No but seriously, I think I told you guys that I was really enjoying just racing and not too terribly worried about times/prs...well that was kinda true but not really. The competitiveness is still there. I still have expectations going into all these races. Hell, I have expectations of myself just doing a workout.
Embrace your addiction!

Saywhaaaaat?!?
Yeah, forgot until yesterday morning that I had this trip booked.  Let's just say I'm less than stoked to sit on a plane for 7+ hours today (no direct flight) after this weekend.  I don't get in until late tonight, but will be staying at the Embassy Suites downtown tomorrow night before flying out late Thursday morning.  I was originally planning on exploring for a place to run on Thursday....but that plan has changed and I won't be packing the gear to force myself to take a couple of days off.

Next time you damn well best pack your gear and I'll show you some less than inspiring local trails!   :lmao:

Well enjoy your running time off, and apologies in advance for the crap weather we've had going on for the past few weeks.

I've had good runs almost everywhere I've been, as long as I can get my feet on some dirt.  So I absolutely hope to get out there with you one of these trips!

Don't know if you're around downtown tomorrow late afternoon/evening, but if so PM me and we can grab a beer or something.

Doh!  I live 5 minutes from downtown so I'll see what I can swing.  Can't imagine worse timing though as I was out on business travel last week, holiday Monday, race weekend Friday to Monday upcoming weekend, followed by another business trip next week.  Much to do, little time.  If we don't hook up, then throw a couple back for me.   :banned:

No worries, I get it!  Hit me up if you're available, I'll be sitting somewhere downtown having a cold one.

I am sure this is buried somewhere in this thread, so apologies for being new (I checked for injury links in first post!). Anyway, I think I am dealing with plantar fasciitis. Each day when I wake up I can barely walk and it loosens out throughout the day.  Just started a little over a week ago and I ran through it my first couple runs, but didnt even attempt to run this weekend until this morning because of it and the pain was just too sharp.  Ive now walked around some and its loosening up just like it has previous days but its really bothersome and Im walking with a noticeable limp.  I have a compression ankle brace I bought, so hopefully that will help and I have done some googling as to other things to do to try to help it, but does anyone here have a cure that they swear by?
May just be a case of too much, too fast, too soon.  Which is very common.  Some figure out and adjust rather quickly.  Others (i.e. me) take years of errors and different approaches when all they needed to do was rest more and slow down.

:hey:   yep, very much so here too.  I've ran since high school, although not always training for anything other than being forced to stay in shape and enjoying getting out there.  I know it's been discussed almost too much but really, MAF / zone 2 / easy effort training is the way to go - at least to build the base.

I was thinking about everyone in here as I battled cottage cheese dancing around in my stomach the last mile or so yesterday.  I didn't need to resort to the waddle, but I couldn't have been more than a mile from needing to do the same.

carne asada lunch for me

had kinda forgotten about it when the running urge hit me.  tried to squeeze in a few miles after work but before the kids got home.

knew i was in trouble about 2 miles in. had to give up the ghost around mile 4 and hold on for dear life.

And this is why I run in the morning after a small cup of covfefe with toast and peanut butter.

I guess I have been spared here for the most part.  Made the mistake once of running after eating lasagna an hour earlier.  That hurt bad.  Like bricks rolling around.

until about 4 months ago i had run in the morning for several years. then one day i was feeling too tired to get up and ran after work instead,

i've struggled to get back in my morning routine ever since.

Finished 3rd in my trail race on Saturday, but it wasn't pretty.  Averaged almost 11:00/mile when I'd been hoping/planning for more like 9:30-10.  I finished 6 minutes behind the guy who took second and almost a half hour behind the woman who won.  It's a tough, hilly course, but I knew that going in.  I think it was the heat that got to me, along with the fact that there was really no breeze under the canopy of trees.

On Monday I did Memorial Day Murph at CrossFit.  One mile run, then 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 squats before doing another mile run.  I'm not strong enough (yet) to do the pull-ups unassisted, so I had to use bands.  It was still a hell of a workout.

Left leg (hamstring/piriformis/hip....probably all related) still giving me trouble, but I think it's getting better.  Hoping to get out for an easy hour or so tonight.  We'll see how it feels after work.

Waddled about 6 miles home this morning. I need a better route for situations like this. Was on my way to a decent run and it went south quick.

I came into this month without a goal, but I knew I was in a place in which I needed to start making them.  So that’s what I did in May – created some goals.  Some are soft, some are hard, and there are others in between.  But the picture is becoming clearer.

*Short term – the mile in 12 days, sub 5 is the goal – anything lower is just a bonus.

*Long(ish) term –I’d like to do something competitive around August 1 and the hat trick race I mentioned a while ago (5 mile-then 5K-2 mile) is still on my radar, but if something else better fits my schedule I’ll do that something else instead.  I’m looking for something in that timeframe because it’d be a nice midpoint in between the mile and…

*Long(er) term - A half this Fall.  That’s set in stone.  I’m going to hold off on deciding when and where, but probably earlier Fall vs. late Fall because…

*Ultimate goal - I want to reserve late Fall for base building for https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Toledo/GlassCityMarathon.  Since I refuse to utilize the dreadmill and Cleveland winters can be especially brutal I won’t sign up until at least February, but as long as winter is something closer to the last 2 and not the 2 prior then barring injury I’ll be there.

So that’s what I did in May.  Decided what I’m doing for the next 11 months.  I also notched 165 miles (most since marathon training in September) and 13 strength training sessions (most since I started tracking in 2014).  Weight has stayed steady around 180, but despite some consistently poor dietary decisions my body fat crept closer to 10 than 15 – something that hasn’t happened since 2011 when I was more committed to the weight room than pounding pavement.  I don’t expect that ratio to improve much between now and the end of the year, but if I can get to January in a similar spot so I can trim 10 pounds or so marathon training and maybe get that body fat percentage around (or below?) 10 then I think I’ll be in a good spot to try to BQ.

How are you measuring body fat?

It's all about that base, about that base.....Keep crushing those miles.  You're going to be set up so well for this Fall.

For me, still kind of a bummer missing that middle day of the Memorial Day Training Runs, but a solid month with 2nd highest mileage, 4th highest time on feet, and 5th highest amount of vert ever:

Distance    220.52
Time    44hr 43min
Elev Gain  29,226'

Today was second day off while on the road for biz, then flying back home tomorrow from MSP.  Knee is feeling not 100% but better, and while I'm itching already to get back out there I will probably take tomorrow off as I'm sure I'll be stiff after flying home all day.  Right now the plan is to head out Friday morning and test things out again, with the hope of being able to get in at least a somewhat solid (2 1/2 hours) effort this weekend, although I'd keep it flatter than usual.

Handheld + caliper. I have the strength and conditioning coach do it once per month so I don't cheat. They're usually within a percent of each other, but if they're not for whatever reason we do it again the next time I lift.

Booyah!  Tough 3 hour bike workout yesterday (technically 2:55).  Did continuous loops on the suburban trail ...total of 51 miles.  Speed wasn't great (just 17.25 mph), but I was fighting 17 mph winds with higher gusts, and more importantly, I held speed and gears (staying in the big ring) through all the laps - no fade at the end.  Two big highway overpasses on each loop, so had to deal with 14 of those plus the numerous twists and turns of the course.  My race course is generally flat and has just four total turns plus a turnaround.

Hopeful that this is a good precursor for race day.  Last year, of the six old farts in my AG, three were 20 mph guys and three were around 17 mph hour guys.  I'll be more in the latter than the former, given training and my mediocre bike.  Then again, only one was even close to a 9:00/mi pace on the run, so ideally I make it up there.

eta: I did add a short (600 yd) run to the end of the ride ...felt like I was running in cement, of course, but the pace was in the 8:30/mi range or so.  The big Q is whether I loosen up more as the miles accumulate or do a slow death.  The plan is for the former.

I just got a road bike this past weekend, Trek 1.2.  It's a pretty big upgrade over my 15 year old mountain bike.  Been loving it this week.  Seems like it upgrades me from ~12 mph on average to 14 or 15 on a typical ride.  I gotta get some more leg strength and I might consider a duathlon in the later summer or fall.

I have that same Trek 1.2.  Probably 10 years old now.  Been wanting to upgrade for years, but just can't justify it.   We'll be moving to a new part of town that has super easy access to a nice paved trail in a year or 2.  I'll be able to ride from the garage to the trail in less than a mile, just have to cross a one public road.

My apologies to anyone I missed but..

What are your thoughts on Boston 2019?

A. I definitely plan on trying to qualify and if I do, I'm in.

B. It depends on a variety of factors but I'm thinking about it.

C. Nope.
I have signed up for Philly this year and the plan is to run Boston 2019.  I wouldn't say I am a definite because there is a lot of time between now and then.

I plan to run Boston 2018. I have my marathon scheduled for July 29th in Washington (Jack and Jill Downhill). I am running to qualify; I am not running just to say I finished a marathon. I know everyone thinks it's not possible, but I/we will definitely find out. Good luck to everyone else attempting to qualify!

I think I'll try to qualify but I'm not sure I'd actually make the trip.  Bucket list for sure, so possibly, but it's an expense and time away from the fam (or bring them and it gets really pricey) that I'm not sure I want to do right now.  But it's almost 2 years away so we'll see.

So, you can qualify for Boston 19 when you run Boston 18!

Anybody read a study on older runners(50+) and the dangers of running a sub 8 minute mile pace.  My wife(physical therapist) had a patient that mentioned it to her.  And I wanted to try and read about it.

My primary running goal is Boston 2021 (new AG).  With this heel issue, I don't know how long I'll be hindered (e.g., not running on consecutive days).

Never heard anything like that before.  The root cause of the risk needs to be identified.  Is it the risk of an elevated HR?  But a sub-8 pace will tax some runners more than others, so an artificial standard for all individuals over a certain age doesn't make much sense to me.

I've never read anything so specific but there have been articles like this one that suggests that running in moderation might be better for you.  There seems to be a lot of questions and debate about those studies though.

I also know from internet ads that running an 8 minute mile can save me money on life insurance.

What do you other baldies do on long runs in the summer?  I hate wearing a hat but I hate cancer more.  I also don't like sunblock sweat in my eyes.

Shaved head checking in here.  Sunscreen.  Maybe its just me, but I've never had it sweat into my eyes ever while running.  It also seems to cool me down a little, although that could be psychosomatic.

Hats are terrible.
