Ran a 10k - Official Thread (10 Viewers)

Yep. Today was important but tomorrow, about 2-3 hours before race (when you first get up, most likely), just go out for a 10 minute jog. Nothing more, nothing fast.
I went out and just walked for 10-15 mins before my training run this morning. I do feel like it helped. Certainly didn't hurt.

My boy Surf is off at the Javelina Hundred. Going to be around 90 degrees here in the Arizona desert, the 20,000 lbs of ice they have on hand might not be enough for the over 1000 runners doing the 100M and 100K!

The scene here is crazy, with most people camping out last night, beer tents, pizza ovens, and a DJ blasting dance music all day.

Race is 5 loops, so I get to just camp out here at Javelina Jeadquarters and try not too partake in too much of the festivities while waiting for him to come in every few hours. He’s hoping about 4 hours a loop for the first few (first loop is 23 miles, rest are 19) with a goal of breaking his 23:03 100 mile PR. I’ll pace him either loop 4 or 5, depending on how he’s doing. Hopefully not both, not sure I have 40 miles in my legs 4 weeks out from Grindstone!

live tracking here, he’s bib 463.

Good luck to everyone else racing this weekend!

That sounds awesome.  Have a great time and good luck to you and your dude.

Hitting the road in a few hours. Dinner with my folks at 530 near my hotel.

Bib 8942 - tracking here 8942. Also there is an app that might work different/better called ‘Marine Corp Marathon’.

Yesterday at work I was a little bored so I went back to the beginning of this thread - like the real original - and saw it talk about doing a 10k in under an hour with a few months training... I had already planned to go on a known out and back today that is 6.4 miles... I figured, why not see how close I could get.

I promise not to bore you with stories of every run I take but I'm doing at least one more... But I will spoiler it.

Lost my gps again at about 1.9 miles today, I assume it's something with my phone, but it's a known route so I knew were most of the marks are. I didn't note the time of most of them but that's ok. Strava says Mike one was done in about 9:30 something and .9 was done at a 9:16 pace. Shortly after mile two is what some of you would probably call a bump, for me right now it qualifies as a solid hill and it took a bit of a toll. Made it to the turn around and headed back. Still felt pretty good until I had about 1.5 miles to go... Then I noticed that if I didn't concentrate on taking deep slow breaths, I was gasping a bit.

overall finished with a time of 1:07 on a run all alone with no one to help pace/push - well, except the three big fluffy tail wagging dogs I pass at about the 2.5 and 3.5 ish marks who I'm sure we're chanting my name for me. So, not quite the hour but only like 3'weeks simce I started running after the ankle sprain. Going to think about setting some goals for runs in the new year. Really enjoying this journey so far...

He’s looking good so far!  Yeah Surf!

Youll have to let us know what you think of that race.  Sounds like a fun environment.

got up early today to run a local 5k (for the sweet long-sleeve sweat wicking shirt). i've run it a handful of times in the past. some people dress up, kids get to trick or treat + free tickets to an indoor trick or treat event

missed my exit on the highway, was cutting it close to make the cut for registration. pulled up to the spot 5 minutes before it closed................. except there weren't any runners around. or signs of a start/finish line..... or tables with water cups...... or anything  :oldunsure:

thought maybe they moved the start point and changed the direction of the route so everything was hidden from my view. re-checked my phone for the details annnnnnnnnnd the race was in a totally different part of town this year. that's what i get for assuming  :hot:

Do well!  Listen to your inner "coach" as you're out there to remain tuned in to where you're at physically and mentally and then to HTFU for the final miles.

Getting my #### together out there.  It’s slowly starting to feel like something I enjoy again.  Pretty sure I’ll be somewhat ready for my 10k next Saturday.

Three runs for me this week, so trending back in the right direction after only running a few times since Superior.  Getting pumped for the Western States registration/lottery in order to get on with planning for next year.

Going to offset a good week with some pizza on the pellet grill, beer, and maybe a bourbon or two with some good friends this evening.

Looks like Duck’s buddy is through mile 80 in 18:10.  Going to be a close one to beat his 23:03 PR.  Oil up your creaky legs and get him there Duck!

What were your splits like?
Two meatball pepperoni and banana pepper, two buffalo chicken bacon and onion, one sausage pepperoni and mushroom, one cheese, and a forecast of several trips to the can before hopefully long running sometime after our racers are done today.

He did it.  Duck did it!  Helped his buddy best his PR by 10 minutes.
Surf is a bad man. We started the loop needing 5:30 for sub-24, and he said that was fine. But a few miles out from the last aid station I made a comment about needing 11:00 miles for the last few to get sub-23, and let that linger in the air like a fart. He started running faster. And faster. We got there and I told him if we rolled through without stopping we could make it. We topped off our bottles and kept going.

As we rolled along I told him he could take a short walk break if he needed, and he said he probably would need to. He didn’t. Mile 95 on splits:  11:49, 11:16, 11:42, 10:55, 11:04, and mile 100 was 10:27.

Now, we sit here in the desert drinking beer. I think he deserves it.

@bushdocda 10K mark at 08:51 AM with a time of 00:55:14 and a pace of 08:34 min/mile.

Keep it up!

His first 5k was 9:15, so he picked it up after a slow start as expected. Next couple splits will tell a bit more.

That's a little slower than goal pace but I know there was congestion concern for the start.  I think we'll see the next split faster.
The live update site is awesome. It just showed him passing mile 7 and gives expected time to finish. Had him at 3:42. Considering the congested start and hopefully him planning on negative splitting, he's doing fine.

Yep, speeding up:

15K

01:21:30

26:15

08:28

Holding pretty steady at this point with his last split at 8:27 but his overall time is at 3:46 right now (8:36 pace).  Hoping he's running smart and is leaving some in the tank for a strong finish.  Either way, still looking really good.

I really like he way he is running this, he is setting himself up for a strong finish.

Thought of you guys at each timing mat - thanks for the support today and every day.  Got a great morning and made the best of it.  All the food and drink time!

Kudos to @JShare87 and @bushdocda for your awesome races!

My wife ran her 2nd-ever half marathon this morning. It was cold and rainy and overall pretty miserable, but she managed to break 2 hours (1:59:10, 9:06/mile) and set a 5-minute PR in the process!

Interrupting all the great racing with an update:

Saw my doc last week, and as expected, she didn't do much except refer me to an orthopedic doc, and I see that woman on Tuesday.

While at my university's cross country conference meet yesterday, I deliberately ran around a lot to get in about 2 miles.  The hope, actually, was to recreate the pain so I could be specific with the doc.  But no luck!  So today I went and ran 3 miles.  The run felt natural ...and no lingering pain several hours later.  Hmm.  I did happen to take a good look at the soles of my main, workhorse running shoes before heading out.  The outer part of the left heel (my pain has been left hip) was very worn.  :bag:   I haven't been paying attention, obviously.  I threw out those shoes as well as a handful of others that tend to accumulate in the basement.  Time to start fresh and pay more attention (I know, I know ...log the miles!).  Ill still see the doc on Tuesday, but maybe the issue isn't as severe as I thought.

eta: Looked up the new doc's bio: She has run the Chicago marathon herself, and has been an event physician at both Chicago and NY marathons and the Lake Placid Ironman.  ...encouraging that we'll be on the same page.
