Quick shoe post: really liking my brooks puregrits I use on trail and need another pair of road shoes - looking into the Brooks pure cadence6, any experience?

Will take my current topo athletics and Brooks in to fleet feet store to assess wear pattern and see if I should be in something different.

Thanks

@JShare87 - I'm getting excited about your race.  This is a pretty inspiring race report of a guy who ran your race... http://www.darelruns.com/races/2016/7/31/jack-jills-downhill-marathon-north-bend-wa

Are there any ways to track you?

In terms of diet, I've never heard of a diet of rice and oatmeal just prior to a race, but there may be some evidence that's what should be done for endurace races.  I generally eat lots of pasta and fish the 48 hours prior.

Most importantly, do NOT, I repeat do NOT, try anything new race day.  I don't care what they are selling at the expo that the sales person guarantees will make you faster.  Your marathon is not the time try something new.

Finally....about the socks, its personal preference.  Which sock do you prefer on long runs?  Whichever it is, use that.  Don't over think this too much.  You have run a boatload of training runs.  You know what you like and what you don't like.  Trust yourself.
Thanks! I have read that race report multiple times and follow the guy on Strava. As to your question about electrolytes, I've never added any to my water before.

Good luck @JShare87!!  Lots of great advice in here about not doing anything in the days before your race that you haven't done before, and don't overthink this to the level of "thin vs thick" socks.  Keep your mind as much at ease as you can.  You've trained your ### off so let er rip, and by all means if things happen to go south I highly recommend doing whatever you can to at least get a finish.  You'll be glad you did when it's all said and done.  The FBG community is behind you.

I will absolutely do this. I am going to enjoy the run if my body isn't feeling it.

Water is the only thing I drink, no matter what. As far as the rice thing, everything I've read is to carb load and don't upset the digestive system, doesn't rice check both of those boxes? Within the past 3 weeks, rice has made up about 1,500-2,000 calories a day. I plan to up that and eat as much as I can handle. I never heard of the electrolyte and water thing, but I did buy water with electrolytes in it. Plus I have those Gatorade electrolyte packets I can add to it. I have no clue what I'm doing. What I do know is that what I was doing during training probably isn't smart. I hate greasy food and threw a bunch of garbage in my body which I think led to me being sick.
Eating healthy is a great idea, but don't go crazy with new routines this close to the race.  My main advice: Your big carbo load meal is Thursday night.  That's the meal (along with the Friday breakfast) that will fuel you.  Otherwise, eat frequent and light throughout Friday.  The Friday night meal, IMO, has one goal: To assure a good poop prior to the race.

Glad you're feeling rested and ready!  That's critical for success.  And pick the socks you like, remembering they'll probably be absorbing a lot of sweat and spilled water during the race.

Thanks will check out - drop is right about where I am now.
I highly recommend.  You can get the v3 for $74.95 right now at Running Warehouse.  And that's before the readily available 15% discount.

Order a pair and try them on, and if you don't like them, you can ship them back for free.

Those elevation numbers are crazy.
Yeah, no kidding. The only downside for me is the back half of my training would be in summer, but it really only starts to get brutal here in July. Which would be my taper period anyway.

Anyone else get the invite to try the Garmin Connect BETA?  If you get the chance, turn it on.  Only a few hours in without a glitch AND the updated dashboard on the iPhone App is awesome compared to the current one.  If you try it and don't like it, it can be easily toggled off.

Nope, though how did you receive the invite?

I had a banner when I opened the app to add my mileage after spin class this morning.  I could click on the terms of service or just toggle it on.  Therewas also a message about contacting me for my feedback.  I am a bit worried it may be a huge battery drain on the iPhone battery as the dashboard shows real time HR, but I haven't noticed issues yet.

I looked up the weather up there for this weekend, and he's going to be running in air conditioning. At least compared to what he's been suffering through.
So looking forward to heading to Cleveland next Wednesday.  2 mornings of weather I can handle for running.  Going to make the most of it.

Good luck, @JShare87.  I know I've given you a hard time about your "unconventional" approach to this race, but I sincerely hope it all works out for you and that you make me eat crow.  Have a great race.

Do well, @JShare87!!!  Three mile tunnel at the start: Take it nice and comfortable through the tunnel and treat that as a simple warm-up as though the miles hardly even count.  When you pop out, your 23 mile run begins.  You know you can do 20 ...just add a 5K on top of that and your success will be complete!

What an awesome looking course.

Get after it, @JShare87!

Checking year to year progress and last year in July I averaged 8:20(155BPM) and this July Im averaging 8:05(153).  :pickle:
For a little more perspective in fall of 2015 I ran a 3:08 marathon...that July I averaged a 8:49(152). Yeah, I'm thinking anything less than sub 3 this fall will be disappointing.

No kidding. Had this conversation with the wife the other day after I had looked at this one online:

Me: I think I have an idea where my next marathon is going to be.

Her: You mean the one who aren't going to run?

Me:  <_<

Me: It's in Washington. It's around the mountains and looks pretty dang cool.

Her: You going by yourself or you want us all to go?

Me: I was thinking just me and you. Kind of a long weekend without the kids in a cool spot.

Her:  :)

Nice.  I ran 11 miles at 8:03/148 last night.  Hoping for 3:11 at Lakefront in October.

I'll join the pile-on and wish @JShare87 good luck! It's been fun to follow this journey and hope that this race works out great for you.   My advice is to wear a bright pink shirt, jump to the front of the corral and do the first quarter mile at a near sprint.  Just because.

Best of luck @JShare87 in no doubt the most intriguing marathon debut this thread has ever seen...relative unknown pops into thread and declares BQ aspirations, bunch of old farts roll eyes, new guy remains steadfast and pounds out hundreds of solid miles in swampy FL air, feels like crap for a few weeks but rediscovers his mojo, eats a #### load of rice and heads to the start line...I ####### love it!

And most important question he asks -- "What kind of socks should I wear?"

Epic.
