Just don't dig yourself TOO deep of a hole that you end up falling short of your goal later. My GMP for Monumental was 6:40-6:45ish, and I ran the first 10K at 6:52 pace.Highly doubt I start out at anything close to 7 flat.

You would if you had my shoes....There isn't much weather conditions I hate more than 40, wind, and rain. I mentally built myself up to deal with it earlier this week. And I was all ready to give it hell. But the snow didn't melt in time. It's a water logged, flooded mess out there. So, dreadmill take 2 this week. I'd slog through it if it were an easy run, but not the bell curve.
How are these "holy grail" shoes of yours different from any other trail shoes? You would if you had my shoes....
And even if they are superhuman I am having science issues trying to figure out how they won't become heavy after running through at least a couple inches of water for a few minutes. How are these "holy grail" shoes of yours different from any other trail shoes?
Just pulled up their site and was comparing the ICE to the regular Peregrine trail shoe - the tread pattern is definitely different. The regular one is a more traditional trail shoe grip pattern while the Ice version has their "artic grip" tech that looks like it is more reliant on a "anti-slip" grippy rubber on the bottom rather than just a "cleat like" grip for trails/mud.How are these "holy grail" shoes of yours different from any other trail shoes?
My first pair of shoes were Pearl Izumi recommended by my triathlon friend (he was sponsored by them). Got a pair of road shoes and trail shoes. I loved the trail shoes and it was what I started out with. How are these "holy grail" shoes of yours different from any other trail shoes?
I have two main concerns. First, they're not available in widths, and I wear 2E in New Balance. Second, they're listed at 10.4 oz versus my NB road shoes at 7.3 oz. For the math-challenged, that's almost 50% heavier. My first pair of shoes were Pearl Izumi recommended by my triathlon friend (he was sponsored by them). Got a pair of road shoes and trail shoes. These are night and day from them. I don't know why. Now, I'm sure @Zasada and @SFBayDuck have quality trail shoes and maybe they aren't much different, but these are just so stable and grippy yet comfortable. And despite running through sloppy snow/ice, my socks remained dry too.
So far, anyone that has picked up a FlipBelt has loved it. Just saying.....
That guy has shorts on. Our hero's finish photo will not.
I noticed you've been killing it with your swim time.Swam over 11k this week. I think its a new record for me training wise.
Loving my Salomon Speedcross 4 -- just got the 5 but haven't run on them yet. They've got massive lugs on them for mud/dirt/snow/etc. I sometimes run trails with a friend who doesn't have these shoes, and he's often slipping when I have great stability. Now, I'm sure @Zasada and @SFBayDuck have quality trail shoes and maybe they aren't much different, but these are just so stable and grippy yet comfortable.
I love mine, even if Juan thinks it's a monstrosity. The zipper is great -- don't have to step into the thing or put it over my head.So far, anyone that has picked up a FlipBelt has loved it.

That said, these shoes are not so great on ice.
And I actively dislike running streets with them. The lugs are just too big for that.
I do need a pair of ice shoes. Not snow, not mud, not dirt. Just ice. Today I had to baby-step across many glare ice sections of sidewalk and it was frustrating.

Slow going. Im putting together a 80/20 (prolly more like 90/10) plan with coach for this year. The goal is injury free with increase in volume. Its prolly not far off of MAF type work. I have a little more to do to prep, but once I have all the data gathering togehter im planning on sharing my approach here. Justa little slow going at the moment.I noticed you've been killing it with your swim time.
How are you feeling coming back after the time off? Fitness coming back? Enjoying it? Any race plans on the horizon?
I'll most likely arrive Friday evening and leave Sunday late morning or early afternoon.@Zasada, @gruecd, @tri-man 47, @The Iguana, and @SteelCurtain......when are you guys planning on coming in and leaving? Is anyone planning on hanging out beyond Sunday afternoon? All are welcome but just need to look at switching up a shift (isn't a big deal and may do so anyway to recover).
Probably similar to last year. I imagine I'll come down with @tri-man 47 on Friday afternoon, and we'll get up and head back on Sunday morning.@Zasada, @gruecd, @tri-man 47, @The Iguana, and @SteelCurtain......when are you guys planning on coming in and leaving? No problem. I call dibs on leg #1 before it gets hot!Probably similar to last year. I imagine I'll come down with @tri-man 47 on Friday afternoon, and we'll get up and head back on Sunday morning.
PS: I call dibs on the "dog-free" bedroom in the basement.![]()
I'm good in the dog room. I spend plenty of time in the dog house, so I'm used to it.Probably similar to last year. I imagine I'll come down with @tri-man 47 on Friday afternoon, and we'll get up and head back on Sunday morning.

The team's loss. The warmer it gets, the slower I get.No problem. I call dibs on leg #1 before it gets hot!
Kind of depends on what everyone else does and/or what you have planned and/or if my wife decides to come or not. Right now, I think she is planning to stay home and do something with my daughters that weekend. Friday is my younger daughter's last day of high school - graduation isn't until the following weekend but I think they will probably do something the weekend of the 30th.@Zasada, @gruecd, @tri-man 47, @The Iguana, and @SteelCurtain......when are you guys planning on coming in and leaving? I just need to know when the foot rubs are happening. I don't want to miss those!

The basement room is "dog free" in that they are never down there. It's two twins there so you and @gruecd can have that room. And honestly, they don't go in any of the other rooms either so you should be fine either way. Grue hasn't had an issue as far as I know when he's been here and even my wife has an allergy to them but doesn't have any problems.@gianmarco - there is an outside chance I’ll arrange some work travel around this trip but it’s unlikely.
if not, hope to arrive mid day Friday and leave Sunday AM.
i have a slight allergy to dogs. No big deal but if there is a no dog room, I’d prefer that spot. If not, I’ll survive.
If all you wankers don’t pose for a picture with gian sitting in his acorn chair with the rest of you surrounding him, I will drive down there and personally kick you all in the nuts.@Zasada, @gruecd, @tri-man 47, @The Iguana, and @SteelCurtain......when are you guys planning on coming in and leaving? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.This was shaping up to be the perfect storm for a great race. Fitness is at an all-time high. Garmin says I’m peaking! Weather is better than ideal. Sleeping in my own bed. But..... all week I’ve been avoiding the sickness around me. Half my family has the flu/some sort of virus. About 6 of my students have it as well. 3 or 4 teachers I work closely with have it too! I’ve been carrying a gallon of hand sanitizer everywhere I go. I’ve never been this aware of trying to avoid getting sick because my immune system is awful. I always get sick.
Welp, I lasted up until yesterday. Around 9:00 am my throat was swollen and on fire. The came a stuffed up nose/face and headache. Got home from work yesterday and slept until 6:30 this morning. went for a run this morning. Although the stats were good, I was extremely lethargic and dead at the end of my 3 miler. I’m on my way to get my bib just in case I feel good in the am. As of now, I don’t think I can attempt to complete 26.2 tomorrow.
If you feel even modestly better tomorrow I hope you give it a shot. I’m no doctor but sometimes I feel better when I’m out there and get the blood pumping and the lungs going. This was shaping up to be the perfect storm for a great race. Agreed, if you're sick then there is no upside to trying to race. If you feel well enough to long run at less effort you will benefit more in preparation for your next attempt. Use it as a springboard to string a few weeks of quality volume together and you'll be in a better spot than you are now.Feel better Share. @JShare87
Don’t you have a 2nd race upcoming too and you were trying to get ready for this one on a shortened cycle only if things lined up great? Setting sights on that and tailoring whatever weeks you have till race isn’t the worst thing to do with your fitness.
Has biking ever aggravated the injury?Hope you are feeling better @JShare87
I went to my ortho yesterday for 4 month update. Usually I would get my next prednisone injection, but last one only lasted for about a month and once it wore off, it left things in bad shape. I opted not to get an injection. As we had discussed at past visits, next course of therapy isn't a good one. It would likely be surgery where they would either clear out the joint, or fuse the joint. Neither is a slam dunk fix. My doc's recollection was that surgery isn't good for this injury, but he is going to review the literature and then come up with next recommended steps if any in the next couple of weeks.
In 2014, i tried to get back to running and see if I could find a fix for what had been a decades old injury. I certainly tried a lot of potential fixes, but I think I've come up empty. But at least I now know what the injury is and can manage my life around that, which is good I guess.
Seems like the future will at least still have some running, but at more limited mileage, probably 12 to 15 miles a week. I'm trying to step up my biking and elliptical over the next year and see if that sticks. So far in January, it's working good to alternate running days with gym days. At the gym, I'm doing elliptical and walking on treadmill while watching Netflix. Historically, it's been tough for me to keep this going motivation wise; whereas running has never been a motivation issue. I'm eyeballing Peloton, but that's a big $ nut.
Yes, but the magnitude is way way less. I'd have to bike for several hours for it to register any pain.Has biking ever aggravated the injury?
HM PR forThis time last year I was trying too prepare for and convince myself I could run a sub 1:45 HM. Today I ran what was really a pretty easy HM with just me and the dog in under 1:53. My HR was basically in the 130s and low 140s most of the time. I am really looking forward to this year and seeing what I can do.
