People suck.

Went out for my run today on a local bike path.  It's about 10 feet across, so as long as people move over and go single file when passing other people, there's more than enough room to comply with the 6-foot "social distancing" recommendation.  Do you think any of the couples out walking together could be bothered to get into single file?  Of course not.  They continued to walk side-by-side taking up their entire side of the path, necessitating me going off the path into the grass whenever I'd pass someone in order to give proper distance.  What's especially bothersome is that most of these knuckle-draggers were fat and/or old, which means they're the ones who'd be at much higher risk of complications if they'd catch the virus. ####### idiots.

I’m kinda intrigued by these “last man standing” events. This one is new this year and relatively close to me. I feel like I could run 4.2mph for a long time...

So this morning I got an introduction to Mike Wardian via a mutual friend.  I'm emailing him as we speak to pick his brain about this type of race...

Even with the wind issue, I find that the track tends to be 10-15 sec/mile faster due to the springier surface and no short-stepping caused be turns/curbs/etc.  For track miles, I start on the outside lane and work in.  That eliminates the counting and builds a bit of extra mileage that cuts down the last lap ( @JAA, I think you were cautious about doing the 10K on the track, but breaking it into these  8-loop sequences makes the time go by rather painlessly, although I probably just made @SFBayDuck throw up a little in his mouth).

You bring up a good point about the surface.  I will probably scout out the college track to see if it would be fast.  There is actually a high school track that would be closer that is not fenced off but looking at the satellite view it appears to be gravel  The local half marathon ends on the city high school track, and that thing is some sort of rubber that makes it feel like you are running on a trampoline - I would totally use that one if I could.

I’m guessing @SFBayDuck and @SayWhat? would be great resources.  It’s not much different than an ultra. 
 

I’m thinking nutrition and taking care of your feet are critical.  Good thing is you can change your shoes and socks frequently. Easy access to food and location too.

Wardian was doing his 4.2 miles in about 11-12 min miles so he was done in 48ish minutes. 12 min rest and then back out there.

i vote the strava needs to say 3.1.

If it's a track, I think the exception can be made because it's a known distance and you need to complete the prescribed number of laps. Anything else and Strava needs to say 3.1 miles.

I trust the measured track a lot more than GPS accuracy. If someone runs 12.5 laps on a track that should be allowed for the 5k. For the mile people should start at the mile starting line so they run a mile and not just 1600 meters.

My experience and what I’ve read from others about tracks is GPS measures short. Mine would probably be more than 3.3.

It’s like 20-25 min SSW of Madison. I have a friend who did that one on the SHT. She said it’s beautiful but hard. Over 750 feet of gain in each loop!

Can we amend to say Strava or other device screenshot? I usually stop my Garmin spot on for the distance but Strava can be slightly plus or minus sometimes.

Scoring

Scores are determined by summing the top four or five individual finishing places on each team. In international competition, a team typically consists of six runners, with the top four scoring. In the United States, the most common scoring system is seven runners, with the top five scoring. Points are awarded to the individual runners of eligible teams, equal to the position in which they cross the finish line (first place gets 1 point, second place gets 2 points, etc.). The points for these runners are summed, and the lowest score wins. Individual athletes, and athletes from incomplete teams (teams consisting of less than 5 athletes or teams) and individuals who have been disqualified are excluded from scoring. Ties are usually broken by the position of each team's sixth runner.

The lowest possible score in a five-to-score match is 15 (1+2+3+4+5), achieved by a team's runners finishing in each of the top five positions. If there is a single opposing team then they would have a score of 40 (6+7+8+9+10), which can be considered a "sweep" for the winning team. In some competitions a team's sixth and seventh runner are scored in the overall field and are known as "pushers" or "displacers" as their place can count ahead of other runners, giving other teams more points. In the above match, if there are two non-scoring runners and they came 6th and 7th overall, the opponent's score would be 50 (8+9+10+11+12). The problem with the cross country style scoring is that a lot of the injured runners are fairly high to mid round picks and that would be an advantage to the healthier team. Also this would create a situation where the slowest runners on the healthier team time wouldn’t count and I don’t think we want that. 

I think the teams are evenly matched, with team Juxt being the favorite, especially in the top 2 spots. If team Grue wins this it will be because of the late round picks making up the difference.

Despite what I've got going on, I'm planning on running the 5K.  Unfortunately, my fitness is going to be ####.  I'll make up for it with a sweet downhill I found. 

Probably a dumb idea but I'm so tired of not running that it's getting to the point I don't care.

In passing, yes.  Then she said she didn't want to do it.  Then I was hurt and said she needed to run since I couldn't and she didn't say "no".  Then she went all @ChiefD on me a couple days ago and said "No".

I suspect this would be an advantage in the mile, disadvantage in the 10K, but am not sure on 5K. They're doing exercise time over there right now (thankfully!!!) and some of them move pretty well over short periods of time.

I suspect this would be an advantage in the mile, disadvantage in the 10K, but am not sure on 5K. They're doing exercise time over there right now (thankfully!!!) and some of them move pretty well over short periods of time.

For years I've been waiting for a chance for all this training to have some practical purpose.  Maybe it could be for good like running down a mugger who just stole an old woman's purse.  But, I've also thought many times about running from a cop who wants to arrest me for jayrunning.

Averages is the way to go. Makes the mile as important as 10k
