Ran a 10k - Official Thread (12 Viewers)

My HR has been crazy erratic over the last few weeks.  I'm willing to give some consideration to this condensation-cadence-HR-averaging hypothesis.  I also have a half dozen other possible explanations.

Not yet.  Last update was a week ago.  I'll keep everyone informed.

Luckily we haven't been hit hard here.  Yet.  I think the next few weeks will determine a lot.
Being adjacent to the epicenter and feeling so close to it (3 out of 35 people on my team have tested positive), life here has shut down pretty hard.  I only hope your area doesn't get what we have.

Keep us posted.

Also, my work is such that May is usually a slower time which is why the relay worked with my calendar.  That seems to be rapidly changing so if the relay happens, I hope I'm able to get there for it!

Being in the same industry, albeit in a different line of work - this is playing a similarly major role in my indecisiveness about what to do whenever racing resumes. I am confident the lull I am accustomed to starting in October will happen, but between now and then?

I expect substantially more work than usual but what - and when? Your guess is as good as mine.

:boxing:

Got notified yesterday that my Strava CR (½ mile on the nearest main road with a path) I had set a few years ago got taken by 1 second.

So I took it back today 👑 (as my 8th interval)

Interesting run today.  Wanted to do some 400s to get ready for the challenge and also verify that my foot could handle some fast running.  It's weird in that my foot bounced around between a 0 and maybe a 3 on the pain scale with all of the 3s coming during slow running.  Maybe something with my gait?  At any rate, things went well all things considered, but I'm going to try to be smart about between now and the 5K trial.

I was worried about pacing the intervals because it was quite windy here today (20 with 30 gusts), so I found a slight incline that matched up pretty well with the wind.  Apparently 21ft of elevation gain over 1/4 mile with a strong tailwind roughly equals 21 ft of elevation loss over 1/4 mile with a strong headwind.  Who knew?

In other exciting news, apparently one the local colleges allows the public on their track in lanes 3-8.  All of the high schools around me have theirs fenced off.  I may be able to make use of this previously unknown availability for Team Juxt...

Can someone post the dates again of the 5K, 10K, 1 mile challenge? Tried to search but gave up after 5 seconds.

# of teams: Keep it to two?  With 20+ guys, those are big teams.  Maybe that's OK.  Ultimately, this is about giving everyone motivation to run and train during these weird times.

Team captains: I still like the idea of @gruecd and @Juxtatarot.  They're evenly matched; they know the background of a lot of the guys here; they're both thoughtful/analytical.  Once our list of runners is set, we can decide how to provide a fair bio of where we're at and what we're capable of.

Races: With thoughts for multiple races, what if we did a three-race sequence, four weeks apart.  We can pace-adjust for runners who are a bit off on the distances.

- 5K around April 16-19

- 10K around May 14-17

- 1 mile around June 11-14

If the teams split the first two events, the June hard miles would be the deciding factor, and that's probably the most unpredictable (knowing who has strong top-end speed).  Starting with a 5K is easier for those who haven't gotten in a lot of training yet.

If local races do start happening again, we can always let this slide.  But I suspect this social isolation will last into the summer.  And really, events need to know that things are opening up again before they can definitively plan, so it'll be a while.
@ChiefD

Can I suggest we either move the 10K to the weekend of 30May or make that weekend also eligible?  That way I have a dual-incentive to run hard at the relay.  To do well for the team as well to #BeatGrue!  Also then I'm not beating myself up for two fast 10Ks two weeks apart.

'No.'

@tri-man 47, probably (hat tip @ChiefD)

Let's wait and see how things play out with the virus restrictions.  They impressively switch-a-rood the entire race format last year in just a few days, so they might wait until early May to see where things stand.  With other events/races scheduled for June and beyond already being cancelled, it'd be surprising if a May event occurred, but who can predict.  So we shall wait and see.

That's what I just did. Started to feel it after one mile, though very mild. Got to 2 miles and it was starting to get worse. Called it quits.

That's after 7 full days of no running at all.
Crap, just saw that. I don't know what to say, that sucks. You did the right thing to shut it down.

Have you been doing a lot of stretching, self-massage, and exercises while you've been resting?
Hamstrings are as loose as ever. No sore spots in my calves or quads. I haven't been doing any other specific stretches other than daily hamstrings in the shower.

Overall, everything else feels as good as I can remember. Even now, I can't even find where it hurts. This is so frustrating.

Good luck finding the root of the problem.  It's always frustrating, and I'd imagine especially for you (from the little I've gleaned of your personality) to not be able to have a checklist of "do these X things and then it will get better".  Remember, though,  you've done a lot of work this year - it'll take a lot more than a week or two of not running to lose those gains.

You’ve prob watched all YouTubes but I think I mentioned one I get lots of relief from - knee smash shown here and also the last move he does against the wall which is similar to his ‘couch stretch’ that is another great one

Just talked to him. He believes it's tendinitis like I thought. He recommended

1) Shutting it down longer. 2-3 weeks more then slowly get back out there.

2) Hip strengthening exercises. @bushdocda clam shells and other Jane Fonda exercises.

Lovely. With everything going on, supposed to have already started training, best weather of the year, I can sit inside and watch everyone else run. And worst part that I otherwise feel great and can't even tell if it's better. Welp, see you guys in May, I suppose.

I know the feeling.

Walking Lunges

Box jumps

Russians

Leg lifts (with scissors and twists)

The side band walks our resident gyno mentioned

Find a steep incline and power walk that sumbich

And it's best doing that stuff outside anyway.

This will all be new as I've never done any leg strengthening exercises with the exception of PT following my ACL repair a few years ago.

But I'll give it a go.

besides, it's several weeks later. You can run hard mid May and be recovered for the end of the month too!

:D

Not yet, but that may be next. Going to reach out to an Ortho friend and see what he thinks.

What a bust of a draft pick.
It was pretty amazing what a little PT did for me. Both the hammy and the hip. I was seriously having issues sleeping and such and just a few sessions had me back to normal like nothing had ever happened. Pretty cool voodoo magic he worked, IMO.

Stay at home order goes into effect tonight.

Thankfully "outdoor activities" are considered essential. So there's not much change to our life except the stores are limiting the number of people allowed inside - so people can now line up outside like black Friday.

Race was supposed to be today, and it’s COLD. 30 degrees with a 10 mph north wind. Almost perfect. Would have been a great tailwind the back half of the race.

My plan today is to do 13.1 miles. It won’t be fast. There may be walking involved. It may include skipping or sashaying. But that’s the plan.

I’ve lost all motivation to run right now. With all that is happening around us, my head and heart is really heavy. Trying to be positive in front of the kids, but this whole thing is getting worrisome.

Have a good day gentlemen.

Stay positive, GB. We’re going to get through this, and we’ll all be better for it on the other side. You’re young, healthy, got a great family, and you’re a pretty cool dude. More than most people can say. Keep that head up!
