR, you'll be fine.

2,000 yard swim last night (4 x 500 w/30 second rest).  Longest swim workout in, maybe, 10 years?   Pace stayed steady (though not great) throughout.   :boxing:

Garmin vivo active. Anyone have any experience with these?
The only negatives are the dim screen (I have the original) and the low-ish battery life.  Other than these, its a perfect multi sport device.  The ability to pull down apps is awesome for different sports (I have an app for kayaking and paddle boarding).  I have found the GPS as active as my 310 & 910XT and actually think it does a better job of swim tracking than both as well.  Having been injured with three different things for over 2-years, its been great for tracking walks, elliptical, kayak, etc.  Plus it tracks steps and sleep way better than the fitbit I had.  I'd love to have the new one with the HR monitor built in, but the one I have works fine (and having 2 kids in college is a sucking drain on the wallet).

Obligatory drive-by in case you nuts haven't already wasted 4 pages of discussion on it: Patriots Day is worth the watch. Fantastic movie. I remember following along with you all that day and asking tons of questions that didn't have answers. This movie does a good job of filling some blanks.

Back to regularly scheduled running/swimming/biking/extreme sporting drivel...

My running doc wanted me to start doing daily runs, so I did back to back ~4 mile days on Tues and Wed.  Felt OK after Wed's run.  3 hours later, I'm at work just walking up 1 flight of stairs. *BINK*   Hammy pull in my right leg in the usual culprit spot.  Grrrrrr.  Wasn't major pull, but still very reminiscent of the same old probs at the same running durations.  very frustrating after a few weeks of optimism.

I am going on the record as saying I did not like it. I had a freaking anxiety attack and about 20 mins into the film I wanted to leave. We were in one of those theaters that serves drinks and food so I stuck it out for my wife. When we left my clothes were soaked through with sweat and I was a mess. I have purposely avoided 99% of news for several years. It just causes me to much anxiety. Watching this film reminded me why I dont watch news very often. Mentally I cant handle people being so mean to each other.

In case anyone is wondering I received 0 sympathy  from my wife that night.

I tried a trail run this morning. Going up was slow as I was trying to keep my HR 150-155. Coming down I had a hard time getting my HR to 150. To many rocks and obstacles to worry about to really let loose going down. I had fun though. It was a beautiful day out there.

Now is when your running doc earns his money! Hopefully you can get past this.

That sucks brony

Was all set to go 10 this morning and make it a 70 mile well but woke up at 1, then 2, then 330, then every half hour or so with nasty ####. Not diarrhea but bad stomach cramps and pure nastiness.  So it's a rest day, legs probably needed it anyway.  Feel better now so 15 tomorrow (I hope)

Body knows best. We get in trouble when we ignore what it's saying in order to hit arbitrary goals.  You're playing the long game, you've got a 100M to run this year!
